Hercules Live-Action Reboot: Everything We Know So Far

[Music] hey folks it’s time to talk about hercules disney’s next exercise in franchise extension and brand management yes it’s another live action remake custom designed to one make a billion dollars and two remind us of how much we loved the animated original i’m sorry that sounded kind of cynical honestly it’s hard not to be a little cynical about these disney remakes but while the live-action hercules is still in the early stages of development there are some interesting details to discuss so we’re going to try to approach this with cautious optimism kid come inside i want to show you something so first things first who is the creative engine driving this baby well the headline news is that the russo brothers are producing you might remember joe and anthony from a few episodes of community like the paintball one oh and one of them had a cameo in one of the biggest movies of all time now it’s important to note that the russos will be on producing duties only they will not be directing the movie in fact we still don’t have any word on who might grace the director’s chair will disney go with a known quantity along the lines of john favreau or with someone from outside their stable of regular collaborators as they have with chloe zhao and eternals we just don’t know at this point because the movie is still in the scripting stage but we can tell you who’s writing that script one dave callahan you may remember his name from the credits of wonder woman 1984 and a small independent movie called sheng chi in the legend of the 10 rings which we hear is out soon he’s also part of the writing team for the upcoming into the spider verse 2. a pretty exciting resume we’re sure you’ll agree and one that gives us hope for a fun energetic and inventive screenplay we’re only interested in one thing can you tell a storybot can you make us laugh can you make us cry but of course we know what you’re thinking who’s gonna be in the damn thing well again it’s too early for any concrete casting confirmations we’ve heard rumors suggesting that disney would like to cast a non-white hercules following the pattern they’ve set with their upcoming little mermaid remake but you can file that one under hearsay for now however there is a bunch of fun fan cast things that we have to draw attention to idris elba as zeus anyone we’d buy a ticket for that fans have also suggested tom holland for the part of hercules although we wonder if he’s kind of little don’t get us wrong the kid is ripped but hercules should be a big log right we are open to being proven wrong though we were also intrigued by the suggestion of jonathan majors for hades after all he made a pretty convincing villain in loki he might not want to get typecast as the bad guy though oh and how about this ariana grande as megara granted this fan casting seems largely based on her recent performance of the hercules song i won’t say i’m in love for the disney family sing-along but it’s an interesting choice similarly the internet seems to be pushing lizzo as a potential thalia or one of the other muses though again this seems to be because of a recent music video not that she wouldn’t be great of course and if that’s not enough pop star power the legendary jennifer hudson has actually put herself forward as a contender for head muse calliope you know we can see it which of course begs the question when can we see it disney haven’t confirmed a theatrical release date we don’t even know if it’ll be a theatrical proposition or if they’ll make it a disney plus exclusive like lady and the hey remember lady and the that happened but even though we don’t have solid information we can make some educated guesses based purely on the release slots that disney is already earmarked for unnamed live-action projects we would be surprised if the movie appeared before the end of 2022 we’re not betting but we’d probably lean more towards sometime in 2023 disney has staked out march 10th may 26 to july 14th august 11th october 6th and december 15th of that year of course that’s assuming that no huge earth-shaking events happen in the meantime that completely disrupt the normal functioning of society like who knows a pandemic or something but what are the odds of that anyway the final question concerns the movie itself specifically what’s it actually gonna be like a wacky comedy a thrilling adventure a bit of both we have a few cryptic hints to go on here the russo brothers haven’t confirmed whether it’s going to be a musical in fact the suggestion is that they haven’t actually decided that yet obviously that’s a big decision and will have a pretty fundamental effect on what kind of movie we can expect rumors also suggest that this remake isn’t going to be a literal adaptation of the animated movie and we think this is good news one problem that has plagued the disney live action remakes is a fear of doing things differently they’ve often felt too slavishly devoted to the source material with little appetite for risk which makes them feel kind of like karaoke versions of the originals audiences certainly don’t seem to be put off as the box office returns for aladdin beauty and the beast and the lion king will attest but can that enthusiasm last we’re personally in favor of a fresh approach although you have to admit that a live-action version of phil still played by danny devito would be a pretty fantastic addition to this movie now if anyone has the clout to push things in a bolder direction though it is the russo brothers there you go cautious optimism we told you we could do it so we’re getting hercules and at some point we’re getting a lilo in stitch though we fear a cgi stitch will either be too cute or too disgusting so which other disney classics do we want to see in live action well we wouldn’t hate an emperor’s new groove remake
