Aston Villa Vs Brentford | Dean Smith | Pre Match

today i just want to start on the injury situation um is he in contention for the game so ollie watkins uh done some work outside yesterday he’s going to train with us today and if he gets through training okay then he’ll be available for selection i bet he’ll be uh jumping at the bits again yeah he certainly will obviously it’s a club where he spent a lot of a lot of time a very successful period for him in terms of goal scoring and um you know helped develop him into the player he is today yeah his progress is going okay but tomorrow will come too quick for him um the same with bertrand triore as well i expect both of them to be fit for you know the first game after the international break and how’s samsung getting on yes samsung’s training fully with us now um he’s had no match exposure at the moment so he’s likely to play a couple of games in the next week or two how’s keenan’s progress going keenan’s um coming out of a brace tomorrow um and we’re hopeful then he’ll be probably three or four weeks away from training everybody else okay yeah everybody else is good okay uh just start on transfer news as well uh wesley we understand he’s uh close to leaving to join club rouge on a loan deal what can you tell us about that i can tell you that he’s having a medical with someone um to with the with the opportunity for him to go out on loan um i think i’ve made it public knowledge that we think a lot of wesley he had a very significant injury and you know he’s come back and unfortunately he’s come back in the middle of a pandemic where we couldn’t arrange games so he’s lacking match minutes um you know and you know in his absence we’ve obviously brought in ollie watkins who’s done fantastically well we’ve brought in danny ings now as well so i feel it’s in you know wesley’s best interest to go and get match minutes and then come back a better player and the player that we signed from bruce so he he still has a future aston villa yeah he definitely has a future i mean he’s uh he’s he’s going on loan that is the only thing he’s doing uh and uh what about uh covering that position then i know you mentioned coming back there do you feel like you’ve got enough cover up front well as i said before we’ve got danny ing’s got ollie watkins we’ve got a keenan davis who will come back from injury um you know we’ve got some bright young youngsters as well um uh cameron archer scored a hat-trick in the week i’ve got uh leon bailey coming back from injury who can play up there troy who can play up there as well so i think we’ve got more than enough cover there and just speaking of the youngsters i guess the phone hasn’t stopped ringing for cameron archer and a few of the others from yeah no he hasn’t he uh he obviously had an opportunity he trained me but in pre-season that was an opportunity for him to show the coaching staff and his fellow players around him that what he was about and he’d done really well in training and so you know wasn’t afraid to to throwing him in and he done himself the world of good a really good hat trick and a really good performance and and yes we’ve had a lot of people asking the question about him what sort of i mean first of all would you allow him to go out online and what sort of level do you think he’s at the moment um i’m not sure whether he’s going to go out on loan uh we might keep him around us and see if we can help developing training with the first team on a regular basis and then look at it in january again um but you know i think we have to remember he was playing against a league two team and that’s no disrespect to barrow um but he’s certainly putting a good performance this is obviously our that’s uh news conference until the end of the transfer window so i’m going to try my luck with a name for you there’s been a lot of noise in that in italy about villa’s potential interest in western mckenney can you confirm that at all i can’t confirm that i don’t mention any names but i said pretty much last week that i felt we were pretty much done in the transfer market um we’ve got a lot of we’ve brought some quality players in to add to the squad um and we’ve i believe we’ve got some of the most talented youngsters in the premier league at the moment uh within our squad as well so i don’t feel that we need to go and stretch out anywhere else so you’re not going to give us any excitement i’m certainly not no um i just want to ask you as well about the the issue around uh redlist countries and the international break obviously the premier league decided this week that players wouldn’t be able to travel if they were going to countries on the red list that would obviously affect tony martinez but have you spoken to those players what’s been their reaction to that yeah i have spoken to them marvelous nakamba comes into that category as well um yeah there’s an argument from both sides you know these players are very proud to represent their countries we as a football club are very proud to to support them playing for their countries as well and proud of them when they go and play international football um but this pandemic has put us in into a situation where if these players were to go and play they would have to come back and sit in a government hotel for 10 days and d train and miss a number of first-team games so i i can understand uh why the premier league has made the decision it has and i’m sure other leagues will probably follow that um i think it’s very difficult situation all round because you know the world cup qualifiers have got to be played sometime um you know but um at the moment such as the pandemic and our government restrictions that that movements across borders uh just doesn’t work at the moment i know fifa urged governments to change their stance i can’t fund that would you agree with that and perhaps urge the government to change the rules or relax them slightly it’s a very difficult one i don’t think you can just make exceptions for football players and that’s the difficulty that the government have um you know so it’s far above my pay grade um but i certainly understand the the complex situation and brentford for you as well it’s it’s obviously an important game uh given your history with them as well how do you see the game and how do you see their progress as a club their progress has been there for all to see over the the last seven or eight years um under the ownership of matthew benham it’s been nothing but remarkable um you know the the signings that they make the transfer money that they’ve made uh but the progression is a club and you know now to become a premier league club with a fantastic new stadium um you know a lot of credit goes to to obviously the owner matthew bennett but there’s a lot of people who work there behind the scenes who work very hard to to get where they are and um you know i was i was certainly cheering them on to get into the premier league and and looking forward to it and uh you know looking forward to picking my wits against my old assistant thomas frank um you know and a couple of a couple of players who i know fondly and sergey kanos and and uh rico henry as well i mean thomas is quite can be quite aggressive on the touchline he likes to whip the crowd up fantasy going head-to-head with him on the touchline now he he knows what my character’s like i know what his character is like and uh you know i’m quite relaxed he’ll do well to whip up the crowd behind him at villa park dean david mentioned it’s going to be an emotional one this isn’t it with your history with brentford and you mentioned it before you know their progression under yourself and now thomas and and to have them in the premier league is nothing short of remarkable for the work that matthew stone and you did and now thomas is doing at that club um yeah be emotional because it’s a fantastic club and i really enjoyed my three years three years there i think it was just under three years um you know the people who i work with there who are still there um you know the players and and just the uh the structure you know above the head coach it’s just a fantastic club with really good people so um really really excited to see them all again but uh you know we have to go and you know do the business and make sure we perform and uh get a win because they’ve started really well and look really hard to beat how pleased are you with the week just got obviously the the win in the the cup in midweek and i was there for the the uh the win against newcastle and having crowds back in at villa park it was just sensational wasn’t it yeah the atmosphere was terrific and um you know i thought it was an okay performance um you know but a moment of brilliance from danny ings you know lifted the whole place and uh took us on to get the victory and um i think we deserved it in the end but it was only an okay performance the players know that and they know that we’ve got to perform a lot better you know and keep progressing as a club and in terms of you know should you get the win at the weekend having had the start you had at watford would you be happy with with two out of three going into the international break we’ve got to go and win a game first so it’s a tough one to answer we have to go and win a game first and it’s uh it has a say against a team that are very tough to beat i wanted to mention one more player actually and i know you might want to single out individuals but um anwar el gazi uh against newcastle i thought was was really good he’s got this knack of scoring penalties he scored another one again a quite an incredible penalty against barrow just tell us how much he’s sort of progressing and how much he is you know how important he is to to your team because he’s been marvelous the last couple of games hasn’t he yeah i mean you only have to look at his stats from last season he scored 10 goals in the premier league last season which can get you know um overlooked at times as a wide player it’s a good return you know uh from a wide player who didn’t start every game um you know this season he started really well got his goal against got his penalty against newcastle and then you know came off at four nil with two goals and two assists to his name so uh it just shows you the kind of form he’s in and in terms of um you know you’ve mentioned sort of your transfer business is done is that a good thing in a way that you’ve managed to get all that business done early and there’s no sort of late scramble and you’ve got the sort of squad in there and they’re sort of integrating within within the club and within within the team structure is that a helpful thing not having to do the last minute scrambling in terms of deals yeah i think it’s really helpful um you know we’ve got a strategy at the football club where you know our plans uh are done quite early um as you say you don’t want to be scrambling around towards the end of the window we feel we’ve got a good squad um i just wish it was a little bit healthier at the moment but you know that’s the way it is sometimes and we’ve got a few injuries um but all clubs have to deal with that with the summer we’ve had with you know the different competitions of the euros the copper the olympics the the gold cup um it has affected you know many clubs pre-seasons the best of luck for the weekend and uh have a good international break if you can cheers thank you hi delaney okay yeah i’m good thanks how are you mate yeah i’m very well very well thank you i just wanted to quickly throw back to the other night because you you and the players involved got the most out of that experience that you possibly could have done didn’t they at barrow yeah we certainly did and you know uh people can say it’s only league two barrow but these are tough trips for for for any club uh potential banana skins you’ve got nothing to win but only only things to lose really um you know but our players made the the best of that opportunity that was afforded them uh none more so than cameron archer with uh you know fantastic hat trick um the likes of aj getting his first uh appearance for aston villa um hayden lingley the same so um you know great opportunity but a great attitude and application from the senior pros who played as well and regarding tomorrow you mentioned a little while ago that you brought thomas frank to brentford when you were there what did you identify in him back then that you thought you know would be good for brentford at that point and now you’ve seen him progress to to be alongside you as a premier league manager um well first of all his tactical knowledge um his coaching ability um but on top of that his personality and his character uh lots of loads of enthusiasm loves the game um you know and it’s no surprise to me he’s done as well as he has and you really enjoyed your time there i know you did but you’ve chosen to to progress each time i mean you know over 10 years you’ve been a manager more than 10 years you’ve chosen to to move on each time and that very rarely happens in your your business these days yeah it’s certainly certainly doesn’t so you know i was fortunate to to get off of the chance to go to brentford from warsaw where i really enjoyed my time and and obviously then from brentford to aston villa um you know and sat here now third season as a premier league manager and you know hopefully uh seeing the progression of this great football club again okay that’s great dude thank you mate thanks rob cheers hi dean hi mate you okay yeah absolutely average right can you tell me about um brentford you’ve had them watched are they playing differently in the premier league to how they did in the championship oh they’ve probably adjusted a little bit but no not not really you have to make slight adjustments because of the quality of the league that you’re coming into um they were defensively solid last year in in their championship um they looked defensively solid again very organized what i would expect from a team from from thomas um and they’ve got a threat uh you know they pose a threat ivan tony and buemo um you know and one of the big things they’re they’re very strong gone they’re a big team so set pieces um is certainly a strength for theirs and something that we saw against arsenal that you know we have to be good at defensively they look defensively resilient as well yeah they are they’ve got players who you know are enjoying the chance and the opportunity to go and play in the premier league and you know uh will certainly not leave anything uh behind they’ll give it everything they’ve got on the pitch just tell us a little bit about thomas again if you would um you employed him and now he’s he’s alongside you tell us just a little bit about his strengths and were you surprised that he’s come on no not surprised at all um you know he had a tough start when he first took over the the role i think they lost seven out of the first nine um but he always had a belief in what he was doing um i spoke i’ve spoken to him a couple of times and it’s been no surprise to me he’s he’s a football man he understands the game really a really good coach um but he’s got a really really exuberant enthusiasm around the the training ground and um you know i saw that firsthand when he was working with me and you know uh i can see it through his players now your pre-season games would cancel two of them you have to if you like come a little bit late are you convinced you’re going to improve week by week so we’ll see more from you and how pleased were you that in your words you weren’t at your best last week but still won yeah i believe we will progress um you know we’ve we’ve got some very good players on the sidelines at the moment who um we’re hoping we’ll be back pretty soon and and when they are you know we’ve got a good a very good squad to choose from um at this moment in time like a lot of clubs there you know there’s a there’s a few missing but we will progress from week to week i have no doubts about that uh i think the lads got a rude awakening after 45 minutes at watford and i think we’ve you know improved since then but not being anywhere near our best uh or anywhere near where i want us to be it does argue well though if you can win when you’re not at your best yeah it does and you know uh could have been a different game callum wilson missed a big chance after five minutes um and goals can change games and i think danny danny yings’s wonderful goal showed that last week and i thought from that moment he scored there was only going to be one winner but the game was in the balance before that um but we have got that quality you know we’ve with the likes of danny ings who can score goals like that you
