MATTHEW 26v31 75

MATTHEW 26v31 75

matthew 26 verse 31 now we come to the prediction of peter’s denial by jesus then jesus said to them all of you will be made to stumble because of me this night before it is written i will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered but after i have been raised i will go before you to galilee so in verse 31 jesus was prophesizing again predicting that the disciples will betray him they will be made to stumble they will be offended because of him that night and he quoted from zechariah 13 verse 7 zechariah 13 7 as it is written i will strike and it is all part of god’s plan i will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered so this imagine you were with jesus you are in his presence and he’s telling you that you know this is going to happen that he will be struck and you guys will all be running away and this is amazing because probably at first instance unbelief cannot be but when it happened it will be quite telling on the disciples verse 32 but after i have been raised i will go before you to galilee he seemed to be setting an appointment for them with them sometime in the future after he had been struck and then he has been raised and then he will go before them to meet them in galilee sometime in the near future but one might think shouldn’t jesus be angry shouldn’t he be upset that these people who have been following him he has been really generous with them transparent with them helping them teaching them and yet yet they would scatter and if they would scatter he would have been angry but not our lord jesus he was still he was still in very nice terms he said after i have been raised i will go before you to galilee and you know what is that that is grace that is amazing grace for he will never leave us nor forsake us he will never leave these disciples nor forsake them that is called restoration and jesus was predicting all this but not our dear peter peter did not accept the words coming out from jesus that means he wasn’t he did not accept the word of god and so peter answered in verse 33 peter answered and said to him even if all are made to stumble because of you i will never be made to stumble so he was just trying to raise himself above his peers he didn’t trust the rest but himself he said even if they all stumble i will not i will never be made to stumble now i will also be pointing out to you the steps to downfall in the person of peter and the first step in his downfall and is the last and their lessons for us to learn the first step in his town fall was his over confidence in the flesh in his own flesh his overconfidence i will never be made to stumble really we cannot be so confident because sometimes we do fall verse 34 jesus said to him assuredly i say to you that this night before the rooster crows you will deny me three times now in mark chapter 14 verse 10 i mean just for our learning purposes in mark chapter 14 verse 30 jesus same occasion jesus said to him assuredly i say to you that today even this night before the rooster crows twice you will deny me three times so mark recorded it as twice but here no mention of number of times but just before the rooster cross so important is before the rooster crows whether once or twice or three times you will deny me three times peter as i mentioned earlier he did not accept the word of god how do i know because he said to him even if i have to die with you i will not deny you even if i have to die with you i will not deny you again he was rejecting what jesus had prophesied in verse 31 and 32 [Applause] and so said the souls and so said all the disciples so the other disciples they were swayed by peter so it is what we call the hurt mentality but here we have peter’s denial as predicted by our lord jesus i want to point to you this verse before we move on jeremiah 17 5 jeremiah 17 5. thus says the lord cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength whose heart departs from the lord so let us not be like peter in the flesh he trusted in himself made his flesh his strength and for that for that moment his heart departed from the lord so verse 36 now from verse 36 we will be looking at the agony in gethsemane the agony in gethsemane if you have been to israel you will know this is a very beautiful place to be it is serene it is tranquil is definitely a place of prayer there are nice trees big olive trees gethsemane means press oil from olive so it is an olive oil press in short it is an oil press the place of the oil press where the the olive when harvested they are pressed in order for the oil to come forth but in this process something has to be crushed that is the olive the olive fruit has to be crushed that the oil will come forth so in the person of our lord jesus when he goes to the cross he will have to be crushed and he was crushed and the holy spirit come forth because he said unless i go the holy spirit cannot come so that is a picture of the crucifixion and what the significance of jesus crucifixion and the crushing of him so then jesus came with them to a place called gethsemane now if you look at the diagram before you if you look at the diagram before you if you look at the main the main picture here in the center that is the temple and to the right of the temple you will find a golden gate and just beyond that across the kidron valley you will find on the right side the garden of gethsemane each and every time we went to israel we would definitely go there and after a short lesson the group will be dispersed to walk in the garden in on their own to pray to talk to the lord and this is the garden of gethsemane it is the place where our lord jesus went just before he was arrested so then jesus came with them to a place called gethsemane and said to the disciples sit here while i go and pray over there and this is one place that they have been often it is not a place that is unfamiliar to them because in john 18 verse 2 john 18 verse 2 do i have it here john 18 verse 2 and this is uh gethsemane and when jesus had spoken this words he went out with his disciples over the brook kidron which i showed you in the diagram just now across the valley where there was a garden which he and his disciples entered and judas who betrayed him also knew the place for jesus often met there with his disciples so it was a place that was familiar to the disciples so he said sit here while i go and pray and there in this record there are three prayer meetings there were three prayer meetings recorded for us so the first prayer meeting in verse 37 and he took with him peter and the two sons of zebedee and he began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed now even after what jesus after what peter said in verse 34 where he where he was i mean where he you know in verse 33 where peter rejected the word of god and in verse 34 jesus said you will betray me you know you will not betray you will deny me sorry you will deny me and even then jesus still brought him because he was the core and jesus loves him and jesus took with him peter and the two sons of zebedee who are they james and john in spite of what despite what peter said earlier and he began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed why because of the events that will be coming forth of the challenge that we’ll be facing that he’ll be facing shortly then he said to them my soul is exceedingly sorrowful even to death stay here and watch with me stay here and play with me he went a little further and fell on his face jesus went a little further and fell on his face this is a picture of humility before god the father as a sign of surrender to the father he fell on his face and prayed and prayed jesus did not go forth and complain he could have god father why me why all the suffering that is prepared for me why must i go through this he wasn’t complaining he prayed saying o my father is it paul if it is possible let this cup pass from me nevertheless not as i will but as you will oh my father if it is possible let there be an alternative let there be another way of salvation is there any other uh matter but he but he asked oh my father is it possible to let this come there was his there was a humanity of christ in the in in the human form he was asking if it be possible let this cup so what is this cup this is the cup of judgment this is the cup of punishment for the sins of men and these are the sins of the world and jesus was to bear this cup and he said nevertheless not as i will but as you will because the father knows best the lords will be done and that should be a key lesson for us the key to prayer is the lord’s will as the lord wills so it is for us to request and then trust in him and then rest in him so if we look at colossians chapter 1 colossians chapter 1 verse 19 to 20 for it please the father that in him all the fullness should dwell and by him to reconcile all things to himself by him whether things on earth or things in heaven having made peace through the blood of his cross so even as we are reconciled in christ it pleases the father that all of us all of us would have made peace through the blood of his cross so this was what jesus prayed then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping and said to peter what you see the exclamation mark there so it was a louder volume what could you not watch with me one hour watch and pray lest you enter into temptation lest you yield to temptation the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak so the second step in peter’s downfall is sleeping when he should be praying the first step was over confidence in the flesh and the second step in his downfall is sleeping when he should be praying watch and pray that is the key to victory over temptation so now we come to the second parameter verse 42 again a second time he went away and prayed saying oh my father if this cup of judgment judgment because the the the wages the wages of sin is death it has to be paid so there is judgment but christ paid for us so if this cup cannot pass away from me unless i drink it your will be done and this is submission submission to the father and he came and found them asleep against primating again they were asleep for their eyes were heavy and you know the devil knows that there is power in prayer so if the devil makes you tempts you into slumber then there is no power in your prayer so that’s why many when reading the bible whenever they read the bible their eyes were closed it is the devil who knows that you will profit from reading the bible and so he causes you or he distracts you or whatever and you slumber then we come to verse 44 so he left them went away again and prayed the third time this is the third prayer meeting saying the same words the same words oh my father if this cup cannot pass away from me unless i drink it will be done then he came to his disciples and said to them are you still sleeping and resting behold the hour is at hand and the son of man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners so while they were sleeping the enemies were plotting led by judas plotting the arrest of our lord jesus now i want to say that jesus victory at calvary was worn at gethsemane he was before the father and he was praying unto the father and that the lord’s will be done and once he has done with that nothing else will stop him and so he will proceed in obedience unto the cross so now he in verse 46 he said to them rise let us be going see my betrayer is at hand he did not condemn them he did not condemn peter james nor john for sleeping he said to them let us be going my betrayer is at hand and jesus was able to stand up to the devil stand up to the betrayer stand up to the devil because he first knelt before god because he first knelt down before god so now he could stand up to the devil to satan verse 47 we now see the arrest of our lord jesus christ and while he was still speaking and this was in the garden and while he was still speaking behold judas as i mentioned earlier the name means praise behold judas one of the twelve with a great multitude with swords and clubs came from the chief priests and elders of the people wow that is a lot of people there is a big troop that they have brought to arrest a person just a single person by the name of jesus but judas knew jesus has supernatural power he is not a normal person so they brought a big force now how big is this force we look at john 18 john 18 verse 3 then jesus jesus no sorry then judas having received a detachment of troops and officers from the chief priests and pharisees came there with lanterns tortures and weapons a detachment of troops according to history a detachment would have about 600 soldiers at least 600 soldiers and plus all their swords and clubs that is a lord and they came from chief priests you might wonder eh i thought i thought uh there is only one chief priest now if you go back and read first chronicles chapter 24 first chronicles chapter 24 you will know that king david divided the tribe of levites the priestly tribe into 24 divisions into 24 divisions and each division was led by a priest a chief priest so that’s why we have got chief priests now uh of course the one in the temple is the high priest one and only the high priest so these are the chi priests so they came from the chi priests and elders of the people these are the seniors in the community these are the the family heads of the community and 600 over people came for jesus verse 48 now his betrayer had given them a sign saying whomever i kiss he is the one sees him whoever whomever i kiss he is the one sees him immediately he went up to jesus and said greetings rabbi and kissed him now it tells us that jesus was very ordinary looking and in the crowd it wasn’t exactly easy to just identify him so judas did the job by going forth and giving jesus a kiss now we read in isaiah 53 verse 2 and isaiah wrote for he shall grow up before him as a tender plant referring pointing to jesus and as a root out of dry ground he has no form or calmliness and when we see him there is no beauty that we should desire him he is despised and rejected by man a man of sorrows acquainted with grief as we hit as it were our faces from him he was despised and we did not esteem him but just looking at verse 2 he was just an ordinary looking person like us like these people who were with him and so judas offered some help so whomever i kiss and that is the sign of betrayal immediately he went up to jesus and said greetings rabbi again did not address him as lord but just a rabbi just another teacher and kissed him now in the original text is it was a fervent kiss it was a continuous case so he kissed him you know a few times and in verse 50 but jesus said to him friend why have you come i mean even at this moment at this moment jesus freedom is coming to an end his freedom in the land and he knew he would be arrested all because of a betrayer and that soon he will be facing death still he called judah’s friend amazing grace in short jesus was giving him another chance to repent then they came and laid hands on jesus and took him and suddenly one of those who were with jesus stretch out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the most high priest and cut off his ear so who is this violent person amongst the group with jesus that he would take a sword and he was drunk that person we read the same event this is uh the rest of jesus in gethsemane in john chapter 18 verse 10. then simon peter having a sword drew it and struck the high priest servant and cut off his right ear the servant’s name was malcus so jesus said to peter put your sword in the sheath shall i not drink the cup which my father has given me peter put back your sword i will go as god has designed god has planned god has determined for me so we see here we see here the third step in peter’s downfall was he took matters into his own hand first he was over confidence in the flesh secondly sleeping when he should be praying and thirdly he took matters into his own hands because in jesus presence just let him do but peter took matters into his own hands and he drew his sword now this is the physical sword but it is also a picture of the sword of the spirit it is also a picture of the word of god so the word of god should not be spread through violence we should not through violence evangelize the word of god so he struck the servant who was an unbeliever and cut off his year perhaps peter being a fisherman was not so accurate in his aim he was better with nets and fish and not with sword and necks he may have aimed for the neck but he missed it and he got the year but remember we should not use this the word of god to hurt people we must not use the word of god to hurt people we look at luke 22 51 luke 22 verse 51 and luke recorded even so same event uh and one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his year that was peter but jesus answered and said permit even this that means allowed this event to pass allow this arrest to be taken to be made and he touched his ear and healed him and this was the last miracle jesus did so where we verse 52 verse 52 matthew 26 but jesus said to him put your sword in its place jesus did not say get rid of the sword put your sword in his place so jesus wasn’t a pacifist pacifist is one who is totally against war against weapons against uh aggression against defense but it is okay to have a to have defense who have a sword in your shift but don’t take it now not this not this occasion so put your sword in its sheath for all who take the sword will perish by the sword all who take the sword and as you read in revelation the violence that will prevail during that time all this all these unbelievers evil doers followers of antichrist they will be put down and for all who think the sword will perish by the sword we will see that in revelation so again do not use the sword to defend christianity do not use the sword do not use the word to hurt others verse 53 or do you think that i cannot now pray to my father and he will provide me with more than 12 legions of angels you know how many is one legion a legion has 6 000 angels so 6 000 times 12 that is 72 000 angels that is a lot and on many occasions only one or two angels were neither if you read all the way to revelation in the end you know how many chain the devil down one just one if you look at revelation 20 verse 1 revelation 20 satan bound for 1000 years then i saw an angel coming down from heaven having the key to the bottomless pit and the great chain in his hand he laid hold of the dragon that serpent of all who is the devil and satan and bound him for a thousand years and cast him into the bottomless spit and shut him up and set a seal on him how many angels one an angel and if jesus could call 12 000 no 72 thousand angels that is a lot hindi could just pray to the father and it be so verse 54 how then could the scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen thus so the scripture must be fulfilled and jesus wasn’t surprised at this event so we look at john chapter 13 verse 26 jesus answered john 13 26 it is to he it is he to whom i shall give a piece of bread oh okay we skip this reference this is for the i got the wrong reference this is for the communion and the betrayal so how then could the scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen thus so the word must be fulfilled in that hour jesus said to the multitudes have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to take me i sat daily with you teaching in the temple and you did not cease me but all this was done that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled and all this had been prophesized in the psalm for his crucifixion you can look at psalm 22 and you can also look at the familiar psalm 53 and also in zechariah you can read chapter 12 and 13. all this pointed to the sacrifice of our lord jesus his crucifixion and they must be fulfilled and he knew he wasn’t surprised he knew his hour has come but the sad thing is the next sentence the next verse then all the disciples forsook him and fled what did he say in verse 30 to 31 i will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered verse 31 and truly it happened then all the disciples forsook him and fled you know it’s so easy to be loyal when things are going well but listen for us do not run do not quit but be faithful now we come to verse 57. and in verse 57 we see the trial of jesus before caiaphas and those who laid whole of jesus led him away to kaiapas the high priests where the scribes and the elders were assembled but peter followed him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard and he went in and sat with the servants to see the end this is the downfall the continuing downfall of peter and so what happened now the fourth step in his downfall he was following jesus a far off not near he was following jesus afar off and the fifth step in his downfall was he left the fellowship so let me read verse 58 again he followed peter followed him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard so it is not the best place to be follow jesus closely not afar off and he went in and he went into the courtyard and sat with the servants who are they these are the unbelievers he went in and sat with the unbelievers the servants to see the end so he left the fellowship of believers so remember the five steps it can lead you to your downfall if you have over confidence in the flesh if you sh you sleep when you should be praying and you take matters into your own hands and you follow jesus from afar off and you leave the fellowship bad formula it is your downfall so they led him to kaiopas who was the high priest and he brought him to the this is the headquarters where the religious leaders gather and in verse 59 now the chief priests of the elders and all the council sought false testimony against jesus to put him to death but found none now first of all this is the evening and they were not they were not supposed to gather and deliberate at night but here they did so and in this council or also known as the sanhedrin there are about 71 people in this sanhedrin and they needed a case to be put a charge to be put against jesus because these people do not have the power to pronounce the death penalty by crucifixion so they have to find a charge that they can then get wrong to issue the death penalty so now the chief priests the elders and all the councils sought false testimony because all this while as we have been studying they were they were trying to test jesus and to trap him and and just to put him down but they could not they could not and even if they wanted testimonies this people who have been healed who have been delivered they could only testify of the goodness the grace and the mercy of god so now instead they sought false testimony against jesus which is against the law against the against the ten commandments even though many false weaknesses came forward they found none but at last two false weaknesses came forward and said this fellow how irreverent it was this fellow i am a this fellow said i am able to destroy the temple of god and to build it in three days and you know jesus was referring to his body not the physical church but these false weaknesses uh delivered the right though they delivered the right information but the implication was wrong jesus was not referring to the physical temple but that’s what it was testifying by this false witness and so the high priest verse 62 verse 62 and the high priest arose and said to him do you answer nothing what is it this man testify against you what is it this man testified against you but jesus kept silent and of course we know in in isaiah 53 verse 7 he was silent before his captors isaiah 53 verse 7 he was oppressed and he was afflicted yet he opened not his mouth he was led as a slam to the as a lamp to the slaughter and as a sheet before it’s sure it’s silent so he opened not his mouth what a prophecy and amazingly it was fulfilled exactly but jesus kept silent and the high priest answered answered and said to him i put you under oath by the living god tell us if you are christ the son of god in essence he is doubting jesus truthfulness if you know jesus is god and he is the truth why do you still need to ask this surely he doubted jesus truthfulness i put you under oath by the living god tell us if you are the christ the son of god jesus said to him it is as you said nevertheless i say to you here after you will see the son of man jesus favorite title he is he often described himself as the son of man you will see the son of man sitting at the right hand of the power and coming on the clouds of heaven wow the high priest could not take this could not handle this what did he do then the high priest tore his clothes saying he has spoken blasphemy what further need do we have of weaknesses he has spoken blasphemy against god and he tore his clothes and he said look now you have heard this blasphemy what do you think but just looking at verse 65 he tore his clothes do you know it is forbidden of the high priest to tear his clothes in leviticus 21 in leviticus 21 verse 10. he who is the high priest among his brethren on whose head the anointing oil was poor and who is consecrated to wear the garments shall not uncover his head nor his clothes so we look further in chapter shall not okay let me find another verse 10 verse 6 and moses said to aaron and eliasa and itama his sons do not uncover your heads or tear your clothes lest you die and wrath come upon all the people so it is very clear that high priest will know as mentioned and stipulated in leviticus cover your heads do not uncover them and do not tear your clothes lest you die and ralph come upon all the people but this high priest in reaction to what jesus said which he did not like because who is this jesus who says that he will come and sitting at the right hand of power heaven i mean heaven uh heavenly god in the right hand at the right hand of the power and coming on the clouds of heaven then the high priest tore his clothes saying he has spoken blasphemy that means he has spoken against god and you know for the priest to tear his clothes he has just disqualified himself and he has disqualified himself in the presence of jesus who is the great high priest and you know prophetically that is correct because the lower must bow down to the higher and here you have the high priest who has just tore his clothes disqualified himself and he in essence is bowing down to the great high priest the person of our lord jesus christ what further need do we have or weaknesses there was none no name so look now you have heard his test his blasphemy what do you think and the rest they answered and said he is deserving of death why for telling the truth jesus was telling the truth and he was deserving of death so say the religious leaders verse 67 then they spat in his face and beat him and other struck him with the palms of their hands say prophesy to us christ who is the one who struck you then they sped if you look into the cultures and custom of the east orient in the past spitting into someone’s face is the greatest insult you can inflict upon him yes it is physical abuse but it is the greatest insult one can do to another and they beat him and struck him um with the palms of the hands and even today even today they they do uh inflict punches or or hits on their enemies with the palm of their hands saying prophesies to us and they were mocking jesus since you know so much you know everything you know for the future tell us tell us who struck you they were the blind ones not jesus now the fact that they asked jesus uh prophesied to ask who struck you because not mentioned here but because jesus was blindfolded yeah and also probably his eyes were swollen and his face was blooded unfortunately they they these people they were the blind ones not jesus and they struck him for what for his goodness they struck him for his righteousness they struck him for his holiness but jesus took it all he took it all for us now we come to the last part of chapter 26 and this is peter’s denial verse 69 now peter sat outside in the courtyard and a servant girl came to him saying you also were with jesus of galilee now imagine this is a very hostile environment he was in the enemy’s territory and i would commend him because the other disciples have fled and they have not returned and though peter fled with them forsook jesus but he turned around and he came and he had courage to even sit in the courtyard and a maid servant not a roman soldier and a servant came to him saying you also were with jesus of galilee but he denied it all before them or with others who were standing in the courtyard but he denied it before them all saying i do not know what you are saying i do not know what you’re saying that was the first denial and that is instinct human instinct for survival so we call it self-preservation and when he had gone in when he had gone out to the gateway another girl saw him and said to those who were there this fellow also was with jesus of nazareth but again he denied with an oath swearing i do not know the man that is a lie that is a lie and he swore using god’s name he used an oath and he said i do not know the man again it is self-preservation so that is the second denial verse 73 and a little later those who stood by came up and said to peter surely you also are one of them for your speech betrays you and how long later if you wish to know it is in luke 22 luke 22 59 same event then after about an hour had passed another confidently affirmed saying surely this fellow also was with him for he is a galilean but peter said man i do not know what you are saying so this is the third denial so in an hour later came the third denial and here we see how is it that they could recognize that peter was a galilean by his speech by his speech because those who are from the north from galilee their speech is a bit rough they are torn their accent could be a bit different i mean even if we we talk about mandarin the mandarin that we speak here in singapore is it sounds a bit different when we do the same in china and they will know if you are mainland china china chinese speaking mandarin or a singaporean speaking mandarin we speak english but if you go to america your english is it sounds different from that of an american or even an australian or even a british so they can tell so they could tell that he was from galilee surely you also are one of them for your speech betrays you so what is the lesson here when you are born again when you are a child of god your speech is going to be different no more polluting no more corrupting no more with profanity you will have a different speech so don’t go back to your all talk you must now talk a new talk differently talk clean if i may say verse 74 then he began to curse you see a typical fisherman then he began to curse and swear saying i do not know the man in so doing he has just fulfilled jesus prophecy he denied jesus three times immediately immediately a rooster crawled and peter remembered the word of jesus who said to him before the rooster crawls you will deny me three times so he went out and wept bitterly he was a broken man by now and i’m sure i’m sure he repented and he truly truly repented when jesus shall meet him on the beach for breakfast and after breakfast jesus asked him three times if he loved jesus and that is how all this found in john chapter 21 which we will cover soon i pray john chapter 21 breakfast with the lord jesus and you will find all this from verse 15 onwards so what we have here immediately a rooster crow now as far as i know no rooster or hand was allowed in the holy city but there it was a rooster crowd and peter remembered the word of jesus so we we must learn from this and let’s look at 1st peter chapter 5 verse 8. be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour and peter in his moments of overconfidence in his moments of slumber in his moment of his own initiative was taken in by the devil so to speak and even so he was being used by the devil and that’s why even pete jesus said to him get thee behind me satan because in matthew 16 he spoke though after jesus spoke about his uh coming sacrifice peter said it shall not be so and jesus told him get thee behind me satan because he was being used by the devil so first peter chapter 5 verse 8 reminds us be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour so father we thank you for this long chapter but much we have learned [Music] we learn most of all all that jesus did for us that he willingly in obedience went to the cross to pay the price for each and every one of us and we also learn lord that in the flesh we can fall and like peter a good example whom we can learn from and that you restored him and i know that each and every time that we restore upon repentance lord you will restore us so we thank you lord for your mercy and your grace and while we are still here lord help us to be vigilant that we will not be devoured by the devil in jesus name we pray amen you
