that should be leading the news tonight here and in any country that values its freedoms next month it's 20 years since the september 11 attacks that's 20 years since nearly 3 000 new yorkers and australians and others were murdered in cold blood by islamist terrorists 20 years on return of afghanistan to taliban rule it's all a real and present danger once again the fall of kabul in the past 24 hours is a catastrophe it's truly diabolical for the people of afghanistan it's a devastating blow for the families and mates the australian soldiers killed there and it's yet another sign of weakness of the west and the unreliability of america now i can understand what the american people are tired of these forever wars and i get that australians little appetite for sending our soldiers to far away countries especially those that seem incapable of being repaired but why did the afghan army have to be stripped of its air support why couldn't there have been a ready reaction force left at bagram to help whenever things got too rough this should not have been too much for even a war weary american should not have been too much either for allies like australia almost certainly there will now be a humanitarian disaster in afghanistan on a colossal scale almost certainly there will be now an upsurge of terrorism against soft targets all over the western world and almost certainly russia will be emboldened in its aggression against ukraine and china emboldened in its ambitions to crush democratic taiwan already both russia and china seem keen to deal with the taliban and recognise their rule whenever you're frustrated at being locked up i get it that's how i feel too it's very thought for the women and girls of afghanistan what will happen to many of them that's happening even now tonight straight away will be horrific and foreseeable this whole sorry mess itself was foreseeable given the cocked up withdrawal of the biden administration as people said the instant it was announced who gives a terrorist enemy your departure date right across the american political and military establishment there's and recriminations from those who warned about a cut and run strategy from a president quite frankly i regard as all but senile here he was just over a month ago is the taliban takeover of afghanistan now inevitable no it is not why because you have the afghan troops have 300 000 well-equipped as well as quipped as any army in the world and an air force against something like 75 000 taliban it is not inevitable mr president thank you very much your own intelligence community has assessed that the afghan government will likely collapse that's not true and this too take a look at this picture from the weekend of us diplomats being evacuated in a chopper from the u.s embassy in kabul it's an eerie parallel to the 1975 fall of saigon with u.s diplomats then too forced to take to the air as they fled the american embassy in vietnam it's a humiliating replay of history only again a few weeks ago he was president biden on this very point do you see any parallels between this withdrawal and what happened in vietnam with some people feeling whatsoever zero what you had is you had entire brigades breaking through the gates of our embassy six if i'm not mistaken the taliban is not the south of the north vietnamese army they're not they're not remotely comparable in terms of capability there's going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of a embassy in the of the united states from afghanistan it is not at all comfortable mind you at least the barbarism now settling once again over afghanistan should put a few things into better perspective last week while the taliban were taking city after city and the executions had started the un didn't raise its voice about afghanistan it declared code red over climate change where was the u.n when the women and girls of afghanistan needed them how is the lecturing of a young greta tunberg more worthy than the pleas for their lives of afghan women now i've seen these girls and women i've met with them in afghanistan when i was there with a former prime minister the word barbaric seems utterly inadequate to describe their fate who is ever going to put their trust in the west again the taliban 20 years on is back stronger and more determined than ever far better trained ever before now able to access all the military hardware that the afghan army has abandoned one of the taliban's self-described leaders who's fronted the media over the past few hours boasted that he had served six years at guantanamo bay before the u.s let him go we're all the activists now that urged president obama down this path backed in by president trump too and left to a broken biden to implement forget the human rights of the gitmo terrorists is now 40 million lives thrown on the scrap heap in a country that's historically be the graveyard of empires oh we in the west have got to get real at virus we've been scaring ourselves withless about over the last 18 months climate change if the models are right if there are no countervailing natural factors might raise the temperature of the world by a couple of degrees the offence taken by the ultra woke at everything could all turn out to be the least of our worries it's a very dangerous world all right but there are some dangers we need to take more in our stride and other dangers so final to all that we hold dear that we need to be much better armed against tonight we should grieve the people of afghanistan and also stiffen our spines lest them all go against us we've got to start strengthening our economy not shutting it down not driving up the debt building up our energy power not obliterating it for bloody windmills and we should start strengthening our military not turning it in to a humanitarian agency mark my words there's a lot of trouble ahead for countries like australia to those inclined to say oh it'll be okay we've got through this before let me say the west was a much more united bloc back then and the people of the west far more confident in themselves and their values democracy equality and freedom these are the values we used to defend right around the world yet today many of us can't even defend them in our own country<br><!--
