hearts may be fixed on that place where true gladness is found through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of joshua joshua gathered all the tribes of israel together at sheikham then he called the elders leaders judges and scribes of israel and they presented themselves before god then joshua said to all the people if you will not serve the lord choose today whom you wish to serve whether the gods that your ancestors serve beyond the river are the gods of the amorites in whose land you are now living as for me and my house we will serve the lord the people answered we have no intention of deserting the lord our god who brought us and our ancestors out of the land of egypt the house of slavery who worked those great wonders before our eyes and preserved us all along the way we traveled and among all the peoples through whom we journeyed we too will serve the lord for he is our god the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] is [Music] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] taste and see that the lord is good [Music] yes [Music] [Applause] is [Music] stress [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] his bones not one of his bones [Music] is [Applause] [Music] the lord [Music] taste [Music] is [Music] [Applause] is [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the ephesians give way to one another in obedience to christ wives should regard their husbands as they regard the lord since as christ is head of the church and saves the whole body so is a husband the head of his wife and as the church submits to christ so should wise to their husbands in everything husbands should love their wives just as christ loved the church and sacrificed himself for her to make her holy he made her clean by washing her in water with a form of words so that when he took her to himself she would be glorious with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that but holy and faultless in the same way husbands must love their wives as they love their own bodies for a man to love his wife is for him to love himself a man never hates his own body but he feeds it and looks after it and that is the way christ treats the church because it is his body and we are its living parts for this reason a man must leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two will become one body this mystery has many implications but i am saying it applies to christ and the church the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Applause] [Music] your words are spirit lord and they are life you have the message of eternal life [Music] hallelujah [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit reading the holy gospel according to john glory to you oh lord after hearing his doctrine many of the followers of jesus said this is intolerable language how could anyone accept it jesus was aware that his followers were complaining about it and said does this upset you what if you should see the son of man ascend to where he was before it is the spirit that gives life the flesh has nothing to offer the words i have spoken to you are spirit and they are life but there are some of you who do not believe jesus knew from the outset those who did not believe and who it was that would betray him he went on this is why i told you that no one could come to me unless the father allows him after this many of his disciples left him and stopped going with him and jesus said to the twelve what about you do you want to go away too simon peter answered lord to who who shall we go to [Music] you have the message of eternal life and we believe we know that you are the holy one of god sisters and brothers the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ so we start today’s gospel with people being upset this is intolerable language how could anyone accept it and to help you see the context of it let me go back to the reading that we didn’t have last week because we took the readings of assumption since sunday was the 15th and so in last week’s would have been readings jesus talked in terms of i am the living bread anyone who eats this bread will live forever and the bread that i shall give is my flesh for the life of the world and for the jews that word flesh which implies also blood was problematic because for them blood flesh are things that need to be kosher no blood by the way no rash takes for good jewish people and so jesus goes on and despite the fact that they’re already talking how can this man give us his flesh to eat and jesus says i tell you more solemnly if you do not eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood you will not have life in you anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life and i shall raise him up on the last day for my flesh is real food and my body is real drink he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and i live in him very strong words and we who are catholic will see this as jesus affirming his very presence in the eucharist the real and true presence of jesus at every single mass and that’s why some of you feel so full on and lost because you’re unable to come and receive the body of christ the body and blood of christ i keep reminding you but i know you will say but you are very lucky because you can have both i keep saying that the table of the lord is just as important and not just to think only in terms of that altar but also this altar and here you are being fed at least you’re not being starved completely but i understand i perfectly understand why it is that you know you can feel [Music] left out online eucharist something that we do because it’s at least something but i realize it’s not the fullness and we long for the day when the church will be full it’s hard to celebrate mass for myself and a few volunteers and ultimately the lord is here but yes just as you miss the church we miss you too but to get back to today’s reading we see that people found it in tolerable language how could anybody accept it and so they are really ready to run away and indeed some do jesus says it is the spirit that gives life the flesh has nothing to offer the words i have spoken to you are spirit and they are life powerful words to tell us that hey this is big stuff important stuff but he also said there’s some of you who do not believe and this is something we have to recognize there are some who will deny the real presence of jesus in the eucharist and that’s sad very sad even among catholics there’s some who say you sure jesus is there and i’m saying yes i’m very sure because every time we receive the eucharist we come to an intimate union with christ himself we come to be one with him who gives himself to us as real food as real drink and as we receive of him we are drawn further into his life to become truly his body yes indeed if we look at today’s second reading it talks in terms of christ and his body and the body as in the church as the body of christ but as we receive the eucharist we indeed become more and more what we receive the body of christ we receive the body of christ and we become more truly the body of christ the community of believers that proclaims him unlike those who chose to leave and went away indeed today’s reading says that is why i told you that no one can come to me unless the father allows him jesus recognizes the call of the father to us to believe and the father allows that call to be heard but some will choose not to believe we recognize the right of everybody to choose but it is sad when people choose not to believe and walk away as it is we’re told after this many of these his disciples left him and stopped going with him and then he speaks to the twelve what about you what do you do you want to go away to and i think that’s something that we need to ask ourselves in this pandemic are we ready to walk away are we ready to give up on god because he hasn’t answered our prayers the way we want it to be perhaps some of us are taking it very lightly or online mass boring like i don’t agola and then we slowly start sinking away and our personal prayer life goes and very easy when churches open people will say hey i’ve done well without going to church it’s okay let me give up on church life and their faith can disappear danger a real danger i tell you and certainly something that we as church as the body you me everybody families will have to deal with as we hopefully reopen so even now we need to look at how is it how are we remaining as his body how are we remaining in the domestic church which is the family how do we keep faith how do we continue to draw strength in the words and to allow faith to grow even in the season some of you may say grow in the season yes i say grow in the season because some of us have discovered because we have more time because there is opportunities online for courses and things there are people who have grown so much over the pandemic the reality is that when we have things good we don’t grow as much as when we go through difficulties trials tribulations our faith grows and my prayer for each one of us is that our faith will grow in these difficult times so simon peter says lord to whom shall we go where shall we go to who shall we go to you have the message of eternal life and we believe we know that you are the holy one of god we believe simon said his credo his creed we believe that you are the holy one of god simon recognized that jesus was indeed god he had come to a level of faith although that faith was still up and down we’ll see later in john’s gospel that simon can also deny christ but he’d come to an understanding of who jesus was not just an ordinary man not just a miracle worker not just a fantastic teacher or teller of stories but he had come to realize he had come into the presence of god himself and this is whom we encounter at every eucharist and my prayer is that at every eucharist we will encounter the lord more and more even if it is an online mass that we will come to recognize the presence the intimate presence of god as we recognize him in the breaking of bread taste and see that the lord is good taste and see the goodness of god happening in your lives in the midst of the ups and downs of the pandemic going back to paul writing to the ephesians who talks in terms of christ and the church as exemplified by a man and a woman and their love for one another another as they are joined in marriage to become one body he talks in terms of loving loving and that as christ loved his body the church and if christ loved his body the church you and i are also called to love the church not just the building of the church but rather our sisters and brothers and to look beyond only the church as such all humanity are to be objects of our love we are called to bring this love that we experience here into the world because we are ultimately ambassadors of christ that are called to live out our call to live out our mission to be the body in the world taste and see that the lord is good and share of his goodness with all people amen we heard peter make his cradle his belief his creedal stance we now remind ourselves of what it is that we believe i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for as men and for our salvation he came down heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became a man for our sake he was crucified on the pontius pilot he suffered death and was buried and rose again in accordance with he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit [Music] i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen we turn to god our heavenly father and we bring to him the needs of our suffering world for pope francis the clergy religious and all lay leaders that despite physical restrictions they may lead us all to a deeper knowledge and love of god through their example actions and teaching we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the leaders of the world that the leaders find an amicable solution to the fighting in afghanistan and her people women and children especially be spread be spared from their terror and abuse we pray also that decisive steps will be taken to stop violence and killing of communities based on religion and ethnicity in syria iraq afghanistan myanmar nigeria and china we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our nation malaysia we pray for good and fair governance justice and peace and that the people’s best interests be placed first as we see a new government installed we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the ongoing covet 19 pandemic that we might see everywhere a reduction in the numbers infected that the sick may receive healing and comfort and front liners given the strength and courage to persevere may be all corporate in looking after our own common interests we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for all who participate in this mass that we will reform today our following of christ put our freedom in his hands and trust in his merciful love we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our personal intentions we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer god i love you father we thank you we praise you we glorify you because you accompany us in our journey through life in our difficulties you are there o lord to give us strength to give us courage that we may journey forth continue to help our country as we begin another new chapter in terms of our governance with the new prime minister we pray that lord your will be done in malaysia your will be done in terms of the political economic social and health spheres may you empower us to continue hoping and working for the best of every malaysian may we may our hearts also go out to people around the world may we know always your presence your protection may we continue to recognize you in the last the lost the least and the little we make our prayer through christ our lord in the crushing in the pressing [Music] you are making new eyes in the soil i now surrender you are breaking your ground [Music] when i trust you i don’t need to understand make me a vessel make me an offering make me whatever you want me [Music] jesus bring [Music] of me make me your vessel make me [Music] whatever you [Music] and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for all good and good of all his holy church o lord who gained for yourself a people by adoption through the one sacrifice offered once for all the so graciously on us we pray the gifts of unity and peace in your church through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit [Music] lift up your hearts we live them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father created the world and source of all life for you never forsake the works of your wisdom but by your providence are even now at work in our midst with mighty hand and outstretched arm you led your people israel through the desert now as your church makes a pilgrim journey in the world you always accompany her by the power of the holy spirit and lead her along the paths of time to the eternal joy of your kingdom through christ our lord and so with the angels and saints we to sing the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy god of hosts heaven and earth [Music] is [Music] you’re indeed holy and to be glorified of god to love the human race and always walk with us on the journey of life blessed indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and when as once the disciples are now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth the holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the night before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which shall be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is a chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] lord and professor [Music] therefore holy fathers we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you led through his passion and death on the cross of the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor on the oblation of your church in which we show forth the possible sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us and ground that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion and so having called us to your table lord confirm us in unity so that together with francis our poor and julian our bishop with all bishops priests and deacons in your entire people as we walk your ways with faith and hope we may strive to bring joy and trust into the world remember our sisters and brothers have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever then communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph his spouse with the apostles and martyrs and all the saints we shall praise and exalt you to jesus christ your son through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] together as one family we pray as jesus himself taught us our father art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done as we forgive those who trespass against us
