Is Northern Ireland Benefiting At the UK’s Expense Over Brexit?

[Applause] hi guys so brexit is providing many opportunities at the moment the problem is that brexiteers promised benefits that would be for britain but since the end of the brexit transition period and even before that the positives of brexit seem to be going to the eu countries not to great britain well i covered before how trade has increased between the republic of ireland and northern ireland there is now a realization in the business communities north and south that when it comes to trade a new ireland is emerging while trade between the two parts of the island has been strong and always so brexit has gone over and above speeding up the real shift away from great britain goods moving from northern ireland to the republic of ireland have increased by 77 percent since the end of the brexit transition period while exports the other way from the republic of ireland to northern ireland has increased by 43 percent this is according to the irish central statistics office because of the northern iron protocol trading goods with great britain is subject to checks at the port of entry now while northern ireland is part of the uk customs territory it also has free access to the eu single market once again when it comes to goods therefore there are zero checks on goods moving between north and south and vice versa while the brexit supporting dup has welcomed news of increased sales it has warned against a shift from great britain to the eu or the republic of ireland the northern ireland economy minister gordon lyons expressed concern with the move away from trade with the rest of the uk and he said of gb northern ireland’s most important market by volume and value the protocol creates a barrier and it is clearly diverting trade the government has made the right noises but we continue to press for real change which removes the border in the irish sea and allow unfettered trade within the united kingdom the problem with this stance is that it’s attempting to undo the reality on the ground northern armed businesses have taken a pragmatic approach to the northern armed protocol while they’re not happy with the effects brexit is having on their ability to operate most are thankful to have the protocol as opposed to what they see other businesses in the rest of the uk facing the chief executive of manufacturing northern ireland stephen kelly described how both customers and suppliers have accepted the inevitability of live post brexit he said and i quote what is surprising us and probably most people is the quantum of that change there’s basically nearly 800 million euros worth of additional sales of northern ireland goods into the republic of ireland in the first six months of this year this is enormous he went on it proves that market access is as critical for trade as anything else and it also shows that the protocol does provide opportunities for northern armed producers the challenge we have is that we won’t know the quantum of the disruption on trade from britain into northern ireland for at least another year and adoptedly it’s clear from manufacturers and indeed others in business in the north that they’ve been scrambling to try and continue their own continuity of supply as life has become too difficult to bring goods from britain the csl data clearly demonstrates that northern ireland exporters are benefiting from their position as a result of the northern ireland protocol if northern ireland had left the eu with the rest of britain there would likely have been a hard border on the island of ireland and this would have had massively negative effects on all ireland trade the people of northern ireland voted against brexit and they are attempting to make the best of a bad situation there was a feeling that things would get worse much worse following the end of the brexit transition period but northern ireland is thanks to the protocol benefiting to a certain extent at the expense of the rest of the uk inward investment has increased in ways it would not have even if brexit hadn’t happened ironically brexit in the long term may be one of the greatest things to happen to northern ireland considering the level of support it has currently many people have asked me about the likelihood of a united ireland and i’ve always been extremely conservative in my predictions but it does seem that increased trade and prosperity for northern ireland will no doubt encourage more people who are sitting on the fence to perhaps jump on board a united iron bandwagon boris johnson and brexit seem to be the greatest catalysts at the moment driving both businesses and the people of northern ireland to consider an all ireland trading block and a slow but steady shift away from great britain let me know in the
