Microsoft’s Acquisition Attempts | Rise & Fall of Tech News #8 PART 1

and then there’s another acquisition that i don’t think a lot of people talk about is the ai company nuance microsoft was reported to buy i actually bought the ai company nuance for they’re like they do health they do like like um speech detection speech recognition are for some reason radiology reporting and they they’re i think the real reason why they bought them was for speech recognition and for medical and medical technology it was they bought them for 19 years i heard about that including all of new yeah in all of nuances debt so they paid for 23 so they paid more than just just 19 billion dollars yeah and nuance is essentially i think it’s the the thing that’s like essentially like dragon dictate but for medicine or for medical and the it i’ve also heard apparently it sucks it like is basically the de facto standard software for something like that but it also just sucks see the problem is with microsoft is this is because they aren’t being called into into court they believe oh well we can get away with this right they because they know they can get away of this they’re not being called them to call into like facebook or twitter or amazon or google or apple they know they can get away with it and it’s just that makes it even more juicy for them because it means they can make they can control more markets and make more money and control more of what people do like as a whole i mean why do you think they’re i mean like other than you know they want power like why is microsoft going on this buying spree is because they’re kind of stalled as a company like they’re that they have cemented themselves thus far as the computer of the or you know the operating system of the world and basically if you’re a computer like a consumer computer user and you buy a laptop you are running windows [Music] uh hi uh i’m windward and he’s matt and we are going to be talking about a couple of different things here our main topics are going to be microsoft’s acquisition addiction uh uh google’s recent data abuse uh you know because they don’t have a history of that or anything um and some recent uh i guess is it information that’s come out about um it’s alden it’s old news but it’s related to apple apple’s new announcement against a child pornography abuse yes and um you know also a couple of little tidbits sprinkled here and there so anyway um before the stream you and i were talking about tesla and i wanted to finish up or so i wanted to talk about that a little bit so we were talking about um how tesla wasn’t invited to uh to uh biden made an announcement talking about a move you know america’s move to uh to to have 50 percent electric cars by 2030 and he invited all of the big auto manufacturer or all of the big american auto manufacturers like gm and chevy and ford and there’s a one suspiciously missing and that’s tesla at the the electric car convention and um uh i i think you’re you you find that opinion less controversial than i do um i would say it’s only because um my my thing is like they don’t want to involve tesla i don’t know i i don’t know how what am i supposed to do predict the white house like i can’t predict the white house no one can predict the white house like they are they are they really are just like rogue rogue agents in a in a thing so um jeez i did did you write down the point that i was trying to make because i was going somewhere with the conversation i don’t require anything um oh i i write down my skip my work schedule i write down like the ch stuff i need to get well not including tesla in the white house but including all the other big auto manufacturers yes so if i can find i would say that topic is lost i’ve completely forgotten oh oh okay um did i ever tell you that i hate tesla with a burning passion more more so i would argue probably just i would i hate the other car manufacturers more but i hate the way tesla treats their vehicles because tesla hate tesla hates the right to repair they enslave a bunch of children in the congo i mean which is kind of they have a meme lord on twitter distracting people from the fact that his company is trying to take over the auto manufacturing industry yeah i mean so like so here’s the thing do you think that the you have a bad opinion of tesla and i have a i i would say i have a good opinion of tesla what do you think the average person thinks about tesla um i would say it’s more that like at least in the case of tesla that like the average person i don’t think cares because most people can’t even afford getting a tesla car yeah um i would say that i think the uh i i would say if you look if you don’t look at tesla like i think you know in the us in general the average person doesn’t particularly care about tesla but i think if you look in more the techy kind of community which is the community that you and i deal with a lot more i would say that people do like uh that that people do have a positive opinion of tesla whereas a different company like facebook people tend to have a negative opinion of and i i would say that i think tesla is doing yeah i i think that in general they’re doing more good things than bad things right now but you said you you think that tesla has a monopoly on self-driving and i just consumer self-driving and i need to be very careful about that because there are companies that exist in the united states today which do work with self-driving trucks for example self-driving buses but not self-driving consumer vehicles um so but like what about other companies or like uh but do you mean in the sense that tesla is the only company right now that is doing anything in that field or that tesla actually has they’re intentionally pricing their vehicles to make it not profitable for other companies to do so well i mean like i don’t know so if so if at some point tesla’s going to come out with their whatever their like cheap version of their car is it’s going to be like a 25 000 hatchback of some variety that’s directly going to compete with other cars that are that size like um like a uh like a chevy volt or whatever but like a chevy vault is a piece of crap compared to a tesla and theoretically tesla is still profitable with those profit margins so like why what is what is chevy doing that or what is tesla doing that chevy isn’t doing that makes tesla better at doing it they have a space company which funds them lots of money for them to price out other people but like actually or just in general they they have they’ve been they’ve been sued about this by the ftc a couple times this is this is a very real thing i think that it’s so but so what i the reason i push back on the idea of calling them a monopoly on self-driving is that there’s nothing preventing other car manufacturers from going into the same field like there’s nothing preventing uh you know chrysler from putting all the sensors that tesla has in their car in or in a tesla in the next in in the next chrysler vehicle whatever and and you know getting training data set from them or there’s nothing that prevents i don’t know any of the other car manufacturers from using the numerous sensors that they have in order to create self-driving uh data sets it’s just that no other car company is really doing it well tesla isn’t very intentional about it because what they do is they make it done in such a way that when they do it it’s so that when people try to people can’t fund the research to do things like self-driving cars because tesla has basically pumped in themselves into debt trying to make the models for stuffed about like like self-driving cars like you know like the sensors that identify like blocks in the road i mean i know other companies have done that but but like there’s an example or like detecting traffic patterns frankly tesla’s self-driving sucks like my dad is a tesla and he got the the full self-driving package so he has the ability to to use all of that and and on his car he you know you know you have the two the two self-driving modes that come with tesla you have um the lane keeping and then you have or you have autopilot and full self-driving and autopilot is um uh autopilot is is you know glorified lane keeping that that you know it it keeps the speed limit whenever you set it to it stays in its lane and it breaks if there’s a car in head ahead of it which you could do that kind of thing in a raspberry pi and then you have the quote full self-driving or the beta version of the full self-driving which is basically exactly that except also it changes lanes sometimes and basically that’s it it’s like cool it’s ten thousand dollars for basically changing lanes sometimes and i mean tesla definitely is working on something more than that right now but right now tesla isn’t doing anything more than what uh was the car that i drove recently i think it was a ford that i drove no it was a subaru i drove a subaru recently um when i was it as a as a rental car and the subaru had quote unquote lane keeping and you know when you’re on the highway what it does is is it will allow you to it keeps you in your lane it keeps the speed limit whatever you set it to and it will stop if you know the car ahead of you stops and that’s basically what tesla does at least at this point and the i mean like yeah you know tesla has like some like it can recognize that there’s like a trash can or a person or something but it won’t do anything as a response to that and so i think it’s kind of dumb it’s not my the self-driving component is only like a small fraction of the problem my argument is that what they’re going to do is they’re trying to make cars obsolete and making it so you can only get it through yes well i think that they’re trying to make cars off so i i think that they’re trying to their goal eventually is to make the human driver obsolete in cars yes i agree with that but i i think what’s the the kind of roundabout thing about that is if you have you know like you know tests or like elon’s vision of tesla’s of like a a perfect future with tesla is you have this autonomous car network that no one owns the vehicles to and they just kind of like roam around and if you need to be picked up you just like hail a tesla car that comes and picks you up and like what you’ve described is you’ve described a more a more miniaturized version of public transit like that’s what that is but now it’s in a private entity and not a government entity yes i mean uh whether or not uh uh like whether or not public transit is a private entity or a government entity has kind of always been a um it’s a thing that’s handled on a country-by-country basis so like in japan the the suica transit system largely considered to be the best train system in the whole world because it is the most ext most extensive and has the most number of people that it carries per year and that train system is quote unquote privately owned but it’s privately owned and very very heavily funded and regulated by the government and i mean you know if tesla grows huge and this vision of a of a tesla-powered future actually comes to fruition um well they’re gonna start getting regulated like any other big tech corporation would weren’t they um i well the problem with that is big tech is not being regulated at all yeah well i mean so i have more to do with lobbying that that is going to happen and i don’t think the i think divided administration right now is just all talk and no problem and no actual like action like if they’re going to actually stay true to their promise it would be you do something about it because right now you’re not doing anything and you’re just perpetuating the problem it’s the same thing like what happened under the trump administration the trump administration if anything perpetuated the fact that america right now is controlled by its its tech monoliths and if we continue down the road of tesla doing the same thing with their like with their cars who’s to say what’s going to happen next with the next company that comes along offering trying to do something similar so i think with microsoft when you look at like like the all these like like the like amazon for example buying what was it mgm for how much how much money biden administration doesn’t even bat an eye they don’t do anything ftc doesn’t do anything right like this is the this is the problem right there we need to there’s a point where you have too much and you need to be taken down right there is no point for companies like scummy companies like amazon and salesforce and like and like apple to be as big as they are that no company should be that big well because it you impede on human life and on people’s well-being if you do i mean yeah i think that’s a bigger topic of conversation though because i think when it comes to like the size of tech companies i’ve i’ve said this before like at what point does a company stop becoming a company and you know start becoming a nation like amazon at one point was literally actually considering buying a country that was selling their sovereignty like unironically now they didn’t but they might have in which case amazon would have become on a country that was operating in the uh the united states as opposed to an organization that was operating in the united states which is very different and the and and i think the the question is like is you know that there is the question of how large we should allow companies to grow and i think the us government’s response i think the western response in general is um has kind of been we’ll deal with that once we get to that um which is very different from china’s response that that’s essentially saying yeah you know we don’t have to worry about it because all of these big companies are us and we are the these big companies like they’re like the fines of thompson and alibaba yeah yeah like 10 cent is essentially just the ccp right like i mean don’t catch yourself yeah and and and and you know but everyone knows that and the government knows that everyone everyone in china knows that it’s not secret whereas like you know the united states it’s it’s sort of like the tech big tech is turning politics on its head because now they’re the ones controlling everything yeah and i think the the problem is us politics is kind of being thrown around by companies that that you know like lobbyists and companies that have a lot more you know they have money that’s able to to to buy influence and i think that is incredibly broken but when it comes to like you know if tesla does like let’s let’s say you know we give tesla their their ideal future they they they are the public transit system well why is that necessarily bad well i i believe it’s because they’re going to destroy they’re going to be the one monolith that replaces the oligopoly of six i think the the well i i don’t think i i don’t think the tesla is just going to like you know dominate the whole world and is going to surpass apple and microsoft and all that i don’t i don’t even make but i’m saying what’s going to happen is it’s going to happen slowly that’s that’s they they knew they looked at big tech and saw the changes that happened with big tech so and big tech has operated in the same way where you need to grow you need to have and when you serve use surveillance capitalism to control people you got to move very slowly you can’t just you can’t just be like facebook and just barrel out the door at a thousand miles an hour you’re going to get caught and people are going to hate you and have a very low self opinion of you but then you compare responses to companies like google and i’ll throw these two under the bus apple and twitter who move very slowly and they try to spin it as well we’re giving you these benefits but they don’t tell you what the cost of those benefits are like apple is not transparent about the fact the wild garden is a thing google is not transparent about the fact that they sell your information on a regular basis oh no they don’t sell your information they say that access to yours they sell the access to your information about trade the access to information to their knowledge about your information which is the same thing but they sell their knowledge about your information as opposed to or whatever you would like and so in other words it’s like yeah you know we don’t sell your information specifically but we tell a company what you know people like you think and oh you happen to be the only person in this category huh that’s weird but also like i do want to elaborate on that a little bit because i get asked this question a lot by my my co-workers my friends my family they always ask me you know i was talking the other day about like let’s say yoga they’re talking about yoga and and i saw it in an advertisement and no i was talking about and then i saw an advertisement about yoga i have an iphone is my phone listening to me and i simply ask them well do you have a good you have google a google app on your phone and they’re like yeah i have google maps on my phone that’s that’s common that’s a common one i hear and i say well google doesn’t listen to you and apple doesn’t listen to you but what they do do is they make inferences about what you are doing based on your connections with others so for example did you practice yoga with your friend say like yeah i did we even uploaded a video to tick tock about it right well now if google knows that your friend is into yoga and you google can know your location because of google maps they see you go to your friend’s house and oh they just they just happen to make the guess that hey your friends into yoga you and then you guys were together and uploaded a video involving gilgatu tick-tock therefore you must like yoga too and we’ll show you an ad about it yeah and going through this roundabout pattern is not as attractive or click-baity as saying your phone is always listening to you but this is what happens to people every day well the the um the the that’s essentially the the trick to good magic is if you’re doing if you have a good magic trick that you know it’s a good magic trick because it’s so complicated to figure out that by the time you get done explaining it people don’t really think it’s all that interesting anymore if it’s just like one thing that it’s like oh yeah i know exactly what it is like if only i knew that you were doing that one thing i i now understand the whole thing that’s not generally what good magic is it’s generally uh you know a series of various contrived mechanisms that you’ve come up with that allow you to that make this thing look like magic and it’s not pretty behind the scenes and that sort of thing is harder to figure out and is less satisfying for people to to know and understand than if it is one specific thing like oh yes it was my microphone you know it’s like no it was your existence and interaction with the platform and a whole bunch of very complicated algorithms that all talk to each other and like i’ll i’ll bring this up again every if anyone has ever seen christopher nolan’s the prestige the movie begins has a opens of a quote says like a magic trick always involves three parts there’s first the appearance you have to show somebody something right so that’s so you’d show somebody it’s like you show somebody the ad then there’s the there’s the well that well i don’t know if it’s even relevant but it’s like this is probably a really bad analogy but like the the method that he used when he and his brother wrote it it was like you need the act needs to have the appearance and now you have to make that thing disappear and you have to make the audience wonder right and in order for the trick to work you need to make that thing reappear and then you have to make them say wow how did you do that um i don’t remember the exact word i’ll edit it into a video or something but it’s i don’t i don’t want to or you you you you think that like technology is the modern is the modern day magic at least basically like not like and when i say magic i don’t mean like oh like i know a magic card trick i mean like hocus pocus kind of magic like it basically is it’s basically like you know when i when i open a terminal and i i don’t know if i take an arduino and i code it to turn on my lights or to have like a a voice switch i put um uh what is it the the one audio application on it and i i get my arduino to be able to say hey yeah arduino turn on the lights that’s basically magic like it might as well be like the code that i’m doing is basically equivalent to magic i’m doing a a technical kind of secretive uh thing in order to in order to perform an action yeah it’s basically magic then hewler packard even wrote a paper about this last year where they said that there there was a artistic campaign to remove the uh the image a lot of the stereotypical imagery behind what technology is because they argued that more often than not how technology is depicted becomes people in hoodies with text falling down a screen yeah and they said they put out a campaign and said if any artists were willing to do something about this we have a art like a art project you can submit something to and we’re going to pick a winner at the end i don’t remember exactly what ended up being decided but obviously seeing the reading the news today none of it stuck it’s just something i found interesting when i when i read it well i mean like the the the people in hoodies and the changing of opinion i think that’s something that apple is really trying to change right now or i mean you know has been trying to change because they they you know with apple’s walled garden they really want your technology to be the you know they want your iphone and how you interact with their products to just be technology in your head they don’t want you know hack sores to be the default idea of technology they want to be the idea of technology and i don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing i don’t either that’s what scares me this is why apple scares me yeah um yeah so this is the product i’m just showing right now this is the product the project page for hewlett-packard um i believe it’s under it’s called it’s under open ideal it is they basically they basically i don’t i don’t know what happened to the images that ended up being selected but it was like this is the challenge was how can we reimagine more compelling and relatable visual for the language of cyber security never mind like technology that’s even that’s something even more than that and and apple probably is closer to actually doing something about it because they have marketers spend hundreds of millions of dollars every single year to try to find out what works of people whereas every other tech company fumbles that fumbles around and says well will we collect all this data but yeah you still you still can’t market anything for crap because you didn’t invest any money in marketing you invested all your money into stealing people’s data or advertising okay so back on the topic that we were that we originally saw yeah tesla i i guess my perception of tesla is that tesla’s still even though they’re not really anymore they still kind of feel like an underdog and they still feel like a disrupter whereas something like apple apple you know if apple comes out with a new thing well that’s not disrupting we expected apple to come out with a new thing that everyone then decides that they love like oh was it was you know was apple like hip and cool and like you know like you know the new kid on the block when they decided to stop having phone chargers no they did a thing and they were the cool kid that decided to you know wear their their their collar popped and now everyone is wearing their collar popped and doesn’t it doesn’t include a charging brick and that’s not like apple used to be a disrupter and they’re not anymore whereas tesla still feels like a disruptor even though the technology that they’re creating is kind of becoming the norm do you hear what i’m saying yeah i know what you’re saying um i’m just everyone can see this on screen i am trying to bypass a bloomberg paywall and even in the wayback machine there’s a bloomberg paywall so maybe if you looked up um a video of the the matrix rain it would help you it would help you get through the paywall better also also make lots of keyboard sounds that i i hear that helps too are you are you wearing are you wearing your coder hoodie you’re you’re you’re like deep cowled you just take i match me mashing my keyboard close the article um uh i do have a bookmarklet which does search uh google cache that’s not another potential way around it um can’t scroll down though right i think it’s oh that um uh it’s gonna work anymore no it’s the uh open up uh you block origin and there’s like a pop-up that is trying to form and like what’s a little lightning thing with cubelock origin the lightning tool yeah what about it there’s i’ve had an issue on some websites before where there’s supposed to be a pop-up and the lightning tool doesn’t work or the the the pop-up is being blocked by ublock origin which is good but because they stopped at the same place where bloomberg has a special page just for the googlebot version of their site in other words there’s bloomberg has a giant thing you have to have a giant ad space at the top of your thing now is it is is tracking what people put into you not enough is tracking tracking is beautiful tracking is is the way this is not our slash data is beautiful who the heck cares like is it our slash data is beautiful whatever the heck that stupid subreddit um so i i guess what makes tesla doing something what what makes tesla feel different from a different car company or something coming up with similar technology is they feel like a disrupter and they feel more and and plus like what industry is it that they are disrupting they’re not really disrupting the tech industry they’re disrupting the car industry which is a little bit different space than the tech industry because the car industry is like okay these big monolithic tech you know car manufacturers and tesla comes along with their you know rc car that blows the doors off of them and is basically better in every way and yet for whatever reason we aren’t all buying them i i would never i don’t endor i also would recommend everyone stay far and far away from tesla’s cars because of the privacy concerns which is a whole another matter altogether you mean like the camera that’s looking at you when you’re driving never don’t even get me started on that that part of tesla cars never mind the fact they track everywhere you drive or other vehicles you interact with and and your your key to your tesla is your phone yeah which is which is like already already all of those things even just one of them is enough for me to say i am not buying your car like that is ridiculous like i mean if you were right in saying that your phone is your social security number if it wasn’t for the fact that like oh no oh now it’s the key to your life at companies like apple saying oh now it’s the key to your car it’s like no can we not can we not do that please i it’s i mean then again like china’s already doing it just because china’s doing it doesn’t mean you should just because china’s encouraging mass genocide doesn’t mean you should mom all the cool kids are doing genocide it’s no just because they’re overworking their manufacturing force maybe we should do it too no don’t do that like um i i see i i think the the issue with with the way that technology is involved it is evolving right now is there really are kind of there’s it’s not an even playing field and there’s two i i think the the thing the the issue with with us having everything tied to our phones is our phones end up becoming an extension of us to some degree i i i’m looking at the stream and i’m seeing our faces and it’s just it’s too creepy then don’t look at it i i have to stop i have to go away um the the i i think the issue with our phones so far is that they end up becoming an extension of ourselves whereas it removes the fact that technology should be a tool that we use and there’s it’s ultimately i think proper like properly executed technology you need to have uh like by def like built into the way that thing functions you need to have a choice and not be you like the thing needs to be a different entity than you so in other words i have a reddit account my credit account is not me it is a thing that belongs to me it is an alias of mine but it is not me and i can make two reddit accounts and log into them separately and have two different you know personas online and i think that’s properly executed technology but when i am me online to some capacity i think that’s not the that that’s not the role of technology the problem is all of big tech doesn’t like that they want you to yeah you you when you use their technology why does amazon want you to use an account i mean obviously they need to collect payment but it’s more to them an amazon account is more than just that it’s so they can collect habits about how you shop where you watch your movies how you use their cloud platform where wha what the heck you’re even saying in your own home because you bought a 50 device and put it in your living room yeah and it’s it’s the fact that you have all of that connected information of this eye that’s looking at you and all of your aspect all the aspects of your existence that’s just not it’s it is something that is more aware of you than you are and given that you don’t have access to the aggregated information that they collect about that i mean it would be one thing if you had access to that aggregated information like you know i don’t know if i if i had access to the weird ads that facebook would give me because of how i use their platform maybe uh i wouldn’t do those things like if people said hey yeah um so we’ve noticed that you like all of these kinds of videos uh we’re gonna you know this is the kind of person that we’re pegging you as uh some people might say wow i i don’t like that i’m gonna change my viewing habits and the problem is people don’t have access to that information and so you have this big corporation or you know this this eye in the sky that’s looking at you that in a way is like out it’s like outside of your control it’s like almost like god in a sense because i know you’ve made the analogy of comparing big tech to gods that we just give somebody’s big brother which i mean i don’t like that i know you read 1984 is basically no i i just i actually strongly disagree with the fact that big tech is big brother and i really wish we could get rid of that analogy because i don’t think it properly encompasses what big tech has become like if i were to define big tech and i highly recommend everyone read this book it is adults huxley’s brave new world it’s the only good book he wrote he wrote another crap book called the island that came afterwards and i’ve i’ve read brave new world okay um that that’s good you can get so you at least have an idea um brave for those who don’t know brave new world is a book about it’s another one of those because it was really popular at the time got published in a newspaper in a british newspaper it’s about the it’s about the idea of why does a dictatorship need to present itself be something like stalinism and present itself as a dictatorship why can’t a dictatorship be something which allows people to engorge in the worst parts of themselves and pacify themselves right and that’s what that’s what big tech essentially is they they throw all these pretty things up at you to distract you and say look at what we’re doing like facebook is the worst about this they you know they say like look at us connecting the world that’s that’s that’s one thing they love to say look at how we’re connecting the world look at all these cool things we’re doing or like youtube saying look at all these content creators or look at how much we know look at how much we can do for all these free services we can offer you but in reality what they’re doing is they’re doing something more insidious on that and that because in you using their products it’s just like how people in brave new world consumes this substance called soma which is something they take to pacify themselves if they feel like stressed rather than actually coping with their emotions it’s turning i mean brave new world is all about how human or humans are kind of being turned into cattle or like you know pawns in pawns for a larger entity to use as pieces and you know there there’s a basic understanding that we have as humans that we shouldn’t be used as pawns um which i think is a good one i mean i don’t think humans should be used to spawns and i think humans should have respect for other humans fundamentally and large and bigger entities than us that have control over us do not necessarily have that same you know guttural instinct to want to preserve humanity and preserve us and i think in brave new world it’s it’s highlighting kind of the op the other side of what 1984 is highlighting and that’s that’s you know 1984 is highlighting you know the evil side of like the the depressing view of of some large all-powerful entity whereas brave new world is highlighting you know the happy sparkly drugged up version of the same entity but you know kind of the the uh the the uh the naive version of the same entity um in a sense no i i agree with you it’s um it’s the it’s the sheep’s cl if if brave new world is about the is about the is is about like the like the worst part parts that everyone sees about technology or about about like politics right like brave new world is supposed to be the the wolf in sheep’s clothing and like if you ever see like those bubbly like things about like google’s campus and be like wow look at all this this is so pretty and then uh i read a book a couple years ago it was like how to get hired by google and the questions they ask you are just like complete completely stupid questions like like why the heck would you ask someone the like stuff like this and it’s like stuff like you’re being shrunk to the size of a penny your mass is kept the same you’re thrown into a blender you have 60 seconds before the blade starts spinning and pulverize you what do you do um uh unscrew the screw that holds the blender in place you can’t you’re stuck in the blender bowl see this is what i’m telling you like this is it’s like and then they put up this veneer that it’s like really hard to get in but really what they’re doing is they’re just being jerks and asking you dumb questions like you shouldn’t want to work for a company that asks you of you dumb questions just to work for them because like um there’s if a guy can write an entire book on the stupid questions google asks you then like why should i want to work with them this sounds like a terrible company to work for if they’re just if this is just the entry exam well i mean the the weird questions that google asks you are intended to be weird they’re intended to be weird because they want to ask you a question that is so outside so far outside of anything that you’ve thought about that the the that you are are giving them an opinion on an idea that you’ve never thought of before so something that that it you know this is a new thing and they want to see how it is that your brain handles that topic which is i mean you know i think it’s actually a pretty decent recruiting strategy i think the issue with google is like there’s they are trying to introduce a new idea of what is considered normal like this is our world view and we want to indoctrinate you into our world view with like you know campus i mean apple does the same thing and it’s there’s i think if we’re drawing the analogy back tonight or back to to brave new world the thing about brave new world is if you lived in that society and you just accepted that that was how the world functioned you’d be fine like the thing is is in the con it is if your reality is as you define it to be you can in brave new world you can define your reality to be what it is that you were told your reality is in which case you’re fine and happy and copacetic and there’s nothing you have to worry about but if you have any understanding of an absolute reality as opposed to your personal reality then there’s a lot of really bad things that happen and maybe you should be concerned about that but the question is whether or not you believe that there is an absolute reality or a subjective reality and so if you take that and you apply that to big tech or you know big tech is the thing or the things that big tech is doing are they absolutely wrong is there like some greater truth that they are violating or is that or or is their opinion just a different view of the world that you just haven’t become that you haven’t understood as as an enlightened view and i i think it’s a mixed bag i think most people are in the post-modern boat because it’s not completely they’re fully bad that’s it’s not they’re fully bad or fully like good it’s they are like there are good things they do and there are bad things they do i i i would argue that that means far away the good but it it i i would say i would say post-modernism is is utter crap because like you but i mean in the context of like of looking at big tech um i would say that that that the truth the truth that big tech violates is probably the the idea that that autonomy is in is i would say that there is a sense that people have that autonomy is important is isn’t you know could be considered an absolute truth and big technology in general is not of that mind and because they fundamentally do anything or because they they would prefer they would prefer that you only go to them and no one else the in the sense that like google would prefer like i can do whatever i want but i don’t have i can’t choose it like with google if i’m or it with apple if i’m inside apple’s ecosystem like my iphone belongs to me it’s registered to my apple account and i have you know theoretically one apple account and so apple gets to track everything that i do and so i don’t really have you know i i don’t really i am not an individual inside of this this network i am a cog and i think that removes the individual’s autonomy and i think that that google has a a similar view that you you are a cog inside of the greater working machine you know you are you’re just there yeah you’re just a number but you were not a you individually you’re not important and there is a sense that people have that they individually are important and even if that’s not necessarily true it’s not something that people it is not a a position that you should put people in you people should be individually important and should be allowed to consider themselves individually important and it’s kind of nihilistic to say oh well you’re not important frankly and i think that’s the that’s the thing that big tech violates is it it basically has that nihilistic view of oh you aren’t important just so you know um because i know we were talking about this just and this was like a long time ago but we were talking about like how like you when you look at a lot of technology companies it’s like you can look at them like political alignment correct right because the the the initial one we came up with while we were because we were just brainstorming and we were thinking well how would we look at a company like say apple well you said apple is like the ultimate epitome of communism because you buy your way into the system you you essentially sell yeah freedom to to m1 it’s like yeah you know it’s like oh well you don’t need a different you don’t need more or less processing power you need the exact amount of processing power that the m1 has and we’ll we’ll just put it in everything and so you don’t need to think about how much processing power you need you just need the m1 that you need you need the the government solution the the single individual solution to the problem which is communism because there’s only one solution that’s the way of the the way of the people i was told but to you by the way and then then on top of that oh oh well there’s something that we don’t provide well you need to think about why you it’s not that you need this thing it’s that you need to think about why you don’t need this thing like it’s not that we haven’t provided something for you it’s that you have requested something that’s unreasonable to ask for which is communism like like the thing the thing with the the the subtitle file that i made the the so uh so the thing so apple has this i’ll explain it to the anyone who ends up listening to this so you know they they have the context for it apple has this thing where subtitles can be where uh where if you were watching sup or if you were watching videos with a subtitle with subtitles those subtitles can either be generated in the video itself or at the system level controlled through accessibilities the accessibility closed captioning and the problem with the accessibility closed captioning is it’s controlled separately from the the videos closed captioning and so sometimes if there’s an error of some variety which there are numerous ways that it can cause the error this you’ll get dual sets of subtitles on uh on a file or on on your video and there is no way to turn off apple’s subtitles so the the the problem is that apple thinks that their their subtitle you know their subtitle implementation will never break they’re you know it is foolproof you know you know you will have this and it will just work and in their infinite wisdom they did not put an off button on their subtitles to just disable them to just not allow whatever the application is to access subtitles and as a result of that sometimes you sometimes you are stuck having two sets of subtitles so what i did is i just created a subtitle file that’s invisible so the text is exactly like you know you know it’s text it’s readable it’ll still print theoretically but it’s a hundred percent transparent because apple’s idea of transparency is it can only be 0.2 yeah transparent yeah and and the it and again apple in their infinite wisdom said oh well you wouldn’t want your subtitles to be invisible you want them to be to be translucent you want to be able to see each of these aspects well maybe not but uh thanks so they didn’t the according to their interface there is no way to disable the subtitles completely and so i just created a work around i had no idea this was even a thing by the way yeah apparently this was mind-blowing to me and i had never heard of anyone having this problem but then i looked online like nine to five nine to five mac forms and like apple support and it’s real this is a real thing people people do yeah and people have been complaining about it since like 2010 and it’s like thanks apple it’s been over a decade do you think you can you can give us a toggle no no okay okay thanks what’s more puzzling to me is every what i don’t understand is how everyone who uses an apple computer has the same hardware yet some there are some people who experience bugs that other people don’t do you know why it’s because apple again in their infinite wisdom doesn’t don’t expect their product to ever have an issue so like i know their uh like i’ve had issues before with you know icloud breaking since i have a very very old icloud account and sometimes there’s there are settings in icloud some of them that you as the user don’t have access to changing i don’t know what they are but i know that they exist and sometimes simply by logging in to your icloud account on a new iphone don’t not restoring from backup not doing anything to the device causes the device to experience the same like the same glitches that that get carried down from from things that shouldn’t have been there and there’s not a way to you know just hit the reset button because apple doesn’t deem that you need a reset button because their products never break it’s simply that you’ve done something you weren’t supposed to do and apple refuses to admit that oh well maybe maybe we need to start over and it’s like you do realize the technology needs to be restarted right we said this last week of imessage too how like the vast majority of the exploits that pegasus is taking advantage of on iphones is all imessage related sms related you need to have your phone number and send you a specially crafted message and imessage or like that as an sms message or through whatsapp or any any or signal any anything along those lines and one thing that that they were told to really huddly by some researchers who who looked at it afterwards they were like apple’s trying really hard but boy oh boy do apple and google need to be trying harder than they already are yeah because there is real world consequences for people where this sort of thing matters um yeah i’ve actually experienced an issue recently with the the beta version of ios where phone calls just won’t go through sometimes and it’s clearly an issue with apple and apple not implementing things correctly and it’s like um do you think you might want to fix these things and there sometimes i you know i’ll even submit a uh submit a ticket or submit a feedback saying hey yeah um there’s this problem with the beta do you think you can fix it here are the logs here here here’s the issue and it doesn’t get fixed because apple is just like not not worth it and it’s like you have billions of dollars of of of of budgeting why they can’t admit they’re wrong they’ll never admit yeah and that’s the thing is is it is part of apple’s like the way apple does things to never admit that they did something incorrect even if it does get them into trouble they still refuse to admit that they’re wrong like last last year or is it two years ago now i’m i’m getting old um google project zero researcher i mentioned this last last time we streamed google project zeros uh ian ian ian beer um he is uh he is part of google’s uh advanced threat team that looks at some stuff that related to like security problems and other major products but as well as google google’s own products and they released a very long written expose about how the chinese government was abusing iphone vulnerabilities in the wild against uyghurs and uighur rights activists and he they the report that he and his team wrote was incredibly incredibly detailed like the stuff that you had to do to get make something hop from like a safari page to the kernel level of an iphone is insane like there you you wouldn’t even think it was possible but they they found a way to make it possible and they there is and they showcase five different exploits that they were being used that were all being done over a period of four years up till 2019 which was when the report was published and they also listed all of the domains that the chinese government was using and almost all the domains were used you can just tell by the wording of them was meant to target people trying to fight for weaker rights and the report comes out and it’s not good like you read through you read through it and at the report ends with ian beer saying you know apple you you could easily like fix this problem if you make the controls for this sort of thing visible to normal people and make your phones designed so like the security designed for these people and not add in more features that don’t need to be there you can’t just you know like allow people to have access to changing such things right so like apple is incredibly hostile towards security researchers and and towards things and and towards acknowledging that things could have gone wrong so like one thing that safari on ios doesn’t let you do is hey i want to delete my cookies not everything on the entire app like hey yeah i have active tabs open and i have history and stuff that you know i might want access to later but i want to delete all of my cookies nope can’t do it there’s not a button for that there’s a delete website data period across the board you have to click three times in the settings menu just to do that you can’t do it in the app but because it you know it closes everything that you have open and it deletes all of your history and it does it across all of your devices a lot of people don’t do it and so you can’t actually so it’s kind of like they’re holding your cookie data hostage it’s like hey yeah there’s this thing that i want or this thing that i might find useful but in order to uh in order to use it i have to you know sacrifice something and it’s it’s it’s apple like not admitting that they’re that they’ve done something wrong it’s like oh yes you can you can you can do this we’ll allow it to exist well it’s funny because like the response they had to ian beers publication and to be clear like because google project zero has n is not paid for google to do this they do this because chrome has a is chrome in ios is based off of safari so they are responsible for the security of their users and this is something they noticed so like it is in their better interest to tell the world because they told apple and apple didn’t do anything and because apple didn’t do anything now they told then they went and told the whole world that this is well that’s happening that’s kind of how security research works is you say look i found this vulnerability you report it um you have a deadline to report this by and if you don’t i’m going to tell everyone else about it because this is a vulnerability and people need to hear about it right and the the statement that apple released the week afterwards was incredibly tone deaf like this is this is what it said first the sophisticated attack was narrowly focused not based on a broad based exploit of iphones on mass as it was described ah yes because the two million uyghurs in china is a small population the effects the attack affected nearly a dozen websites that focused on content related to the uyghur community it was actually actually apple it was 120 but they don’t talk about that there regardless of the scale of the attack we take your safety and security very seriously google’s post issued six months after ios patches were released created a false impression of mass exploitation to quote monitor the private activities of entire populations in real time iso stoke is meant to stoke fear among all iphone users that their devices have been compromised this was never the case no apple it was the case they provided domains and people confirmed it it was real it it kind of sounds like someone that is describing exactly what they did with air quotes around around it as if it’s not what they they did but it is and it’s lighted it’s like like do you mean to say that you think i did this thing in this capacity and that was wrong and it’s like yes yes i do like it’s ridiculous and then like like they should have gotten like more mainstream media attention over this too i was like the only place i saw this was in a statement that was released ars technica technically on their website and i don’t think it’s even up anymore because that’s that’s the way apple is actually no it is still up it was from september 2019 yeah it is still up and it’s really sharp basically it’s incredibly tone deaf like apple is like just they’re disgusting and then this is from nicholas weaver who is one of the lead computer researchers at university university uc berkeley he writes this on twitter the thing that bugs me the most about apple these days is that they’re all in one on the chinese market and refuse to say something like a government with the intent of ethnic cleansing a minority population conducting a mass hacking attack on our users because in that entire their entire statement the chinese government is not mentioned at all because they don’t they care about their bottom line first and foremost not the fact that the government that’s responsible for controlling the portion of their revenue is actively trying to abuse them [Music] yeah and yeah i i think that there’s i i think the the thing with a company is though a company is an independent entity and they can you know say oh yes you know that that’s not something that that we are supposed to do companies kind of act as the voice of the people it to a degree in the sense that hey yeah i by using this platform amy a denizen of this society you know this this group i i have made denizen of youtube and of apple and of not of facebook um but you know someone conceivably might be in which case there’s a degree to which facebook kind of has an there’s an expectation that people have of those uh of those organizations that they will have an opinion similar to them so in other words i don’t know if um and and there’s a degree to which corporations do things like that that they they express opinions that that that agree with their user base and i think that you know when the user base largely considers um yeah we don’t we don’t like uh genocide we we think that’s bad we don’t like uh concentration camps and stuff um i i think that there’s an expectation that companies like apple would or have should condemn behavior like that and then they don’t and it’s um yeah i don’t know what to do about that other than change the public perception but the real like the only way and this is why i have stood by this for years the only way to properly counter big tech is to get yourself out of their grip and i and i will stand by that we need to move away from from surveillance capitalist platforms like apple and google maybe not really apple you know like google and amazon and microsoft i think i think the answer is for people to develop an understanding so like we have an innate understanding of social relationships and like in a group you basically understand how how it is that you were supposed to act and how it is that you’re not supposed to act and that’s just like ingrained into your understanding of being a human and i think society hasn’t understood society doesn’t have a basic understanding of how it is we should all act together in social media and together in you know as the hive mind and if we can because ultimately the way that you combat a system like that is if humanity became you know as a as an aggregate became resistant to companies having a practice like that um then the companies would have to change but it it has to be as a result of people changing and their platf and and their their the you know the their policy no longer working right you got to hit them where it hurts seal yeah it’s tough love like i’ll come back when you fix your problem and right now none of big tech has fixed their problems because they have no incentive to so the only way to make them change is to make them hurt that’s the way you make them hurt i have rid myself of all of big tech in my personal life with the exception of apple and that is changing very soon after once i develop my own sms reflector then i can finally say goodbye apple i am never buying one of your stupid phones again um i i i would say that like like you could say someone is like well behaved in public or like has good manners um sure and and if someone has good manners then what does that mean well it means that they know how to act in a social group like if you’re in public they know how to act when they are around other human beings right you don’t go around spotting people or kicking them but the problem what is like platforms like twitter and facebook all facebook’s properties youtube comments section is another good example of this of people going around and doing nothing like how they would behave if they were on the street in public and that’s the other thing is good manners like like when you think about someone with good manners are you thinking about like on a person that individually is acting correctly like you know that’s just like a good person or are you thinking about like i don’t know think about like high british culture and like you know the proper way of doing things well we don’t really have a proper way of doing things there’s not like a principled way that we have to interact with society like interact with social platforms and theoretically if we had you know a formalized principled way of doing things that was yes this is the traditional principled way of doing it if you’re not doing things this way then uh you have bad manners and kind of you’re looked down upon for not doing it that way if we developed that then we could develop a you know a dialogue online that didn’t need to be moderated in the same way that it does right now because like you know i don’t know if it’s principled to say hey yeah when you have trolls you uh either ignore them or down vote them well then they wouldn’t make it to the top or it’s like hey if you have clickbait you ignored or downvoted uh well they wouldn’t make it to the top then if that was just the understanding that everyone had but the problem is we don’t really have that understanding yeah and then i look at things like like macedon for example right we’re on mastodon by the way it’s in our in our twitch description you can go look at it um the principle they’ve used is you can even if you get banned from one mastodon website you you still have act you are guaranteed to and you are required to have access to your stuff so you can transfer it to another platform because they’re not supposed to own you and in order for and for like that to work that means that you need to have your own freedom there is no algorithm a mastodon that controls anything it only happens by the network together deciding this is what we want everyone needs to say well what’s the trending unmastered on today hashtag guide because someone decided i want to show people how to install gen 2 on at least on our instance that’s what i saw the other day that’s just an example of like this is what the people on our instance have decided but then you look at massive out of a hole and then the rest of marcia donald hall is not talking about stuff like that so if you think about about principled and like how the idea of principles came about it was because you know the nobles were doing something that was their particular way of doing something and then the the bourgeois class copied that and then the common people copied that and it’s this idea that people were looking up to a group that were their role models and then all started to copy them because they all kind of liked those people or like wanted to be those people and so if we had influencers that weren’t acting like dicks online and and weren’t you know like you know logan paul or whatever posting troll videos and we looked down on individuals like that well then then if all of our our influencers were proper individuals then we would at least have an understanding of what proper conduct was but i think a lot of the younger generation doesn’t really have understanding what proper conduct is it’s just like oh yeah you know people online are doing it this way so i think it’s okay to do things that way i’m gonna tell you why it’s not true why i think that is i i can speak from experience because a few of my friends are elementary school teachers or preschool teachers or like one one of my friends she’s a middle school teacher um i i put this forth because i think about all four of them and from the two that are elementary school teachers and the one that’s a middle school teacher they do not know how to use their computers at all that’s thing number one thing number two they’re incredibly involved with social media right social media which is like facebook and instagram and tick tock all of which are designed to be incredibly addictive to keep people watching and get ads rolling right and number three all of their schools have their kids indoctrinated over chrome books because if you get them hooked while they’re young they’re going to be the investment that google’s making for the future which is why they’re releasing things like that stupid overpriced pixel book that’s like a thousand dollars i don’t know their target generation is that generation that grew up of chromebooks can you pull up youtube trending on right now just yeah just trending on the video oh let’s start let’s look at trending um just youtube.com i think yeah just youtube.com at least according to where they think i am yeah all right which is um usa ss sniper wolf inside edition mr jeet uh mr beast’s react channel daily dose of the internet this lady appears twice oh wow she must be popular wait what is the point you’re trying and something about the olympics by nbc what what uh my my point is that you know if you actually cycle through uh uh wait is this actual trending or is this just youtube and this is the real trending of of youtube i there’s no i am not logged in there’s no there’s no catch here i don’t use youtube on my on my computer this is this is this is it the point of trying to make some hyenas is if you just go to youtube’s trending for most things it’s kinda sucks it’s like really bad click baby videos and or even if they’re like fairly decent clickbaity videos they’re just kind of it’s kind of just crap it’s not it’s not i mean like the the one thing that i see on there that is actually educational content is um yeah it’s kurtz kazakh and kurtz kazakh is like oh yeah you know kirk’s gazak is is pretty pretty decent okay you know the olympics but like i mean you know i mean the the half the stuff that shows up on trending i mean like there was a reason why you know the what is it now like two years ago logan paul like recorded someone that like hung themselves on those three yeah but like there’s a reason that showed up and it showed up because of the trending because yeah on trending because because they were enraged and one of the mass dislike the video but you and there’s a lot of them doesn’t care because to the youtube algorithm even if people dislike your video it qualifies as engagement so if you go and i guess just like a video what you’re actually doing is you’re helping the person because likes and dislikes don’t matter at the end of the day because what they really show is that someone engaged with your video and engagement is what matters more to these platforms and but and see that’s the thing is like i look at a lot of these videos and go those are crap videos why why is this on trending and it’s because fun and you say well why why are some of these crap videos and it’s like i can’t tell you exactly why they’re bad but we all kind of understand that they’re bad and youtube doesn’t have that same perspective because i wanted and so that’s 19 wasn’t a hoax because it’s totally going to sway the opinion of someone who thinks it is like this is ridiculous and it’s and it’s because there isn’t a because youtube and like other platforms aren’t feeding people that it doesn’t have an understanding of quality content of like actual quality content it has an understanding of how people interact with content but not of what content is quality and i think that that kind of destroys how people like interact with with you know it interact with one another because theoretically if we had an unders if we all had a like a unified understanding of what was good and gravitated towards those things then the platforms you know youtube would eventually learn to reward that sort of behavior or if youtube had if youtube hasn’t had an understanding of what was good you know like like quality it could then show that to individuals or to to people and people would learn this sort of thing but you know when you have when when someone is given a platform of you know with them making a uh who what’s the one girl with the the ketchup and the the the face it’s like you know click baby that’s one of the videos that showed up uh if you have what’s the thing where is it i don’t know when you have when you have really bad click baby videos i think it it kind of reinforces to people that that sort of that sort of behavior is okay because it’s the thing that they are consuming on a daily basis because they click on it once and they say hey yeah i saw someone do something really crappy um i that that is okay behavior for me to have you know i see people trolling people online that’s fine i’m like public freak out and say like yeah that’s i want to be just like that exactly or i mean even even if they say oh i don’t want to be just like that that is part of their understanding of humanity now that oh yeah you know some people act that way and i and and you know i’m i’m okay with the i understand that that that is the world as it exists and we kind of need to say no it’s not okay that some people act this way like you know it’s it’s it this this sort of thing shouldn’t be allowed and we all need to have a unified opinion around that and i i guess that’s not something that i really feel gets fed to to the average person that isn’t thinking about it and and plus the idea of thinking about the media that you were consuming isn’t something that the average person is considered or it is considering thinking about um i think for me it’s
