Eagles Camp Updates and Phillies lose again: The Sports Bash with Mike Gill August 26, 2021

you know 50 pitches and they were leaving him out there he wasn’t even at 100 pitches yet so let’s not go crazy about zach wheeler getting left in the game like he was out of gas he’s throwing 96 miles an hour that’s not out of gas he made a bad pitch he left the pitch up and it got delivered over the left field right field wall the phillies don’t have better options than zack wheeler they just simply don’t but what they do have better options is defensively rhys hoskins cannot play defense right now i don’t look i get it he’s out there he’s doing the best he can to try to help this team win and that’s admirable but those plays have to be made and if they are made this game is probably a different story the phillies needed that game last night and what rhys hoskins needed to do is tell his manager i’m not your best option today coach i am not your best option today i’m going to hurt the team if you need me as an at-bat later on in the game i’ll help you out but putting me in the field will hurt my team and rhys hoskins hurt the team last night the phillies were accredited with two errors not fair not fair to zach wheeler if you look at the box score last night the phillies got the lead they gave up a couple of runs in the fourth what happened in that one franco doubled to right and then the fielding error by mccutchen diaz single to right which was a ball that was blistered by hoskins hoskins has to knock the ball down that ball cannot get into the outfield absolutely can’t get into the outfield later on in the game what happens again when you take a look at the rays and how they scored their run you had another error situation that pop-up that goes into foul territory rhys hoskins i don’t care if he’s on one leg hopping for the ball he has to make that catch has to and because they couldn’t catch a flippin pop-up in foul territory which is an automatic out they are giving you the out you end up losing that game you end up losing that game because you can’t make high school routine plays at first base last night look i know it sounds like you’re just hammering hoskins he’s hurt he hasn’t played he’s got the strain left groin it’s going to be like this for a while he was out for 14 games but gerardi last night acknowledged that the groin injury is affecting hoskins in the field well then hoskins has to acknowledge it too and say coach i’m hurting the team he could have made a play on franco’s hard hit ball in the fourth that scored that ball was scored a double he stayed down after barely diving for diaz’s grounder in the whole later that inning that ball was just barely hit by him and then the eight he comes up with that you know the routine pop-up that he just i mean that was poorly played in the eighth you end up scoring a run in that inning because you can’t catch a pop-up five games out last night’s game microcosm right 609-403-0973 tech board already got some action on the tech support here mike it’s funny because the same people yelling at wheeler stayed in too long or the same yelling at rojas for taking walker out at the end of the day these coaches need to pump the brakes on this analytical bs watch and manage the game well i don’t think girardi left wheeler out too long i think the fact of the matter was the game shouldn’t have been in this situation they should not have given up the runs early in the game because of mccutchen’s error and they shouldn’t have given up the runs earlier in the game later in the game because of hoskins errors if you make a couple of routine plays the philly should have won that game 4-2 last night and wheeler did a great job he pitched his ass off in that game last night people acted like wheeler didn’t pitch well the guy had 10 strikeouts in the game he gave up three in the ninth he ends up giving five earned runs up that’s that ball that was hit at hoskins should not be rolled a hit but that being said he threw eight innings and ten strikeouts that’s a performance that i’ll take from zack wheeler all the time but i need the defense behind him to help him out 609-403-0973 download the free mobile app in the apple store google play write to your phone send us a message you know it’s just frustrating because look they scored four runs last night which is not enough again the offense is a problem in that game last night they had a couple of opportunities yet again with nine hits last night in the game but here’s a couple of factors gene segura has gone from what 315 to 288 it’s an unfortunate time for segura to start to hit the gene segura who he really is button jt arumuto has just been an average guy all season long he is not the best catcher in baseball right now he’s just another guy well the phillies are hitting him in a spot in their lineup that says he’s the best and that’s not accurate bryce harper had a couple of hits last night couple of rbis rhys hoskins i think hit the uh home run in the eighth inning last night that ties the game up great situation hoskins has been big with the bat recently but you could have brought him into pinch hit in that spot and did the same thing and not hurt the team offensively mccutchen had a couple of hits last night galvez did nothing terreas had a couple of hits last night luke williams bases loaded nobody out and williams look he hits a screamer at third it ends up being an rbi uh or he gets a run home it’s a fielder’s choice so no rbi but they got to do more they get a double play they trade the two outs for the run it felt like you needed more in that spot that’s the kind of game last night that you just look at and say man we the phillies we gave it everything we had and it just wasn’t enough yeah they’re better than you the rays are better than you that’s evident but it doesn’t help when the team is already better than you and you’re giving them extra outs in that situation you have no shot and the phillies had no shot because of it and now moving forward this is a series you know mike mcgarry will be on tomorrow’s show he writes a column on fridays called must win i’m not suggesting that we’re at the must win but if you don’t win this series three games to four three games to one excuse me three out of four you’re in trouble if you don’t win three out of four and quite frankly you almost say this should be a sweep because this team is so bad eflin’s gonna go tonight nola tomorrow gibson on saturday suarez on sunday wheeler monday against washington the phillies have five pictures that all five days that these guys take the mound you should feel pretty good you’re not rolling matt moore out there you’re not rolling chase anderson out there you’re for god’s sake not rolling vince velazquez out there these five starters f1 nola gibson suarez and wheeler they give you a shot to win every single day if your offense doesn’t pick it up this season by the time they face atlanta in that series on september 28th will be meaningless forget that september 17th that we were looking at before when they take on the mets the mets of essentially what was the word that mike tyson said faded into bolivia that’s where the mets are right now the mets are four games under 500 they’re out of this thing the phillies are now 500 baseball team yet again after losing that game to a to a certainly superior opponent last night but down the stretch they’re not playing superior opponents they have inferior matchups the rest of the way and it starts tonight it starts tonight inferior opponents start tonight and they need to take advantage of it if this team wants to make the playoffs if they want to get back to the postseason for the first time in 10 years they need at least three out of four and realistically over their next seven games they need they have arizona washington and miami so let’s go 10 games four arizona three washington and three miami they realistically need eight out of ten in these ten games if they get eight out of ten they’ll have a shot if not i think you can pretty much count them out and why do i say that well they got milwaukee coming up on the road they got some bad baseball teams colorado chicago the mets are average baltimore’s an awful baseball team pittsburgh’s an awful baseball team and then you play atlanta so sure there’s a chance to get some some wins there but it will not give your clubhouse any realization why should we be able to beat baltimore if we can’t beat arizona four three out of four what makes you think we can go beat baltimore two out of three why should you know pittsburgh is a four-game set in philly you have baltimore and pittsburgh a four game set in philly you have three against baltimore four against pittsburgh seven games coming up against two of the worst teams in all of baseball well the last time you played pittsburgh they beat you two out of three the inconsistencies is the issue and why are you inconsistent because there’s one thing that is consistent you know you’re not getting very good defense you know your offense isn’t getting the big hit since the all-star break in 37 games gene segura is hitting 230 a 374 slugging percentage on base percentage is 321 that’s pedestrian and that’s the problem a guy that you were counting on has now become a guy you can’t count on inconsistencies one thing that’s consistent is your defense has been terrible that can’t happen you cannot be give me a good baseball team that plays bad defense it’s the most over baseball defense is one of the most overlooked things no one ever says man you know when football that’s a good defense in basketball that’s a good defensive team nobody says in baseball that’s a good defensive team but baseball defense is one of the most overlooked things in all of sports nobody talks about baseball defense yet in my opinion pitching and defense go hand in hand if you don’t have one you don’t have the other you can’t have good pitching if you have lousy defense can’t happen bad defense makes good pitching mediocre you cannot win at any level of baseball unless you play defense think about it think about all the sports where there’s an offense and a defense people never talk about baseball defense never but realistically the best teams play the best defense the tampa bay rays make every play they are outstanding defensively they’re outstanding defensively and i know they haven’t won the world series but the only reason they’re in this thing with the talent or lack thereof that they have and let’s be honest it’s not a very talented yes they’re good why are they good they maximize every ounce of talent that they have joey wendell is not making any all-star game but man he makes every play at third base or second base or whatever position he plays on that particular day and nobody says well maybe he’s not hitting because he doesn’t know what position he’s playing in the field he plays every position and he plays it to the top level of his ability they play defense at an outrageous level the play that arose arena makes in left field i mean that diving catch it ends the inning for the phillies defense is what the phillies lack they fixed their rotation they have five guys in that rotation who are all pretty good they fixed their bullpen to some extent when was the last time their bullpen blew a game that they had the lead in i can’t remember it one that stands out to me i’m not saying it hasn’t happened but there’s not a standout one in the last couple of weeks they had 20 some blown saves the first half of the year that has been fixed but what hasn’t been fixed is this is a flipping bad bad defensive team i’m mike gill this is the sports bash live 973 espn download the free mobile app in the apple store or google play and you can message us through your phone it’s brought to you by your delaware valley acura dealers for great deals on our uh acura’s award-winning lineup shop online delval acuradealers.com when we come back frank close is going to talk to us about it why are the philly such a bad defensive team is there somebody to blame here last night ricky batalico asked john crock why are they so bad defensively why who’s to blame well crook can’t answer that question so frank close will and i’ll ask him coming up here on the sports best live on 97.3 espn and the free mobile app all right phillies lose five back of the braves now a series with arizona how important is the series we’ll talk to frank close 973 espn.com he’ll join us to talk a little bit about that why are the philly such a lousy defensive team whose fault is that but taligo asked kruk last night but kruck can’t answer the question so i’ll have frank answer that question whose fault is it that the phillies are such a bad defensive team as he joins us now here on the sports pass live on 97.3 espn in the free mobile app what’s going on frank not much how are you mike i feel good i watched that game last night and a lot of people discussing should wheeler have been pulled from the game i for one have been critical of gerardi for pulling his starters to go to a lousy bullpen in the past so typically i’m okay with what he did and last night i’m in the same boat could he have pulled him sure but to me he should have never been in that situation defensively they’re so bad that that game was in that situation so why are they first off did you have a problem with gerardi pulling wheeler last night see not necessarily he only had what 89 pitches at the time and you know what i feel like if he had gone to the bullpen and the bullpen can you know comploded imploded and cost them that game i think that the people would be the same people might be upset today saying well why did he take out zach wheeler he only had 89 pitches so i you know if that’s your ace i almost feel like you need to give your ace the chance to to to finish his own game the problem was here’s the problem though it was a tie game so whether he stayed in or not that game was not going to end with zach wheeler on the mound probably unless unless he held them off and then they won in the bottom of the ninth but you know i i i’m still kind of i’m still kind of in the middle uh you know and then then some people said well after the first batter gets on then then maybe he’ll let him but he’s throwing a lot of double plays so and then two or one at that point you know two outs you feel like well maybe he can pull through so i’m kind of i’m kind of split on this i don’t have a strong opinion about this one way or the other well i don’t either so much like who’s he going to in that spot is he going to kennedy is he going to nearest because if he goes daenerys people are going to complain right i think he was going to go to kennedy i mean you know you go to your closer in the top of the ninth in a tie game that that’s kind of a common thing to do in baseball so if he and kennedy came in and like i said gave up a run then you might be you might be hearing all kinds of things about girardi anyway so yeah it’s almost like you’re damned if you do dance if you don’t in that situation yeah so what about defensively in your opinion who takes the blame as to why this is such a bad defensive team matt clantac i suppose uh yeah i mean the unfortunate thing is not here to defend himself well he’s not but really you know this this this got set up by previous decisions right so alec bohm when he came up kind of the strategy was okay small sample size in 2020 he was okay you think you’re going to get through a good year or at least a passable year in 2021 they made that mistake with reese hoskins right they had a small sample size in left field they thought okay reese can see him play left field and then he was a complete butcher out there so um and then of course dombrowski he really might be better and left than he is at first yeah he uh something happened with your mic there frank so uh we lost you see if we can’t maybe uh get you to reconnect that thing there um no we don’t got you there at all you are completely out but uh yeah you’re right uh they use hoskins in left field and it’s something that i wonder if down the road if you kind of talked about this before um if they can use bowman left field is he going to be just as bad as hoskins was in left field but i asked frank why are they so bad defensively who do you blame he went to clintock as the reason why now if we can get frank to kind of uh get him reconnected here i have this you hear me all right i got you okay frank has a backup mic ready to go at his house um where were we so uh so clint excuse me dombrowski really wanted to upgrade shortstop defensively and to do so he was looking at andrelton simmons over dede gregorius and dede was kind of the one available fallback and you know what i i thought that well one if he had signed simmons this would have been a tough year for simmons as well uh but you know dd if didi didn’t get that pseudo gout i think that really has affected his play and i don’t know that you could have foreseen that that would happen to dede your deity is usually better than this i think it’s very clear when dd is not feeling well uh he’s not the same player and when he’s on he’s on and so unfortunately for the phillies they have gd who’s a little banged up but but really i mean the in terms of decisions that zambrowski made i mean that that was really the only decision that kind of affected the makeup of this team defensively right so you have hoskins at first i mean last night let’s get your opinion on that um those are plays that big league first baseman have to make right i mean i know they went out of their way on that broadcast to talk about oh he’s hurt the groin those balls have to be fielded yeah you know it’s unfortunate because this is not going to solve itself it looks like it seems like whatever hoskins is dealing with is going to be here to stay for a while he’s not going to play every day and and that’s problematic in a lot of ways because you need his bat and you’re just going to have to suck it up and deal with that defense unfortunately i think because from what i mean we also as we were just saying hoskins was never that strong a defensive first baseman to begin with but he can’t stretch like like it just looks painful i feel the pain watching hoskins play first base and that makes me think that you know what this is this is not going to be a a quick solution he’s not going to heal fast and the problem is you don’t really have a lot of offensive defensive options to make up for him at this point i mean that that’s a problem with the trade deadline being july 31st you can’t make any more trades for anybody on anybody else’s 40-man roster let’s let’s ask this question then could they i mean i know boom’s a butcher over there but is he a better option to go play first base with his bat and hopefully he gets hot and let hoskins just be a right-handed bat off the bench for a little while here i think you got to play him when you can i you know he’s if he can give you anything like you saw he said three home runs since he came back off the injured list hasn’t been able to really feel the position unfortunately they’re not playing road games that are inter league games so they have a designated hitter uh but but i don’t know i i i don’t feel a lot a lot better with with alec bowman first base either you’re going to get the same defense i think if you have a healthy alec bowmer an injured rhys hoskins so i mean this is just a really really tough situation i mean if if i’m if i’m the phillies i’m looking at the waiver wire i’m trying to see what’s what’s out there um just do do a little bit of shopping off of somebody else’s aaa team someone who’s not on a 40-man roster in fact there’s uh there’s somebody i was kind of eying yesterday his name is adeline rodriguez he’s a aaa first baseman 29 years old isn’t on any prospect lists but so far this season he has 23 home runs is batting 302 and and an ops of 968. so do you take a shot on somebody like that who can maybe supplement it first base a little bit that that you know it really takes some creativity because again you you can’t trade for a player that’s on a 40-man roster so maybe go look around what’s not on the 40-minute i mean when the phillies got brad miller originally they found him in the minor leagues for the yankees so that’s how they that’s how they traded for him so uh you might have to try to do something like that and something out of the box and creative because i think this phillies team needs some help well i mean it’s evident you can’t play hoskins every single day and you know you can’t play brad miller every single day so they’re going to have to come up with another idea here and maybe just use hoskins as a right-handed bat off the bench and save them for that one moment in the game that foul ball that pop up in foul territory that ball has to be caught by an 11 year old yeah too many outs are just ruining these these starting pitchers i mean as many good starts the phillies have had from starting pitchers they’ve really could have gone so much further without these outs again the nola almost complete game you know he was they gave away outs for that they gave away else with suarez on the mound they’re giving away outs here so it just it just can’t happen if you’re gonna compete yeah and frank you know i was talking about this right before you came on baseball defense is something that is never discussed like in football you say ah that’s a good defense man that’s a really good defense in basketball you know um the brooklyn net they don’t play any defense oh the sixers they have a good defense no one talks about baseball defense but you saw the difference last night between a good defensive team and a bad defensive team and what it meant in that game and what it’s meant in this series and what it’s meant for this season many many games you could say that in fact i think some of zac eflin’s worst starts were games that the defense let him down and it just kind of led to other things down the way so zac eflin’s coming back today he’s somebody that relies on defense and uh i i i’d be interested to see how they’re going to set up the defense i mean freddie got of course freddie galvez makes an error on his first first ball you know they get him for his defense but and that one by the way i didn’t even think hoskins if he was healthy could have helped him out on that that ball kind of yeah far off yeah unfortunately that was the case but you know what you’re going to have to play your your best possible defense i mean you probably have to play a lot of galveston toureas on the left side and and on the right i guess miller is your best defensive option and unfortunately when brad miller starts and plays a lot he doesn’t hit as well as he does when he’s coming off the bench yeah well and that let’s say you know they decide look we need a right-handed first baseman they don’t really galvez has been playing some first base i guess in some of the warm-ups they’ve been having him with the first baseman on correct correct but you know he was even told to be ready to play some first base and i i i don’t know i i if if he’s going to be in the game i’d rather be someplace that’s that’s a more challenging position right i was gonna say it’s not like they have that j bruce type of corner outfielder hanging around uh that could play some first base so really your option would be either galvest or i guess bringing bone back um and sending williams back down to the miners which would which would hamstring you as with an extra outfielder yeah there’s really no good solution right now and that’s the shape that’s a shame of this year all right frank over at 973espn.com and by the way i don’t know that they’ll bring bone back up i don’t know that that’s even an option but it’s just something that i was kind of thinking about last night watching the game like i get it he’s not very good over there either but at least he catches well you hope he catches that pop-up and keeps the ball in the infield four plays last night i thought hoskins really hurt them so i don’t know how much more they can go to them you wrote over at 97.3 espn that perhaps dombroski is just getting started shaking up the phillies so what could be next well i think he’s going to do with the roster what he just did with the front office and we had just said like on the air what an hour before we found out that that josh bonifay was being let go or from his position as director of player development that he was let go so so it sounds like dombrowski is willing to not worry about hurt feelings not worried about if the person got a legitimate chance because bonifay only had really two seasons to to to develop players uh he’s he looks like he’s going to be bold and i i have no reason to expect that he’s not going to be equally bold with how this roster is put together because let’s face it when you when you join an organization december 11th a lot of the decisions on that roster have already been made and a lot of decisions around baseball have already been made so you lost out on the ability to make any real change this past off season and so i think he’s gonna i think you’re gonna see a very very different team next year he’s watching what we’re all watching and if there’s no dh to put hoskins or boom i wouldn’t be shocked if he moves either or both of them i i think this what we’re talking about right now about defense is going to really change his approach next off season and i think it could come in a very big way i was uh i tweeted this out earlier and it’s not like you know earth shattering but the contracts of harper and real muto would not be desirable to another team correct i think that’s fair to say with that the only desirable guy goes back to hoskins right so if they really want to shake this thing up hoskins nola those two guys would be the two biggest possibilities of getting moved in the off season if dombroski does what you’re suggesting i think they’re very much in play to be treated i mean even nola you know he’s getting close to the end of that deal he signed uh for a team that’s contending or perhaps doesn’t have a big payroll i think he’s reasonably priced for next year i think teams would love to have him and might give up some prospects for him now then the phillies would have to replace him somehow but you know that that could be part of other deals that he makes so i think it’s important to to give this a different look hey look look at chuck fletcher with the flyers what did he say after he made all those trades right he said look the guys we had weren’t doing it so we got to try something else well the philippines essentially has become the phillies have essentially become somewhat of a version of the flyers not quite as long with voracek and giroux and couturier who had all been there for multiple but you’re starting to get to that point where these guys are now going on three seasons the hoskins the harper the real muto the segura the dd the mccutcheon these guys have been playing like three years together and have proven to be nothing more than a 500 team that’s absolutely correct and you know what you can’t fall in love with your own players and want to keep them around because you like them i mean sometimes sometimes you got to shake it up sometimes you have to make trades that you don’t like making sometimes you’re going to say goodbye to players that that you don’t want to say goodbye to but at the end of the day this is a results-oriented business and you gotta win so i i can see the phillies i’m really shaking things up here with dabrowski at the helm and i think i think it’s very very clear from these moves we saw this week that he that he has full backing of ownership to do whatever he thinks is necessary and i totally expect him to do so frank close cover the phillies 973espn.com in your mind how imperative is this four game set with arizona i mean are we starting to get i joke all the time mike mcgarry writes his column called must win which kind of came from us having twitter battles about him saying that oh these are must win games he was saying it like june a couple of years ago there’s no must-win games in june are these must-win games against arizona yes i think that the braves they won those nine games in a row because they beat up on the bad teams that they’re supposed to beat now the phillies didn’t beat up on arizona in arizona but they’re at home they have nothing to blame but themselves if they don’t take advantage of these here because that’s how they’re going to catch up to the braves as well the braves are playing san francisco the braves are playing los angeles the phillies take care of business against the bad teams you know they got to be within striking distance before they face the braves at the end of the month of september so this is the time you do it you win these games against arizona you win these games upcoming games against the likes of baltimore and the nationals phillies have to win these games period they got pittsburgh coming up as well baltimore pittsburgh they have a seven game set with those guys before they play the braves so some would say hey you have a chance to make up some ground right before you play uh atlanta but these games here the atlanta’s i mean the arizona’s washington miami these are i say out of 10. you’ve got to win almost 8 out of 10 of these games hey the braves won nine out of nine when they had a similar stretch recently and that’s that’s that’s what propelled the braves to be where they are that in the phillies losing those games to the to the diamondbacks so now that the schedule is turning a little bit towards the phillies now joe girardi will tell you he doesn’t want to hear about the schedule because at the end of the day you need to win these games the phillies need to win these games they need to win those games against the cubs orioles pirates rockies like they’ve got a lot of teams there that they on paper should be beating and the phillies have to win these games if they’re going to win the nl east and if they don’t they have no one to blame but themselves yeah uh zack effluent goes today hey we talked about this the other day but if you look at the pitching coming up here you’ve got a very favorable group of pitchers that all five days frank you feel there’s no matt moore there’s no chase anderson there’s no um vince velazquez all five guys you feel pretty good about rolling out over the last month of the season here definitely the one thing though is like like when ranger suarez joined the rotation zac ethan’s probably gonna have to grow into it a little bit uh the phillies did not give him a long rehab assignment because let’s face it they need him so uh i wouldn’t expect eflin to go too deep today uh but he’s got to build back up so the bullpen behind him better be ready today uh luckily they didn’t really pitch yesterday all right frank close uh brogden got the call on the ninth last night he was the guy who came in to follow up zach wheeler by the way was that ball fair or foul i think it could have been fair all right you’re allowed to be critical yeah that’s okay all right frank close 973espn.com check out his story right now on our website he says perhaps dombroski is just getting started shaking up the phillies read more about it at 973espn.com follow him on twitter at frank close with a k all right frank take care pal thanks mike always good fashion terrible defense the cause of it i don’t have a problem with girardi leaving his ace pitcher out there because if he didn’t we would be complaining that narish just coughed up another one so go with your best take your shot there he didn’t make a good pitch that’s what it comes down to but that being said he should have never been in that position it’s up to rhys hoskins the leader of this team quote-unquote to go to the manager and tell him i am hurting the team it’s it’s okay to say today’s not my day right it’s okay to say hey coach i don’t have it today it’s probably better if you get me out of here there’s two plays that the phillies get out of innings without giving up a run if they in fact make plays at first base that are easily made easily made 609-403-0973 dan from ehc are the phillies ready now easy schedule actually starts tonight good question dan are they ready not with this defense inconsistent defense at the major league level causes more issues than anything else you can have great pitching but if your defense can’t make the plays you’re great pitching he’s just good if your good pitcher doesn’t get great defense behind him he’s just average great defense unlocks the doors that can’t be opened and right now the door that can’t be opened for the phillies is that playoff door they can’t open that door until they field the ball their offense will come and go their defense or their pitching will keep them in games they’ve got good enough starting pitching their bullpen has kind of leveled out but in the end this defense is what’s going to be their achilles heel this is what’s going to keep them out of the playoffs in the end when you look at it why did the phillies not make the playoffs it’s an answer that not many people will give ah their pitching wasn’t great their bullpen was horrible their offense didn’t hit no they didn’t make the playoffs because they could not do the simplest of tasks field the ball they have got to be one of the worst defensive teams i’ve ever seen and somehow they’re not the worst defensive team in all of baseball fielding percentage-wise when it comes to making errors their 75 is fifth worst in baseball look at the teams at the bottom minnesota they’re the worst team in baseball they’re the worst team in terms of heirs miami marlins they’re one of the worst defensive teams in the league why have the red sox gone south defensively they’re terrible the phillies are bottom five in the league in defense and that’s why they’re one of the worst teams i don’t want to say one of the worst teams in baseball that’s not fair that is why they’ve been disappointing this season this team should be better than 500. how much better that i’m not sure i can’t sit here and tell you this team should be 10 games over 500 but you know what realistically they probably should be they have good enough talent to be 10 games over 500 especially with what they’re up against in the nationally east not good the central’s terrible you’ve got a lot of your games playing the east and the central you’ve got to be better than 500. why can’t they be you watched it last night it’s embarrassing and i would imagine the philly’s lineup is not out yet but i would imagine right i would imagine that hoskins is not in the lineup tonight and i think uh girardi said that last night but i would be surprised if if girardi has to sit him down for this entire series and use him as just a right-handed bat off the bench what i think i would do if i’m the phillies is i’d probably bring boom back up i know i know i’m more of a bomb guy than most but i need a little bit of right-handed pop and he doesn’t provide it i know he doesn’t have a lot of home runs but i’m putting him in the lineup as a right-handed bat and play him in at first base and i probably send luke williams down to the miners if i need another outfielder i’ve got galves up here now he can go play the outfield luke williams isn’t helping me he’s not maker breaking this roster but you can’t play rhys hoskins at first base anymore you just can’t do it and rhys hoskins has to be a leader in a team that is desperate to find someone to step up he’s got to be the guy to do it and say coach don’t play me in the field i’m not ready it’s admirable that you tried but it hurt the team last night i mike gill this is the sports bass live on 973 on 97.3 espn check out our website 973espn.com frank close writing about the phillies are they done he says dombroski just getting started shaking up this team what’s he mean check it out 97.3 espn.com plus the flyers have signed sean couturier to a new eight-year extension get the details right now at 973espn.com plus another story about the eagles that um think about this how many uh what was it august the 10th i think was the date august the 10th patrick robinson retired from the nfl and today another member of the eagles super bowl winning team retired from the nfl get the details right now at 973espn.com you know it starts to make you feel about how long ago the eagles won that super bowl time moves quickly and all these guys retiring from that super bowl team it starts to really make you open your eyes about how long ago how quickly things move not only in life but in sports the eagles were 13-3 they were on top of the world they were the super bowl champions the three quarterbacks that were on that roster all gone wentz fols sud fell of the 53-man roster think about this legarrette blount no longer in the league corey clement um hanging around with the giants jay ajayi was 24 years old on that championship team he is now gone wendell smallwood gone kenyon barner out of the league darren sproles retired nelson aguilar new england torrey smith retired zac ert still in philadelphia al shawn jeffrey out of the league matt collins down in miami brett selick retired those were your players that helped you win a super bowl of that group one is still on your roster by the way trey burton another one out of the league i think trey burton’s out of the league i’m pretty sure he is he has really bounced around since that super bowl team i think he was in indianapolis maybe chicago i think he was in indianapolis last year chicago the year before that but of that group that whole offense zach hurts is the only guy left think about it defensively not nigel brown out of the league malcolm jenkins with the saints michael kendricks i think he’s out of the league he got himself into a little bit of trouble jalen mills he was 23 years old on that team he is now in new england rodney mccloud is here in philadelphia patrick robinson retired brandon graham is here cory graham out of the league vinnie curry had to basically retire yesterday ronald darby was 23 years old on that team he is now i think darby he was in washington last year i know he’s somewhere else this year i don’t remember where chris long out of the league rasul douglas just signed with the raiders fletcher cox is still here jordan hicks is in he got hurt that year but he is in arizona timmy jernigan i think is out of the league derrick barnett is here camus gruger hill is in miami najee good i believe is out of the league bo allen jalen watkins chris maragos those guys i mean think about that defense essentially the only guys that are still here are brandon graham fletcher cox and vinnie curry not vinnie curry uh derek barnett time moves fast in the nfl the only guys i didn’t mention from that team was the offensive line and they’re all still here except for jason peters and big v but the entire offensive line is the only group of guys that are still left jason kelsey isaac sayamalu brandon brooks and lane johnson they’re all still here but it just goes to show how fast things move and how fast things change in the nfl it’s such a fast-moving league man from one year to the next and that is why when you look at the eagles last year going 4-11-1 you can’t take that as gospel well just because you were bad one year doesn’t mean you’re gonna be bad the next just because the same roster you had right just because the roster that you had intact last year seemingly comes back it doesn’t this roster is not the same roster that you saw last year the roster that you saw for the philadelphia eagles last year it’s not this roster it’s not this roster at all this roster has lane johnson last year’s did not this roster has brandon brooks last year’s did not this roster has isaac sayamala he missed a big chunk of games last year this roster has jordan myelata he didn’t play left tackle exclusively last year they finally settled in on him this roster didn’t have devonta smith this roster didn’t have a lot of the this roster has a lot of different pieces than the roster had last year over at cbs sports they ranked the eagles and young offensive cores in football while expectations might not be high for the 2021 eagles the future seems bright the offense features a plethora of exciting options first round picks it wide receiver devonta smith jaylen rager they also have plenty of of of talent around those two with second year quarterback jalen ernst running back miles sanders kenneth gainwell plus promising young wide receiver chris watkins travis folgham and then of course there’s dallas goddard with all that talent cbs sports nfl writer chris tapasso ranked the nfl’s top 10 young offensive cores with the eagles group coming in at number three in the nfl yeah number three saying quote man there’s a lot of young talent in philadelphia i’m not particularly high on hertz but the rationale behind that statement is for another article sanders feels like he’s been an eagles lead back for like five seasons he’s only 24. we saw what watkins can do with the ball in his hands in philly’s first preseason outing the 4-3-5 he ran at the combine legitimately translates to the field and fulgum was a glimmer of hope in the eagles receiving unit last season oh yeah then there’s the two first-rounders rieger and smith if healthy they can compete they can be complete wide outs who win with separation ability yak juice and ball tracking mastery downfield this is a young fun core their criteria was used as the starting quarterback no later than his fifth nfl season that works hertz is in his second receivers in tight ends entering no later than their fourth nfl season and running backs no later than their third think about the core of this eagle’s offense second year first year second year second year third year for miles sanders and dallas goddard goddard i think is in his fourth the eagles were the only nfc east team that made this list and as i’ve been saying here on the sports bash if the eagles offensive line can stay healthy they should be one of the best units in the nfl with that a lot falls on the shoulders of jalen hurts who has some weapons to play with if he can get them the ball and then let them use their speed like we saw in the preseason game with quez watkins against the steelers that’s a great formula get the ball out quick and let those guys do the work if the eagles can just get average play from jalen hurts they should be significantly better if hertz can take a step forward this season expect the eagles to improve not only this season but in future seasons as well 609 403 0973 609 403 send us a text on the text board and also through the free mobile app you can hit message us and send your message to the matlab kia studios as i look up and down that roster from the eagles super bowl season in 2017 look at all the changes that have happened but think about the changes from 17 to the previous year 16. when you think about the previous season the philadelphia eagles how many of those guys helped you out well ryan matthews gone he wasn’t here in 17. josh huff bryce trags jordan matthews dorial green beckham paul turner those guys were all on the roster the previous season as was guys like nolan carroll leotis mcelveen connor barwin benny logan marcus smith ron brooks yeah see how fast things can change in this league from one year to the next that’s the vibe that i’m getting around this team not super bowl vibe but quick changing fives and that article over at cbs sports kind of backs it up people around the league are seeing what the eagles are building here speed on the offensive side of the ball now speed doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to win it takes a lot more than just straight line speed but what it does take is a creative play caller who can figure out ways to get the speed the ball it’s one problem i had with doug peterson i wasn’t a doug peterson hater by any stretch of the imagination nor did i even think he deserved to be fired but what i will say is i thought peterson did a poor job of getting his playmakers the ball and accentuating the positives of the players that they did have in other words i’ve got a speed guy in quez watkins well how many times did you run a bubble screen for him and let him utilize his 4-3 speed in the open field i don’t remember too many sure he might have done it once or twice but once it worked hey how about a jet sweep hey how about a bubble screen hey how about just a opportunity to catch the ball on a quick little hook reverse field and get up the field they did not do a good job in that aspect in fact you could say that it’s fair to say that doug peterson failed mightily in that act in that avenue getting the ball accentuating the positives of the players that he did have they did not do a very good job there and i quite frankly i don’t want to say it got him fired but it got people to say i’m not so sure right i’m not so sure that doug did a great job with utilizing or developing is the word i guess young talent right i don’t think that he ever ended up doing a good job i don’t think he was looked at as a guy who did a great job developing the young town on this team and unfortunately in the end i think that might have been what ended up doing him in they had a difference of opinion they didn’t see eye to eye and that is why with this team i don’t know much about nick siriani i don’t know what kind of coach he’s going to be i really don’t but what i think nick ciriani could do is get more from the guys that doug peterson didn’t get much from and that’s what i’m looking forward to last year’s nfl season was something for the eagles that was not very predictable right vegas had them winning 10 games last year 10. they came well short of that well can they hit somewhere in the middle this year is it possible that i say 10 uh in the middle is it possible that the eagles are a team that this year is only predicted to win six or seven games but maybe they go on to surpass that i think that’s a better possibility than what happened last year and a lot of it has to do with the speed play caller play designer all that stuff that’s what has me excited about this season what has you excited about this season as we’re getting into the final preseason game send me a text 609-403-0973-609-403-0 and tell me what is something that has you excited about this eagle season in a season that doesn’t have a lot of expectations what is something that you’re excited about what’s one thing that hey they might not have a winning season but i’m excited to watch this what is it 609 403 0973 we’ll read them all throughout the show let me know all right because yeah this season doesn’t have a lot of expectations we can all admit that that this season kind of feels like ah i’m intrigued i’m excited but but what is something that you’re excited to see what is it something that you’re excited to find out so for some of you it might be jalen hurts for some of you it might be devonta smith but what is that thing that you really want to find out about this team what has you excited about this particular team because i think there is a wide variety of answers that could be sent to us there should be anyway there’s a whole bunch of things that i’m excited about i’ll list off a few throughout the day throughout the show these are you know a handful of things that i would say i’m excited about x y and z these are a group of things that i’m pretty excited about one boom boom boom and i can tell you one thing off the bat is it’s what’s old is new something i’m excited to find out about is can this offensive line be the offensive line that we thought it could be or that we think it can be because if it can be then i get a chance to see this offense in action then i got a chance to see how this offense operates something i couldn’t get a chance to see last year at every every opportunity somebody went down on that offensive line so that’s something that excites me off the bat can this offensive line really be what jump starts the offense that’s cool i’m excited about that what has you excited 609-403-0973-609-403-0973 it’s the sports bash live on 97.3 espn and the free mobile app don’t forget download the app in the apple store or google play it’s free thanks to first bank of sea isle now there’s other things that i’m excited about with this team and i can start really looking down the depth chart here and give you something about almost every guy that i’m looking forward to you know when i say jalen hurts of course i want to see how jalen hurts runs the team i don’t even know that it’s hey can he be the franchise quarterback i don’t even know that that’s what i’m looking for can he be the franchise quarterback i don’t know that franchise quarterback is something that this team looks at right now nick foles wasn’t a franchise quarterback but what nick foles did was he ran the offense he had a very good defense and he ran the offense but i’m ready to see if jalen hurts is as advertised what does that mean can he lead an offense not be the franchise quarterback he’s not going to be aaron rodgers i’m not sure he’s going to be russell wilson but what he can be is a guy who leads a franchise there’s a difference between being a leader of a franchise and a franchise quarterback and i think that jalen hurts what i’m excited to find out is can he lead a franchise so we’ll go down the roster something you’re excited about with this particular team something that has you really excited to find out this season 609-403-0973 watching the show leave it in the comments section as well as the free mobile app hit the message us button and leave your messages in the free mobile app they come to the matlatkia studios i’m mike gill this is the sports bass live on 97.3 espn the free mobile app and of course coming up in about five minutes from now we’ll talk to professor john clayton he tells us there’s five teams that could surprise this season which five teams could surprise this season we’ll ask him that coming up next here on the sports bash live on 97.3 espn plus we’ll get his thoughts on some of the quarterback situations that are now kind of firming themselves up but when we come back five nfl teams that could surprise this season plus i want to know from you give me something that has you excited about this year’s eagles team whether they win lose or draw what are you excited to find out about 609-403-0973 you’re excited about the eagles this season because fill in the blank i’m back with more sports bash 97.3 espn the free mobile app all right 3 25 on your thursday busy day today phillies taking on arizona tonight tomorrow the eagles are back in action right here on 97.3 espn they take on the jets john clayton the washington post long time nfl writer got five teams that could surprise this year see if philadelphia is one of them they’ve got a lot of interesting stories we’ll get into that as well i want to get john’s take on what’s going on in the nfl in terms of the preseason john it seems that joint practices are in and preseason games are out is that the new wave are we going to start seeing that that is kind of what takes over the nfl decision making process certainly something that you can see coaches uh warming up to because like last week there were 16 teams that had joint practices and most of the coaches in those 16 teams did not even play their starters uh in the in the preseason games in a lot of ways even though again you can risk injury you can have fights you can have all those different things in a joint practice i mean you’re not really risking as much even though because again you’re putting the players out there and you’re gonna have first team against second team second team against third team all those different things and you can get more players involved than you can in a pre-season game and so what the trend has been this year in week one of the preseason there was 522 players that didn’t play in the the first preseason week and last week uh in week two it was 565 and a lot of that was because of the fact that you had the 16 teams in dual practice so this week we have i think four teams having dual practices so that number is probably going to decline into the 400s but you can see that you don’t want to try to risk injury in some of these preseason games and ultimately what you wonder about will they eliminate the preseason games money talks with that one john as we all know those owners want to keep those buildings open but it seems that the coaches uh or who knows i mean there’s been some reports here that jeffrey laurie and howie roseman have kind of been behind not playing them do the coaches want to use them and do the front office guys say hey i don’t want these guys to get hurt i guess that’ll be something that kind of comes out down the line but we do have a lot of stories in these preseason that are kind of coming to fruition here and over at the washington post you have a couple of teams that you think could surprise so let’s look at some of the teams that you like this year that could be surprise candidates let’s start with one the los angeles chargers they’re interesting because they’ve got a lot of talent they always seem close but always seem to lose that game in the end so why is this year different well the the year’s different because they made a coaching change you know auntie anthony lynn got off to a good start last year and then everything collapsed and one thing with anthony lynn as the coach for whatever reason they were just not good in closing games and so now they got brandon staley coming over you know he has a chance to you know establish himself a little bit more changing from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense but when you look at the talent on that team you know the seven teams that had coaching changes they’re the most talented team you know they’ve got keenan allen at wide receiver justin herbert was the rookie of the year last year uh they made great strides as far as fixing their offensive line which was horrible last year and so i think that they have a great chance to be a surprise team because when you look at them you know even though what they were like five and eleven six and ten last year they were a team that uh you can say this year they should be a wild card playoff team all right another team that i think a lot of people are buzzing about and there’s a couple of prongs to this is the denver broncos great roster they made their decision on quarterback so kind of talk about the quarterback decision and why they could surprise well we get surprised because when you look at the you know now obviously vic fangio is on the hot seat because he’s had two losing seasons and he was owen seven in september in his first two years as head coach well one of the things that works in his favor is the fact that george payton the new general manager you know put together now the deepest secondary and the best secondary in the national football league you know their three deep and wide receiver now the courtroom sutton sutton’s coming back from acl surgery you know pro football focus has them as the sixth best pass catching group in the national football league they’re good on the offensive line they made the decision to go to teddy bridgewater but here’s the other thing that helps them out a lot easy schedule i mean you know they have the fifth easiest schedule in the national football league and then when you look and this is i think one of the reasons that uh vic ended up taking teddy bridgewater making the starting quarterback you look at them in september they take on the new york giants the jacksonville jaguars and the jets that’s nine and 39 for the record of the teams in the last uh instep you know 9-39 for the september schedule if they can’t start off 2-1-3-0 vic’s in trouble but they should because you know you can see the fangio is being aggressive i mean he’s gone for six fourth downs you know he’s got the one of the deepest running back groups so i think they’re in good shape too and of course the easy schedule is going to help them out a whole bunch john clayton’s with us from the washington post for more on these five teams check out the washingtonpost.com you mentioned the giants you like them to possibly be a surprise this nfc east seems to be all over the place yeah it really is and one of the things that you can see is that the nfce schedule particularly with the fact that you didn’t have a winning team in the in the division you know it really stacks up that’s why for example you have to figure a surprise team and i wouldn’t include dallas because you know dallas has dak prescott coming back uh they’ve got you know three good receivers although right now they got so many things going on with uh you know covet 19 problems i think what they’ve got seven players on the on the covet list including dd cd ram but somebody in this division has to be a surprise team that washington they won the division so you can’t make them a surprise team at seven and nine i’m leaning toward the giants over the eagles now the eagles how about the fact that the eagles have uh you know the easiest schedule in the national football league a 4-7-17 schedule that only has five teams on it with uh 500 records or better but i still think if you look at the giants i’m not totally sold on them but you know they’re six and ten last year we’ll see if daniel jones can do some things certainly they’re real good on the defensive line not certain where they are in the offensive line but i think they could be a little bit of a surprise team mainly because of the schedule yeah as john notes in his washington post article that uh the eagles and the giants deserve consideration you went with the giants we’ll see what happens with philly uh obviously uh they’ve got a lot of questions and some of it’s health related can that offensive line stay healthy another team you like is arizona which is interesting because you mentioned vic fangio on the hot seat i would imagine uh that’s the case for cliff kingsbury as well yeah and that’s and that’s uh it’s kind of similar to what anthony lynn went through last year i mean you look at arizona they got off to like a six and three start and then they came back and uh you know pretty much only won two games the rest of the season and so they went two and five down to stretch and so if cliff kingsbury can’t you know fix up the closing part of this the games in the closing part of the second half of the season then he’s going to be out but i mean still you’ve got kyler murray you know the defense did pick up j.j watt uh they got a good uh linebacker and zach collins who’s going to help them out a bunch their defense should be better you know at wide receiver they have aj green and the andre hopkins not sold where they are at running back but the tough part for them they’re in the best division in football because the nfc west is so loaded that even if they go nine and seven they still could finish in fourth place but you still look at the cardinals and you say you know what the four teams in the nfc west all have a chance to make the playoffs john uh the last team on your list is interesting that they would be listed as a surprise after 20 years of domination but you think the patriots are primed to bounce i don’t back i don’t know if they’re prime you know it’s funny because i mean you look at a lot of the preseason ratings that are coming out and they’re like for talent 17th and 16th but it has to think that uh you know there’s so many positive things that can get them back over the seven win season they have last year like for example i mean matt jones is really doing a good job right now and you look at cam newton and you wonder is he going to be the starter and i think that’s very much in question particularly after the past week where he was on the cover list for uh five days because he kind of broke protocol as far as his testing and of course that’s to to me that’s baffling because you go back to last year cam newton you know he got on the positive test on cobot 19. or he even admitted how much it affected him uh for almost like a month and you know he now doesn’t get a vaccination and so he has to be tested every day i mean to me that’s almost irresponsible because i mean he hurt himself last year and you look at the fact that he only averaged like 6.4 yards per attempt passing and he you know just didn’t have any yards passing the football but right now you look they added two 12 and a half million dollar tight ends uh nelson aguirre at 11 million dollars they added uh you know kendrick uh bourne you know they their linebacking course so much better because they get high smith back or it’s like you know alonzo high smith they get and then on top of it they got cowboy then always uh after he was cut bring him back you know so they’re they’re really in top shape right now and i don’t know if they’re going to be good enough to catch buffalo because i think buffalo has such a big uh gap on them at the moment but i think that they can be and again so it’s amazing to say surprise team new england after all those great years with joe belichick john i know you’re close uh out there in seattle with the seahawks and what’s going on out there we haven’t heard a whole heck of a lot from seattle on the east coast over here how are the seahawks kind of shaping up i think shaving up really well i mean they’ve still got a couple issues right now with hold ins because you know dwayne brown’s a hold in and he wants some more money which is understandable you know they were able to get a deal done with jamal adams for 17 and a half million dollars now quandary digs the other pro bowl safety you know he’s a hold in just this week because he wants more money which is understandable because they’re making 6.2 million but i mean you look at the fact that you know the seahawks have improved their pass rush because they got carlos dunlap who really helped them last year they had to carry hider and they’re about eight deep right now at defensive end so that helps them out you know they were able to go ahead and get gerald everett tight end because they got chris carson back on a long term deal tyler lockett on a long term deal and they got the best quarterback in the division and russell bolson that division seems to be interesting though and of course san francisco drafted a quarterback at number two he’s not going to see the field right away but are the 49ers back this year i think so yeah but here’s my big concern is that you know talent wise they’re back but i just keep getting concerned about their injury situation in the last two or three years they’ve been one of the most injured teams in football last year they missed over 135 starts because of injury and uh you know there’s still mounting injuries as the as training camp goes on and so you wonder are the injuries going to hold them back i mean certainly the fact that uh you know
