AZ Alkmaar v Celtic LIVE Pre-Match Preview // The ACSOM Bulletin // A Celtic State of Mind

welcome back to celtic state of mind i’m paul john dyches and tonight i’m delighted to be joined not only by russell boise boyce but also by brian dayton welcome to the show guys are you up for this tonight how refreshing is that russell boyce after last season i spoke earlier on today about your first visit to this to the station the station and what it meant was the studio he came into the studio and that was following our first derby game of last season um a lot of people were beginning to get very concerned about celtic at that stage and for many many games following that particular match boy say it was a painful experience it was difficult to come on at full time and give half an hour and try and find some kind of positives tonight we’ve come in here the mood is completely different russell oh absolutely no two ways about it i mean last year i think i did like well let’s say for example i did 20 mondays i think i came in the back of like four ones it was unbelievable how many times i was coming in the monday i was like i’ve completely jinxed this up there’s no way he’s going to keep me on i’m actually ruining everything right now but i i mean that the vibrating room is just it’s just amazing man to think that we’re going a outmaneuver i’ve got no two no no two doubts about it you know if this had been last season we need to go scalped you know i mean there’s no two ways about it so we’re going into the gamertuner lead already which is a positive result typically away goals are there and uh but that doesn’t matter i still actually think we’ll go over there and score the night um if i’m being honest i think it could be i think it could be a couple of every moment i think they’re a good side and i actually have to think they were unlucky not to have schooled in the first side but they didn’t and we did take a couple of chances which is good i still thank you when you look how many shots were creating the new poll uh you know week on week now it’s becoming ridiculous the numbers actually didn’t compute now do you know what i mean it is like it’s like playing football manager or championship manager and like having all the best players and you’re getting those sort of numbers 36 shots and go i still think we can transfer a bit of that form in here away in europe i’m quite confident we’ll do that i think the first half will go for them and i’m confident we’ll get a goal i’m not saying we’ll necessarily win the win the match but i think we’ll go through in the time well i like this positivity um because as you say we after the the games we came out during the week leading up to the following game russell all season and some people are saying oh it’s a bit negative oh your show’s a bit negative well brian it was very difficult actually to extract anything like what we’re now feeling um so it’s the return of the rip roaring you know the rest celtic this evening and it was interesting earlier on in the building we spoke about angie’s approach to this game he’s going to have a cavalier approach he’s not going to defend and i think people are looking at that for us to get the quick goal settle the nerves put us three nothing up um in the tie uh and then get right into them well is that the only way that ange poster call glues teams knows how to play brian i don’t think it’s the only way to know how to play i think it’s the only way he prefers to play so i think he’s just his philosophy is you know attacks the best form of defense the other day i was on and i said the famous jock scheme quote but the best place to defend is your opponent’s penalty box and i love the fact that ange is getting that’s an attitude but and this is this is that seems to be a kind of conscious debate but that’s he’s no although that’s his system that’s his philosophy he’s no naive enough to not change it during a game if things aren’t working you saw what towards the end of the first leg of the altmo game when we were tired in a bit kyogre went off he stopped you know what he got nicely satin but he stopped trying to you know played two fantasies you know he adapted about during the game just his tactics and i think when you make that tactical switch he’s not sacrificing any philosophies he’s just game managing and you saw that squad management which subs and so i think i don’t think i would say that’s the only way you know city play i think he’s an incredibly clever tactician i just think that’s where he wants to play and i think you know what look if we start off from latino down 25 minutes into the game you change it up he’s no stupid but i just can’t see that happening i think we’ve taken a stranglehold on games but we’re forcing the other team that they know they have to defend and i tell you one of the other things apart from the fact of been so positive on the the axon pod for this most of our season i would say every single time we get the ball i feel like we’re going to score we look so dangerous it’s electric everything’s in tunnel on its own i think we’re going to score he’s going to put it in for a goal and i’ve not felt like that watching celtic for a long time you’re talking about turnbull on the tongue it’s a sight to behold we’re going to run through the team in a second or two but here’s some comments coming through thanks for tuning in you’re watching on twitch periscope on twitter youtube linkedin facebook on numerous pages yes we are going out live on a number of different broadcasts pete mcgregor hail hill fellow supporters from canada yes um a massive everybody that’s watching us but um if you’re watching from canada australia ireland japan and various other places we were number one in vietnam last year russell so we’ve got a fan base in vietnam i’m not sure if it’s uh friends of yourself who live out there or if it’s expats who knows but the and effect is in full flow we can see it in the stats on these shows boys say he’s been talking about dipping back into the the japanese market in january uh but let’s just for a moment uh have a look at the one man who we do have on our books that’s already come in from the j-league he’s starting tonight he’s starting in what i would call my preferred center forward roll with christie out left are you happy with that yeah i think he’s far more effective there i mean i know he’s not actually played badly when he’s been out wide but you only need to look at the number it goes the number opportunities in fact more importantly that kyogre is either on the end of or involved and is quite frightening when he plays through the middle i just think he’s he’s definitely he can be the focal point of the site when he plays there he’s someone that you know is offering runs in completely different ways manners it means that you know the runs that you think solve are completely outside the box sometimes and at times the ball won’t go to him but he’ll take defenders with him he’s creating chaos in the opposition boxer you know even we’ve got the ball in our own half is movement of the ball and that’s why i can’t wait to get silted part just to kingdom i think laura was doing clear camera tunnel i would like to do that with you guys you know what i mean kinda just i remember it was an old fun game that i was at and it was the pull deals from them before anyone gets their knickers and i trust themselves i almost heard the clocks and the clacks and almost went off there awesome as well you can all ram it honestly but i think with regards to like that game that i watched robbie keem was up front and he was outstanding off the ball that was the thing that got me the most performance he was dragging them all all place and i think kyogre or kyogre can uh certainly do that for us tonight i think up front i was definitely the position i would rather he had played for us and i think the thing is with edward as much as he’s been sacrificed is still for the benefit of the team as much as edward you would say is definitely in the best 11 players celtic having the squad is he part of the best starting level and at this moment in time unfortunately for eddie he’s not and that’s not paid for attitude that’s based on just right now the guy informs kyogre he’s not going to get the jezreel from anything soon on current form no i would agree with that and i’ve been saying in relation to uh kyogle brian i don’t think anyone would disagree it just seems so so much more effective through the middle not to say that he’s ineffective on the left but he’s dynamite when he’s playing through the center ryan christie incidentally will make his 150th appearance for celtic tonight so um great to have ryan christie back in the the starting lineup on the left-hand side with cugo going through the middle but going back to a point russell made earlier there brian great player to have on the bench in eddie well absolutely and then i think and colin and i were having unusual disagreements about who would start the world day and then was calling looking for leo connor right back again i think he was looking for leo connor um but uh sorry colin you know what i love you mate um but i think what eddie gives you off the bench is a different dynamic you imagine being a defender i haven’t remark and then eddie comes on and offers that different dynamic just to pick up something i also said so i was lucky enough to go with the first leg at parkhead the very first time i was in glasgow and you’re right you see the movement here yoga wow and it’s really special and i’ll tell you the other thing i noticed altman are a big sight they’re big physical boys they’re athletic they’re strong and they’re laying into him and the main one was taking it he was taking his dumps he was standing there wasn’t he rolling about he was getting it he’s uh he’s he’s got about him okay well you know he’s quiet he’s nice and he goes about his business but he won’t be bullied and i think you see that thing i think that’s like almost ideal and for him is the outboard because he’s pacing his movement as you see here soon you said he’s only eating yellow box and paying a diagonal over and he’s on it so you know we can change up our play so much during that we can play through the middle roger can hold up and tongue so yeah and then to maybe bring a guy like eddie off the bench i think he’s absolutely great position no it definitely is now um dipping back into the comment section sorry russell yeah carl mcgregor’s 150th appearance it must be right ryan christmas oh i think she called me greg i’ve been sitting there in my head you know i’m mad at numbers i’m like doesn’t it i don’t does that right christie that’s right callum mcgregor will make his 335th appearance for celtic tonight this season yeah you’re in numbers numberology love it and william peden is watching from dubai what happens in dubai station dubai remember william don’t mention dubai um and gary byron is in valencia all the way from brunei is gary mcdeville and we go on it’s brilliant to see the worldwide celtic fans tuning into celtic state of mind uh jenny fraser from texas usa and it goes on so let us know where you’re watching the podcast morning gents from melbourne they need to get updated early to watch this but by the way it’s worth it isn’t it loving the podcast boys will get the job done i think last season christy might have just pressed snooze a few times on that alarm and then just fell back asleep rather than going wherever it has to go to watch the game a different story this season though and you’ve already mentioned someone else from australia and tom logic russell he’s one of these guys that you know he’s come right back out from the dark he’s been resurrected he’s like lazarus this season i think a couple of weeks ago i refer to somebody as lazarus from the flames because i like just to take two different scenes merge them into one and just make up a completely original one but he is he’s like a phoenix from the flames uh an old fantasy football reference he’s been like lazarus he’s looking trim he’s looking great and when he’s got the ball there’s often and i’ve said this a couple of times no one else in the park can do what logic does maybe it’s on ball to a degree that ball retention has got a magnetic foot how big a player will he be for us tonight russell well the things he can do with a football and a pair of slippers is the most powerful thing paul because i don’t generally don’t think he plays in football boots the guy is a joke he definitely has a he has a creative mind on the pitch i think you’ll need to look at his assist the other week where he’s decided to do a sort you know he just sort of knocked it over there over the boy’s head before whippling across anyone i would be proud of if he he’s capable of anything on his day i actually happen to think he might be our best player this season so far i think the difference he’s brought to the team i certainly think he’s got the imagination that works when you’ve got amazing runners like we’ve got you need someone who has the imagination and then the execution to sort of feed these guys right and i think roger is through balls are a joke he puts it on a plate for people left right and center and he’s a footballer on a wavelength that is superior to most so when intelligent runs get made because like i’m saying i mean the front three don’t just make runs for the sake of it that’s just been so refreshing but kyogre everything’s very deliberate even though you know the outsiders eye it might look like oh he might just be a wee bit you know sort of running about you know like a loose cannon but he’s not ill or whatever the saying is but like he’s not at all so then what it might look like he’s doing that but it’s all very deliberate and then you need someone who can pull the strings and an architect to be able to sort of feed the supplied uh line to that and i think tom rogic has been my player this season so far well that’s a big shout brian the one thing i would say is there was a moment last season i think it was against livingston where were the throne and uh we were playing with three number tens and they were all standing within about six shards of each other it was tumble roger and christie and i made the point that night you cannot play with a three guys in the same team and just managed to do it yeah and i think even i remember when sort of roger came back into the team and i came in the first game i think it might be done d game and it was i might be wrong but it was tumblr having mcgregor for the first time and i distinctly remember thinking i don’t know how that’s going to work that doesn’t seem the dynamic doesn’t seem quite there and i’ll tell you what i was delighted to be wrong because while you know the the the way tumble’s gonna be sort of drop back and you know ping those long long balls you just thrive in that position mcgregor’s the workhorse in there you’ve got christy and abadda working their socks off yeah full backs coming in and absolutely tearing up so guys look logic i’ve got that that piece of magic they’ve got that thing to do you like but i tell you what i’ve been most impressed about rogic is it’s the defensive side of his game defense i don’t mean wearing the ball back i don’t mean you know jumping up wearing handles because there’s more than one way to defend the way he defends is taking that ball in while we’re under pressure taking it and taking players clearing out the game retaining it and just picking up asking releasing the team he’s been absolutely exceptional at it and i actually think he’s a really good outboard for us now yeah what he’s got the stature that he can pick him out for a long ball he can hold it up you can he’s possible well often it’s going to his feet and he’s got his skill to pick out and i can’t pass he doesn’t just lump it so i think that’s a part of his game that i’ve been really impressed by now you’re you’re spot on because remember the concerns we had about some players not having the what you would look upon as traditional defensive qualities and i think one of the players that was mentioned uh when we were looking at that was david turnbull but i think similarly with turnbull um brian he does what what logic does he just retains the ball and you can yeah it’s on defensively attack it’s great to watch um and you just know he’s going to dink that ball the tumble dink over the top doesn’t always come off but you know before you know it you’re on the attack and the transition has been completed now jim the tim uh come on the hoops from era yeah absolutely and uh keep them coming we’ve also got uh i love it saying he’s happy that kyogre is through the center um russell you made a bold statement and that rodrick is your player this season do you think hugo will add to his sixth goal tally that he’s already at so far just in general or tonight i mean today today some him through the middle as i said more than likely these are most likely go score on the pitch but the thing is that’s not saying all that much either because i also likely think about it could chip in with a goal brian christie’s goal record that celtics outstanding tom rogic the man for the big occasion the player of the season so far from the whole seven game season uh but i think definitely there’s um an argument for your kill go to get one tonight someone’s gonna score for celtic and i think right now the beauty of it is options that we’ve got up there but don’t buy the gold record google’s got so far you wouldn’t bet against it would you no you’re right and you’re talking about someone will score i wouldn’t bet against another couple of players who haven’t really been mentioned in lila bada i mean his goal scoring record has been impressive as well um people keep saying oh he’s only a 19 year old it’s unbelievable if he came through the ranks and he was performing at this level you’d be thinking we’ve got a wonder kid on our on our hands here and i think it’s been a tremendous sign and he’s been a revelation carl mcgregor well over 300 appearances he likes a european goal he scored 13 european goals already so it wouldn’t surprise me if he added to that tally as well but let’s have a wee chat about the defensive area in the park as well we had a real issue last season chopping and changing the goalie how can you get the defense settled when there’s a different keeper behind you um for three thirds of that season conor hazard scott bain and barcass were all in goals none of them really convinced myself and many of the celtic fans so i’ve gone out there and we’ve plugged that gap we’ve plugged that whole brian by bringing in joe hart now the the amount of experience that he brings is unbelievable when you look at over 550 career games club games he’s played plenty of games in europe over 75 games in europe as well and this is his seventh appearance but he’s given celtic um a solidity at the back and a leadership at the back as well wasn’t he absolutely it’s one of the things that i remember he was first linked with is i’ll be honest i wasn’t overly excited that i wasn’t sure how it was going to work but in his first couple of appearances and interviews his attitude seems spot on in fact he’s doing a pay cut and juicy’s impacting that by four it’s just he’s talking players through games he’s still a minute ago i don’t think we’ve considered a set piece yet which is something about medical when you consider however bad to wear last season and as i say it’s just such a good way of organizing and one of the key things about joe hart and it’s something i was worried about initially because angel likes that sweeper keeper and he likes keeper to take possession and baby but higher up the park almost at the edges 18 but jailbroke all the time i was concerned who would be with that but because of the big plays he’s only taking a five ten year pass but where he’s really good as he knows when he just love it he’s got that experience to go right this is he won’t play but he’s two pairs let’s lava so he’s a really strong character he’s got that experience to make that decision he’s not looking for permission he’s no you know doing it despite himself so he’s fitted on excellently and i think his qualities are really shining through they definitely are some people were a bit apprehensive i remember when the name johar started appearing on her own uh whatsapp chat group russell and it definitely divided opinion he’s come in and he’s done for me a tremendous job you look at the the fact that we’ve spent so much money on barcas you know people still going a bit faster and it’s been a a signing from hell really he’s had a nightmare time of it it has bark ass do you think we’ll be able to offload him uh within the next five days because it’s quite clear not only have we got joe hard but we’ve got enough back up here here’s a guy on fairly big wages he’s cost us a lot of money millions of pounds try and get on my way back to maybe a club in greece although he apparently would prefer a move to italy it’s just just picking so there you go all right um just quickly on joe as well don’t know if you’ve seen callum mcgregor’s interview it was i think it was on today it was on sky sports it wasn’t sky sports news today and he was basically talking about joe heart’s impact and what he was saying was joe hartson that jimmy goes all out hours you know like out of training hours you’ll still see him find him in the gym and not only that elbow him who’s tightening up the dressing room and all that behind all the players i like stuff like that i thought wow so it’s not just he was like it’s not just what he’s bringing on the pitch he goes but that attitude he goes is infectious or wants to that effect i’m paraphrasing now as usual but he said son like you know that’s really seeping through the dressing room that sort of attitude and i think that’s brilliant because he is a senior senior player and what is a pretty young pretty young star 11 now you know the age is a young team and i think when you’ve got the average age of the team’s young so i think you’ve got some of the heart who’s you know obviously i think 33 34 now are you you’re looking for him to kind of be that example especially with the vacuum that’s left with something like scott brown who was a real senior pro who definitely was showing the way for a lot youngsters including cal mcgregor as a jumping header before the game starts i don’t know if you’ve noticed them do that yet well spotted i but uh regards to barcas he’s got to i mean we’ve got to be i wonder how hard we’re trying to push him out i mean surely that is something that is of immediate concern he’s going to be in a handsome wage when he comes in for 5 million pounds i’ve seen something about 12 grand a week i think that fanciful i his homeland is a greek international why take the risk of going to celtic for 12 grand a week that’s probably not true far off what he was getting at a team that competes for the greek title every year competed in the champions league with i would estimate he’s on closer to the 20 mark and i think i can admit i know i agree with that because you know international player um and five million pound fee so you’re looking and i know it’s not an exact science but you’re looking at a yeti and you’re looking at the wages of yet on why would bad cash only be on 12 grand i would expect them to be on at least the average for a first teamer which is 16 grand and then above that obviously the higher earners so it’s not really about completely getting them off the wage bill because that won’t happen if we get them loaned out i mean there’s always an agreement between both clubs but you know there’s two aspects of this and i mentioned this the other day because one of the other guys that i reckon needs to be removed and offloaded his ball and goal he’s on the bench tonight which is unusual because we’ve got two left backs on the bench but i think the bench actually although there is some quality in there and there’s some experience when you look at the likes of uh beton i still think that when you look at a bench on a european night at the moment it shows you just how lacking we are in depth and it’s actually quite frightening when you’ve got shaun uragidio on there who haven’t kicked a ball for the first team yet and that’s a bit of a concern um but i would definitely be looking to offload to the guys that are sitting on the bench tonight and back us and also in bowling goalie um how difficult will that be though brian i mean these guys are they now kind of viewed as damaged goods do you think you know it’s interesting so i was thinking about this day after we had a chat but up and obviously we’ve had a lot of rumors of who’s actually conducting the transfer negotiations for celtic at the moment because we don’t have the proper recruitment process in place so as that person is their only job to get players and just know you know what do we actually know if someone’s actually actively trying to trim the squad i’m not 100 sure because i think it’s since i think it’s very strange that guys at ball and golly barca castle’s still there mm-hmm and given how rasquava safety guard is a business strategy it seems insane to me that there’s so many people because the actual numbers are scored are quite big despite the fact the quality index isn’t great and i i think it’s strange that there’s authors still there on decent mages and i think if there was a a business strategy in place would be getting him away i just don’t know if whatever’s dealing with transfers i don’t know someone that normally deals with them so it could be the case they don’t really ream it is like get these players done get these things done whatever it is later i’m not sure it’s just about theory and my other concern about ball and golly is that i said this before as well i don’t know if they’re going to make him are they going to basically say you know you’re not getting a lot i know we’re getting the boy’s skills but the question marks of whether he’s going to start it’s going to be a project if he’s going to be a certain half we don’t really know so they’re looking around and saying we could tell if you’re following goalies back up you don’t really need another so it could be casey’s maybe just haven’t you played well on goalie at some point because the reality is you can’t play taylor every game you can’t play any player every game not how good they are or not so it’s going to be an interesting couple of days but i honestly don’t know if i can see any outgoings at the moment there’s been very little actually very few players have actually left well it’s mad right yeah see what’s interesting see last season right there was a lot of talk of or you wouldn’t be focusing on the off-field stuff if we were still winning you know no one was interested apart from kevin graham apparently that we weren’t being run right have we slightly maybe and because we’re obviously all trying to be positive than that we see if the results hadn’t went our way in the first opening 10 games in the season and obviously still been a couple of problems at the beginning but what we’ve seen since has filled us with optimism there’s no two ways about it but have we taken our eye off that tractor who is running transfers and celtic because safe results only going our way right now that would be a headline in a building that would have been a headline a building by now who is conducting the transfer business at celtic you can guarantee it would have been and i wonder if as a fan base is something that happens what happens on the pitch dictates your perception of what happens off it sometimes you know what i mean because it’s undeniable it’s even brian’s saying that there are i’m sitting there he’s right who is actually even conducting these transfers right now we’ve had rumors of desmond being the sort of main influence and mccarthy and heart albeit ange gets to see gay or neighbor they’re kind of put to him scales is apparently meant to be a desmond signing although the bus is revving up for him as we speak because i’ve seen a two-minute sort of you know video i know you can’t judge on that but he looks a baller but i mean you know you’ve you’ve had all these questions the agent thing uh with uh avada so you you start looking at all these sort of question marks are going imagine if we weren’t getting results right now we’d been pinning down all those factors and then looking at bali still being at the club barca is still being the club and going what’s going on with the transfer strategy itself no wonder we’re not doing too well but the fact is the results in the picture completely like do you know i mean like sort of mask and all that and they’re working with it is i think it’s i think you’re right i think that’s what happens like you almost get disguised you know because it’s so exciting to my 75 just now because the team’s performing it’s good football and everyone’s buying in the arch and you do tend to sort of i suppose overlook a wee bit so in the background the only thing i would say just for some balances i think i think and kind of came out basically said he’s going to deal with all the background issues in the structure once the transfer one was done that’s his main priority so i think that’s a life here’s a wee bit as well but your spot on when it’s when it’s for playing well we’re scoring goals and you’re cheering at park head and you’re enjoying yourself over a few years the last thing i think about is who’s doing the transfers i never get scaled every week and there’s no players coming in the first thing you think about what’s used in the transfers so you’re writing off in your point and if i’m just saying that though you kind of transfer players out once the window is shut it’s a prioritization thing i think you can get those code numbers up then we’ll start yeah now the the action is underway is ed altman half kicked off we are not going to be uh discussing the game live because um we tried to do that a few times last season and the stream was slower than the tax that we were getting in relation to goals coming in so we will go and join the action we’ll be back at half time with russell boyce and brian down and thank you everybody for joining us on a celtic state of mind
