Maryland Mandates Vaccines Or Testing For All Health Care, Nursing Home Staff

well now to maryland’s coronavirus fight the state reports more than 1 000 new cases today the positivity rate is nearing that 5 percent and 630 marylanders are now in the hospital being treated for the virus and a big announcement from governor hogan this afternoon health care workers and nursing home employees will be required to get vaccinated he also wants to speed up when you can get those booster shots wjz investigator mike helgen has it all covered and is live downtown right now with more on the governor’s remarks from today mike denise a bright spot 20 percent more people got vaccinated this month compared to last month and the governor aims to increase that number even further with this new mandate the delta variant continues to account for 100 percent of all new cases governor larry hogan focused on protecting the vulnerable during the latest covet 19 surge as hospitalizations are up almost five times what they were one month ago not every hospital has taken action and some continue to have far too many unvaccinated health care workers needlessly exposing their vulnerable patients in hospitals maryland will mandate all hospital and nursing home staff to get vaccinated by september first or submit to regular testing governor hogan your announcement today will save lives the governor plans to increase fines and other penalties for nursing homes that fail to report vaccinations we are concerned that the delta variant surge has led to an increase in infections among staff in nursing homes which has been a consistent source of outbreaks in these facilities throughout the pandemic governor hogan also called on the federal government to fully approve the vaccines and allow them to be used on children ages 5 to 11 as school begins currently only those 12 and older can be vaccinated we’re being told that this approval is still months away but that is simply not soon enough he also called on federal regulators to immediately allow booster shots for seniors and other vulnerable people they’ve already said they’re going to do it but they’re going to wait till the end of september and our question is why right now the governor is not mandating vaccines for all state employees and he had this to say about an indoor mask requirement we haven’t been talking about indoor mass requirements at all we’re being 80 vaccinated we think is a good step and if we can get the rest of the people vaccinated hopefully we won’t have to revert back to some of the things from a year ago when we didn’t have vaccines now the governor said when those booster shots become available to the general public he is not going to reopen the mass vaccination sites he said you can get the boosters at clinics or your local pharmacy reporting live in downtown baltimore mike helgen wjz
