King of Kings Lutheran Church Gardner, KS – Joyful Praise Service – August 29, 2021 10:30a Service

[Music] this so [Music] so [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music] good morning we celebrate this 14th sunday after pentecost as our heavenly father continues to shine his grace and goodness among us is his dear people like to welcome our friends who are with us also our friends who are with us online as well as we celebrate god’s blessings those who are here please we encourage you to fill the information card you find there in your worship folder so these cards help us our church office not only to keep more accurate records but also any changes or updates for directory or activities again they fill them out placing the offering plate you’ll notice there’s one plate on each side on your way up for communion also there’s one plate in the back in case we forget now as a reminder about communion we are continuing our social distance scenes as we come up as families leaving a little space between families and we’re doing a continual communion so as we come up receive the lord’s body and blood have your prayer reflection time and return back to your seats and we’ll go through we’ll have one common dismissal after everyone has been communed and if it sounds a little confusing don’t worry just watch people in front of you and life goes very quickly also reminder that we are not sanitizing the community rails between tables for obvious reasons also cdc says it’s not that big of an issue there it’s a very low risk but again as you do come up if you want to kneel at the communion rail wonderful if you want to remain standing at the communion rail wonderful it’s up to you either way again receive god’s blessings for that begin to return back to our seat to one commonest missile after everyone has been communed this is a quick reminder we have their annual family picnic coming up september 12th they’re at veterans park we think our ladies are going to hosting and getting that going and getting them ready for us also a reminder that as we are kind of back in full steam again we are looking at rejoining our handballs and then we want to thank tamika kind of came up with a nice creative way of being able to do that we do it in good groups of four six etcetera so nice small groups and nice thing about it is is if you want to help out with the handballs or play the handballs you don’t have to sign up for the whole year so we’re kind of doing it as like a month by month type of thing so therefore in up sheet on the other side of the restroom there again you’re signing up simply for one week or one month that way learning a song instead of for the whole season that way so hopefully they’ll help out and again being able to enhance our worship as jessica’s enhancing our worship also today um helping us hear god’s blessing to be able to reflect upon that also um as we continue our ministry we don’t forget our food pantry being able to help out with those items as well and one let’s see one final thing after our worship service you’re gonna hang around for a few minutes we’ll be having our youth uh auction as we know the national gathering is coming up next summer again every three years the lutheran church missouri synod gets together and they have an annual national gathering about 30 000 high school kids gathering together from around the country and next summer it will be in houston texas as a part of our fundraising to help subsidize some of those costs is that our youth will be auctioning themselves off for various items so we whatever their gifts or talents are or lack thereof again wonderful blessing to be able to bid on those things i think the bidding starts like 20 and i think somebody went up to 150 already at the eight o’clock service there so again it’s a nice fun way to get some uh projects done pet sitting etc personal shopping was one of the main ones i saw up there so you know you can buy jackson right or the gals there personal shopping it’s a wonderful blessing that way but again we look forward to having that immediately following our worship service so with that let us begin with why we are here celebrating god’s blessings with our opening hymn stand up stand up for jesus and um i know we’re lutherans and we like to sit for the first couple stanzas but you know it’s kind of bad sitting during singing stand up for jesus right so let us rise [Music] [Music] um [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] yes [Music] oh [Music] so [Music] so [Music] we remember our baptism into the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen answer me when i call to you o my righteous god today jesus encourages us to listen to his words and to put them into practice let us reflect on those times and we have not put the words of god into practices in our lives i confess to you heavenly father and before my brothers and sisters in the body of christ that i have sinned against you and my thoughts words and actions i do not always honor your call to love you with all my heart soul mind and strength i falter in loving others as you have loved me i plead for forgiveness for the sake of jesus christ give me your holy spirit that i may listen to your words and put them into practice god is merciful our heavenly father has sent his son into our world clothed him in the flesh and blood of humanity and in his glorious resurrection our lord assures us of forgiveness and life as your called an ordained servant of the word i announce god’s grace to each of you and in the joyful obedience to the command and promise of our lord himself i forgive you all of your sins the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirits amen the lord be with you let us pray almighty god our loving father you have chosen us to be your children and have given us the gift of eternal life through faith in your son jesus give us the full armor of faith to worship you in spirits and in truth shape our lives to your will and remove everything from us that hinders our christian service through jesus christ your son our lord who lives and reigns with you in the holy spirit one god now and forever amen our first lesson for today is from the book of deuteronomy chapter 4 verses 1 and 2 and 6 seven and eight here now israel the decrees and laws i am about to teach you follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the lord the god of your fathers is giving you do not add to what i command you and do not subtract from it but keep the commands of the lord your god that i give you observe them carefully for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations who will hear about all these decrees and say surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people what other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way our lord our god is near us whenever we pray to him and what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws i am setting before you today only be careful and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live teach them to your children and to their children after them this is the word of the lord [Music] my [Music] my [Music] so [Music] our we do come to him and remembering the refrain of the song that was just played i come i come the word of the lord in ephesians chapter 6. finally be strong in the lord and in his mighty power put on the full armor of god so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes for our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers against the authorities against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms therefore put on the full armor of god so that when the day of evil comes you may be able to stand your ground and after you have done everything to stand stand firm then with the belt of truth buckled around your waist with the breastplate of righteousness in place and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace in addition to all this take up the sea shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit which is the word of god and pray in the spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests with this in mind be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints pray also for me that whenever i open my mouth words may be given me so that i will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel for which i am an ambassador in chains pray that i may declare it fearlessly as i should this is the word of the lord out of respect for the gospel we rise for the reading of the life of christ the holy gospel going to saint mark the seventh chapter glory to you again jesus called the crowd to him and said listen to me everyone and understand this nothing outside a man can make him unclean by going into him rather it is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean after he had left the crowd and entered the house his disciples asked him about this parable are you so dull he asked don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him unclean for it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach and then out of his body saying this jesus declared all foods clean he went on what comes out of a man is what makes him unclean for from within out of man’s hearts come evil thoughts sexual immorality theft murder adultery greed malice deceit lewdness envy slander arrogance and folly all these evils come from inside and make a man unclean this is the gospel of the lord thanks to you oh christ and the congregation may be assumed by the truth report for the children’s message good morning what are we with me today a deck of cards who likes playing cards yep how about you guys want to play some pinical together you know how to play pinnacle your mom does how how about a nice game of pitch you don’t know pitch either how about euchre you know euchre i know a fun one how about sheepshead you ever played sheepshead before there’s a lot of different games there but but in order to play any of those games what do you have to know what do you have to know in order to play any game well how to shuffle right that kind of helps right how to play right we have to know the rules don’t we and somebody do we like rules yeah sometimes rules are bummer aren’t they i mean at school you have rules right and at home you have rules and even going to church there’s rules and how we ride in the car and how we play everything seems to have rules kind of a bummer but the rules actually are kind of a good thing too aren’t they because once we know the rules and we know what we’re supposed to do and how we’re supposed to play it’s a lot of fun isn’t it and we know that we’re all playing fair right and help each other out there so whether it’s a card game right or a board game or maybe outside playing softball or soccer whatever it might be knowing those rules and how we play how we all get along so much better and that’s what jesus reminds us that even talk about some rules we call what commandments right that we know those things how we live and how we serve god and thank him and how we live with each other those wonderful rules about what being nice right and showing respect right and helping others out and being able to forgive all those wonderful things there the great things we call him rules right but a great way of life and living under his care home speaking about our rules what’s my rule about dum dums one there you go we continue wait we have a peaceful moment back there with us aaron we continue with the hem of the day [Music] foreign [Music] so grace and peace be to you from god our father our lord and savior jesus christ amen today we continue our wonderful food fest journey there celebrating god’s blessings among us during the month of august we began with the feeding of the multitudes we looked at comfort food and and then courage food and then snack food last week tradition food today we’re going to end with fast food the thing about fast food kind of just makes you hungry just thinking about it doesn’t it right about now a wonderful food fest frenzy we’ve had became a jesus feeding the multitudes there and and so many people wanting and wanting that comfort without the comforter now jesus continued to share that message about the courage for the disciples out on the boat by themselves or elijah running for his life how god gives us that spiritual food that bread of life to get us through that journey knowing that we cannot do it ourselves and then we talked about snack foods how god gives us that daily bread not simply about getting to heaven but life today here and now with brothers and sisters each week going out into the classrooms into our hallways all those wonderful ways of responding to that blessing and then last week we looked at tradition food found out that traditions are not a bad things tradition can be quite the good thing can’t they being able to know how we live in response to god’s blessing how we live together as a family yet so oftentimes we start creating our own traditions we start creating laws and judgments where god doesn’t go there so today we’re going to look at fast food i’m thinking about those wonderful blessings there first off how many of you had a nice wholesome breakfast this morning i mean you know bacon and eggs right or maybe some sausage some hash browns some some toast sitting there nice nice cool glass of orange juice nice warm cup of coffee isn’t that how all you guys started today how many started driving by burger king or mcdonald’s and they started drooling right there right maybe a little breakfast bar nice little snack it gets tough sometimes doesn’t it because those fast foods are so inviting aren’t they thinking about fast food quizzes easy quiz for you what’s the top two ingredients in every fast food sugar and salt isn’t it because as long as we make it sweet enough and we make it salty enough right spicy enough we’ll eat it we’ll enjoy it we’ll begin to crave it and that’s where sometimes as the world starts to come to us but jesus reminds disciples in his day and hours about we are supposed to be people in the world but not of the world the food and life and living are all these wonderful things but it’s how we live those things and how we respond to it now so many times we think about those things coming after us versus jesus reminds us it’s from the heart isn’t it jesus wants to offer a soul food in a stomach food society an instant gratification society it’s not just about the feeding but i am the bread of life this is my body this is my blood given and shed for you and that strength in a fast food society right a stomach food a gratification society how we live in response to those blessings amongst us kind of thinking about that realize today’s tyler ringel’s birthday and she wasn’t here this morning so we’ll have to text her you know she’s at college now right but remember those early days of the pandemic when just like restaurants and everything else was shut down we too were and how we had to try to create the new ways of being able to reach out and adapting how we started doing that milan son media and those first sundays were a little awkward and the sound was off and then step by step we got a little better oh tyler logan would do the lessons zach would come up right light the candles and and we started having pictures on the pew cushion make things a little more comfy and slowly we got back together again but how we walked through that life from simply casual dining then we went to drive through remember that first palm sunday that first easter been able to have our our parking lot processional be able to come through and receive our our lord’s body and blood that living bread from heaven and that little blessing that little devotion time together and being able to wave at our brothers and sisters let’s remind us no matter what comes our way we can still gather as god’s people to be fed by his word and by that message that we go on but it’s not simply about the meal but what about the motives it’s about getting together as brothers and sisters in christ and be able to share and celebrate that and console each other with that blessing that’s why we immediately come and gather back together isn’t it some of our struggles now as far as even getting back together now some for for good reasons right or not able to join us maybe some are traveling or work related but we also find out that sometimes those moldings are not always god centered sometimes it’s a little easier to sit on the couch from tuesday afternoon and watch the service isn’t it instead of coming and gathering as the body of christ or being able to get together with our co-workers and with our family and with those friends and those friendships that it’s more simply about being fed us about being able to be fed have those dinners those meals together to be that body of christ together how do we put it last week with tradition sometimes we let religion right replace relationships that sometimes as long as we just do this or don’t do that that’s all we have to do that life together in the family is about those relationships and why we get together to share and celebrate and console together as that body of christ and that’s what we gather once again today seeing that blessing and that feeding among us last week we talked about grandma theology remember that two things grandma taught us right was what please and thank you wasn’t it that’s how we worship we get together please lord forgive me for this past week forgive those sins forgive those failures forgive those fears and then thank you for those blessings thank you for that family thank you for that strengthening thank you for that forgiveness thank you for that peace and that hope that you provide for us maybe the other way looking at it is mary and martha theology some of you remember mary and martha two sisters there coming helping serving jesus and mary was always there at his feet right listening to that devotion and hearing those words and and martha was always in the kitchen working away and serving that’s kind of our theology too isn’t it first we gather to hear that word to share that word and then we go out and to be that word first we are believers and as we believe in response we are do leavers and how many times we get that backwards don’t we it’s about who we are and whose we are to be able to go out and share and to show that to the world around us maybe keeping our food theology i was thinking about this how about this we are called to be crockpot christians in a microwave world that’s my sermon summary for today remember croc but who was a crock pot right yeah i meant right you put all those raw ingredients in there right throw the seasoning in there and put the lid on it turn it on slow and you go to work and right and you come back six eight hours later and you walk in the house it smells like grandma doesn’t it smells like heaven doesn’t it that’s what we are called to allow god to simmer all those guardians all the gifts all those abilities together to be that wonderful fragrant aroma to the world around us because for so many people they’re living in a microwave world aren’t they and we go from frozen to steaming hot in two minutes and it’s convenient and it’s fast but where’s the flavor where’s the texture where’s that aroma that we celebrate maybe back in jesus day we could be crock pot christian but today’s life a little more sophisticated and a little more faster pace so i thought about how about this how about being air fryer in faith right who got an air fryer during the pandemic right yeah i see everybody’s like okay i bought one and right they’re great aren’t they i mean it’s all the same ingredients we just cook them a little faster don’t we or how about an instant pot who’s got the ins right it’s what a crock pot on steroids isn’t it i mean instead of six hours it’s 60 minutes isn’t it and then what you get what you pop the little top there right and let that steam right and the house still smells wonderful doesn’t it then life kind of feel like crock pot and rinse the pot life today all those pressures being built upon us right and all that heat and all those struggles and isn’t that why we gather in church and for our devotional time and our family time right just to allow the holy spirit to kind of let some of that steam out and let out some of the god’s aroma in our lives that’s the joy that we celebrate in this fast food fast-paced society to allow god to calm us down and when that steam does rise it builds up to be able to release it and celebrate those blessings among us paul concludes his letter to the ephesians talk about the the armor of christ right maybe keeping our our food the maybe the ingredients of christian life and living thinking that first ingredient right is that belt of truth that we know who and whose we are we know where we stand right and wrong sin and grace and forgiveness and joy and those things coming to us i believe in god the father almighty maker creator sustainer of his creation and in jesus christ his son who saw our sin and saw our suffering and saw our separation and as as paul would say submitted to the father willingly came and took our sin and took that pain and took that brokenness to the cross and that easter tomb on our behalf we believe we know we have a holy spirit guiding us and guarding us and keeping us in that wonderful faith then he goes on to what the breastplate of righteousness righteousness you and i are holy righteous in god’s sight through the waters of baptism we are his children say it with me i’m a child of god that’s our breastplate that’s what keeps us and guards us next we get the gospel sandals of peace the gospel sandals of peace that god calls us to go out these doors and share that good news of god’s peace and the pandemic and all the problems right and all the pressures that are out there we get to share god’s peace say it with me god’s got this god and i don’t know what your this is but we all have this don’t we that’s the gospel peace that comes to us through his word finally what that shield of faith that when satan and ourselves and all those voices out there society tries to shoot those flaming arrows if we’re not good enough or we’re not strong enough right to guard and keep us in that faith the helmet of salvation what’s the purpose of a helmet it’s to protect our heads isn’t it from all those voices inside or all those voices outside or those times when we fall and we have those accidents and we do stumble and sin to protect us from those spiritual concussions that we are healed through our savior finally we get to the offensive that sword of the spirit that sword of spirit to cut through all that stuff out there to cut through the sin cut through all those voices cut through our own fears a joy of knowing simply who and whose we are in christ jesus that’s the joys we gather and we start transforming all this fast food in our lives into what take home food isn’t it that we gather for one hour fast food of hearing god’s word and receiving that blessing and receiving that sacrament to take it home to our family or take it home to our neighborhoods or our classrooms and the best thing about it is you remember those field trips as kids right all those lunches put together all those lunches had what all those different names written on it right all those different dietary restrictions or where you go out and you buy your food and some has what little extra pickles or some have no mail right the great joy that our heavenly father when he prepares that’s fast food that take on food for us first he has our name on it doesn’t he he knows our name and has us labeled and better yet he has the perfect portion in there that portion of peace and that portion of forgiveness or that portion of patience right that portion of hope say it with me god’s got this but even better yet god’s got me god’s got me and let’s celebrate that in the words the apostles creed we rise we profess i believe in god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our word who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of god the father almighty from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead and then i believe in the holy spirit the holy christian church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting amen lord god jesus said that he came so we might have life and and have it abundantly that we come and praise you and thank you for his purpose in coming and we praise you and thank you that we might indeed experience that fullness of that life that he has promised take from us o lord all those things that get in the way of our relationship with you our our pride and self certainty our doubts and our fear all those things that come from our human nature that that blind us to the wonders of your presence and the glory of what you are doing in our midst lord in your mercy and lord we thank you for the refreshing wind of your spirit for how you breathe into us new life and and new hope and lead us to new understandings in you we find wholeness for both body and soul we pray now our lord that this wholeness may not only grow within us but that it might enter into and transform the lives of those listed in our prayer ministry in search those that we name before you at this time we lift him up oh lord and we also lift up those situations and and those individuals in thanksgiving with prayers of intercession lord in lord our god king of all creation for you feed and sustain all that you have made most especially do you grant us all that we need for these bodies in this life for this we offer you thanks and praise but most of all we worship you for the love revealed to us in christ jesus our savior and by his death and resurrection you open our hearts and hands to receive this precious gift and and through your spirit grant us the ability to witness the blessings of this gift in our daily lives hear us now as we boldly call you father and pray together as jesus has taught our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever amen our lord jesus christ the night that he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to the disciples saying take eat this is my body which is given for you this dude in remembrance of me the same way also after supper and when he had given thanks he took the cup and gave it to them saying drink of it all of you this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins this does often had you drink it in remembrance of me and the peace of the lord be with you always [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] yes [Music] so [Music] foreign [Music] wow [Music] hmm [Music] um [Music] and now may this blessing the true blind blood of our risen lord strengthen and preserve you in true faith until light everlasting let us pray merciful father you have fed us on the bread of heaven your own son jesus christ our lord that he is your word made flesh and in him is redemption and all our hope armist with that no temptation may overwhelm us equip us that we may proclaim him as the only way truth and life to the whole world we ask this through jesus christ your son our lord who lives and reigns with you in the holy spirit one god now and forever amen in our faith challenge this week let’s see we’ve had twinkies and triscuits and trail mitts and what was last week turkeys right so for this week maybe whatever food god provides just be a crockpot put it all together and be that sweet aroma to the world around you let in the lord bless you and keep you lord make his face shine upon you be gracious unto you lord look upon you with favor and grant you peace [Music] [Music] foreign [Music]
