International Memorial Service

i’m to thee oh lord do we give thanks oh oh hell shalom and good morning to my brothers and sisters in the house of israel in the church of god and saints of christ temple bethel it’s certainly an honor and a privilege to come before you on this auspicious occasion we’re giving thanks to the god of our salvation for all of his many blessings that he has bestowed upon us on our families and on the communities in which we live we ask the lord to be with us in this service and in this service of celebration for our loved ones who have passed away in the house of israel over the past eight months the soldiers in the in the earthly armies who die on the battlefield are many times given military honors to celebrate their service and certainly these soldiers in the army of the lord deserve to be honored and celebrated in a spiritual god-centered tribute and that’s what we are about today we thank the lord for the the gift of these lives the gift of the memories of these our loved ones who have fallen asleep and passed on and god gives gifts like this these these gifts keep on giving because the memories of our loved ones linger with us precious memories oh how how they how they linger how they get us through the tough times song says in the midnight in the midnight hours those precious memories give us comfort and our tradition in the house of israel is to give our loved ones a a celebratory homegoing our tradition is that we gather in the sanctuary and the local pastor or the presiding minister will lead the procession of the family in and will begin the procession with a reading of with the reading of job chapter 14 verses 11 through 14. as the waters fail from the seed it starts and somewhere in that scripture it says if a man die shall he live again that haunting question is asked right at the beginning so let us begin our celebration of course we won’t have the pomp and circumstance the celebratory accouterments that we normally have and of course our purpose here today is to try to make up to the best of our ability for the fact that we were not able to have our usual celebratory homegoing service so we do the best we can we’ll begin as we normally do with the with the procession of the families into the sanctuary with the scripture job chapter 14 verses 11 through 14 to be read by elder timothy hurt elder as the waters fell from the sea and the flood decays and dries up so man lies down i is not for the heavens be no more it shall not awake lord be raised out of their sleep oh that thou art [Music] that thou will keep me secret we will have invocation by elder timothy harris of richmond virginia ella harris sovereign lord of the universe omnipotent creator of the ends of the earth it is written in your holy word that you are able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or even think you are able to keep us from falling despite any obstacle in our paths you are able to present us faultless before the presence of your glory despite our shortcomings omnipotent lord god thou who inhabiteth eternity we humbly approach your divine throne and call upon your holy and sacred name in this our time of sorrow because you are able we again are forced to drink from the bitter chalice of mourning which is made yet more bitter during this global pandemic we are unable to gather together physically lord in your name to offer our collective consolations but lord you are able we are unable to physically wrap our arms of love and compassion around the bereaved families lord but you are able we are unable to envelope the bereaved families with the sweet songs of zion as it was in former times lord but you are able acknowledging our humanly limitations lord we beseech you because of your limitless power your love and your consolation are not contingent on any physical condition your covenant is not made null and void due to the perils of the world you keep covenant to a thousand generations and even keep covenant with those who sleep in the dust there is no temple there is no tabernacle no funeral home chapel that can contain your omni presence so we ask lord that your presence and your consolation be made manifest to the bereaved families wherever they may be infuse this virtual memorial service with the measure of your divine spirit allow the songs that are sung the words that are spoken to penetrate the dark clouds of sorrow lord be with the bereaved in the days the weeks and the months to come allow them to to know that you are with them through their hurt through their pain through siblings and friends who have transitioned from labor to reward we thank you for the souls you allow to be among our ranks those who are called to be saints preachers of righteousness whose testimony was i have not refrained my lips o lord thou knowest singers of mercy and judgment deacons who held the mystery of the faith in pure conscience daughters of jerusalem who live their lives as sisters of mercy allow those of us who are left on these mundane chores to memorialize their service to your work by upholding the banner that they held and waived so courageously allow the work that they have bequeathed to us to be secure in our keeping that we may reaffirm that thou art god by the power of thy might these and all prayers and blessings we ask in thy name and for thy sake praying confidently knowing that thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever amen [Music] [Applause] shall i call the brits [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] yes [Applause] [Laughter] is family and as one family we are together celebrating honoring those who have passed on over the past few months i know it’s not adequate this virtual service to do justice to the celebration that we would have but i’m hoping that the families all of us are enjoying and engaging in the beautiful prayer that we heard from elder timothy harris and these sweet songs of zion and i asked you to think on your loved ones as we go through this virtual service this virtual service is the best we can do but our hearts and our minds are in the right place and the lord lifts up the spirit of the occasion and comforts and guides us and now we move to the second scripture of the day namely psalms chapter 90 which be read by elder samuel eves the first of jacksonville florida elder eaves our scripture is psalms 19. lord thou has been our dwelling place in all generations before the mountains were brought forth however thou hast formed the earth and the world even from everlasting to everlasting thou art god now turneth man to destruction and say it return ye children of men for a thousand years in thy sight i put it yesterday when it is passed and as a watch in the night thou cast them away as with a flood they are as asleep in the morning they are like grass which growth up in the morning it flourishes and growth up in the evening it is cut down and withereth for we are consumed by thy anger and by thy wrath are we troubled thou has set our iniquities before thee our secret sins in the light of thy countenance for all our days are passed away in thy wrath we spend our years as a tale that is told the days of our years are three school years and ten and if by reason of strength they be four score years yet is their strength labor and sorrow for it is soon cut off and we fly away who knows the power of that anger even according to thy fears so is that wrath so teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom return o lord how long and let it repent be concerning thy servants o satisfy us early with thy mercy that we may rejoice and be glad all our days make us glad according to that the days where we endow has afflicted us and the years wherein we have seen evil thy work appear unto thy servants and thy glory unto their children and let the beauty of the lord our god be upon us and establish the other work of our hands upon us yea the work of our hands established our head so in it the reading of the scripture brethren [Applause] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] when the lord shall come in his glory we shall not fall we shall [Music] oh [Applause] arise and holy [Music] [Applause] heard that the everlasting god the lord the creator of the ends of the earth fainted not neither is weary there is no searching for his understanding isaiah 48 and 20. the loss of a loved one is never easy to bear however we can take comfort in knowing that god has sent carla in the hollow of his hand although her physical being has left this earthly scene her spirit and memory is in love is alive and well one may wonder why god called saint carla home so soon but we must be reminded of job when he stated the lord giveth and the lord taketh away death is a painful experience which brings on many emotions and thoughts however she has transitioned from labor to reward and has finished her course i pray that god will give you the strength to carry on in the days weeks months and years to come finally the veil of sorrow felt today may seem overwhelming but the fact still remains that there is nothing that god and time cannot heal her sweet spirit will be missed and the tears that flow today were eventually transformed to joy and gladness whenever we hear the name of saint carlos abandoning may the god of our salvation continue to keep us all in the hollow of his hands humbly engaging stories we are so thankful that the lord let us hear brother god for nearly 92 years as one of the gate city vocal heirs brother god was a huge level of music and he just enjoyed talking about the days that the vocal heirs traveled the gospel circuit as an opening act for such music legends as sam cook and the soul stirs the mighty clouds of joy and the dixie hummingbirds the troxler [Music] [Applause] yes [Applause] um is that it you’re not doing the africa we’re not doing the african thanking the lord for this service this service of celebration this service of love and comfort for the families of those of our loved ones who have passed away over the past eight months we certainly thank the lord for being so good to us to give us the benefit of these wonderful beautiful lives and we sanctify his name as the ceremony says we sanctify his name thinking and praising his holy and glorious name for the gift of these beautiful lives we cannot do anything for our loved ones at this point other than love them and remember them but we can do one final tribute to them and that is to take up the battle that they fought during their lives to take up the blood-stained banner as the song saying and continue the good things that they did continue the work that they did continue the songs that they say the sermons they preached the good will the acts of charity that they gave that we can do and in that way they will live on in our lives oh we thank the lord for these these sweet these sweet memories for these these memories will bless us in the days to come we’ll always have them and when the and when the times get tough and when we become sad and try to sink back into a state of mourning we just conjure up those beautiful memories of those those smiles those acts of charity those loving persons that we remember and they will boy us up and help us to continue to go on our way we have a number of our loved ones who passed away on the continent of africa but and there were there were many of them i think there were about um how many um about 13 or so of them but we were not able to gather their condolences and i will give a general condolence for our loved ones in africa who passed away and in a future setting we will give condolences for those for those of our african brothers and sisters who have passed on it’s not the it’s not the sanctuary service that we normally have but we’re doing the best we can our hearts and our spirits are making up for the inadequacies that we have in honoring these our loved ones who have passed on and i take this opportunity to extend my love and my concern and my comfort and my condolence to all of the families indeed to all of us for for indeed the prophet brought us all together in one family and we all joy together and we all suffer together we all grieve together and we all triumph we all are triumphant together as we think on the beauty of these lives and we thank the god of our salvation for giving us this gift and as i said before the lord gives a gift that keeps on giving we keep on enjoying the memories of these loved ones we keep on conjuring up the the past their their past actions so thank the lord for these sweet souls that we honor today and at this time we have a selection before the w we’re now we’re now prepared to receive the eulogy i don’t envy the eulogist because he has to give a eulogy for 40 people but he’ll do it in the spirit of prophecy and we as a family will understand the inadequacy of eulogizing adequately all of our loved ones so let us have a selection now and prepare for the eulogy to be given by elder joseph denson the first of belleville virginia [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] shall be is [Music] shall we [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] was [Music] [Applause] [Music] one and [Music] [Music] yay [Applause] [Music] [Music] that was [Music] under the house of israel giving praise and honor to the almighty god for his favor to the children of men this god who is from everlasting to everlasting god before the beginning of time god after the expiration of time i’m talking about the god who is not fenced in by time and operates outside of the boundaries of eternity the alpha and the omega the beginning and the end he is our shelter in time of storm he is our light and our salvation and because of his saving power because of what this god has done he is equated to water in dry places he’s called bread in a starving land he is my all and all my savior and my god he is the god who opens doors that none can shut and he shuts doors that none are able to open he is the rewarder of righteous pursuits the inexhaustible source of blessings undeserved this compassionate being our comforter in time of sorrow and our protector from the storm the wellspring of goodness and mercy the redeemer of the downtrodden he remembers the forgotten ones and gives new direction to those who are lost because of his compassion and saving grace some say he’s my rock and shelter and he holds me in his hands to this god we offer more than just praise more than just honor we bless his holy and righteous name saying hallelujah salvation and glory honor and power beyond to our god to the marie families represented here indeed the entire house of israel we all reside in the seat of sorrow this morning this spiritual family whose faith is strong enough to know and understand that earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal recognizing the chief rabbi of the church of god and saints of christ rabbi philip e mcneal grandfather abraham our father and our friend our comforter and confidant this teaching high priest who keeps us on the path of an intimate relationship with our god for the ministerial body saints friends well-wishers i greet you all with all hell our purpose here today is to give praise to our god for 40 precious sets of footprints in the sands of time who passed this life between december of 2020 and july of 2021 25 souls from 14 tabernacles in the united states and 15 pilgrims on this journey called life from three districts in the continent of africa who were these folks personally i don’t know them all but i can say with a great degree of certitude that they were elders deacons grand officers district offices choir members sabbath school scholars jubilee singers there were composers vital willing workers wise sages mothers fathers and mother figures that some of us needed they were kind and gentle spirits trusted brother or sister that we used when when we needed a shoulder to cry on sons daughters or grandchildren that were the apple of our eye the father that saved you when you could not save yourself and the mother that loved you no matter what we are here to give praise to our god for these souls that we pay homage to here today 40 precious gifts 40 treasured personalities that gave joy and purpose to our lives we thank the eternal one for introducing into our existence these hallowed souls whether they were related to us by blood or by spiritual affiliation each and every one has proven to be a cherished gift from the almighty and merciful god of our fathers every once in a while we encounter one that is special every once in a while we clay vessels get to rub shoulders with a special vessel every once in a while the omnipotent god graces us to be acquainted with a distinctively unique being we had these distinctive acquaintances and encountered 40 exceptional lives worth living in the consecrated individuals we are remembering here today the scripture for this service is a familiar one and i promise you i will not be long it’s taken from the book of revelation the 14th chapter and the 13th verse and it reads and i heard a voice from heaven saying unto me right blessed are the dead which die in the lord from henceforth yea said the spirit that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them i always have difficulty figuring out a theme for these i’ll let you pick your own but i’ll look just quickly at what will follow you there are great incentives in our text to live a good decent wholesome and spiritual life a god-centered life a life of good deeds a life of assisting and supporting others a life of being an example of righteousness striving toward the mark of perfection one incentive is this even in death you will be blessed provided you have died in the lord or as i prefer to say you have lived for the lord what do i mean by you have having lived for the lord allow me to share one scripture out of many that could have been chosen to make this point jesus was challenged on one occasion to answer the question what is the greatest commandment now jesus took two verses from the hebrew scriptures he used deuteronomy 6 5 and thou shalt love the lord thy god with all thine heart and with all thy soul and with all thy might and he used leviticus 19 18. thou shalt not avenge nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself i am the lord and he synthesized them into what became known as the great commandment as recorded in matthew 22 verse 7 and 30 through 40. thou shalt love the lord thy god with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind this is the first and great commandment and the second is like unto it thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets this scripture clearly identifies that we have a duty and responsibility toward our god and our fellow man satisfying this requirement places one in the select category of living for the lord so that when one finishes his or her course and goes the way of all flesh they are blessed to die in the lord our blessed loved ones live for the lord therefore they effectively have died in the lord if you’re going to live for god you must love him with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and you must it’s not optional you must love your neighbor as yourself scripture says that you must fear god and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man our dearly departed members our highly favored and cherished loved ones lived this truth they loved god they loved the church of god they loved their pastor grandfather abraham and they treated everyone with the greatest respect love and dignity even down to a little child you know you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat children because even though they were distinctive and very different individuals they were all spiritually grounded to the same unifying principle thou shalt love the second incentive alluded to in our text is that your works will follow you the deeds that you do in this body while on this earth good or bad kind or hurtful constructive or destructive positive or negative righteous or wicked wise or foolish unifying or divisive they will follow you and you will have to give an account for all of those evil wicked nasty hurtful cruel and shameful activities and actions furthermore what you do in this life in this mortal clay enclosure it outlives you folks will talk about things that you did long after you’re gone what you do for others or to others has a long shelf life and i know that these precious souls like many of us did not experience a bit of rose’s existence i know he had some good days i know she had some hills to climb they probably had some weary days and many a sleepless night and i can just imagine that when one or another of them contemplated their plight and examined their situation alphabetized and categorized his problems versus her blessings weighed in the balance the ups and the downs juxtaposed life’s setbacks against god’s goodness i can just imagine that he wrapped himself that she wrapped herself in their arms and began to rock themselves and possibly overcame the wave of anxiety rising within their soul by saying but when i look around and think things over all of my good days outweigh all of my bad days i won’t complain and family that conclusion is a god-centered conclusion as a result of leaning on the lord trusting in the lord with all thy heart and leaning not to one’s own understanding these precious entities that we are talking about here today in all their ways they acknowledged god and we should learn from their lives that the almighty god directed their path and if he directed their path for what they did god is true to his promise he will direct our paths they died in the lord because they lived for the lord that conclusion is drawn from the resources of a lifetime of walking in lockstep but the spirit of the almighty god and believing in and following god’s prophet when you allow yourself to be guided by god’s spirit his spirit will fill you with love it’ll fill you with joy fill you with peace and fill you with happiness pain though a constant companion is tolerated with god’s love discomfort that unwelcome intruder vanishes with god’s joy sickness an unwanted tenet of the mind or body that robs one of their strength is but light affliction when god gives you peace you will find yourself enrapt in perfect peace because your mind the seat of the intellect the essence of your being the temple in which god dwells is stayed on god our sainted family members our treasured brothers and sisters those whom we honor here today are now in the loving arms of the father and in good stead they fought the good fight they finished their course and they kept the faith they now qualified to echo the apostle paul who said henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the lord the righteous judge shall give me at that day the bible says in the book of malachi and our sainted loved ones believed that if they lived a god-centered life if they kept the testimonies of god kept the commandments of god if they loved their fellow man with a pure heart that god would reward them with a blessing that only he could give this is what malachi 3 17 says and they shall be mine saith the lord of hosts in that day when i make up my jewels god’s precious jewels are those who live a sanctified life whose life was full of good works and their works are now following them and whose testimonies i believe can be captured in these words familiar to most of you i’m going to do all the commandments of god and they shall be mine and do all the commandments of prophet william as crowding and they shall be mine i’m going to love all my love and obey my pastor which is grandfather abraham and they shall be mine i’m going to love all my brothers and sisters with a pure heart and they shall be mine and pay all of my offerings in the church of god and saints of christ and they shall be mine saith the lord and the almighty god will say to them in that day i will ransom them from the power of the grave family be not discouraged god is not marked whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap our dear loved ones sold correctly and they will reap bountifully i’m encouraged by the lives represented here today because they trusted in god and not only that they taught others to do likewise therefore i say take your rest my dear brothers my dear sisters well done thou good and faithful servant thou has been faithful over a few things i will make the ruler over many things enter thou into the joy of thy lord may the god of our salvation bless and keep each and every one of us in the hollow of his hands is my prayer amen oh oh [Applause] is amen let us now have closing remarks from ella james holly of chicago illinois 126th song it says the lord hath done great things for them the lord hath done great things for us whereof we are glad yes the lord has done great things for them and we remember them today we remember them always the lord has done great things for them brought them through many trials in their life show them that god is able to carry them through when they had no way on their own god has done great things for them and surely god has done great things for us whereof we are glad he’s blessed us to keep their memory he’s blessed us to have so many memories of joy from our time with them that we are glad and it also says in that 126th psalm they that sow in tears shall reap enjoy i’m saying carry their bones from here to my leader to our leader after giving praise to god i’m saying to the man of god chief rabbi philip eugene mcneill grandfather abraham i thank you for granting us this opportunity to comfort and be comforted to the local pastors of belleville elder denson and elder locke who are there where many of our loved ones have found their resting place and to all the church of god and saints of christ and all who walk by faith all who grieve shalom alaikum i want to acknowledge the contributors all those who contributed to this memorial those seen in the service and those unseen who prepared who wrote condolences who gathered pictures you have done a great service now i’m thankful for that message from elder denson and i say we all stand today as mourners we all hold hands today as family death has a sting and also a numbness and a hollow place in us the gap in time that uh was always filled with conversation or weekly traditions like sunday brunch we know that absence is there and some of us have lost loved ones not mentioned in this service like me last month i went to alaska to officiate and eulogize my wife’s mother maria mark and just during the service i got a message that my father who has been in a fight for his life since last week was just moved back to icu and so my sisters and i are going through that roller coaster so yes we are comforters who need comfort at this time and my prayer is that this service helps you lift up your head and go forth with purpose lift up your head and go forth with purpose in genesis chapter 50 i want to give us this genesis chapter 50 verse 5 and 20. it says there then joseph took an oath of the children of israel saying god will surely visit you and you shall carry my bones from here i’m thankful for the message from joseph elder joseph denson and i have a message from this joseph in the bible don’t stay at the place where they finished their race don’t lay your armor down at the mark where they rested from their labor their works follow them by how you follow through don’t make a cave for yourself at their grave don’t stay there don’t stay here see there’s a mantle to pick up and a river for us to cross carry their bones from here not talking about the uh bones of a connected uh what they call connective tissue right with calcium phosphate and special cells not talking about that bone i’m saying the bones of a connective spirit reinforced with memories and with wisdom and with purpose from them is what will carry to our destinations today and tomorrow moses he wasn’t joseph but he had the connective spirit joseph i’m sorry joshua wasn’t moses but he had the connective spirit and now rabbi by juarcus crowdy junior wasn’t prophet william s crowdy but he had the connective spirit and our leader today is not rabbi j walker’s crowdy junior but i know and i want you to know that chief rabbi phillip eugene mcneill grandfather abraham has the connective spirit and now we have a river to cross here comes the relevance to us elder denson asked what will follow you our loved ones your loved ones who we’ve said goodbye to um you love them you know that that um these kings and these queens they had a purpose right and i’m saying as god was with them god will surely visit you as joseph said to the future generations god will surely visit you carry their bones from here seeking to fulfill your purpose go go on keep on going further on still go further count the milestones one by one say i’m going to run this race with patience to see what the end will be carry their bones carry their bones carry their bones from here amen amen and amen i’m thanking the lord for this memorial service thanking the lord for the songs of zion that we heard from the scriptures that were read and for these fine sermons these fine sermons of of comfort and love and tribute to those of our loved ones who have transitioned to another level of life john the revelator in his in his exquisite symbolism said on one occasion that i saw i looked and lo a lamb stood on mount zion and with him 144 000 having their fa having their father’s name in their foreheads prophet williams on this crowd of gods prophet said on one occasion that he had come to gather the 000 these of course this is symbolism this is spiritual symbolism and these 144 000 according to the sang scripture new song before the throne of god and nobody and he said nobody could learn that song the script said nobody can learn that song except the 144 000 that were redeemed by god himself in my comforting message to the families to to us the families of those who have gone on i say that your loved ones and our loved ones have joined that congregation of the 144 000 having their father’s name written in their forehead singing a new song singing a joyful and happy new song before the throne of god can you picture your loved one now joyful joining the group of those who have been redeemed by god himself keep that image in your mind as you as you go forward and certainly the work that they have done my advice to you and to me is to take up the blood-stained banner that they carried so well and carried so high and let us continue the work of the law so that we one day can join that congregation of 144 thousand at this time we will have a a medley of songs while we take one final look at the images of our loved ones let us have the medley [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and [Applause] oh [Music] oh oh [Music] oh foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] every oh [Music] oh [Music] all the consolation to the families of those of our loved ones who have transitioned i like to say to another level of life and i hope that you will as as you think on your loved ones just think on the beautiful smiles on those faces as we went through that melody think of the joy the good times the glad tidings that you enjoyed with your loved ones let that be the final image of this service assured of the fact that these our loved ones have joined that chorus of 144 000 who are praising thanking glorifying the god of our salvation singing a new song that nobody else can sing except those of the redeemed who walk therein with their father and now unto him that
