Afghan Refugees: How Military And Veterans Are Helping In UK

now that the final flight is left we’re looking at ways to support those people who did make it out and what we’re doing is coordinating with local authorities um getting people to send stuff from the list that they uh they provide which tells us what the refugees actually need right now send that to the address at the royal military academy sandhurst and then the local authorities go into the academy collect what they need and then take it to the refugee hotels where they distribute it to those who need it who’s involved with this because you’re retired from the army but the the the material is being gathered at sandhurst yeah i’ve retired from the army but i’m still working for them so i’m a civilian instructor on the academic side at sanders now and i spoke to the staff quartermaster and he was he was kind enough to allow us to use his department to collate and store all the all the goods that are coming in and the other part of the wii is is those people who in the local authorities of heathrow and gatwick who are working so hard to actually get this stuff to happen so really i’m just a linkman but i’ve been able to link up these two various organizations and hopefully make something good happen what has happened to the the people who’ve been flown in from afghanistan as refugees where are they now so i’ll take it back slightly if you think about the condition they were in when they left kabul most of them had been queueing for 48 72 hours in the sun some of them having to go through the sewage drains that you saw footage on the uh on news and then they’ve had to go through our flights maybe to doha maybe to bahrain and then they’ve had to take another flight to land in the uk at which point they’ve been moved to a quarantine hotel where they’re there for 10 days after that would you know the local authorities are trying to find them local housing but we’ve got a shortage of that in the uk so these people are facing a quite long stay potentially in some of the quarantine hotels that they’re putting why is it important for for you and other veterans to to do this to support these afghan refugees i think we feel a sense of responsibility you know i don’t think anyone could say that the afghan campaign ended in an uproarious success and i don’t think we should let the brilliant achievements of our troops the last couple of weeks detract from the fact that this is still a defeat and a failure and i think people feel that quite strongly and this is a way to make a difference you know we we made promises to the afghan people that we haven’t kept as a country ultimately um you know we promised we’d get rid of the taliban we promised women’s education you know we promised a degree of freedom and all that is now gone because the taliban are back in charge so if we can help those people who escaped then at least that goes some way to be paying a little bit of our debt to these people you
