Ohio surpasses 5,000 new COVID-19 cases in a single day; cases in schools rise

jeff well two days after reporting more than four thousand cases for the first time in eight months time ohio has now surpassed 5 000 new infections in a single day lead investigator brian duggar joining us here in studio tonight to discuss the new cases and also to take a look at students and breakthrough data so brian it’s hard to bring out these numbers that don’t shock us anymore but 5 395 that is a big number today what can you tell us about it yeah i mean the speed that we’re going up really is shocking to me i mean two days ago we had over 4 000 cases for the first time since january and today like you just said i mean more than 5 000 cases so what’s driving it i mean the positivity rate is still 9.4 percent and when you go back to the last couple days it’s over 10 percent so what we’re going to see it’s probably not going to be tomorrow but i would guess that next week we’re going to see even higher numbers schools have been back for a couple of days now here in our region what is the latest data show about student infections yeah you know i’m actually going to have to go back and do the math on this but when i counted there were 1239 new infections in schools and we’re talking about 332 teachers and this is not cumulative this is just in the past week that’s about a 500 percent gain from the last last week and i don’t even think this is a true number because lucas county and wood county actually did not report any cases and i know that’s not correct and we have heard over the last 24 48 hours a number of school districts that are flipping the script and they are now going to mask mandates people wonder about those breakthrough infections what is that data showing yeah we had more than a thousand hospitalizations in the last week and 94 of those hospitalizations were in people who were unvaccinated we had 70 deaths over the past week and 65 of those were unvaccinated so when you go back to january 1st at 97.725 percent of hospitalization are unvaccinated and more than 99 percent of deaths are unvaccinated all right brian duggar lead investigator here at wtol making sense of the numbers for us tonight brian thanks
