Kremlin rejects Biden’s words about Russia, nuclear weapons & oil

portable tv come watch with me talks resumed in geneva between russia and the u.s senior officials both looking to ease tensions between the world’s two biggest nuclear powers with current relations at its lowest point since the cold war russia looking to broaden those talks to include britain and france while the u.s delegation looking to bring china into the discussion so here to discuss with us former u.s marine corps intelligence officer turned u.n weapons inspector and contributor to rt.com our friend scott ritter scott first can you touch on the current state of u.s russia relations on the issues of of arms and and the new start treaty can you set the stage for us here about where we’re at well i think it’s important to point out that as bad as relations are between the united states and russia and i believe they’re at a worse stage than they’ve been uh since during the cold war um president biden and president putin agreed in geneva that uh a nuclear war cannot be won therefore a nuclear war cannot be fought uh this is one of the only things these two leaders appear to agree on uh but this is an important one because while you know there might be ongoing clashes over you know cyber allegations uh geopolitical maneuvering with ukraine and then afghanistan etc uh both the united states and russia agree that uh as bad as it gets it cannot be allowed to escalate into a nuclear conflict and therefore bringing each side’s nuclear arsenal under control and de-linking nuclear weapons from the national security policies of both the united states and russia is paramount of paramount importance and that’s what’s going on in geneva is they are continuing a process of uh reducing the risk of nuclear conflict between these two nations yeah that’s certainly an important baseline to establish from the get-go um russia is apparently looking to bring in the brits and the french in on these talks the u.s wants to include china what do you think good idea bad idea why bring in a third a fourth a fifth party here well first of all when we speak of the u.s nuclear arsenal it is linked with nato nato operates under the nuclear umbrella of the united states and a nato nuclear umbrella inclusive of british and french nuclear weapons so one cannot speak of um you know addressing the nuclear threat posed by the united states to russia without including uh the french and nuclear arsenal so russia is is has every right to do this indeed this has been a russian soviet position from day one united united states has purposefully sought to distance any discussion of these theater nuclear forces from the overall strategic nuclear arms reduction discussions it has uh with russia but now that uh we’re talking about the totality of arsenal’s uh russia says no we we have to bring in the french and the british and it’s a very reasonable approach the united states on the other hand is seeking to bring in china the problem is china and russia don’t have a you know a joint nuclear policy these are totally separate nuclear arsenals that operate under totally separate national nuclear postures so from the russian perspective um it makes no sense in trying to bring china in as if russia and china were were linked and this is what the united states is trying to do so yeah on the one hand russia has every right to ask for the french and the british to be included because there is linkage between them and the u.s nuclear arsenal there is no linkage between russia and china and it’s a counterproductive to bring china in as an adjunct of russia china wants to join these as a third party independent of russia that’s reasonable china today does not indicate it wants to do so gotcha now speaking of the chinese though outside of these talks in geneva some russian military bosses are meeting with their chinese counterparts in tajikistan right now they’re agreeing to strengthen military cooperation is that relationship something that worries the us government well the u.s government appears to be worried about everything russia and china lately so no matter what russian china does there will be somebody in the u.s government that is concerned about it but the the the reality is that the united states precipitous withdrawal from afghanistan which i support by the way is going to be messy no matter what and it’s going to create a vacuum that if left unfilled could produce some extremely destabilizing after effects that that could bleed over into you know regional neighbors tajikistan is one of them um and you know the chinese and the russians are very concerned about radical islam exfiltrating out of afghanistan and into the former soviet republics in central asia and threw them into china where there’s an ongoing problem with the uyghur population there the chinese don’t want the uyghurs to be radicalized by islamic extremists trained uh and facilitated via afghanistan so um you know these two nations are going to come in iran is also looking at getting involved um their their goal is to contain the problem of afghanistan uh in the post-u.s era you
