Bubble Snake Activity with Scott and Cosmo ?

a broombank library's activity zone my name's scott i'm here with my assistant cosmo who was quite sleepy but seems to have woken up for our session which is very good of him and today we're going to learn how to make a bubble snake which is something pretty cool that we can do with some really basic stuff that you should have around the house so come in a little bit closer and i'll show you what you need okay so you're going to need a plastic bottle like this one not too thick like a water bottle like this that you can fit a sock around you're going to need a pair of scissors you're going to need an old sock or a piece of fabric like an old towel or something like that white is good because we can see the color that we're going to use you'll need one or two elastic bands you'll need some dish washing soap you'll need a bowl some food coloring you can get this at coles if you need to or at woolworth's it's a packet of four different food colorings but whatever colors you've got are great cosmo likes food coloring don't you buddy and finally you'll need something to do your experiment on and in this case i've just got this plastic lid from our container so let's get started right so first things first grab your video come in closer and i'll show you what's going to do so i grabbed your bottle let's start again so first things so first things first come in closer and i'll show you what to do with your bottle so take your bottle now you might want to get mum and dad or your guardian to give you a hand take your bottle and what we're going to want to do is cut the end off the bottle using the pair of scissors but because this is a nice soft bottle it's not too hard be careful because sometimes the edge of the bottle can be a little bit sharp we won't need that so we can put it aside there's some water in there but you're not thirsty are you buddy no i think you're curious all right so put the bottle to the side grab some dishwashing liquid and pour it into the bowl like that you won't need too much just a little bit and the bowl needs to be big enough so you can dip your bottle in if you need to right now take the sock and your scissors and we're going to cut the end off the sock so you need just enough fabric to be able to cover the end of this so you don't need too much just work look at the size of the socks the bottle come in closer and i'll show you take the scissors cut the sock now remember to be careful with the scissors because they can be sharp take the sock and we're going to put the sock over the end of our bottle like this see how it's nice and tight take a rubber band i've got two i'll put another one on just to make sure that it's nice and tight so you can see now that is nice and tight so now is where we make some bubbles now bubbles are pretty cool because bubbles are molecules of soap so little tiny tiny little pieces of soap that form two layers and in between is some water so it's like a like a bubble and water soap and water sandwich and that's how a bubble forms and then when it forms into a like a sphere like a round thing it's the sandwich of water and soap and inside we've got some air in the middle so we can now make some bubbles with this we'll pop the lid off because we're going to need to blow in we'll take this come in closer and i'll show you give it a good dip in here so that this is nicely covered and soaked covered doesn't like soap no gross isn't it cats don't like so very much and then you should be able to just blow on the end and make ourselves a bubble snake at the moment it looks more like a bubble blob or a bubble jellyfish but if we keep blowing we get a really really long string of bubbles pretty cool huh and like i said remember each one of these bubbles is an amazing sandwich of soap and a bit of water in the middle and then some soap on the outside and that forms all around the air inside and keeps it in there unless we pop it of course now that's pretty cool but we can make this even cooler so we'll put our bubbles down on the mat that we've got because we didn't want to get bubbles everywhere and now we'll grab some of the colors so come in and we're going to make our bubble snake really colorful so i'm going to grab a little bit of red you can keep i'll just show you what to do and you can see on the top of the bubble snake i'm just going to wipe away some of the bubbles and then i'm going to put some food coloring and you can see it's sinking into the sock now with food coloring you always want to be careful not to get it on yourself so i should have rolled up my sleeves before i did this because i don't want to get yellow or blue or red or whatever all over my shirt and you definitely don't want to get it all over your clothes or over the couch or anywhere or on cosmo if you've got a pet because i mean cosmo would look i think he'd probably look quite cold blue but i don't think he would like it very much a little bit of blue and we've got some green so i'm going to put some green as well on the top like that all right now let's see what happens ah there's some interesting colors coming out so we've got green mostly green actually bubbles are mostly coming out great i must have put heaps of green on so you can see i've got loads of green bubbles coming out if i wanted to get some red ones i guess i'd have to put more red food coloring on than i did because it's coming out mostly green there's a little bit of blue coming out the top but it's quite hard to see it's mostly the green yellow sort of ones coming out there and that's because the water that's gone into our bubble sandwich between the soap oh cosmo thank you for getting in the way of the camera there buddy the water that's gone into our soap and water sandwich is slightly green so now the entire bubble looks green and you can see at the very bottom there's actually green water on the end of these bubbles which is why i've got this here to stop the mess from going everywhere because food coloring stains things pretty badly so that is how you make your own bubble snake and your own bubble snake maker you can wash your sock if you want to you can put different colors on you can take it outside i've got a balcony so i could see if i could make it go all the way to the ground have fun with it if you enjoyed this this after this activity session
