Pens In Use – August 2021 Wrapup – Pens Between $50 and $100 AUD

hi this is gary welcome to today’s video well isn’t time flying by nearly the end of august spring here in the southern hemisphere well it’s just around the corner and i can tell you this i can’t wait today we’re going to take a look at the pens that i’ve been using during august i’ll give you some brief impressions about how i got on with them and then i’m going to rate them from six being my least favorite all the way up to number one which was my most favorite pen during august of 2021 and i know most favorite not very good english is it but you know what i mean so join me now down on the mat let’s take a look at these pens and i’ll discuss them in some detail with you so here we are down on the mat it’s time to jump in and start rating these pens so at position number six this month it goes to this this is the fremantle markets handmade pen i’m just going to move the paper up a bit there we go now we can see the entry on the sheet now i do love the color of this pen i think it looks a really nice i mean i’m just going to slowly spin this around here you know we’ve got that gorgeous gray we’ve got the silver sparkles we’ve got like yellow and gold colors really nice looking pen and to be honest it’s not overly bad when i’m writing with it if i post it there you know it sits quite nicely in my hand not overly long not overly heavy unpasted for me a little bit on the short side but it’s still nice so why is this coming at position number six well let me fetch in my tommy river paper here we go this is tomi river 52 gsm this is where i collect my thoughts as i’m going along through the month you know look at this the way it writes we’ve got loads of gorgeous shading coming through but this ink it’s got a gold shimmer to it and i don’t see any of that coming out no matter what paper that i’m writing on it doesn’t look too bad on here but when i was writing on my other notepads and that could be the optic paper rhodia clairefontaine cheap ones i got from kmart i get a lot of hard starts and i get a lot of skipping i did try smoothing the nib a bit because i thought well could be to do with baby’s bottom something like that didn’t make any difference i was still getting that the other thing i was getting again unfortunately doesn’t show up on here is when i was writing on my downlines so like on an l you know here here on the t’s and the h’s where i was going down i would actually see that it’s railroading so i think the issue here is with the nip i did also have some ink flow issues so if i left it a couple of days if i went back to start using it again but i ended up having to pram the food because it just would not write at all no matter what i did i think what i need to do to really help with a lot of this is i need to strip this pen down completely and give it a really good cleaning and hopefully that will solve it for future videos when i take this all into account of the pens that i was using this month this definitely was the least favorable of the experiences so all that means for this month this comes in at position number six so position number five this month what we have we’ve got this here this is a pen bbs four five six again it’s another pen i love the looks of it here we you know let’s look at that just slowly turn it around so this is in the cloud pattern you know i think it’s really nice it’s slightly translucent it’s empty at the moment which is why we can’t see but if you’ve got a dark in there when you’re doing this you can really see it sloshing around it’s a vacuum filler again one of the issues i’ve had with this is i’ve struggled with the vacuum plunger now what i find i’m going to actually show you i’m going to take the section off it takes a few turns so here’s the inside i don’t know if we can get this positioned on the camera there we go so inside we’ve got this metal rod and what you do is you unscrew the top and as you pull it down that rod goes down and when you push it down it creates or it should create a vacuum and then when it gets near the bottom it widens out and it sucks the in-cap this has never worked for me i’ve really struggled with this so i actually took off the rubber seal that was using to create the vacuum so i no longer use this as a vacuum filler i use it as an eye dropper which is fine i was quite happy with that decision but the issue i’m getting you can still see at the bottom there of that steel that’s quite wide and what i was finding is when the rods down even though this valve might be open it was still blocking the flow of ink coming through so i would write half a page and then the ink would run out so i’m going to have to strip this down completely and look at this bar and see if i can do anything about that bottom of there just to really get rid of it obviously i can’t take the bar out completely because that means that then ink would be able to come out here i suppose i could maybe put some super glue or something in there to seal it but i don’t like that idea so this is a pen i’m going to have to strip down and it’s such a shame because as a writer i’ve really enjoyed it let me just pop this back together then i’ll fetch in the tommy river paper there’s loads of threads on this and all i’ve done is i’ve just put a bit of silicone grease to make sure i don’t get any leaking so let me fetch in the tomai river paper here we go pen bbs 456 with that rubber toaster totti love the color of this really do but even on here you can see starting off dark but as i go down the page it’s getting lighter and lighter now at the bottom here i said i forgot to open the valve it wasn’t i needed to manipulate it so when i’ve actually been writing with this i’ve been pulling that valve at the top let me again let me show you i’ve been pulling this all the way up like that and having to write with it like that so clumsy but that’s the only way i could seem to get that constant ink flow which is such a shame because again it’s nice looking pen it feels nice in the hand it just lets you me down on this writing so for that reason i’ve had to mark it down which means it comes in today at position number five let me just move this up there we go so you can see i do put it in the right box unlike last month where i was putting all my numbers in their own boxes so position five pen bbs 456 and robert ostertorki just move the paper down we can actually see the remaining four then all together so position number four this is where it started getting hard now to try and pick between them i’ve decided to go for this which is the twsb 580 diamond with a broad nib and that glorious dye mine autumn oak ink i love the pen i love the trisby 580. not not quite my favorite twisty but i still really like it it’s got this gorgeous broad nib nice pain where it’s easy to change the nibs as well which is really good it’s a demonstrator there we can still see there’s some of that dye mine ultimate ink left in there one of the beauties about these twisters they take so much ink and they just last and last and last it’s a good workhorse pen but it’s not an outstanding pen you know it looks nice it feels nice it writes nice but it’s not something that you’re gonna go wow look at that it does what it says on the box it writes and it writes well so let me fetch in the tomah river paper here we go so the twispy 580 i love it look at this color it’s gorgeous it’s got that nice i would say tending more a little towards a golden brown rather than a deep brown lovely shading coming through i don’t know if we can see down here you know as i said it’s the first time i’ve used this ink but look at the shading coming through really nice it’s really nicer than i was expecting but again it doesn’t shout out to me it doesn’t say gary use the sink i mean it’s a nice ink and i will use it again in other pens i may even use it again in this pen but it’s not one of those things that just jumps out grabs you and says right with me still nice enough though so again i’ve got to think about that when i’m doing my ratings which means for this month at position number four is this twisby diamond 580. so we’re now into the top three this is where the going gets tough i can tell you because i’ve really had to be very picky because i love all these pens to be honest i love the ones that are in four five and six but this top three they were all so nice what i’ve had to do though is make some choices so position and number three i’ve decided we’ll go to the pen bbs 487 now i will be honest with you this is one of my favorite pens i’m just going again look look at them colors yes we’ve got the dark blue here of the ink which was dye mine oxford blue this pen ink just lasts and lasts and lasts normally on one full of this even using it virtually every day i can get between two and three months of use from one fill just seems to go on and on and on you know it’s got a fine nib and it’s a pen bbs nip but still is such a nice writer up till this month i’ve only ever had colour versus supernova in this pen but i thought for a change i was going to use dye mine oxford blue and i really like it i like the pen if i was going to make a complaint about the ink for me it is just slightly too dark it’s still nice i still enjoy using it but i find on cheaper papers it just looks virtually black so that’s one of the game one of the issues one of the things i’ve got to pull it up on it’s a lovely writer it’s really nice there’s not a lot of character in the writing but it’s a fine nib and i don’t really think that the ink is a very good shading ink anyway but i still like it i still like to write with it it was nice and smooth but it was a fine and my personal choices is i’ve been moving away from fine pens it’s still lovely to write with and it’s one of those pens that i’ve always got inked up and put onto one side so i can quickly grab it if i need it so let me fetch in the tom i ripper paper here we go and this is what i was saying there’s very little in the way of shading in this it’s nice i mean it’s a really nice blue a bit too dark i’ve caught that on in the first line i have tried this on a cream paper and to be honest i think on a cream paper it does look quite nice i’ve always enjoyed using this i’m again calling out i do prefer the color verse supernova but that’s because it’s that paler blue so i think the darkness of the blue in this pen well that’s what was causing me not to like it as much still really nice a nice wet pen really nice for taking long form notes as well the ink tends to dry in about a minute so although i can’t be instantly flipping over a page there’s enough drying time in there to allow me to carry on on multiple pages without really losing track of where i’m going on my thoughts we’ve got to give it a rating so that’s why for this month this comes in at position number three position number two goes to the moon man m800 this has got the fine bok nib now remember the moon man m800 comes with two choices of nibs now they have the moon man nib which is fine or you can have the bottleneck which again is fine this one i went with the bot i do have the moon man nib as well in here we put the dye mine ochre this pen ran out of ink in about two weeks rather than refill it i then actually switched to this one here this is a moonman m800 you may recognize it from the amber one obviously it’s in purple but it also has that fine bok nib so i thought yeah it’s slightly cheating because it is a different pen but it’s the same type of pen with the same type of name so i thought well i’ll get away with that now i forgot to write down the name of the ink in that ink color but it was dye mine mon bodo’s hat now hopefully i spot that right because i’m forever switching my bees and my ds in the name of the zinc but it’s a really nice purple as we’ll see in a second i enjoy this pen similar to the 487 it’s one of my favorite pens and it’s the pen that got me into leonardo’s so that was partly why i actually bought the m800 because i’d seen the leonardo’s and i loved the lot that i was really humming and hiring how would it feel in the hand the m800s let me actually check that because they’re more or less a copy of a leonardo momento zero so let’s bring in the tommy river paper here we go with the diamine ochre really nice some nice shading coming through it’s a bit of a fine line this is one of the things which i don’t like about it it’s only available in that fine nib and yes i know i can change the nib it’s a number six nib it’s easy enough to change but for what i was trying to do here i’ve left it as is look at the shading coming through this is really nice this dye mine worker really nice shading in this pen tried on different papers i try all my pens on different papers i’ve not had an issue with any paper be it the clef fontaine the rhodia the optic the tomai river are the cheaper notepads that i use it just performs and writes really well just going to flip the page there we go so this is that purple one with the mon i didn’t have either right or wrong here it’s had them on doubles i’m on bottles i really struggle with it so if i ever use this thing you might find these names get used interchangeably beautiful though lovely purple link again we’re getting some character coming through we’ve got the the lightness here then we go straight into some dark colors all without me pausing so it just keeps going i don’t know if you can see on here let me just move this up a bit i must have been in a funny mood that day it’s a shame that fountain pens don’t have built-in spell correction as my spelling is terrible today i think we can maybe all sympathize with that in one way or another but yeah really nice absolutely love it just a little bit on the thin side because it’s got that fine nib so that means i’ve had to really mark it down because of that so this comes in at position number two that means by default we can see what the winner is it’s the narwhal school kill the pattern on this is called chromos teal again it’s another one i love the looks of it straight on that round we’ve got browns in there we’ve got some silver we’ve got blues or turquoise really nice it’s got a lovely nice nib on there it’s a medium nib i would like to be able to get this in abroad but unfortunately i can’t fits really nice in the hand it does post but it posts onto the filling mechanism which is a piston filler so i never actually use this poster because i can just see me going along twisting this as i’m trying to take the lid off and end up with ink all over the place i like that it’s got the ink window down here that means i can see how much ink is left in there so i know if i’m going to have enough if i’m really going to be doing a longer note writing session really nice really it’s not an overly heavy pen but it’s not an overly light pen either i love the looks of this i love the color of it i love the way it feels in the hand i love the dye mine marine ink it’s got that little hint of green in there especially when compared with the rubber toaster tortilla unfortunately i can’t get both of them on the page at the same time let me just see no the torquey it’s got that a little bit more blue in it whereas the marine got a bit more green as you can see from my drying times it’s not an earthly wetting again nicer for those longer note taking sessions i’ll just fetch in the tommy river paper here we go again just look at the color of that ink and i’m gonna keep saying this time after time not a lot of shading that i can see in here which is a bit of a shame there is some but not as much as with some of the other rings so that’s one of the things which does let it down a little bit but not enough to affect the scar it’s so smooth to write with it’s not like writing on glass you know you can feel it dragging a little bit on the paper so we get this nice little bit of feedback coming through it just the overall experience is just so nice as a combination i love the way that the pen fetches out the color in the ink let me just fetch that over and again to be honest the ink which is not the color of the pen i had no hard starts when using this i had no skipping anything like that at 89 it’s getting towards the top of this price range but i think it’s worth it if it was over dollars i don’t know i might not have bought it but 89 it actually does seem just right and i do have a couple of these now which means though it has to go in position number one i’m just going to clear this off when i come back we’ll take a final look at each of the pens so here we go these are the pens in the order of ranking at position number six we’ve got the free mantle handmade pen number five pen bbs 456 number four twist b diamond 580 number three pen bbs 487 position two moon man m800 this month’s winner position number one the narwhal scroll kill i hope you’ve enjoyed today’s video what ranking would you have given these pens what pens have you been using during august what ranking would you
