Boston Red Sox vs Minnesota Twins Highlights August 25, 2021 – MLB Highlights | MLB The Show 21

always a treat to see a daytime ball game here fenway park in boston mass today it’s the second of this three-game series between the minnesota twins and the boston red sox we’ve got baseball on the show and it’s coming up next chris sale a left-handed floridian will get the starting assignment dan flezak what do you got hey this guy has really good stuff and he’s commanding his off-speed pitches like he was in his last one he threw the ball really well picking up the win and allowing only two runs if he brings that stuff back in this one it could be back to back-to-back powerhouse performances now to the plate here is byron buxton he will lead this one off today and a little off to begin the afternoon as it’s to three and one now well these red sox entering play here this afternoon coming trying to bounce back from a loss last time out but they’ve been in good form lately five and two over their last seven yeah maddie b we’re looking at a team right now they’re just playing some average baseball through four games of this home stand they split it two and two d row and i think they expect a little bit more yeah and you don’t want to be playing average baseball in front of your home fans they need to find a way to win this game and and try and take three out of the first five at his homestead sale gets the sign full count pitch on its way pulls this one in the air out to left [Applause] marsh has him played perfectly as he puts it away for round number one up next for minnesota gilberto celestino the average just a few ticks shy of 300 for the season so perhaps a hit or two in this one could put him up over the top and a fastball swung on and missed as he just reared back there two away that’s a pretty unique pitch sequence guys usually pitching is all about mixing pitches and location but he threw that all out the window to get that strikeout he offered the same pitch three times in a row so i guess he sort of used that reverse psychology to out-think his opponent into the box now whit merrifield hit high and deep out to left field and he gets there makes the running play and that ends the inning twins are shut down one two three and now the red sox get their turn no score jordan belizevic gets the starting nod for the twins what’s your take on him dan well matt you hate to go into game thinking that you’re going to have to get the bullpen involved but you may have to with this guy on the mound he’s not known for going very deep into games very rarely does he go six innings or more so this very well could be one of those johnny holstaff days and now brandon marsh it laid things off here in the bottom half of the first so one one home lifted down the line in left and that will end up a foul ball here comes the one two weak roller right side reigned in and the throw first is in time one gun padding second the second baseman christian aguayo so one out and nobody aboard and that brings up the former first rounder christian arroyo now the three and two pitch is a wave and a miss he struck him out really good late bite on that slider right there the best ones have that late action that just starts at the last minute they’re so tough to get the bat on and when you’ve got that good slider going it’s a great strikeout pitch [Applause] at the plate now sander bogarts swing in a liner buxton gets under it and makes the catch to end the inning red sox go down one two three and this is still a nothing nothing ball game [Music] second inning set to go and set to go as the veteran first baseman miguel sano now a fastball taken outside here as it moves it to two and two now i know we missed with a fastball right there but this guy’s arsenal you can’t figure out what he’s trying to do he’s got a lot of different directions he can go in right here count full three balls and two strikes the 3-2 pitch and that misses for ball four so it’s a lead-off walk here to start the second well that was a slider and a three-two count and it just didn’t tempt him enough to get a good swing a good job of pitch recognition and knowing the strike zone to draw the free pass there here’s the young catcher wilson contreras hitless in four tries in the ball game yesterday fastball swung on and missed for the first down got him with a good high fastball there danny we see a lot of that pitch in strikeout situations these days what makes it so effective i think matt what makes it such a tough pitch as you’re changing eye levels that fastball up looks so enticing to hit that you think you see that ball as a hitter you think you can drive it but it’s really hard to get on top of that good high hard fastball in now josh donaldson count still full three and two and the payoff pitch and the slider gets him swinging to god that brings up alex kiriloff he takes his first cuts in this one with a man at first and two away and he is safe at second and the wild pitch here could prove costly with two away well the graphic here isn’t going to properly show just how far that pitch was from the strike zone that thing wasn’t even close and i think it made the decision to move up a base pretty easy to make and that misses ball four so it’s first and second now with two out we knew coming into this game that this guy has a tendency to give up a lot of free passes and history repeats itself as he’s already given up two walks here i’ll tell you effectively wild is a pretty tough thing to be so two on with two away and that’ll bring in jorge polanco to hit next one and one here it is in front of the changeup and he can’t keep it fair two strikes on him now line towards center field that’s in there base hit oh he has some trouble with it and they’re gonna take a one-nothing lead as the run comes across to score dan you were one pitch away from getting out of this two outs two strikes on the batter and he’s able to throw out a ribby knob diro it’s hard to get more frustrated than that as a pitcher you’re one pitch away from getting out of a lot of traffic on the bases getting into the inning and next thing you know you give up a two out two strike base hit nothing more frustrating for a pitcher than to have that happen that nibbled the corner there but missed two and one great chance right here as a hitter to be really aggressive with two guys already on pretty good shot he’s going to get a challenge pitch right here the set and the 2-1 ground ball sent back up the middle and that’s through into center field base hit the throw to the plate but this won’t be in time as he’s well safe and the run scores and now time is called here as their pitching coach is going to pay a quick visit to the mound to discuss how they want to attack things here [Applause] standing in now byron bucks two and one now to the twins lead off man wow that’s 40 pitches for him already this doesn’t have the makings of a start that he’s going to go very deep scorch to third zevers fields it cleanly throw the second for the fourth down and the side is retired so it’s two runs on two hits no errors and a couple of men left on now to the bottom of the second twins lead it two to nothing last half of the second set to go and that brings up the third baseman rafael devers you know these next couple innings are really important for these guys i know they’re only down by a couple but they need to get something going on offense to keep pace even though it’s early now the one in one pitch there’s a swing and a drive hit well out to right field looking up is the right fielder the track to the wall and this one is gone a home run [Applause] it’s a solo home run for rafael devers 24 home runs for him on the season and the red sox are on the board it’s now 2-1 well if you’re going to give up a towering blast to one of the best players in their lineup it’s better to do it with no one on base it’s sting sure but a solo shot isn’t going to be the deciding factor in the game [Applause] into the box kyle schwarber he took something off of it there it’s one and two [Applause] now surprisingly here this is on the ground to the right side throw on to first so a good comeback there as he gets the first out of the inning the designated hitter jose [Applause] now the red sox dh jose abreu and as you can see he’s seen that average climb the last week or so the 1-1 and he fouls this one off got him swinging chased it well out of the zone and there are two gone that’s a pretty impressive pitch from a young arm like that if you could spot your pitches there and advantage counts like one and two you’re gonna have a lot of strikeouts and soft contact [Applause] stepping in now hunter renfro tries to change up on him there but it’s a ball two and one that was these twins as they take the field this afternoon four and two over the last six games including a win last time out yeah matty a lot of things trending in the right direction for this team they won their last game they scored a bunch of runs and let’s see if they continue that today even two and two count to hunter renfro bases are empty here with two men out had to wait back on the change up and he did a good job just to make contact and this will miss down low in the dirt so he’s working full now at three and two when a pitcher is close to working through a quick inning that’s when you really need to grind out some at bats he’s done a good job of that and that’s really big when you’re hitting towards the bottom of the order did well just to make contact there as he spoils off a good change up this is on the ground over to first he’s got it throw cleanly into first and that ends the inning red sox able to get one right back on the solo home run we’ve played two and this is now a two to one ball game ready now is gilberto celestino struck out in his last trip to the plate yeah and kind of shocked he got blown away with a fastball you could tell he was late on that one and we’ll see if he tries to cheat to something this a b even count two balls and two strikes into the corner and slicing foul the 2-2 one more time swing in the line drive that’s his first base hit making one for two now outside of home runs nothing fires me up more than watching a good baseball player drive the ball at the opposite field talking about hitting the inside half of the baseball that’s exactly what happened right there and when we say inside half of the baseball imagine the ball coming to a complete stop halfway between home plate and the pitcher’s mouth and then cutting that baseball in half and highlighting the inside half that’s where you’re trying to take the knob of your bat or the hands to that spot and carved the inside half of the baseball with power hitters count now heading out towards shallow right is in a few steps as he takes it for the first down the next twin up miguel cino he scored after reaching on a walk in his first ad bath celestino runner at first with one gun in the inning [Music] inside for a ball as he falls behind to him here three and one [Applause] tried to crush that ball and now perhaps needs to shorten up with two stripes hey usually the second time through the order you start seeing an incorporation of some more off speed stuff but this guy’s located and feeling really good about his fastball two back to back so he ran the fastball by him for the punch out miguel cenone goes down for out number two in the top half [Applause] at the plate wilson contreras pitches high to throw and he is out at second caught stealing to end the inning another look at the throw down that results in a third out on the bases more matinee baseball here on a wednesday afternoon following this [Applause] riding in for boston jaron duran as we run you the numbers to see the splits between july and august 1-1 exactly high in the air out to center field buckstop is right there one down one gone here in the boston third and from the on deck circle into the batter’s box comes christian vasquez a two-to-one score here as we play inning number three lifted down the line and left but this is just going to wind up being a foul ball here comes the one two [Music] he’s offered at and missed he chased it for strike three boy there’s nothing better from a pitcher standpoint to watching that high fastball a high piece of cheese swung at it that pitch looks so inviting to hit but it’s awfully tough to put in play [Applause] at the plate now brandon marsh and that misses there so he runs the count full now this one’s flared out toward left in there the base hit man this guy’s really starting to swing the stick again d-roll that extends his hitting streak to nine games yeah he’s leaking into three series right here now nine games that’s getting firm he’s seeing the ball well and he’s making a proper adjustments at the plate and here’s a slider for a cold strike and he’s behind one and two a now on first with two away [Applause] he got him lively fastball that time and it puts an end to the inning one left for the red sox our score remains two to one [Music] back now at fenway park and here’s heidi watney with a report thanks matt in between innings i was able to catch up with the manager of the twins to discuss his thoughts on minnesota’s lineup so far and overall he’s really happy with the bats they’re putting together it’s still pretty early in the game but they’ve seen a lot of pitches already and he thinks the two runs they’ve pushed across so far is just the beginning given the quality of the at-bats they’re putting together okay thank you heidi all set for the start of the fourth and next to hit is the catcher wilson contreras now the 2-1 [Applause] a swing and a drive sent out toward the gap and it’s off the green monster and the twins have something brewing right away it’s a leadoff double everyone knows that this guy’s numbers are not where he wants them to be so far this year but you never know by that swing he looked fluid and confident driving that pitch for a double we’ll see if that gets him going a bit to the plate now josh donaldson and a good pitch there is this ball swung on and pops straight up the chute right around home plate and he’ll stay with it here as he puts the squeeze on it they’re out number one so we’re under on second with one down down and up next is alex kiriloff 2-2 helpful well i think this is the kind of approach they need against such a prolific starter you can’t count on putting up a lot of runs so getting him out of the game has to be the priority working at bats full counts running up the pitch count is a great way of doing that and no one can corral that one base hit and a relay home and not in time as he just crosses the plate in time [Applause] you love the aggressive base running right there it’s not easy to make that throw and give that catcher time to adjust his feet and get that tag down a very aggressive send right there you take a chance you hope to throw us a little bit offline and that paid off right there [Applause] so now to the plate or polanco no offer on that one two balls and a strike i don’t blame him for not coming over the heart of the plate he circled this guy on the lineup card when he got to the yard today he’s been swinging one of the hotter bats in the game ready with two balls and a strike lofted in the air out toward right center right fielder is on the run oh and he can’t come up with it and they won’t even attempt to run on that arm and right so despite the runner moving on the pitch it’ll wind up first and second here wow that’s surprising right there hit-and-run tactic used to perfection ball’s hit to the outfield the batter does his job i don’t know how that runner’s standing on second still you tip your hat to the outfield to get it in super quick but he’s got to take the chance to get the third kick down the third base line but a foul ball one and two the count now from the belt the pitch swing and a liner and that’s in there base hit and they’ll hold that runner at third as everybody moves up a base and they’re loaded with one away well you’re going as well as he is not even a two-strike count is going to get in your way yeah maddie he’s having a monster season well over 300 right there when you’re feeling that confident at the plate it doesn’t matter what the count is you’re willing to go deep and still feel confident [Applause] [Applause] the 2-1 home hard hit towards center catch made in center here comes the runner from third and not in time as the run scores [Applause] well that wasn’t your standard sacrifice it was hit pretty low and hard so it wasn’t a given they were going to send him but they did and they add a number to the run column so the next to bat will be gilberto celestino two men on two away here in the fourth so the bases will be loaded now with two away and i’m pretty sure he thought that was a strike he’s thinking what do i have to do put a bow on it walk it down and put in the catcher’s glove by myself i think it got called a little outside so he has to put it behind him now whitmer field next to hit one of the bigger spots in the ball game so far base is juiced now with two away popped up and a leaping effort but it’s off his glove and the runner scores from third as they extend their lead dan after this infield hit right here this guy has to be so frustrated he’s been having a rough outing and he’s not discriminating the way he gives him up no he isn’t you know what he’s gonna do after this one he’s gonna go to the movies and watch the movie about himself the rocky horror pitching show because this has been a nightmare and now miguel sano one strike count to the twins first baseman it’s one thing to get hit around but it’s far worse when you’re getting yourself into trouble by not throwing strikes every pitcher’s been there but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating or unacceptable the royal brings it and they’re in to escape the monster inning as this side is retired so they do get three that ending that’s the good news the bad news is they leave three men on base on now to the bottom half of any number four the twins are in front five to one ready to go in the bottom of the fourth and that’ll bring up the power hitting shortstop xander bogards and here’s a fastball not close as he runs it to two and one now now a ball slapped hard the opposite way celostino is there one away good contact to start out the inning thought he might be on base with some sort of a hit but it hung up there too long just unlucky that time next up for the red sox rafael devers off to a fine start in this one after launching a homer his first time up yeah and he wasn’t fooled at all by the change up last time kept his hands back and absolutely destroyed that ball so i gotta think he’s not gonna see a change up in this scenario right here a swing and a miss for route number two and a ball he had no chance of making contact with [Applause] and next it will be the left-handed power threat kyle schwarber [Applause] the 3-1 a swing and a drive sent out toward the gap a solo home run for kyle schwarber number 14 on the season and it’s now a 5-2 game hey that’s the price you pay right there when you try and sneak a fastball pass this guy power hitter and every power hitter in the league knows you got to start with the numero uno number one man you’ve got to get on the heater and adjust to everything else and he did just that into the box jose of grayer now a slider here but this will miss off the plate away and it’s ball four well he gives up the walk but that was a really good pitch might have been just out of his own but not by much a lot of guys would have gone fishing for that pitch so sometimes the hitter just outlasts you [Applause] standing in now hunter renfro and the check swing here as he couldn’t help himself and it’s ruled strike two still hanging with him another good swing to keep it going fouled away seventh pitch of the at-bat coming up started to go did he hold up in time yes as the first base on fire it’s ball three now here comes the payoff pitch there’s a swing and a high drive into left center field back on it is the left fielder still going back and it’s gone into the monster seats on a rim throw with a two-run shot and even 20 home runs for him now thus far as they pull within one here it’s now a 5-4 game another excellent swing right there that’s multiple home runs in the same inning watch yourself you’re missing over the heart of the plate [Applause] at the plate now jaron duran reached for him popped into the air back behind second origin is there to make the catch and the side is retired so two home runs in the inning lead to three runs on the scoreboard we’ve played four full it’s the twins five and the red sox four next ahead will be wilson contreras one for two with a double on the ledger so far sale gets the sign here’s the 1-1 rip down the line but this will get fouled it’s a ball in two strikes pitch taken several inches below the zone in fact and there’s a base hit on the line [Applause] there’s another line drive lead off single right now i mean they have an unbelief they’ve had an unbelievable scouting report on these pictures today they are finding barrels they are not trying to do too much guys are staying in a big part of the field and hitting everything on the screws at the plate josh donaldson hit back up the middle that’s through and he’s got his first base hit he’s one for three there’s a hard hit ground ball pitcher not able to get a glove on it a hard single up the middle yeah watch your lips right there dad sent it back right where it came from to the plate now alex the one-two offering looked like a slider that time but it’s two and two great game plan so far by this offense they’re not chasing any of those breaking balls out of the zone count remains two and two [Applause] oh my this ball is crushed where will this one end up gone and that one had some extra distance three run home run down the line in right number 17 for him on the season and they double him up it’s eight to four no doubt an impressive home run so we’ll employ show track for a more in-depth look 112 miles an hour was the exit velocity off the bat so it’s no wonder why it ended up having the impressive distance that it did here comes the red sox manager up out of the dugout on his way to the mound and he’s going to make a change as that’ll be all for his starter chris sale so he’ll leave after working just four innings and this was not the kind of start he was looking for i’m quite sure austin davis the 6’4 southpaw comes in out of the bulkman to do the pitching 65 austin [Applause] [Music] so now to the plate or polanco wow change up just off the black and it’s two-in-one some action out in the bullpen couple of right-handers starting to loosen up now the 2-1 this one’s down to third devers gloves it and finally there’s the first out of the inning that’ll bring up luisa a couple of singles to his credit thus far three runs already home here now a swing and he pops him up this is right out in front of the mound davis takes charge himself out there and there’s two down and now back to the lead off spot in the twins lineup stepping in byron buxton he lined out in his last trip so looking for better fortunes here yeah he hit it hard that’s all you can ask you can’t control the results sometimes matty just unlucky with the placement three balls and two strikes to the twin center fielder now the payoff pitch home gets him looking up around the letters but the big blow of the inning comes right here a three run home run bottom of the fifth coming up it’s the twins eight and the red sox four set now for the bottom of the fifth and that’ll bring in the veteran catcher christian vasquez swing and he takes this the other way to right and a base hit so the leadoff man is aboard hey another lead off knock right there this game has been full of offense full of traffic on the base pass let’s see who’s gonna get that big double in the gap to clear them [Applause] into the box now brandon march he loses him on ball four boy oh boy that’s a tough one for the pitcher he’s definitely wondering where the heck was that pitch i think he called it our strike zone says otherwise now here comes the twins manager on his way to the mound and a change is in the offing as that’ll be all for his starter this afternoon so the line score will show he departs after just four innings of work and you know they wanted more out of him than this as he won’t even stand to be the winning picture here simeon woods richardson comes on now in an awfully difficult situation as there are two on here with nobody out [Applause] christian arroyo will be his first test out of the bullpen and it’ll be a tough test indeed as he’ll face him with two on and nobody out here [Applause] this a couple strikeouts early in the game but he’s done a much better job than this that bad trying to get ahead and put himself in a good hitters count [Applause] and a check swing here as he couldn’t help himself and it’s ruled strike two drive to left that’s in there face hit vasquez is on his way home and he’s safe at the play as it’s now an 8-5 ball game [Applause] and he takes a big swing at that one as this one’s lifted high in the air and deep out to left field bangs off the billboard and it’s out of here [Applause] so a three-run blast is straight away left 19th home run for him on the season as that makes this an eight all ball game and we’ve seen four round trippers from these guys so far dan diro what do you make of all this zero i don’t know what you think this is one of those cases where i think they’re hitters right now they must be seeing beach balls left there right now four bombs already in this one yeah this lineup from top to bottom has power just oozing out of it and this guy’s missing over the harder to plate that’s what happened and don’t forget he gave up a long ball earlier in this inning so you can understand why he wasn’t too aggressive with him there when he got him to three and one he wasn’t too anxious to challenge him stepping in next kyle schwarber one for two in the ball game thus far eight runs just seven hits and no errors for the red sox to this point two and one with the red sox first baseman off-speed pitch misses here and he runs it to 3-1 it’s clear he just hasn’t been able to find any rhythm out there pretty much unable to hit any of his spots and now he’s at three and one and he’s put him into another great hitting count [Applause] hitters count all the way here it comes and he lays off their ball four so back-to-back walks have him in business here with nobody out right about now the manager’s question of his decision to bring this guy in if you can’t trust a reliever to throw strikes you can’t trust him at all we’ll see if he comes to get him sooner than later [Applause] next will be the designated hitter jose abreu deburs on second schwarber on it first with nobody out just behind the fastball there two strikes now that’s what you call a challenge fastball right there boys i don’t know if he was necessarily trying to miss up in the zone like he did but he got away with it right there and put the fastball behind him for one [Applause] next to stand in is hunter renfro comes in one for two with that home run he hit earlier that last that bad he didn’t crush that change up for a home run but listen a home run is a home run this guy’s awfully strong and he can hit it out to any part of the ballpark took two balls and two strikes now [Applause] fastball didn’t miss by much and it’s a full countdown three and two for the guy in the mountain this is one of those innings where nothing comes easy he’s throwing a bunch of pitches and this a b hasn’t been any different definitely laboring at the moment payoff pitch on its way and he misses fall four [Applause] well some might say a walk there is okay because you’ve got first base open but he’s been struggling out there and if you’re going to work around hitters you don’t want to work around hitters in the bottom of the lineup next up jaren durant he flew out in his last day being four runs here in this half inning to two and two now lifted down the line and left but this is just going to wind up being a foul ball fouled off [Applause] he set [Applause] well i think that pitch is the result of a lot of foul balls he might have tried to do a little bit too much with it trying to get him to swing through it but it just ended up taking off on him making him work out there the ninth pitch of the at-bat coming up [Applause] lifted the other way out to left center long run for the center fielder and he brings it down to end the inning as the go-ahead run is left stranded but four runs score in the inning three coming right here on the three run home run five innings complete and we are deadlocked at eight a piece top half of the sixth about to get started and standing in the rookie outfielder gilberto celestino tough pitch to lay off but he did and it’s ball four so the lead off hitters aboard to start the sixth man when the game is tied the last thing you can afford to do is walk the lead off hitter gotta focus on getting that ground ball now with merrifield next to back tries to change up on him there but it’s a ball two and one sometimes you got to be aggressive offensively but sometimes you just let the pitcher dig his own grave patience and discipline seem to be the way to go right here high and deep to right center racing back to center fielder still ranging back and he tracks it down nice play for the first down had to go a long way to make that running catch and here it is again with the show track data took a great angle at it showed nice closing speed and ended up running close to 120 feet to bring it in no doubt that grabs saved extra bases at the plate now miguel sano and they pitch out here but nothing’s going on the 2-1 strike two swinging oh and he can’t catch up to the fastball as he swings and misses for the second hour man they’ve really had his numbers so far in this series that’s his fifth strikeout in this series alone takes over here with the runner at first and two gone in the inning number 56 hunza standing in now wilson contreras one and two to the twins catcher [Music] here comes the one two swung on and missed he got him on strikes one left for minnesota this remains in eight all time [Applause] bottom of the sixth inning on its way but first here’s heidi watney thanks matt during the commercial break i talked about the red sox offense with the boston manager and flat out he was very pleased with the quality of their at-bats he told me it feels like every ball they put in play has been a laser and the numbers back that up six of their hits have come off the bat at 90 miles an hour or harder guys all right thanks heidi ready to go for the last half of the inning and now it’ll be the catcher christian vasquez this guy uses that two seamer to set up his other pitches two seamer in breaking ball away gets the sign here comes the 2-1 ball even at two and two hit the other way out toward right field celostino is there to put it away for route number one and with one away we’ll bring you a look at the current division standings and you can see these guys have their work cut out for them if they want to make noise in the division now back to the top of the lineup stepping in brandon marsh one for two on his line so far in the game just a bit low tough call but it’s two and two strikes [Music] so [Music] line drive to center field buxton is there chugon [Applause] he got that one pretty good it just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry over the outfielder’s head small difference where the ball hit the bat could have made all the difference [Applause] into the box christian arroyo the bouncer to the left side field it cleanly throw in time and the side is retired nothing doing here this half seventh inning coming up and we are deadlocked at eight a piece now to start ending number seven number [Applause] zero seventh inning ready to roll and standing in is the veteran third baseman josh donaldson [Music] the 1-1 home waves and misses for strike number two [Applause] and it’s fouled away [Music] and a swing and a miss there on a late-breaking slider as he stepped down on strikes for the second time this afternoon good job of making him chase a pitch for the strike out there yeah matt that’s the advantage of getting ahead in account you can really force hitters to expand their zone and protect and when they’re in that mode getting them to go after a pitch they can’t do much with becomes a lot easier stepping in now alex kirala that’s a fall no offer on that one two balls and a strike those were two great executed pitches right there away from this batter he can hurt you in a heartbeat i don’t think anything’s gonna leak out over the heart of the plate eight runs 11 hits and no errors in the ball game for minnesota [Applause] and a sinker dips too low there into the dirt in fact and some action now in the boston bullpen as a right-hander is up and throwing the 3-1 and he lays off ball four now the potential go-ahead run is on base here and that hole at that i feel like he really didn’t want to challenge him and i’m really surprised by that because i think this is the guy in the bottom third of the order you have to go right after stradding forward now is the dh jorge polanco he was retired via the ground ball last time up yeah maddie expect this pitcher to try and get the same result that’s his last at-bat right here the double play is in order anything on the ground the way this defense is they could certainly roll too full count three balls and two strikes to the twins dh possible go ahead runs on first one away good battle count remains full looked like the cut fastball there and he got him to swing through it for the second out this is the pitch i think we’ll see a lot from him in this game the cutter starting in on the hitters in the opposite batters box it could be a real effective pitch when it’s located well and that one was right there so now to the plate luisa rios hit in the air down the right field line renfro will reach out with one hand to make the catch on the move and that ends the inning wins wind up stranding one score remains even at eight piece [Music] caleb gets the call from the pen to take the ball for the home seven number fifty in is xander bogarts he’s working on a one for three thus far the 1-1 pitch high in the air afterwards shallow right celostino has to come in a few steps but he has it for route number one ruffian [Applause] on the fastball that time out number two that was a big strike out there guys the best pitchers have the ability to strike guys out when they really need to and that second out what’s really important at this point of the game could be something we look back on later when the game’s over [Applause] and now kyle schwarber one and two now as that one’s fouled off here comes now here’s a fly ball well hit racing back the left fielder and just short of a home run this ball’s off the wall and your go-ahead run is in there at second base as he’s got himself a two-out double wow he was willing that thing to get out of here would have given them the lead right here late in the game but it ends up hitting off the wall and he heads into second with an extra base hit we’ll see if the next man up can come through with a clutch here [Applause] into the box now jose abreu skied into straight away right and nothing will come of the two out double as the inning is over two out double left stranded more matinee baseball here on a wednesday afternoon following this ryan brazier summoned from the bullpen as he’ll do so to start the eighth number 70. [Applause] at the plate now is byron buxton he was punched out looking at strike three last time through yeah maddie and hopefully he got it out of his system especially now he’s got a bear down he gets the two strikes in this spot one ball and two strikes to count the one-two [Music] and a good bite to that slider as he swings through it for the first out of the enemy it’s always nice to keep a guy that has good wheels off base and that’s just what they did right there big strikeout keep that guy off the base at the plate now gilberto celestino now a good pitch around the knees but it doesn’t quite catch the bottom of the zone and now the red sox will get a left-hander up and throwing in the bullpen just behind the fastball there two strikes now i think it’s about time to choke up on that bat get that foot down he’s awfully tardy right now looks at a fastball low here and it’s full three and two whit merrifield waits on deck now the three and two pitch and he connects with it this one’s hit deep out to left center field and they have taken the lead [Applause] so a solo shot here to left center field as they’ve taken a one-run lead what a great piece of clutch hitting right there to give his boys the lead gonna put a lot of pressure on the opposition after score with only six outs to go into the box with merrifield and he fouls this one off as we near the end of this one it’s clear the long ball has played a big role in today’s outcome dan dero what are your final thoughts on what we’ve seen yeah just non-competitive pitches in some big situations dan and the offense took full advantage you know d-ro one of the things about pitching is you want to have location and it was obvious in this one today that the pitchers weren’t on point and what happens when that happens hitters make to pay the long ball was a big part of this one here and the number four minnesota hitter miguel cino hole for three with a couple of strikeouts for him to this point in the ball game two out nobody on on the ground of the right side rained in and the throw to first is in time but the damage has been done as the side has retired but not before the twins get one and it comes on this solo home run bottom of the eighth coming up it’s the twins nine and the red sox eight in the bottom half of the eighth bottom of any number eight set to go and next it’ll be the outfielder hunter renfro 1-1 takes a pass and misses that strike two now action in the bullpen as their closer starts to get loose out there go one two [Applause] boy good cutting action to that is that’s the first out of the inning people always talk about how important getting the lead off men on base is and it’s true so in the eighth inning of a one-run game that’s a really nice job of attacking a hitter and sending him packing [Applause] at the plate jaron duran now a swing and he just fouls this one away so one two softly down the line toward first and the off-balance throw gets him nice play for the out now paddy catcher next it’ll be christian vasquez he’s got a hidden three at bats to this point down the left field line and deep and that will end up a foul ball bases are empty here with two men out struck him out so he sat down on strikes for the second time today down in order go the red sox still down to run it’s a 9-8 ball game andrew miller enters from the pen to start the ninth inning as he’ll try to keep the score right where it is heading to the bottom of the night miller so stepping in is wilson contreras lifetime against andrew miller he’s gone two for eight he’s set here comes the 1-1 this is line to left and there’s a base hit and this could wind up as an important insurance strike here as the lead-off man’s aboard to start the ninth that face it was screaming off the bat and our showtrack technology more than confirms it 111 miles an hour was the exit velocity of that line drive [Applause] to the plate now trump and a pretty good take there on the slider down it’s ball three i love the approach out on the mound everything’s down in the zone as it should be but now you find yourself in a 3-1 count do you elevate a little bit more and get back in this zone or you just pitch around them hitters count all the way here it comes fouled away [Applause] lifted in the air at towards left center center fielder on the run he’s there and records the first down alex kiera will stand in as he’s accounted for one of the biggest at-bats of the game so far a three-run shot back in the fifth that’s really energized his ball club [Applause] might have thought it was high but it’s a strike three and two now did a good job to shorten up and protect the plate and he’ll have another shot at it here lucky he got a piece right there he was definitely late on that pitch after seeing a previous off speed pitch and a swing and a misses they got him with the slider there two away well his struggles continue it’s been a rough government at the plate with him and watching this at bat it’s clear to me that his rhythm and timing they’re just all off even as a pitcher like i was you could tell these things and exploit them in now or polanco and he’ll fall behind now to one and [Applause] so it two a one-run lead as they head in for their final set of swings so no runs on a hit here no errors one man left on nothing further in the minnesota night last chance for the red sox stranger things have happened in this one though it’s nine to eight taylor rogers comes out of the bullpen to shut things down here in the night all set for the bottom of the ninth and that’ll bring forth the rookie outfielder brandon marsh yeah it’s always a nightmare taking on another team’s closer trying to get back into a game especially in the ninth inning but having your lead off guy up to start that inning is as good as you could have hoped for it so let’s see if he can get something started here hot shot down the line i know it wasn’t pretty right there dan but that has to frustrate the pitcher rudolph guy and he comfortably gets on usually creates a problem especially tough when you get as late in the game as we are right now any time you get that lead-off guy on and have that pitcher start pitching out of the stretch it always puts more stress on that pitcher [Applause] and he’ll try to bunt that man to second but this one kicks foul [Applause] fouled off marsh aboard here at first with nobody out [Applause] another one sent foul put that into memory bank first time he breaks out a curveball right there and it’s a pretty good one another one two swinging a little blooper to center here’s the center fielder he gets to it and makes the catch for the first out well [Applause] stepping in now sander bogarts just hung in there on that one one out one on in a one-run game [Applause] liner towards second but this is hauled in by the second baseman now patty [Applause] they’ll be looking for something to drive into the gap and drive home that time run from first and a half-hearted attempt that time as you pull up the plane to the plate it’s a ball in two strikes now fans on their feet in a one-run ball game in the last of the ninth last strike now for the red sox swung right over the top of that one is this is a little dribbler out in front of the mound though on the first here is gonna do it and the twins have taken the first two games of this series on the road as this one is over the close one nine to eight at the end of the game in this one minnesota came through late taking the lead in the eighth to secure the victory caleb fieldbarn earns his third win of the year in relief taylor rogers earns the save out of the bullpen number 36 on the season so that’ll do it for us for mark derosa dan plizak heidi watney and
