Microsoft Surface Headphone 2+ Review 2021

we’re back looking at the best headphones you can use with microsoft teams today we’ve got another set of over-the-ear headphones this time it’s microsoft’s own surface headphones 2 plus now as you might expect these are a premium device which are certified for microsoft teams we’ve been using them for about the last month so that we can let you know what they’re like today we’re going to dive into the comfort the controls the battery levels sound quality and everything else you might want to know before you drop 249 usd about 239 british pounds on these things there’ll be time codes below if you want to skip around so let’s get into it first up let’s see what you get oh this is very nice we’ve got this large carry case which contains all of our accessories so inside we’ll find we’ve got the headphones right here at the bottom and on top we’ve got the microsoft usb a bluetooth dongle we’ve got the usb a to usb c charging cable and we’ve got the three and a half millimeter headphone adapter now no wall socket as is pretty usual with these modern devices we’ve also got a nice getting started guide right here too pretty good so these are an over-the-ear style headphone and just like the jabra evolves that we’ve previously reviewed despite the size they are very light the build quality is beautiful there’s no boom arm microphone on these so literally this is how they look when you’re wearing them the fit is very easy to adjust and i have to say that the leather on these ear cups is incredibly soft and for people who are easily confused there’s a very clear l and r on each side so you know which way around to wear them on each side you can also see the microphones that are used to cut out the background noise as well as the main microphone array we’ll talk more about those later on and the overall finish for these is this matte black with some very simple prominent controls which are really easy to find when you’re wearing them now all of the controls are contained on the two ear cups on the right hand side as you’re wearing it you’ve got two buttons you’ve got one for power on off and the other one is a teams button now i still don’t understand why you have a teams button but if you press it it opens up the teams app on your laptop surrounding the right hand side is this volume control which is a very smooth rotation here on the left ear cup there’s no more buttons there’s just another dial here there’s a very simple adjustment of the automatic noise cancellation so this will let you hear background noise or not as much background noise as much as you like and there are some really clear audio problems as you move from this kind of pass-through mode into automatic noise cancellation honestly it’s probably one of the best implementations that we’ve seen and then there are two final controls which is that kind of combo answer hang up play pause forward back and it’s in the same place on both sides you can tap double tap or triple tap here to pick one of those options and to be honest it can be a little bit confusing to remember how many times you need to tap to get something to work but all of the controls have this premium feel to them and for the most part very easy to use and very easy to remember where they are weighing in at a measly 290 grams or about 10 ounces these are really light and the ear cups are the perfect size to surround my ears this material makes them really nice to wear for extended periods of time what i have noticed though is my ears do tend to get very warm while wearing these so although they’re really comfortable there’s definitely a feeling of relief when i take them off the headphones have got a generous 18 hour battery pack and i guess that’s probably largely due to the size of these earcups especially when you compare it to some of those smaller in-ear bluetooth devices to be really clear microsoft will claim 18 hours of battery life if you’re listening to music it’s 15 hours if you’re talking on teams calls now it’ll take you two hours to charge it back up completely and you know what not surprisingly in the last month i have rarely experienced the headphones running out of battery they’re a very clear audio problems which let you know with plenty of notice when you need to recharge the guided setup is really simple and there’s a very nice app on ios which has lovely videos to guide you through all the features and functions similarly there’s a windows 10 app which has the same guided setup and it’s really super simple to follow when you’re setting these up on windows and mac just pop in the bluetooth dongle kick off the application and you’re away it really is that simple pairing with your mobile device is simple too with the surface audio app you can just follow the on-screen prompts and you’re away obviously working with teams is a great experience these devices are made by microsoft with teams in mind so they’re comfortable for long calls and the sound quality is fantastic the noise cancellation on these things is very good it’s not excellent but it’s very good there’s one microphone on each side which is dedicated to listening to the background noise and then cutting that out and so that way i’m not ever distracted from anything that’s happening in the room now again because these are over the ear the physical noise blocking is also fantastic just like the jabra evolve twos that we spoke about last month i have to say that these probably aren’t my style and i do feel very self-conscious around the sheer size of these when i’m on video calls once again it’s really simple to use these headphones with multiple bluetooth devices like your laptop and your mobile the surface headphones can happily keep two devices connected at the same time now what can happen on some devices is that when you’re on a teams call and your mobile phone rings it takes over the headphones and mutes you on teams until you deal with the mobile call fortunately not with the surface headphones you just get a nice in-ear notification that you have another call incoming but it doesn’t mute you or take over the call or anything crazy like that so it’s actually it’s a really nice experience that they’ve thought through being literally designed by microsoft for teams these are fantastic for meeting and calling you can tell that they’ve gone specifically out of their way to design a device that sounds great for work but also for when you want to listen to music or podcast too and thanks to the large size of these ear cups there are some very nice speakers in here the surface audio app on desktop and mobile actually lets you adjust the equalizer with some really quick presets it’s very easy to flip between different sound profiles to suit whatever content you’re listening to the noise cancellation is really very good but not 100 effective in a typical office environment you’ve got this physical noise blocking which is great because they’re over the ear and then add to that you have the automatic noise cancellation with these two external microphones but what i found is that if i’m not listening to something or if i’ve just finished a teams call i can still quite clearly hear conversations from the other side of the office even with the anc dialed up to the maximum now you can rotate this dial on the left ear cup through to pass through sound and pass through sound amplified both of these will enable you to hear more clearly what’s going on around you in our testing we noticed a very large amplification of the background aircon so a noise that you would normally really easily tune out when you’re in the office with the headphones on in pass-through mode it becomes very apparent now again there are some really nice audio prompts to let you know which anc mode you’re switching between and so again it’s a really nice experience the microphone quality is pretty good you know along with some of the local noise cancellation callers on the other end of my team’s course can hear me clearly but unlike some of the other units that we’ve tested the surface headphones do seem to let background noise through and so people on my course can hear background noise in my office which is odd even with teams noise cancellation set to max people in my calls are hearing conversations going on in my office now when i’m speaking they can hear me clearly so it’s never been a real issue but you know it’s just something that we thought was quite strange there are some challenges with these to use the windows 10 surface audio app you have to pair the surface headphones with windows not the usb dongle but you do need the dongle for teams calls now the headphones can support two active bluetooth pairings at a time but now both of these are taken up by my laptop one for windows and one for the bluetooth surface dongle so now i can’t use it with my phone so in the end we just unpaired windows we use the headphones with the bluetooth dongle and now we can still use teams and then we use the headphones bluetooth to my iphone now i can still run the surface audio app and i get all the control of all those different presets that i want in the equalizer when it comes to side tone which refers to the amount of your own voice that you can hear inside the headphones it does feel a bit like i’m in a fish tank sometimes when i’m talking yes you know i can reduce the amount of automatic noise cancellation but that’s not really achieving the natural sound that i want on other devices that we’ve reviewed we can adjust the amount of side tone but i just couldn’t find a way to do that here thirdly you know my ears do get very warm when i’ve been wearing these for a while and so there still was that feeling of relief when i took them off um and so finally i think i would say the anc pressure is actually quite noticeable and doesn’t have this continual audible hiss so if i’m not listening to anything i just have the headphones on like say i’ve finished a call or i’ve just finished listening to a podcast there’s a very obvious hiss and and quite a bit of pressure that i’m feeling on my ears from that anc again we don’t tend to get that with a lot of other devices when it comes to price the surface headphones are competitively priced actually at 249 us dollars about 239 pounds so you’re really looking at that kind of airpods pro type price point and somewhere around 100 cheaper than the competing evolv 285 from jabra so you know what if you’re happy with some of the minor challenges that we’ve outlined in this video definitely grab a set of these if you’ve got the extra budget we’d recommend you do check out the evolv 85 twos definitely worth a look for that extra 100 well that’s it if you enjoyed this video maybe check out our reviews of other teams headsets leave us any questions or comments below and we will see you next time
