Education Key to Realize the Afghan Promise: Challenges and Opportunities 2021 – Keynote Edgar Perez

once upon a time a boy lived in lima in a shanty town in the outskirts this boy wanted to practice math it was just basic simple math additions and subtractions math was a world that he had discovered at school thanks to the patience and diligence of his teachers however he had run out of paper his family was unable to afford fancy new notebooks or copy paper so he persuaded his mother to talk to the shopkeepers in the area to provide him with all newspapers he reasoned there will always be a blank space between the news and the adverts that little boy was me and the only reason that i’m standing in front of you today is because of education that’s why it’s so concerning to me that at this very moment the right of comprehensive education in afghanistan for millions of girls and women is in danger if the prior rule of the taliban two decades ago is any guide with indeed we might be facing a comprehensive challenge for this half of the population in the country who had already discovered the empowerment that education brings in order to provide for basic survival skills that today’s world demands afghanistan the mountainous country of 32 million people in central asia possesses rail minerals that are in high demand by industrial manufacturing today in fact the country owns vast reserves of coal lithium uranium and fossil fuels a recent study by the afghan ministry of mines and petroleum estimated that the country minerals wealth is around 3 trillion u.s dollars this country owns what the world desperately needs as the taliban is set to establish a new government the responsibility to provide jobs education and peace becomes paramount these offerings cannot exclude half of the population of the country foreign investment will need to be brought to encourage economic growth and prosperity for all this goal would be utterly unattainable without a contribution of capable and ambitious women any example today of develop economies will show how important this contribution becomes china is the superpower that stands the best chance of benefiting from this promise in fact china might become as well the first nation to recognize the new government in afghanistan at this very moment not many chinese companies are operating in the country but i expect china to increase its involvement in the country’s development furthermore i expect china to play a very important role in encouraging universal access to education in afghanistan in the same way that this type of access proved paramount for the country’s fast growth in the last decades after 20 years of an incomplete effort to build a nation an american retreat is paving the way for a chinese entry will china be able to fare better than prior superpowers will the taliban be able to achieve much needed stability in the country will the taliban be able to maintain its new promises to guarantee absolute access to education for the millions of men and women in afghanistan this is edgar perez and i’m looking forward to discussing these challenges and opportunities with you
