CWTCC #74: HBD Jack Kirby; Remembering Chadwick Boseman

gonna get a sequel with him on silver age but no you say you work someday so funny funny thing is uh i asked cookie to get in the show last week but it was already full so i had to take uh i had to wait i couldn’t enjoy so i was just just sitting in the sidelights and watching you guys talk yeah because he’s been doing the rotating uh panels now you know with with money people coming in but it’s great to have you on the show man you’re always welcome to come on the show if you want to come and and talk comics and anything i will whenever i have the time i will show up um but then here’s the thing i’m just saying this for your live audience or for you to understand today i really didn’t plan on coming in i was just planning on probably reading a few books and writing who’s calling me wow i have a phone call i am so sorry just going away that’s all right so today we’re going to touch on the you see the ticker going by today is the birthday of jack kirby he will be 104 years old so you know if if we strike up you know talk about the life of jack kirby and you know some of our favorite works of his and you know his storytelling and his impact and not only just comics but in in everything in terms of you know the superhero universe and you know building everything worth of the mcu you know a lot of that is his work being put on screen so that’s definitely going to be an interesting conversation then after we talk kirby we’re going to you know honor chad with bozeman you know and talk more about what he meant to just people in general you know along with his movies and we’re not really going to try and delve into re recasting the black panther and stuff like nah we’re just going to focus on the man that has chatted with bozeman you know his movies his life and what he accomplished so sound like a plan man sorry about that i really am sorry i was not expecting this call alright sorry bro um okay going back to what i was saying i really didn’t plan on coming into this show but i really felt like talking to you guys again so i was like okay you know what [ __ ] it i’m gonna delay all the plans that i have today and get on here cool cool i would like to say nice to meet you big world comments nice to meet you okay yeah um when it comes to jack kirby for me i i i didn’t start appreciating him until later on in life like after he passed and you know and i started looking more into his work because while his art didn’t grow on me no seeing it as a kid you know when i used to get those reprints of of x-men and fantastic four i thought it was fine but it didn’t really interest me until i got older and started looking more deeper into his work and especially when i would say the new gods omnibus came out and reading that show just how that kirby was just much more than the artist you know he was a visionary like when you really look at his he had a vision and he had a goal to make these stories much more important than you know just a regular combo story and his stories whenever i read them they felt grandiose and bombastic in terms of scale and how far he can push the limits of of writing the comic book story especially with new gods and dark sides and apocalypse there was a lot of like big things that happened and he always narrates it in a way where it may be a lot of dialogue and a lot of narration but it’s also a lot of storytelling and a lot of information that’s necessary for when you get later in the story it comes back into the play and that and when i read some of that and then i read some of his mr miracle and i was like now i see why jack kirby is revered you know not only as an artist but as a visionary you know his work really was grandiose and it was spectacular and he knew how to tell the story from beginning to end and you know not lose track of his vision now sometimes there’s always interference from the bigwigs you know and we’ve seen that in marvel you know where you know he would map out his story through his art and have notes and then stan lee will change all that and just add his stuff to it so kirby never really could tell his full vision of it because stan lee was always over here changing stuff and then when he got to dc they wasn’t like enamored with his art because of you know the faces you know some of the characters and of course superman was known when he did superman they wasn’t too happy with how he drew superman especially his face so they had somebody else redraw superman over kirby’s art so kirby never truly got respected even at that time for his art you know by marvel and dc even though they respected them but they kind of disrespected them at the same time sure and i always looked at that as it’s the reason why it took years for him to finally gain respect especially after he passed because i remember when i was younger when he passed i was reading some of his tops work you know night glider bom bombass uh captain glory and you know the jack kirby secret city saga and you know i liked those stories and i always associated them with jack kirby because his name was right there on top of it it was jack kirby’s secret city saga and as i got older like i said i start rediscovering more of his older work because you know even if i liked that they were written by other people and had other people’s art on it but i want to see more of him his art and his writing and you know i started gaining more appreciating appreciation of jack kirby within the 2000s to the point where you know the man is a legend and he’s a big reason why comic books especially in these movies are what they are because of the characters that he created in in the 60s you know the marvel universe was built by jack kirby you know stan lee co-created a lot of that stuff but jack kirby was division that put all those characters together and he drew all those characters you know i mean the man was unstoppable when it came to just drawing because that’s what he did that’s what he does all he does is draw that was his life work so just seeing how much he did in the 60s in terms of building the marvel universe is huge in terms of impact legacy and just the amount of work that he was able to do within those that decade yeah funny oh go ahead you go ahead man no so it’s funny that you mention his legacy because kirby created my one of my favorite characters of all time which is mr miracle and he also created the x-men fantastic four i mean yeah fantastic phone yeah captain america who particularly are in my top 10 favorite uh characters of all time and these characters still inspire me to this day especially captain america just uh the moral compass of marvel of marvel’s universe so i will always be grateful to jack before that yeah the great thing about jack kirby was never the best artist like i mean we could name a bunch of artists like alex ross you know and other people off the top of our heads that are better artists than kirby what made kirby special was he was able to do his art without making a mistake he would put his put you know in one corner and then draw and he was done and he was able to do that and he was able to do things so quickly and still at the same quality it was amazing and then he also had a vision like you said to be able to when stan would give him you know an idea of a character or something you know he would take it make it his own and then we’d see him come alive and then he did his own stuff with fourth world and some other things too so that that’s what makes jack kirby so special is because not necessarily he was the best artist but he was just able to do things that the others couldn’t and still while his art is not the best quality it’s not bad either it’s still good art yeah there’s plenty of pages that i see where this artwork is average and then he surprised me with some pages like wow that like like i said the grandiose the scope of his art when he does those splash pages and he just shows the whole world it’s fantastic no and i i agree will that he’s not the best artist but for what he did it was strikingly and it was visually pleasing especially when he went to the scope of his whole artwork and telling those stories and he also was one of the first to do a lot of the things that he did yeah and and like you said the fact that he was able to work on multiple titles in that decade and just pump out all these books you know and and back then you know it’s hard to at least even today’s ours would be like it’s hard to even for them to keep up on one series you know because of deadlines and stuff kirby was able to do that with multiple books at the same time that’s impressive that’s really that really is he was able to do i think interiors and covers on i think he got he got up to multiple books every month he was able to do ff i think he did x-men and avengers and avengers i think he did like four or five books a month most people can do uh one comic a month most artists he was doing like four or five i mean you add how much work the man could put out i mean between those three books you had tales of suspense tales of astonish that he worked on journey into mystery with thor i mean the the amount of work he put in in the 60s was just astronomically incredible yeah no i don’t think anyone’s done it since no and and you know back then like there wasn’t no like high detailed things like you know every panel had to have a background and stuff like most of the time when you look at the older comics you just see the talking head but you don’t see no background if the there’s a building involved as soon as they go to the talking head for that panel it’s just a white background or something like that so that’s how they was able to continue to put in the art but still kirby put in lots of work just doing all these characters and and i i understood some of the criticism especially when it came to like dc and how kirby drew faces because most of his faces did look the same [Music] like i i you see all the books and i’m like man that looked like reed richards on that you know it looked like like xavier when he’s bald yeah so he had like the same faces but then i i can make that argument for artists that i’ve seen recently they’ll never change up their faces so that’s almost like something that when you when you have a style it’s almost as if you’re going to draw them multiple books you know in terms of the same faces and stuff i mean it’s very difficult to switch art styles so if you stick to if you’re just in one it’s really hard to just switch it up and make different characters for different character designs but he did the basic he did the best we could with whatever he was given and this one is just amazing that’s all i’m going to say and you know he he he was given like basically like cliff notes and then he would expand them you know like there really was like no script for him to go baseball the entire silver surfer was an accident thought up by jack kirby stan lee basically gave him the note of i want the ff to basically have to fight god and then when jack drew that he’s like okay well let’s do this powerful then he might need someone to come and like announce the presence like you know a king would have his horn dudes and all that so maybe he hit a herald maybe we should put a harold here and then stan lee’s like who’s this and then you know boom silver surfer happens and that was stan lee’s favorite character it was just thought of by jack kirby by himself here’s the thing i i still stay i still say to this day the design of dr jim is probably the most unique design i’ve seen in if i’ve seen in my entire life i didn’t think he i don’t know how he came up with that but it was just amazing it was unique you it was unique amazing it was tough it was well taught off and like i say i will keep on praising this man until i died and you know that kirby you know even before the the marvel universe in the silver age you know he was working during you know the 30s and 40s you know timely comics you know he co-created captain america with um jose and joe simon simon yeah that’s right that’s not you know your [ __ ] but uh he created captain america comics and you know that infamous cover of him punching out um hitler yeah it’s a legendary cover you know iconic piece of work so yeah uh i’m just grateful i’m just grateful for his work i think one of his best stories for me is just his fault for uh the fourth world with dark side mr america hi father yeah that i i really enjoyed the fourth world you know in terms of the scope and tale that are told like orion you know and and all those characters mr miracle i enjoyed uh kirby’s miss america you know and i like the complexity of that character you know but funny enough i never read that that title i’m still looking for it till this day but i can’t find it i mean i saw a lot of them at the con this past week if you’ve seen uh what i posted today on instagram i i i took some pictures they had a lot of kirby uh mr miracle there uh some of these things i can’t find it for some reasons i can’t find it but if i look uh but if i look uh if i look hard enough i’m sure i can i’m not really a massive fan of old art styles but i’m making an effort to get i’m making an effort to get the fourth world and uh mr miracle i’ll try to do that yeah that fourth world stuff was really good and then yeah i love how the fourth world now is who’s the most powerful villain in dc well most people would say darkseid jack kirby man and it’s funny how he made his first appearance in the jimmy olsen title you know when he was writing jimmy olsen uh that was the cameo it’s actually forever people won that’s the first but for some reason everyone goes after the jimmy olsen i think it’s because it’s a neil adams cover yeah but yeah you can’t oh by um the etrig and the demon that’s perfect as well yeah it is he did a lot of that stuff and you know that in the 70s like you know the the rhyme of etrigan i still have it till this day i think i learned it like a couple years ago and i still memorize it and it’s really like i uh i’m a big sucker for pa i really like rhymes where they say especially in fictions like i say uh not deviating but scott snyder’s code of val’s rhyme is one of my best ones atrigan is just amazing and i really like it when uh i mean writers do type uh do those type of things because it brings something unique and you don’t see it a lot of times yeah i like that you’re good too you marvel or dc you can’t escape jack kirby anymore not at all not at all well or actually you can’t escape him you never could because i mean if you look at any comic someone it’s either a character he helped create or it’s something that’s based or influenced by him like his work yeah i mean you can do that with stan lee you can look at something that wasn’t influenced by him at all and you can look at a lot of stuff especially dc that doesn’t have anything to do with him but you can’t do that with jack kerr yep kirk kirby’s fourth world pretty much changed the dc universe because when you really look at it was his own entity when he started it out and then they were supposed to remain yeah then you know dc saw that you know kirby and you know you got dark side so they they interjected into the dc universe so they could use those just like marvel did and took his creation away so yeah and and that’s another thing with jack is that he always got screwed over by marvel dc you know and you know he he in the 80s i think he went like more underground and started doing underground projects but and that’s why you know you mentioned neil adams earlier he was so uh aggressive and trying to get the rights for creators you know to say they need to be acknowledged as the creators of these characters you know because that kirby got messed over and like yeah he got he really got messed up yeah both companies and there was no image at the time or any place where he could go but by time that came around though they did talk to him and i heard jim valentino i think say that todd mcfarland wanted to have you know how almost all the books from back in the day had stan lee presents he wanted to have jack kirby presents at the beginning of all the image books but then they decided not to do that but they did get their the blessing of jack kirby for image being started when they told them what they were trying to do yeah and he did have a book for image called phantom force which i have yeah you know and they all and uh he did something with rob liefeld of all people i i used to have a copy now i don’t but yeah he he did the cover and you can tell it’s jack kirby he has that you can spot a kirby really easy you look at the faces or you look at you look at their hands and that’s how i tell and kirby a lot of his covers are iconic covers like dope though those silver age books that he did back in the in the 60s were a lot of those covers just fantastically drawn you know you got your odd ones here there but of course the one of my favorite covers is ff49 and then 52 you know with black panther that’s still one of my grills to obtain but uh i don’t know if i’d say it’s one of the covers that stands out to me it is a grail it’s a great book i i love the cover though but 49 though that’s the unstoppable monster man yeah 49 is great i love 52 personally of course cap uh what issue is it it’s it’s not 100 but i think it’s like within the first 10 issues where he’s bursting through the newspaper yeah i think it’s i think it’s 109 but that that’s a great cover i believe that’s kirby then what was the the avengers cover with dr doom is standing in front of him that’s a kirby cover and i love that one too don’t know no but i i i love that cover as well and then there was a daredevil one with daredevil fight captain america yeah that i and another thing with kirby is that he’s so unique with his his uh position of the characters that you think captain america looks bigger than daredevil on that cover but yet it’s just that because captain america is closest to the to the viewpoint captain america looks larger than daredevil because from that standpoint well i mean the perfect example of kirby right this is kirby yep and that that’s just he’s front and center with the bad guy everyone’s going around him but all your vision goes right back to diablo yeah it’s really really good it’s solid i like it yeah for for each time the art was really good that’s what i’m gonna say before i talk too much i should just shut up sometimes then you have the journey into mystery 83 with thor on the cover that’s another great one the the thor covers he did was great as well i wish i had something but i do have the first appearance of the wrecker and i always liked that cover because the record is standing over top of thor holding his uh crowbar crowbar like he’s about to crush through his head but it’s just such a visual cover you know and jack kirby knew how to deliver that those type of covers you know throw down covers and then of course he’s iconic kirby crackle you know like he just knew how to put that in there and make it people copy the kirby crap x-men 50 starenko copied that kirby crackle oh man i must have got you geek i’ll go ahead and send you a link the more the merrier that’s all i’m gonna say well he probably has a lot more curvy examples to show than i do but yeah man i just i just went to a shop earlier and uh i was looking through and i don’t have any other kirby stuff although kirby did do the inking in this particular book so kirby was also he could also just ink for people in the late 60s and all you know he’s inked and then joe cena would ink for him he ain’t for some other guys like colin i think uh gene colen i think yeah so yeah he not only did the pencils but he could ink oh uh jimmy care sean he’s not home oh damn i just sent it but yeah um kirby was definitely influential in pretty much the entire marvel universe oh yeah and i mean i think he basically created one quarter of all the characters that was that’s in it right now so yeah and and like i said when i when he went to dc and created his own stuff there dc decided you know after kirby left like let’s just interject it into the to universe so we could have darkseid versus superman because darkseid was never a superman villain until he came to universe dc universe and then you know now people look at dark sides of superman villain well i hate how they they screwed over jack but i love how the fourth world stuff is now in with dc because superman needs something other than lex luthor a shiny glowing rock so darkseid is a great foil because he’s like a a multiversal kind of threat you know he’s someone that actually could put superman and shake his boots you know and and he’s somebody that’s actual a world threat to earth you know because he wants to conquer it he wants to take it over and you need that that’s where superman would know some of his villains be lacking but whenever dark side pops up you know it’s about to get real you know it’s going to be a throw down because darkseid is that that that god-like character and and in the superman animated series the the police guy was modeled after jack kirby yeah and then he got killed by darkseid and when they did the grave service they drew in like stan lee and steve ditko and some other guys in the crowd yeah it took me years to notice that but i knew stan lee when i saw him but that that was a pretty creative way to do it not like the that homage that they played so i i think that uh that says how influential hey what’s up jeff it says how influential he is and it also says it’s an example of how dc kind of screwed him with it with his stuff because darkseid killed the jack herbert character yeah that like i said marvel and dc they they do all these these things to celebrate jack kirby but they were the ones that you know drove him away you know yeah but you know kirby is great when uh when frisetta even references him too yeah but i think marvel and dc for all their faults i think they’re much better with things like that now but back in the day they could be pretty ruthless yeah they still are uh yeah i mean it’s great that they if they’re finally acknowledging some creators yeah they have to act now especially like talk about batman and bob kane taking all the credit that’s a little different that’s a whole different situation i know that’s a whole different monster but still you know somebody else screwing over another person is basically what it was back then it was just a ruthless business you know whether it’s one person or whether it’s the company i will state i will say this till this day till this day dc screwing over alan moore is probably was really really bad i’m just going to say it especially with the watchmen uh with the watchman uh everything that happened with the watchman making his reports even though he didn’t want it yeah because it was supposed to be his own thing but dc kept making new printings of the trade payback so they can keep the rights well i mean that’s a shady deal but that’s also alan moore that’s a big take care of himself and read the fine print like he he should have known hey i need to change this or they’re just going to keep printing and make money yeah he was the victim of his own success that’s the thing yeah all right so some some of that’s his own fault but yeah dc kind of screwed him a little bit there and that’s what that’s an example of i love how the fourth world is interjected into the main universe but i don’t like the idea of watchmen doing the same thing i was just about to say walkman is this other thing i was just about to say that i mean geek when you look at it i’m just going to say this um the watchman movie was not that good that’s what i mean my own opinion it wasn’t that good dc i don’t think they screwed alamo so much as they did what they were allowed to in the contract that he signed and that’s kind of on him to read that i mean yeah that that makes sense but okay he didn’t actually destroy his parts because he could gain millions of dollars from this but he really doesn’t want to yeah that’s his own choice he he doesn’t want money from the stuff he doesn’t yeah he doesn’t want one views this time i think the main issue with him is just he doesn’t like the business of comic book companies so that’s why he never accepts anything from them anymore he don’t want his name on the movies that they do of his work so he’s still he still does comics though he said he wouldn’t would never do comics anymore after after that does stuff with uh dc anyways so well no i i think what uh ended him on comments was uh the league no that was sean connery that ended with yeah and ended his movie career gentlemen i don’t know what that is i’m sorry it’s an allen the league of extraordinary gentlemen oh so jeff you know you want to give your thoughts on jack kirby on his birthday jack i mean jack kirby is a you know what i mean he he like you guys said earlier he created a lot of universes you know what i mean like new gods for uh every you know what i mean anything that has to do with pretty much marvel you know he created anything that has to do with god type stuff in dc he created pretty much you know what i mean so and then yeah you know he’s great when rosetta even you know references him like saying you know he’s one he’s one of the great ones you know what i mean so that’s mostly what i got to say i mean he’s a he’s a great you know great art i mean like will was saying he’s not the greatest artist but he could actually write too didn’t he didn’t he write stuff too yeah he wrote a lot yeah he wrote he wrote and drew not not a lot of not a lot of artists can say they can you know do stories and and draw a whole comic at the same time not a lot of them can so one series that i never read and i i did read the reprint of it but i never read the whole thing of it was commanding a lot of the older comic book youtube guys when i first started watching youtube they loved that book that was like one of their many uh favorite kirby books and you know it it’s just how kirby can just take any concept and make it his own and you know the commanding series tells a lot of people you know who read that growing up and and they revere that series as well nope not today yeah jack kirby was just he’s a legend in the business and okay so i’m gonna i’m gonna ask a simple questions and you guys don’t think a lot about this just answer top three favorite word from jack garvey top three favorite what favorite word from jack favorite work give it work yeah it could be anything for marvel ff hulk and uh i would say avengers minor new new gods from him and uh mr well miss america counts this new god anyway so yeah new gods uh hey silver suffer was it about him or no yeah yeah silver surfer uh i’m not clearing all the stuff with ff so yeah yeah so there he is what’s up geek what’s going on hey you guys hear me legs yep yeah i got them legs where did you get it yeah yeah i love this cover that’s what everyone wants that’s what everybody gets yeah but no but steve gave this one to me anyways steve aok to me this one nice that’s nice but slapped her rob slab but looking at it uh looking at it you can probably press it and it’ll be a nine eight president cleaning it’d be a nine eight no it doesn’t look like it’s complicated i got two cards yeah very good i got a greatest two rock copies and neither one of them is going to make nine eight well this one doesn’t have no one yeah yeah that’s the main reason i brought it up that’s the whole reason i brought it see i’m talking to thanatos on on on thursday and his daughter accidentally knocked his copy off of the uh off of the shelf broke broke the holder he sent it in to have it reholded that like it’s no longer a nine eight and he’s like no [Music] and then all you see is the tj in the hood in the chat going i’ll find you at night the whole time crazy my uh my top three kirby stories i know that’s cheating you had time to think about it you were silent oh you know i didn’t say it but you know i know new gods is one of them the fourth world stuff you know extra getting the demon i always enjoyed that character and i forgot about it i thought i didn’t know he had that dragon and of course fantastic four that’s fair that’s fine i’ll give you that now gig i would ask you since we are on the subject of jack kirby your top three forever work top three favorite works from kirby yes um i would definitely put the fourth world in there as a whole right because it’s kind of its own you know masterpiece not just on an individual title basis the the initial galactus slash silver surfer origin even though that’s not kirby it’s but besema so i would i would say i would say yeah the galactus silver surfer you know tr uh what do you call that trilogy yeah um but just overall i mean yeah i would say the hulk would probably be the top in my opinion that works so if it’s okay that works expect that yeah dog got ff avengers and new gods i said the fourth world like you said it’s just it’s at the time when he was doing it was his its own universe and then income cancellated a lot of um characters and and stories you know like that mr miracle and forever people it was just amazing i don’t know if he was classified as the king before he went to uh dc but he certainly owned that once he did i mean being able to write and draw the majority of the fourth world titles commandy and demon you know that was impressive okay so as much as i would like to stay i actually have to go it was a pleasure talking to all of you thanks for stopping thanks for coming bye thanks for coming on i will be back soon that’s for sure awesome cool okay all right the rest of your show i know it won’t be as it would be better than without them with me but i said self-deprecation the hallmark of the comic community i mean there’s no other way okay so uh have a great weekend guys thank you man yeah but yeah noah he was even in the 60s called the king it was jack the king kirby and stan the man lee i think it was dan that gave him the name the king makes sense well stan was a teenager when he was working under jack and joe right at timely yeah yeah he was 17 or 18. he was wasn’t he already in the service when he was writing for captain america comics i think when he was writing but uh i think he started it like 12 13 14 yeah when he took off when he took over for for for that it was and then he went to that 16 17 years old something like that yeah but yeah jack was always been older than stan by that’s if he’s 104 today stan died at like 95 so i i think he’s like four years five years young older than stan what’s up barn what’s up guys did you go to a show today uh tomorrow i’m down in fort myers right now oh okay fort myers has a show tomorrow southwest florida con oh it’s tomorrow okay yeah i thought it was today i just finished work and i’m headed over to a comic store on my way home that’s cool but you know um i felt like when jack went to dc that’s when he was able to flex his muscles real strong with the stuff that he created there and and the fourth world universe was like his brain child and he was able to just do all those titles and tell all those stories with with his own accord you know and though he ain’t had to worry about nobody really messing with him you know like they did when he did the superman and they redid superman’s face because they didn’t like jack kirby’s face on superman he did superman once i didn’t know that yeah i remember that story though i forgot the artist who redid the superman face but but i know they they didn’t like how he drew superman so they had somebody beat through the face but when he did the fourth world stuff that was his own artwork nobody messed with him because it was his own work and he was able to really show his muscles when it came to just drawing a story and writing a story at the same time and telling multiple tales with all these characters i think it was kurt swan puff i think they had kurt swann come in and redo superman that kirby uh he he would be the choice so brian your your thoughts on jack kirby you know because we’re talking about jack kirby yeah um well i mean i don’t collect too much of king kirby believe it or not i think black panther from the bronze age might be the only major thing um i respect so much of course of the content and the contributions and the work i mean you know the the catalog of the pedigree speaks for itself uh everything that him and stan created i i just talked about it this week to my kids in high school that you know just i i told them said just stop and think for a moment everything that you’re consuming on disney plus and in the theaters in a lot of modern day comics i mean it came from two guys from two guys just the characters it goes and goes forever um and then i caught what if uh second episode yesterday i’m still an episode behind uh you know with uh black panther being star lord if anyone’s seen that latest thing and of course that’s our last you know chance to you know enjoy chadwick boseman um and it dawned on me that my gosh bozeman passed away on kirby’s birthday yeah i forgot about that and then you just hit me after i finished watching that and uh it’s a great episode there’s a few people that are dogging it on the internet i don’t know what they’re talking about it is a what if of course and so let that be i mean it’s not changing anything it’s a what if and i thought it was great um and i didn’t really plan to kind of tear up at the end it really didn’t that it didn’t hit me until the end that that was the end yeah and then uh sherry or somebody got hurt on on set as it sounds like i did see that i’m not sure the extent of the injury um but i didn’t read that yeah sounded like uh one of them got hurt oh somebody got hurt yeah but yeah that that episode was really good in the tearjerker at the end and like like when you said about bozeman dying the day of jack kirby’s birthday i even last year i was so like the straw over his past and that i forgot that it was jack kirby’s yeah i did too and you know segwaying into chat with bozeman and and what he meant for not only just the black panther but you know people in general you know i’ll enjoy men for not only movies but the life values that he gave and his speeches and inspiring people man i was like that that his death really took me but at the same time he really left a mark in his short career as an actor and stuff because he really made a lot of people feel more important than they already than they think they were you know because he inspired a lot of people and i think the more we go back and enjoy some of his performances i mean that’s that’s only gonna you know set itself in stone the contributions he made and of course both on and off the screen it’s a it’s such a tragic loss at such a young age well the man was a chameleon he he is jackie robinson he is james brown he is t’challa i mean he’s the third marshal you know i mean the man has so many and him playing james brown is one of my favorites like yeah i love that movie because he really portrayed james brown to the t like he took that that that role seriously and and and he nailed it even though i thought he was a bit taller than james brown but the way he portrayed them was just phenomenal it’s one of my favorite movies and performances yeah that’s steve’s favorite too man steve always talks about that one but we bring up bozeman so what was his job um thoughts on bozeman remembering him you know your favorite movie role of his you know and and how you felt the day that he passed since you know it’s been one year heartbreaking it was a yeah it was the chest it was a little yeah it was a little weird i mean you know what i mean he passed i didn’t nobody knew he had cancer man like nobody like and not even the public man noah like only his close family knew man like nobody knew i mean the fact that he had it for four years and was able to still do movies was yeah astounding yeah i mean and i imagine he he had it when he was doing black panther that gives me more respect for the informed than anything he was doing all those all those stunts still with treatment you know what i mean so yeah i can’t imagine you know having to do those movies and then get treated at the same time yeah i’ve dude i’ve seen my mom go through it so i know so it’s just not a testament to his strength of character yeah you know i mean to to keep his personal life personal i mean so many people just put everything out there and they and i know we’re we’re an internet you know crazy public i know we want to know everything about you know the the people that we admire and the people we follow and you know i i get all that um but you know we never had that level of you know information or intimacy with people growing up we didn’t know all their yeah when we were kids we didn’t we didn’t have that now the kids now man it’s like they want to know everything yeah because they’re used to people giving them everything just think how much we give people that we don’t even know you know we give everybody so much stuff um and for him to keep that you know play that close to home and just keep that inside and not you know draw anybody else into it again just shows a class act uh i mean all the way from start to finish and it is just so sad that we lost him he was always humble and and generous and kind to everybody that that talked to him and that’s just made him such a likable person you know that you hated to see that such a great man like like him gone you know considering that what we saw of his acting ability what we saw for what he does for the people in terms of his charities and stuff and and what we could have seen down the line know in terms of his movie roles his stuff that he’s a very good fighter what he would have accomplished afterwards yeah because you know the sky was the limit for him and yeah he could have won he did he would did he ever win an oscar before he i don’t think so right no not to my knowledge jackie robinson i believe was he nominated for that one thing was it owen or maybe it’s a golden globe i’d have to go back and look yeah i think he i think it was only a golden globe that he wanted i don’t think he you got a husker but you know imagine if he was still here he would probably be oscar-bound now you know i mean all the movies he would have picked i i i was saying maybe he he could have got one for his last performance in my reigns black bottom because yeah he played the hell out of that role even if i was upset at him at the end of the movie and the silence it looks like he is finally having some internet trouble so he’ll be joining back as soon as he can yeah everybody’s been having it i i’ve been having it all week at the house me too yeah you know i don’t feel yeah and then and then a couple of yeah then my sister worked from home so it’s even worse so she’s calling bitching at the company going what the hell’s going on all week well down here before it admires i guess i’ll kind of just shift the gear towards comics a little bit it’s hard to believe there’s really only one comic shop down there there’s only one there’s only one not down there yeah there’s a hero trader which i went to today and shot video put together later uh pretty nice shop i i’ve been there before i was down here at the same con in 2017 when i met jackson boswick the original shazam from the 70s so um and the con is in the hotel i’m staying at so just right downstairs and go to the con so i’m pumped up about that um but i’ve been to heroes trader before because he’s been there this is his fifth year or sixth year there in that location but he’s done a lot of retail before and i’ve talked to that uh the guy before that owns the place um but the other shops didn’t make it through the pandemic there were there were two others um the only other one i recall they weren’t very good yeah the and the other one uh that is here is more games than comics so i stopped by there and i didn’t even shoot any video they had just a few boxes of comics a handful of new books and everything else was all gaming so even though comics is in their title um they have very few comments well next time geek comes to florida i should be i should be okay finally i hope so yeah mr aficionado where are you off to today can see your mobile yeah one second you gotta get this to work a little bit better now that’s not working at all um i am i was working and now i am headed over to a place called keith’s comics in schaumburg illinois okay he’s got a couple of books on hold for me so i’m gonna pick those up very nice i got steve something yeah skeletor t-shirt shirt yeah nice yeah well let’s hope you wear short sleeves i found a bunch more stuff i found another whole boxer i found a whole nother box of conan’s from bb so uh i’ve got those and i got a so i gotta send the backpack steve’s background yeah and i got and i got a i got one of his grails off his list too so so i gotta give it to steven uh yeah so i gotta say and i gotta go see steve and hand it off so he can send it off with everything else that he has to send off to bb yeah yeah so i’ll get i gotta get this box out monday because uh this week is gonna be a busy one for me any new books for you this week uh gents anybody pick anything up yeah i did i picked uh really comics i picked the whole stack up yeah i think jeff buys enough for all of us yeah pretty much and i get a pretty decent discount that’s the only reason i do so yeah and then uh oh i picked i do as well but i just don’t have time to read them yeah me either sometimes i’m like oh man i pick up too much these are uh sarah rosetta covers that she did for a kickstarter so i got the virgin [Music] oh yeah and she did uh she did the commission too oh i gotta show you guys together no it is it is a uh indie comic that is uh talking about a dog and a rooster egyptian queen yeah and then she did the commission too follow me and then she took a picture of it she said she’s almost done she needs to do a couple other things well nice uh will is that a gym of paro aquaman dr strange a couple of bronze age all-star squadrons and then um i got those uh ammo gam comics when dc and marvel teamed up i found the uh the doctor strange doctor fate uh thing and then there’s another strange agent of shield so i grabbed those all in dollar well that’s where they should be but they’re cool books i mean i don’t i don’t see them that much and they were they were in uh you know nice shape so i grabbed them yeah it’s a good experiment you know to mash up those characters you know because i had the green lantern you know the iron lantern mashup i have had that i think it was the only one i actually bought when they were on the shelf um it was just interesting to you know catch that match up of uh their [ __ ] universe characters you ever accidentally buy a key accidentally bite you yeah i’ve i bought this for the cover but it’s a key but apparently it’s also a key it’s the first cosmic cube i didn’t realize that i just knew submariners were becoming it’s a pretty good looking book so i got it for the cover turns out it’s a key so hey i thought you were gonna say there’s a lot of like small keys and those uh anthology runs yeah obviously some of the bronze age stuff i bought you know as a kid you know when i started collecting teen titans obviously you know new teen titans number two with deathstroke you know had that ever since you know it was on the shelf some of the green lantern green arrow stuff you know first well second guy gardener you know stuff like that so you know there’s those are my accidental keys i guess i’m just buying them off the spinner rack you know and then now today they’re keys the second guy gardeners second guy gardner is the first john tourer so yeah yeah and then that is killing me man no you’re you’re not the only one man oh i’ve been having issues all week you’ve been messing with me since this morning was trust me man i i’ve been having it all week man like almost monday all the way to the today was i was having issues that’s why i was there i was hoping i wouldn’t have nothing getting on with you guys well fellas i hate to stay on for such a small amount of time so how high do you think that uh i gotta get out here we’ll see y’all all right well see you later and i think geek froze i think yeah he’s getting ready to say something yeah that’s that’s the life of traveling and live streaming at the same time yeah i’m just about to say something international yeah there’s a little bit of delay on my end so i start talking and will start talking and he’s got precedent so by the time it gets to you guys uh no i was gonna say how how do you guys think that amazing spider-man annual one’s gonna hit now that there’s been a trailer out yeah it’s gonna it’s gonna it’s gonna be already on you know they don’t stay there yeah the older books do the older ones do yeah the ones that have had steady games over the years they stay put but something like really didn’t get like steve’s first first book on his damn girl list is expensive as hell ff what was that that’s never gonna drop though yeah i know even even with those silly fantastic four movies that book never felt yeah it’s that before man i think what was it doctor doom first doctor doom is it four or five i forgot i think it’s fine five five yeah that board is awesome turns out to be the big bad in uh the black panther sequel that book’s gonna see new heights yeah because steve already dropped yeah steve’s already been wanting that damn book for forever man if it is if he is the big bad i feel bad right now i think they’re leaning anti-hero with neymar but um but if doom shows up in any way shape or form even if it’s in the trailer say bye-bye to the price of that book look at voter that review would be like yeah doom is coming yeah actually i think they did that in captain american winter soldier didn’t they internet have an issue again you know you might be right that i don’t this was it winter soldier was it age of ultron whenever they came to take quick silver and uh scarlet witch i feel like it might have got dropped there well that was sakovia right i don’t remember if they said let very or not right when they were attacking i i don’t know i i think you’re right i feel like i’ve heard him at some point but uh one hand uh he had the agent [Music] [Music] there’s uh one of the marvel t-shirt variants that i’m missing i think it’s the thor one i still gotta find the uh thing and no it’s the thor and thing that i don’t have i think this one’s the whole one that i need okay you guys remember those from the marvel legacy variant run they had done uh they’ve done the jack kirby t-shirt covers so it was it was the same art that they used on the t-shirts back in uh in the 60s and 70s you can still find the ad actually in the books if you look for them oh okay so this is this is before the disney acquisition no marvel legacy okay one minute the t-shirt uh the t-shirts oh god yes wait like i said back in the 60s and 70s so if you look at some of the you look at some of those books you go through the pages there’s interior ads either near the back or in the middle that show these t-shirts off and they did a selection across um all the titles out at the time that they were doing the the marvel legacy stuff where they went back to the legacy numbering and all that and uh they released these variants they’re like 1 10 1 and 25 things like that you know it just depended on the on the the print run of this this series uh so there’s uh was it marvel two and one uh when the thing and human torch came back and they were looking for reed and sue oh yeah get the band back together yeah so there’s one it’s uh it’s got uh the thing you’re like walking away and it says things back pun intended yeah and then there’s the only was this there was an iron man one an x-men one uh dr strange um hulk uh daredevil yes i got most of the rest of them i just there’s three left for me to get and one i’m picking up here and two more i gotta track down they’re cool variants uh jeff you decided if you’re going to daytona beach comic con in september yeah yeah and work on me and steve we’re going to daytona because of tom tom’s going so but let me know if you need anything from tom i’ll email them books that you need and he’ll hold them to the side if you need it yeah if you want yeah i’ll do that i’ll do that yeah let me know and then uh a lot of his tom books are in good shape all the time so yeah who’s tom tom’s the tom and uh he runs pop culture what is it pop culture uh popco it’s it’s one of the little booths yeah that that uh in cons and stuff but he used to do megacon but table costs way too much to do he said he’s always worried about making the money back to the pay-to-table law so he doesn’t do mega he’s the guy that you guys were saying and he’s got everything he got anything and everything and like man like all the vampires my whole run i probably picked up from him like at least half of the the warm run i picked up from him at least really yeah i got a bunch i still gotta get from there yeah but uh it’s a question for you um oh okay eat more city i keep hitting those guys up on instagram about uh the the torches and uh the 74th run that we talked about and nobody answers me oh do i need to just call them up on the phone or no no normally they’ll hit you back up pretty quick but i don’t understand why they didn’t oh david just just said hey hey like say hey dave in the message he’ll might answer y’all might answer better or or something you know what i mean which one of those instagram accounts dave is attached to because like i messaged him one time i think like on the dollar comics forget the guy’s name hey puff is it is it cedric or is it i forgot i forget the dave’s partner in ebay yeah i know you talking about um i sometimes matches him as well um i’ll put this um page on on private chat but yeah dave when when you look up evil on dave david his name is under you got the three e-board pages that the dollar the five and the ten dollar one and then you got like evo’s main page which is run by david with that has his name on it right all right i’ll check that because i’ve hit him twice and they responded back yeah the other person yeah i’ll send you the other person so you can get in contact with as well i mean it’s going to be good stories dude but the funny thing is they they don’t really operate a store they don’t really yeah it’s just it’s just uh it’s just a place to hold their comics pretty much yeah and it’s a hit and a miss you know like there’s even hours like it’s weird like if you pull them up just on google there’s hours for the store that they don’t even keep at all a lot a lot of times steve hits him up and he’ll say oh yeah i’m over here right now if you want to come by or yeah that’s all that’s the only way to get get over there yeah i’m only about 45 minutes from him so if i’m thinking about going i’ll i’ll text him or hit him up on instagram or something he’s like yeah we’re here come by yeah yeah told me yeah i’ll put the page of um in the private chat maybe you can contact him and talk to him about it yeah talk to him both i also send you his link uh uh jimmy on on instagram all right cool yeah send it to me on instagram yeah come back and see it later yeah but i’m going to daytona but look if that fort myers one is tomorrow i i might just hit it up tomorrow i might just drive up there it’s a nice drive you know once you get past all the you know 275 bs you’re coming from yeah get on 75 it only took me a little over an hour to get here okay so yeah i’m thinking about it uh let’s see uh let’s see if steve’s up for it and i’ll drive i don’t care i’ll i’ll pick him up i said we’re going here most of the celebrities have canceled for tomorrow even though they’re still advertising them on the page um i i think uh trini roberts is the only person that i know of as a somewhat of a name that is still uh gonna be here she drew a little bit of wonder woman in the 80s i’m sure magic lasso would be geeking out over that um but that’s only you know freak no cancel jerry conway cancelled uh even coco beware cancelled i mean you know no not the birdman sports those were the three big names believe it or not ferrigno conway and uh coco beware well for real i kind of figured i would supposed to be here so so four but that’s it naka wow so but still i’m hoping it’s good vendor there have been live wrestling here tomorrow so that would be cool there’s an independent wrestling company comics and wrestling intersect i don’t get that i don’t either but hey man the hunt was yesterday man i know i understand that one but i get yeah i get biggie and tony and kenny and those guys but like i don’t get in general why like at a comic convention there’s wrestling i know super con maybe i mean used to have the outfits like they used to have the side wrestling promotion that was there for like a few years you know where cosplayers step in the ring and wrestle i’m like yeah the crazy side you know to that is that like the one of the guys that i went to high school with it was like really into comics especially like justice society everything actually became a wrestler yeah i don’t worry but like we were going to high school i know i got high school he was not like a wrestler you know believe it or not a lot of wrestlers like current wrestlers do love comics you know like a big geek yeah they they read cm punk is one of them and he just returned he loved he he even written comics yeah i remember when he written what the thor story the short story and the thor annual yeah in in the the drax series oh yeah he wrote the whole drag series didn’t he you know yeah everybody knows i’m going to see him punk nobody knows him well easier today and they talked wrestling so you know also a lot of us comic collectors are huge wrestling fans like i said we we we talked wrestling we talked comments we talked about things yeah we grew up yeah we grew up in the 80s man we grew up on wrestling and comics and comics cartoons freaking ultimate warrior had his own comic yeah wcw had comments with uh what was that marvel yeah and there’s an episode of comic book man when uh christopher daniels and frank anderson show and they market their book to you know those guys and they bought like i don’t know 50 or 100 copies from them just to sell them the store you know so they were drawing something yeah and then uh you guys see that show heels the fact that he actually wrestled that summerslam event oh yeah yeah yeah cody rhodes yeah baby it’s it’s it’s a win but it’s a fun combination comics and wrestling right and then cody was on green arrow i mean like so a lot there’s a good amount of wrestlers that love comics you know they used to bring it to the locker room and stuff and you know talk about comics and stuff from what i heard with christopher daniels and stuff and small joel some guys talking about comments and then they go on the ring and beat each other up roman reigns they call it the superman punch yeah you know so you’re see you’re here and i mean that’s like free advertisement for the man of steel every friday night yeah yep too funny yeah there’s a lot of them seriously yeah there’s a lot of there’s a lot of wrestlers that are fans what was that jimmy dude just comes across two lanes cut me off into the turn that’s that’s not the new man that’s that’s floor florida that’s florida for you too that’s every day from florida don’t get me started that’s florida man that is the scariest driving i have ever seen and i spent time in vegas that’s all out of state man a lot of them were out of state people i stayed a lot out of country people yeah even even the big lion cat talked about florida’s driving i was like yeah that’s that’s florida yeah that’s yeah sometimes i i hate driving i’d rather go back to new york and deal with [ __ ] subways and stuff yeah right oh yeah yeah uh sarah sarah took a picture of the commission she’s doing for me oh look at that yeah she’s not done yet but she’s almost yeah and she wanted to do it in her own style i said go right ahead i like it yeah that was nice yeah you made a great point i think jeff and one of the other you know shows we were talking about that you know getting these early works of hers is she’s just establishing herself yeah i know you’re talking about the red sonja book that you know you got and now it’s it’s like what two three hundred dollars on ebay and stuff yeah um you’re really gonna have some valuable stuff you know both sentimentally and monetarily you know with her collection yeah because honestly i like i was i was messing around and i was looking on online to see what you know what the book was what this what this one like this one but puff picked up the other one picked picked up the one from uh megacon right yeah that’s a beautiful book man yeah you picked up the one from megacon the one from mega cotton is more expensive than this one i went i went looking which one was like the one uh the red sonja the red zone with the dragon on it what the [ __ ] is the one that she did with um clayton crane yeah the crane did the monster but she did the the woman you can tell she did the the lady you can tell she did red sonja we blow you up for a minute yeah yeah you can tell she did the red sonja and then uh yeah the monster yeah hopefully y’all get a chance to meet us yeah you will and jeff you got that one up at yancey street right yep i got it up at yancy street because that mega uh when she i messaged her if she was going to go to megacon i was going to play i was going to have like a puff or one of them pick up the commission she goes uh uh you know i’m not going or because uh and then that they like a couple days before she said she had got covered from her sister so she wouldn’t be able to go yeah yeah yeah and people were saying oh yeah we saw her there oh no no man you guys are lying she wasn’t there well believe it or not because um i there was with puff and i when he was getting uh jason’s book signed by clayton greene there was a lady there that i think was either it may have been his wife i’m not sure no quick little look and if you don’t know what frisetta looks like you might have thought that was her because she was in that booth advertising that booth with with with clayton yeah yeah it was people were saying they saw her they might have been seeing his wife and assistant it’s not the assistant it’s it’s uh the person that runs a black flag comics it’s april or whatever her name is okay yeah yeah i know the one you’re talking about because yeah if you take a quick glance at her she looks like sarah a little yeah if you take a quick look especially you never met her you just have a idea in your mind like oh yeah you know yeah because i’m going to lean to the store and do some business so i will catch you guys in a bit all right see you in a little bit all right jess see you later yeah yeah you know the other cool thing about fort myers down here that i didn’t know is pgx is down here oh i don’t know comics is down here oh yeah yeah yeah i forgot about that yeah they’re both down there so when i was just searching comic book shops around me and stuff and oh you should go to scout scout has a little business uh business front oh so you didn’t seem to me i couldn’t tell if if you could actually walk in there or not yeah yeah yeah i forgot about that yeah but i uh yeah you should be able to i think that or either they’re moving locations right now or either it’s still open i forget yeah well maybe when i’m done here maybe i’ll punch it in and see because i didn’t see any hours on the oh okay i think they were listed there i mean i don’t know i could dig a little deeper and see what i mean yeah because supposedly yeah supposedly they’re they’re supposed to be the they’re supposed to be a storefront for scout okay over there remember did you get down to four miles today right yeah i got here today so did you hit any shops yeah i went to a place uh you were kind of in and out i went to a place called hero trader that i’ve been to before he’s been here about five or six years uh really nice guy shot video there’ll be a you know do a piece on the channel in the next week or so uh with that um but i got a few my books are in my hard case i don’t have them right here um got a few all-star squadrons and some of those ammo game books i was telling jeff and those guys and will a little bit earlier on but the other there was a couple other shops they didn’t make it through the pandemic they were here in 2017 last time i was down here but they’ve since closed up and there’s another shop uh that is advertises comics but it’s probably 75 gaming and games and 20 comics so geez but next week i’m going to uh texas shops over there so i’m pretty excited going here there’s uh i don’t know what yeah i don’t know where you’re gonna be at but there’s a place called bedrock comics out there too okay and uh john neville said i need to go to a place called half price books so i’ve already got that mapped out yep yeah he mentioned half price books yesterday on our stream when we talked last dragon yeah yeah yeah i’m surprised you guys couldn’t get uh uh who was it uh that guy that wasn’t there yeah i couldn’t get him on he he was he’s gonna be busy so i couldn’t get him on surprise yeah i was hoping so but it was fun yesterday we me me and steve and hopefully you jeff you know we looking outside of just cons to just link up with john and have a day where we just go hunting that’s cool i’m down i’m down fine any day you know because i want to do it on a saturday probably around november i know i got a vacation after thanksgiving yeah november not the first not anytime as long as it’s not the first saturday of of uh uh first or second saturday of every month i’ll be okay yeah it’s the second saturday every month we have the work that’s at that one saturday every month so as long as it’s you know like a couple of studies but after or before i’ll be okay like maybe we can plan on that then sean that after thanksgiving one of those saturdays because i want to come up your way and hit epic and some of those shots that are up that way because what else do you have up there is kingdom comics up by you too oh um the store i’m i’m not sure i know i have um epic you got sci-fi city with jeff nozo right yeah yeah we got um the coliseum which is a new location on 50. okay it’s not over here it’s not in the the mall no more like me and jeff went there before it’s not in that mall this is a new location and then a comic shop i haven’t been to a comic shop in a while but you know the com a comic shop it had you know a bar there’s a bar in the back and you mean lots yeah monsters there there’s gods and monsters and there’s a comic shop a comic shop had they both have bars in the back okay yeah godzilla monsters is more on international drive i’ve been there before yeah because i did a video for that it hasn’t that’s another one i was telling jeff i’ve got so much content that’s good i mean that’s the whole that’s the whole reason i’m probably going to go through the end of october good well the comic stop i ain’t been there in a while i haven’t been there since i know before before they have um they used to not have back issues but i’ve heard recently that they added back issues so i’m just going there to see how the store look yeah with back issues it’s it’s small i remember the last time i isn’t it small man yeah it’s not that big like it’s just one like big owl yeah but you wouldn’t think it’d be holding enough to hold back issues because in the middle they got their trades and stuff and the walls are full of comi
