Query & Schultz S1:E49 8-24-21 – Carson Wentz returns to practice for Colts

greetings and salutations this is the incredibly creatively and appropriately named now charitably award-winning aquarian schultz program on isc sports network i’m jquery that’s the very stoic derek hello it is show ron guidry derek good yes that was the one that i chose as well 49 is a number with a lot of like journeyman pictures i i noticed this did you think of anybody else because there was one other person that i thought of that wasn’t to the level of guidry there was one but we’ve already used him lee smith yeah yeah he did we must have i think he must have worn like seven you were a couple of different ones um tom candiotti was number 49. yeah let me tell you a tom candiati story tom candiority was a knuckleball pitcher yep my very first job in media for the most part i was a writer for the indianapolis recorder the small oldest newspaper in indianapolis african american owned yeah sure and tony gwynn was playing for the padres of course i mean tony gwynn only played for the padres and he was living in fishers in the offseason i think that’s well known now and a buddy of mine said you want to go to san diego and just visit my buddy’s cousin my buddy jeff hester and i said sure you know while i’m there i should try to get a press pass and do a story on tony gwynn so i went out i was as green as green gets and it’s before the game it’s like an hour before the dodgers padres game tight race and the inner west and i go i have the press pass so i’m like wayne’s world like prospects go wherever i want yeah so i mean i didn’t know the rules i was very green and naive i was in my mid-20s and so i walked right back to the clubhouse and tony was getting stretched on a trainer’s table and i walked right up to him hey tony can i interview you and like the trainer looks at me like who what are you doing i mean there’s a protocol there’s a time and i’m sure and tony gwynn’s like where are you from and i said indianapolis okay so anyway we sat down and he said you know what normally i would have had no chance you would have no chance that i would engage you in conversation because i would have been watching film over and over and over the picture we’re about to face and he said but tonight we’re facing tom candiati and he’s a knuckleball pitcher so there’s nothing i can do to prepare for it so wow my film time goes out the window because this time can be out yeah so there you go yeah that’s a good way for you to kind of shoehorn in a name drop of course i interviewed tony gwynn and here’s how derek he happened to face tom candiotti one night i’m the eddie white of podcast you know what’s interesting too another guy that was a knuckleballer wore 49 that played for 100 years tim wakefield was number 49. really played for 20 years 200-something wins i think for tim wakes knuckleballers i mean you would think the two things that i’ve always felt like with your kids if you want your kid to have a unique like a long sports career you know so many people are worried about i want to make sure that my kid can throw this fast or can run this fast or can do it teach him the long snap yeah punt or throw a knuckleball yep right and you stick stick around forever those guys a lot of those guys do yeah how about a friend rob overton matt overton just got another job with lh yeah the problem with good for matt overton the problem with knuckleballers is that um if you get into one you make them look really stupid oh yeah like the most famous pitch of tim wakefield’s career probably is the walk-off he gave up to aaron boone because he aaron boone hit that to jupiter sent the yankees to the world series but wakefield was a really good pitcher for a long time i knuckleballs just move all over the place right yeah is it like just kind of float well then what’s there’s a lot of movement but they just kind of float like they’re just it’s all it looks like soft toss when you’re watching it on tv you’re like this pitch is going 65 miles an hour or whatever no uh your wiffle ball career did you throw knuckles i wasn’t a thrower i was um i was kind of like tony i mean i i just concentrated on hitting that’s that’s what i was tony gwynn okay tg that i was watching a lot of film of the other pictures no we didn’t have those capabilities um back you know 20 almost 25 years ago i found a tape i think from your backyard wrestling career i saw that tweet that you had we safety was our number one priority in the by dub so we did not jump on any microwaves or anything like that but greg sanford andre did dislocate his shoulder and that was the end of backyard wrestling greg samfon andre who’s that uh one of the well his his name was rage but greg sanford andre was uh his his birth name in your little wrestling league the backyard wrestling byw he was rage uh listen we have a lot to get to and talk about here in terms of this week thank you so much by the way for those of you who are either listening on the podcast forum or tuned in this is query and schultz and we talk each and every week about sports throughout central indiana courtesy of those who make it possible that we’ll talk about over the course of the show today chateau kitchens is one of them right there right bailly and wood financial the shop love heating and cooling wgu indiana among others derek let’s begin with this colts practice back underway they come off the game in minnesota but the big news is carson wentz now is not only out on the practice field he’s going through seven on seven drills this accelerates people thinking that’s it ready to go week one let’s go i think you have to pump the brakes there a little bit yeah there’s a difference between going through seven on seven drills and taking live contact but it beats the alternative you can’t not say that this is a positive it clearly is a positive to have carson wentz back he’s not only participating in 707 drills this morning up in westfield i say this morning because we’re taping this on late monday morning it’s almost lunch time now um but he’s taking every rep in seven on seven so that obviously is is a encouraging so i agree with you i agree with you that i think week one is still but now originally we were thinking okay best case scenario with this is that he only misses a week or two and certainly that appears to be on target right cause if he just misses a week or two we’re only a month out and even if the colts take it really easy i think four weeks is a real reasonable timetable from here but here’s the thing i i think that there is a danger danger is maybe the wrong word but there is an understanding or just a natural tendency when you see that he is getting multiple reps in practice and man look he’s just he’s going look he hasn’t been out there in what three weeks yeah almost to the day so you’ve got i mean this is basically totally cramming for the test right before the final yeah so let’s not all of a sudden pretend that this means like hey this is what i read into this no they’re trying to to get everything stretched out into this smaller window but we were worried and i’ll i’ll be fully upfront about this i was extremely pessimistic when that first timetable came out i was like okay well i’m expecting this to be 10 to 12 weeks because that’s how it always works it doesn’t appear to be that way the good news about this specific injury i’m not a doctor i don’t pretend to be they removed a bone so there is no chance for re-injury this isn’t one of those like ligament tears or something like that where it’s still sore and you got to kind of take it easy i mean yes they they have to just kind of gradually bring him wrong i’m not saying that they’re going to throw him out there in 11 on 11 and you know start hitting him or anything like that anything crazy like that but at the very least with this foot injury you can be maybe a little bit more aggressive than you could with a different sort of how many surgeries have you had in your life uh i don’t think i’ve had any outside of having do having teeth removed count what teeth i have one or two i had one or two teeth pulled um one or two you don’t remember no no i don’t remember one of the experiences i woke up to ring it and was like ow you woke up what well they had me on what was it like nitrous or something like that yeah and the only time i ever felt that before was i was at a phil lesch and friends show like 20 years ago and that was there was that kind of feeling but anyway um i woke up during the tooth pulled at phil lash and friends no um anyway i was having my tooth pulled uh this was not at a concert and uh and i woke up during it and i was kind of like out of it like floating and then i started feeling intense pain and i saw somebody reach over and toggle something and then i i don’t remember the rest of it now which story was that that’s the phil let’s story no i i shouldn’t have mentioned the philosophy the only time that i ever had that feeling before was at a phil lesch and friend’s show and then did you see did anybody toggle no no one toggled anything i was just kind of going with the jams with the music yeah that that alone would be tooth pulling and excruciating i’m supposed to have mine out uh first in november yeah all four wisdom teeth yes i i have mine too and they keep telling me you got to get them out you got to get them out well it’s going to suck here’s what will happen to you i never got forever i was like well why why do i need i’ve had them for 20 years now why get them taken out well one of them now is the decay is bad enough that i’m getting it’s starting to happen with mine too um so you have to take a picture of your face afterwards because you look like a chipmunk i guess it just no swelling no face pictures i’m already very conscientious look at this let’s do fat face no derek my face is getting fat no it’s not it is it’s the beta blockers um what all do we have to get to today we’re going to be really really cold savvy because unlike last week there really wasn’t a lot of stuff that happened this week we’ll recap the indycar weekend in st louis that you were just at that you just got home from at what two in the morning or whatever at gateway made it three hours and 22 minutes we’ll talk a little bit about that um also uh this week is important an important milestone for me personally and people love when we discuss those things on the show stuff about me i’m trying to think about milestone well there is a there was an anniversary yesterday and really throughout this week that um oh now we’re reaching um we’ve got to be getting close to an anniversary of this show on isc right uh yeah we’re nearing the one year we’re about two or three weeks away from that but that’s not what i’m speaking of this is specific to me individually okay okay well i’ll let you yeah i’ll fester on that okay good and we have some pictures or do we have the picture or no no we don’t okay we don’t actually have the picture of me from this milestone from years ago i don’t know if i wanted to share it i shared it on instagram and twitter you have an instagram account oh yeah yeah it’s mostly pictures of my kid but yep i didn’t know you had an instagram account you’re not on it so how would you know well i mean people forward me stuff about you everyone and thousands of people know that i’m on there i’ve never okay sure i’ve never heard you mention so we’ll talk colts and uh we’ll talk milestones and there’s a runaway horse down in evansville i know wanted to touch on that well she what’s matter she’s fine i felt sorry for her you said i know like she got hit by a semi or something she’s fine it’s possible she’s holding together an art project now i don’t know you know we’ll get into that as well uh when we come back yes carson wentz is back in the fold for the colts but what other areas for the colts are there that you look at and either feel better about where you started in camp or are still big question marks for indianapolis that discussion and more when we come back to aquarium schultz [Music] it’s here the moment that will define you so think of this moment as your moment the one you’ve been waiting for you were built for it and so were we wgu the online university where got it and he will not be touched jackson hello there we go stokes throws it cut ball ricochets a huge hit wow this has been an amazing display of goal scoring welcome back to aquarian schultz on this lovely late summer morning afternoon night i don’t know when you’re watching this um i know some people watch this while they’re in bed so just to like kind of relax at the end of the day and they’re relaxing and they just kind of flip it on and then they watch it and then it like in the morning or at night both both yeah both like pre-pre-morning meditation relaxation relaxation and then um and then at night have you seen my shooting form it’s pretty good your shots kind of broke but the form is right so it’s weird like i can’t quite figure it out like you’ve got pieces of the equation yeah see that are good the ceiling here is too low but but something that i learned when i moved to indiana is that everyone shoots purely like i just remember playing wreck basketball and i have this your shot is broke i have this real well my my jump shot’s actually real wet it just the form itself isn’t isn’t great but it’s it’s soaking wet your jump shot is as wet as the mojave i’ve noticed that coming from the east coast we had kids that shot all kinds you know like from the side and two hands like i do show me how you do it and everyone in indiana shoots perfectly like the form is amazing let me see yours i shoot with two hands so i shoot like that so i spin both off but but it allows me unlimited straight i have in the gym range i was steph before steph now i’m not as accurate but i have i have in the gym range i can shoot basically standing from anywhere in the gym range yep you’ve seen it you’ve seen me i’ve embarrassed you at mackie when we used to do the show there sure because your shot looks great your shot is a lot like you on the surface you’re like oh yeah i can see why this guy’s successful and then when you kind of get into the content of it then you’re like wait what why why is he popular you know like your jump shot’s the same thing where it looks good but it’s like clang clan clang clang you’re like it never actually goes in okay no response to that this portion of the show brought to you by friends of alien wood financial group i you know when you shoot it derek you need the ball to just go straight up and back down can we just the sign of a good race and i appreciate jake morris doing this every time he’s kind of like our our dwight schrute arranging everything i mean that in a complimentary way arranging everything in a pleasing way i just wish that we would kind of limit the actual like physical objects balls frisbees type things on our set because they distract you and they distract from the show we were doing the uh and thank you to the american dairy association of indiana for having us out at the dairy bar serving up milkshakes and we raised 275 for the great american milk drive um they gave us little frisbees to throw to the kids and stuff yeah and i hit a guy you’re hitting you not only hit a guy you hit someone who was in a wheelchair well i’m not laughing at that he he was super nice about it but it just it went longer well you’re lucky that he was a nice guy because i went out and talked to me he’s very nice yeah but i was mortified because you’re just sending the frisbee look derek i threw it to a kid and not very good ups not not great effort i was like throwing to you you know i threw a normal throw but then i’m like oh i forgot i’m throwing to somebody that’s like you know 4-6 because he was like eight and he had no ups yeah so it went over him and the poor guy was eating his milkshake and it hit him in the back of the head we can’t have anything that’s less than ideal we can’t have anything around you that you can throw but then i went out to apologize to him and i was like oh my goodness i’m so sorry like i did he was cool about it he was hearing impaired and i had a mask on but he had his friend with him that was helpful and he was totally cool and i offered him a free shake nah don’t worry about it great guys nice guy bailingwood financial group is sure of this segment what’s going on here on the right well no it’s it’s a little bright don’t you’re not supposed to speak about what’s happening in the background see everyone’s on us no one has any idea that we’re adjusting some tinting and everything else it’s just yeah see it’s just bright so our tech whiz jordan took down the contrast or whatever on the screen right at bailey and wood to make it look everything’s bright and shiny at bailey and wood except for by the way uh the interest rate numbers which are still low and not necessarily limiting that’s why bailey and wood if you’re looking for a new home that’s the now’s the time right and you got to get pre-approved you have to i think the secret’s out about that if you don’t know that already then you’re kind of screwed if you’re looking for a new home but eight five five three five zero home bawfg.com five-star customer service in 13 indiana branch locations for bailey and wood financial group all over the state can you give the contact information again please without the shot of espresso what do you mean i drank coffee on the way in but i didn’t think it was too fast the phone number is eight five five okay three five zero okay h o m e home eight five five b w f g d f g dot com yeah bailey and wood and by the way i don’t think that i motored through that when you call bailey and wood or when you email bailly and wood bawfg fg.com be sure to say to them i got in touch with you because the guy with the better voice of the two reminded me slowly how to get in touch with you with your contact information because one thing we do know about bailly and wood aside from being a locally owned fantastic and for that matter civically involved mortgage company they also have an employee who said i have a great voice yeah well we do have to take things slow with jake because i don’t know if you guys know this but his heart you know it’s a problem we have to go to leisurely pace now in beta blockers bawfg.com eight five five three five zero what area is of concern to you we’ll take carson once at quarterback aside okay i mean we can sit there and go round and round and round but still positive like i wanna you know you wanna start like two well two or three weeks ago we were very and i was the cheerleader on this very negative because it just felt like all this colts injury news was coming in now now it looks like you know quinn nelson back in practice two we didn’t mention that and ryan kelly right so you’ve got three starting to come into form yeah really big cogs in the wheel that are well they need progress because you’ve got to make sure that everybody’s on the same page before week one but uh if we’re starting with positives look an area where the colts have been deficient for so long and it’s been a question mark and a nagging thing for so long it does look derrick like they are going to have not one but a couple of guys that can provide them some pass rush god i hope so i really hope so because quitty pay um is having a pretty good camp he is and seems to be um a guy that that is gonna have a bright future for them the the two that really that banks on for me are komoko toure and ben banagu at least with toure we have a sample size where we know okay this guy can play right it’s just about him being healthy whereas banagoo we just don’t know the good news for banagoo is that he was all over the field against minnesota albeit against twos threes and probably guys that aren’t gonna make the team but still rather look good than look bad um but he was a healthy scratch even into year three in a lot of cases and the colts have remained high on him behind closed doors they’ve been singing his praises but he has to get out on the field in a game that actually counts and show it so maybe this is finally been banagou’s time to do that you know chicken in the egg when it comes to defensive secondary because it you know the cults have some nice pieces in the secondary i have always always felt like in the nfl and in any football team the defensive backs the line i always use defensive backs and offensive line those are sunglasses and cell phone chargers you can never have too many one of them breaks before you you would oh my goodness i stepped on it wrong you lose you lose one of them it just goes wayward you don’t know what happened those are the two areas where you have to have that the beauty of it is derek if you have in your you have some flexibility to work with in your defensive backfield or you can account for injuries and having to plug in undrafted free agents halfway through the year or whatever it may be because those situations do arise if you have consistent pass rush because if if a if the opposing quarterback i mean it’s obvious right if the opposing quarterback is having to rush what he is doing you don’t need your secondary to be solid for very long per snap they work hand in hand with one another so that to me is also the good news in an area where the colts have had to plug and play a lot of different guys over the years if they can finally get a pass rush then you have more flexibility for those guys that you’re bringing in yeah and they’ve done pretty well of just kind of finding guys remember uh rashad melvin oh yeah who who played pretty well pierre desire who they basically got off the street played pretty well for them tj carrey is another guy who you know we didn’t even know if he was going to make the team and then suddenly he’s he’s been a nice fill in and now he’s going to have a shot to get that third corner roll i think what what that really relies on is rocky scene stepping up and being a good player for them and maybe some of the pressure is off now that with with xavier rhodes back and kenny moore those those are clearly your top two guys maybe it’ll be a little bit easier for kenny moore by the way rocky’s seen here shirt at the shop yeah 918 broadway avenue clay terrace or the shop indy.com is where you can my favorite my favorite defensive player naiji heinz i think is my favorite offensive player kenny moore is my favorite defensive both of them very cool guys i feel like i can play favorites now that we’re not in it every day anymore in it every day well it’s important to me integrity is my number one most important thing that’s fair um um offensive line to me is still a question mark always will be i guess for any nfl team it’s hard to get even if you have a really good core on your offensive line you know you’re going to need depth and the left side there are still question marks yep and again just cohesiveness you don’t know because so even though you know ryan kelly and quentin nelson you know they can work well together smith you need time you need time to continue to get that cohesiveness yeah i think the problem is is that you have um a lot of the lead officers like the i i don’t know all the titles like let’s say it’s a boat i don’t know all the titles but um for what right guard and right tackle and all that would be but you don’t have the captain because the left tackle is the most important position right so you have the cohesion already with the existing four with glow and with braden smith and q and and uh and rk um but you need to have that with uh left tackle as well it’s glowing right sorry i’m just trying to talk shop like everybody else yeah just like everybody else they don’t have a starting we talked about this last week they don’t have a starting left tackle right now that is healthy uh because eric fisher is a obviously a starting caliber left tackle but julian davenport even though apparently he’s starting to show some signs of maybe locking down that number two spot um has been a little bit better uh he’s a backup level player sam tevye is a backup level player um holden is a backup level player so they they need fischer to come back as soon as possible and it looks like he’s definitely not going to be backed by week one correct i mean and that’s which isn’t surprising achilles is a big big i mean that’s a big position yeah now i’ll disagree in one area from a scheme standpoint and a the guy that you need to be the most consistently reliable on an offensive line standpoint you’re right i mean it would be obviously left tackle especially unless you have a left-handed quarterback i guess but um but the commander or the captain of an offensive line is the center yeah because he’s commanding where everybody yeah i don’t i disagree and we’ve seen obviously for many years they had jeff saturday do you think saturday when you’d see him pointing all the time do you think he was really pointing stuff out or was there some theater there i think there was some theater and some dummy stuff with peyton but i think saturday’s was all real um the colts have been blessed to have those guys and we’ve seen in seasons when they haven’t had kelly or saturday how poorly it’s gone so it is important to have that then again you know i feel bad even throwing i’m trying to think like samson citely i think would have been a center for them for a while um did they try hugh thornton there at all he came in as a guard i think they did did he try to snap i don’t know they they had so many guys that came in got hurt and then they and they went away from him for a few weeks and then they went back to him yeah he wasn’t a bad player he was just too small yeah i’m trying to remember some of the other guys the interior of their line between saturday’s departure and the drafting of ryan kelly was awful it was and it was really bad they had some really bad guards and some bad centers that have been mixed in there um so i don’t want to make it all about the center but you’re right you need to have a good deal is michael strong who has looked very good um at receiver and he’s a big body and he’s kind of been a a real blossom bloom here in camp is he deron carter drew haddad or is he dontrell in men you know name name or receiver that you know you didn’t think much of and then midway through the year you’re like man this guy can play yeah uh hopefully it’s the latter um what’s interesting about him is that he he fits the mold of the guy that everybody just slept on you know like small school guy right has all this athletic ability but nobody knows because a he’s small school and b there’s questions about the competition that he’s facing so it’s easy to look that way when you’re so much better than everybody else i mean hell and this is a extreme extreme example but i’m old enough to remember 25 years ago when people were like well randy moss a he you know he had some off-field red flags but a lot of people would say marshall like what like anybody can do this against this but is the guy that should be at florida state but randy moss people knew originally was notre dame than florida state and it was but there’s a reason why people i’m not saying that people didn’t know obviously everyone knew randy moss but there’s a reason randy moss fell to 21 it wasn’t just off-field stuff i think some people questioned the level of competition when i worked at channel 6 ball state was playing marshall and we used to always send out a photographer i’ve told this story before but we’d send out a photographer to hey you know ball state’s playing can you go and get a couple highlights come back and we’ll run 45 seconds on the air of ball state um and joe rhoda cap was the photographer went to go shoot the ball state marshall game and it’s a saturday and of course we’re doing a six o’clock sports and it’s like 5 15 and where is rhoda cap i mean that game is a one o’clock start where finally he walks in at like 5 30 which i mean plenty of time to cut the tape but and sets the tape down and then sets down a second tape and i’m like you shot two tapes of ball state marshall and he looks at me and says that was the single greatest college football performance i’ve ever seen what are you talking about he goes just put the tapes in and i mean every play like i put it in moss had like five touchdowns at 200 and some odd yards i mean it was ridiculous it’s not even fair i mean what he was able to do and there’s a reason why you know you say you got mossed now i mean it’s become like a a catchphrase you know what’s funny about randy moss is i don’t know of many players edran james comes to mind that we’re more misunderstood by those outside of like that market i mean i think the perception was is that randy moss was this head case egocentric difficult to deal with and i mean now that his playing career is over with as an analyst on television he comes off like a really cool guy and a team player and i mean i think you have to kind of uh understand and we weren’t doing this 20 to 25 years ago um where people came from correct you know like steven jackson it’s easy to pop in a tape and see oh my god he’s jumping up in the stands and fighting people well if you knew stephen jackson’s background in port arthur and what he rolled with and what he saw at a very young age you might react differently to whatever your upbringing was and i think that’s what happened with moss and because he grew up right there in huntington right where where marshall is he did he played and that’s not played high school basketball jason i’ve been to huntington that it’s not a great area um jeff george told me randy moss is one of the best teammates he ever had yeah said he was great and he had him as a young guy he said he was great i do think that and i think even moss would admit this he completely checked out those years in oakland and that was right during the middle of his career and i do think that that hurt him from a narrative standpoint as far as his career was concerned but did he play in buffalo at the end he played with uh there was one other team that he went to i don’t think it was buffalo what’s interesting is go to the niners real quick i was in nissan stadium with nick yeoman for the indycar race in nashville and we’re sitting there in the balls of nissan stadium and i said to nick yeoman all right who is the greatest player to have played home games in this stadium and i’m thinking about matthews and mcnair and eddie george and nix’s uh randy moss yeah oh yeah it’s funny how that works uh he did play for the niners were his last team in 2012. how many did he play four total um vikings yep raiders yep patriots yep and the other two that we named titans yes jerry rice is a little bit tougher to do okay rice you ready yep niners yep broncos yep seahawks yep raiders yeah is that it i think that’s it i thought you might have gone to camp rice went to camp with somebody in the at the very end there and then oh it was the broncos he never actually appeared in the game in a game for the broncos apparently okay so he went to camp with them sorry i didn’t mean to sidetrail this much on fun game randy moss and all of that but no i mean i’m just to kind of tie a bow on it i’m encouraged by where the cults are at health-wise um i’m still not skeptical per se but show me when it comes to carson wentz and some of these other things well the colt’s going to have this fantastic well look it’s going to depend on if if terrain and banagoon and pay uh can generate prices carson wentz may be his health may be exactly where he needed to be then you got to figure out whether or not he can still play yeah i mean quite frankly that’s only you’re right his health is only we don’t know that because we haven’t seen him in camp enough it’s only part of the question um we have other things to get to including features right we do yep we’re going to get to our uh love heating and cooling love that play okay the shops biter bull bleep imcu who just came aboard with us a couple of weeks ago we’ve got a kind of a player of the week feature so we’ll talk about that from the wgu indiana sponsors this segment we’ll get to our sage move of the week in just a second but if you’re looking to advance yourself in your career and get a degree on your own time head to wgu.edu indiana you know it’s just like when a restroom break happens on a live show oh god you’re going to compare it to this life sometimes just things pop up and get in the way and if that’s the case for you when it comes to your education wgu as derek had mentioned you can work on your own schedule wgu.edu indiana whether you want to complete a degree that’s still sitting on the table when life got in the way for you or you’re just starting out and you think you know what i want to work it around my schedule that’s the entire purpose of indiana’s largest online accredited university sage of course is the mascot the sage move of the week we each nominate somebody on this for me derek i’m going to go with this it was not a popular move in chicago and i know that this isn’t necessarily a bear’s show but the decision by matt nagy and the bears to stick with through the preseason and have andy dalton out on the field when you have a promising and what looks to be electric young quarterback in justin fields ready to go having the presence of mind and the patience even though i think we all know that transition is going to come when you have a young quarterback i’ve seen we both we’ve seen too many quarterbacks that get thrown out too early everybody gets excited and then the roof collapses and caves in on them and it just ruins them forever and i think the bears know they might actually have a franchise quarterback for the first time in a long time so the patience in not giving in to the fan demands right now and going ahead and sticking with dalton to me is a sage move i completely disagree with that but um you are allowed to have your sage move of the week mine is actually bears related too okay isn’t that interesting let me let me do mine here um mitchell trubisky going back to chicago and kind of dunking on the bears i know it was a preseason game but that must have felt good right sage move of the week for him uh trubisky ended up with 220 through the air uh through a tut as well um a guy that the bears gave up on and and probably rightfully so you know for the people that say well you he led him to the playoffs twice he was the starting quarterback on two playoffs he was one that i just never derek the whole i never got it either you know he started 12 games you called it early kind of like josh allen you were like i remember when trubisky was rising up draft boards and you’re like i’ve seen this guy and he’s barely played and and now we’re just going off i mean we were going off what 11 games really one where i was wrong in that because another one that was kind of the blueprint from the for those that are that don’t recall it mitchell trubisky when he was at north carolina started for one year he started like 12 games and it was you know oh he was the he was a combined wonder right oh his mechanics and his rotation is perfect and he has all the intangibles and yeah but can he play against a collapsing defense you know i mean we don’t know the other guy that fell into that category of very limited number of games started in college but all the intangibles were there was ryan tannehill yeah and it really kind of took tannehill to change the scenery you know he’s a good quarterback it took him a long time but yeah it did click for him but he but he is a solid quarterback trubisky will be that’s the perfect role for him right if he can go somewhere where they’re a contending team and they need him to go in let’s say three weeks and keep them afloat good role for him yeah i agree and and then you can kind of plot your next career move because obviously he’s going to want to start again and somebody likely will give him a start a chance to start again but he has to handle himself properly here behind alan and do a good job but i was never a big mitch fan but i look at something like that and um and smile because it must feel really really good to go and do that when somebody doesn’t believe because i’ve had people like that as shocking as it is that haven’t believed in me and sort of come back and dunk right on their head feels good tell me somebody that didn’t believe i don’t need to air that dirty if you’re watching you know who you are so how you like me now i’m on i’m on tv you think katie kaleski no i’m not talking about um my personal life i mean professionally but there are people that doubted me in my personal life too so yeah how you like me now i’m on tv look at this you know i can’t imagine that people would have doubted you when they saw what you looked like 20 years ago this weekend because you just showed me in the break what the reunion or the anniversary as you were talking we’ll get to that how about coming up a little bit um the reason why i disagree on on the fields thing is that there are examples to your point i think derek carr is the gold example of not derek david david carr i always do that david carr is the number one golden rule example of this where he got thrown to the wolves he was sacked 10 billion times in his first couple of seasons and it just it just crushed him i mean he never i don’t know if he was ever going to be as good as he was advertised to be as the number one pick but he really never got the chance i felt like um but i’m i’m kind of the firm believer unlike 10 15 years ago everything is far less patient now than it used to be and you have to know kind of like with trubisky you have to know in about a two to three year span if this is your guy or not you just you have to know and any time delaying that just i think puts you further behind the eight ball also it creates a situation you know how the chicago media market is it’s not like here if dalton goes out there and craps his pants then immediately they come for you and that puts uh naggy on a bad spot that puts dalton in a bad spot that puts fields in a bad spot it puts everybody in a bad spot right so that’s kind of what i worry about with that and look if fields can’t handle the adversity let’s say he goes out there and he struggles to your point um if he can’t handle that then he’s probably not your guy anyway right i mean i just so that that’s there’s no doubt that fields is probably going to be starting by week one or two but i just yeah but you know my point is is that if he’s gonna be starting by week three or week four then why even delay it and that’s what happens so often with these teams jake where they start somebody else and then two weeks later they’re going back to the rookie and i’m thinking myself well now you’re just two weeks behind why wouldn’t you have just done this to start i i think with a young quarterback the learning curve in the beginning needs to be done with as little spotlight on it as possible i just think there are examples of this i just think they’re few and far between like people that point to aaron rodgers and brett favre you’re talking about two top ten all-time quarterbacks like two transcendent quarterbacks like it’s just it’s not apples to apples i don’t feel like i think that that is far more of an outlier example than it is uh jordan loves got to be pretty excited about the way things are headed in green bay right well i think you knew if you were him kind of what you were signing up for and and to be honest to collect a paycheck and learn from aaron rodgers even if he’s not doing anything to teach you just to see him every day that’s got to be beneficial who was the guy um i’m forgetting his last name that got a billion dollars because he filled in for like two weeks for green bay matt flynn yes yeah he could sign with seattle and then i don’t think he even won the job in seattle he got beaten camp i think he got released didn’t he eventually um but i think he got beat out in camp is um was it russell wilson beat him out didn’t he wasn’t it around that time that may be right is joshua still in the league and he just got cut again that’s yeah he just got released again maybe i mean that’s a guy sometimes um i’m trying to think of some examples of this christian ponder there have been a couple of guys that just you kind of knew right away this guy can’t play and i guess rosen is one of them there was one other one i was gonna ask um oh do you remember what was the bears who was the kade mcnoun do you remember when they got him and that he was yeah well nobody was all there have been there have been a lot of guys that um have almost failed immediately and and you’ve known i mean i kind of felt like and i really liked him and i i pulled from it notre dame i kind of felt that way about brady quinn where you’re like this isn’t gonna work what about jimmy clausen did you think that way no because i didn’t think i i wasn’t 100 convinced that he was going to be like an nfl starting quarterback um whereas with quinn i was like you know he was quinn was a record-setting quarterback he was small right but he felt like okay if you get to run the right system it might work and it just it never really worked for you remember eric zaire yeah bears right he was i don’t remember but i mean he was more like of my age group but he threw for like you know 8 000 yards and two years in georgia and then remind me would that have been like the tomzak kind of error just after that okay just ask who else would have been their their quarterback bears have had oh i mean they had so many mediocre to bad quarterbacks it’s incredible jim miller would have been in there somewhere they had that one weird team in like 0-1 i think it was 01 that won the division yeah uh and jim miller was their quarter eric cramer would have been like yeah i remember that i mean yeah they did do rotation they had some absolute rotation for sure um love that play next yep let’s do that we’ll continue with our features and continue the show as well it’s corian schultz very smooth transition there thank you i agree [Music] it’s here the moment that will define you so think of this moment as your moment the one you’ve been waiting for you were built for it and so were we wgu the online university where ambition never rests at bay leanwood we pride ourselves on isc indiana sports channel is that what that stands for derek i see nope just isc it doesn’t stand for anything it’s just three letters but it sounds weird to say indiana sports channel sports network because then the sports is right like i said isc is just three letters they just they just chose them at random so we’re in i work full time for isc sports icsup.com um we do events in ohio and michigan and we did one in kentucky so other places so it’s a regional sports network so it’s not an indiana sports channel it’s just it’s just isc it just sounds cool oh it’s in the you know what it is informationally sexy channel uh sexy might be part of it yeah but no that’s not actually i could see why you would make that mistake that’s not what it’s it’s just i see it’s just three letters just kind of thrown together it doesn’t really mean anything okay yeah well uh regardless here on aquarian schultz on isc the random three letters uh it’s time for love that play brought to you by the great guys at love and gals at love heating and air conditioning love dash hvac.com 317 [Music] that’s 317-353-2141 loveheat indy on twitter and i can tell you this derek i grew up with chris and john love they’ve lasted for over 100 years not chris and john they’ve been here that long but the family has four generations of family business because great product quality of the product is number one but also knowledge of the product commitment to customer service that’s what you get with love heating and air and i can tell you by growing up with them yankees fans yeah so they will like your selection for love that play i just think this is and i’m a yankees fan too uh full disclosure i think most people already know that but i just think this is a great story uh andrew velasquez if you’ve never heard that name before he’s been kind of like a journeyman player in the majors he’s bounced around from i think he was with the rays and then he was with the indians and then he was with jordan’s orioles and um and he ended up being picked up by the yankees in december he was released later on in the season but then called up yankees have had a lot of injuries and a lot of covet issues as well but he’s 28 years old and he got called up on august 10th and he had three run scoring hits in a sweep of the red sox jacobs have won nine straight we’re taping this right now as on monday and they’ve surged into the wild card lead you know a season that we kind of left for dead when they were 500 not too long ago and velasquez has been part of that recent surge but he hit his first home run ever first major league homer at yankee stadium in front of his family and he’s from the bronx he went to fordham prep and everything about him is the bronx like you listen to him in the post-game interview he’s like oh it’s such a pleasure for me to be playing for the yankees you know i’ve been dreaming about this since i was a little kid you know he’s got like the accent and all of that um but it’s just it’s just cool it’s cool to see somebody that’s been kind of grinding it out for that long in anonymity and uh be able to do it and for his hometown team i have a fordham prep hat you really well the floor there is named after donnie walsh right correct yeah correct did he go there he did i didn’t know if he coached there because that was originally what he did right now he coached he attended fordham prep yeah um we went derek this is not necessarily love that play play of the week but i’ll tell you what was cool last thursday we went to the white sox a’s game i saw yeah for a businessman special at what is it called now guaranteed rate field yes it was newcomers cellular but they’ve made some renovations that that park’s only you know 30 years old but they made some renovations to it and it’s a nice park it really is um we went and i didn’t know about parking i i literally just thought you know what let’s just go to a game it’s it’s a two-hour and 45-minute drive door-to-door to the stadium let’s just go to a game an afternoon game so i bought tickets for cheap on stubhub and then i bought a parking pass in the the stadium right next to the stadium is where the parking is it’s i mean literally it was a 100 yards from our seats where i parked so i bought a parking pass and we pull in and there’s it’s weird because i parked in the red light i bought for the red lot well they have the three different lots but the signs are not color coded it says red lot but it’s a huge green side oh wow weird wouldn’t it make sense there’s a green there’s a green light yeah so there’s a green sign that says red lot and i’m like well this must be it the fence is open so i pull in and they’ve got the guys parking the cars and i pull up and i said hey who do i need to show my pass here what do i need to do well didn’t you do that to cashier no i just pulled in right there he’s you pulled in right there yeah you can’t come in that way that’s why i did and i said so here’s my pass yeah just park it who cares okay so i parked my car and then put my pass on stubhub resold it walked in went to the game oh come on but i kid you not but during the game i’m 48 years old i’ll be 49 in a week cheated the system i didn’t do that i did par for the course i’m i’m almost 50 years old and i’ve been to probably a thousand major league baseball games we’re sitting in left field and eloy jimenez is the left fielder for the white sox and he’s out there you know stretching and you know whatever he’s kind of interacting with people a little bit when he first came out he definitely did so during a lull in between pitches i just yell out his name and he turns around looks right at us and i give it to like eloy and he does the and i’m telling you what i’m 48 years old derek but there’s something about seeing a big league player that just acknowledges their name being yelled out that was it was like i was eight years old yeah he’s my new all-time favorite player yeah he was probably born when you were covering the cardinals in like 2001. you’re right he’s a young guy yeah um yeah it is it it’ll never stop being cool there’s just something for sure there’s something about mark boyle i think put it best he said these are normal people with just really cool jobs but there’s just something something about that i mean i thought about it i’m like you know if i lived in chicago i would have probably interviewed this guy like twice a week whatever but being a fan in the stands i mean it’s cool you know i’ve never actually been to that park um i’ve been to i’ve been to all the other parks around us you know wrigley and um cincinnati and all the other ones but um not not the white sox i always heard the best way to get in was to take the train so park somewhere else and then take the abbey but i don’t know how the i’ve never been on the l so i don’t know how that you know what i mean obviously well you know there was on our way in there was unfortunately and tragically a chicago police officer who was killed in the line of duty like two weeks ago and her i mean unbeknown to me but as we were driving in on the dan ryan all of a sudden we see this you know flag hanging from cranes and what is going on and her funeral procession was coming the opposite way they had shut down the dan ryan and there were fire trucks on all the overpasses and it was a very tasteful and obviously tradition um or ceremonious you know laden event but on the way in we did not run into any traffic at all and it was like i said two hours and 40 minutes and that was two stops two stop strategy so chicago uh but also st louis you’ve been kind of around the midwest over the past week was in st louis as well yeah wanted to briefly talk about gateway um because i actually kind of like the fact that some of these races are getting a little bit messy indycar’s always been kind of a gentleman sport and it’s it’s been boring for me like i don’t want them to be demolition derby in nascar or anything like that but i like the fact that things get a little bit messy but is there some concern that there has been i know the drivers in the paddock have talked about this maybe some overly aggressive driving particularly this time um i think what you have is like in that particular event at gateway i think they figured out that the aerodynamic packages of these cars it was going to be difficult to pass in traffic so they had to be really aggressive on the restarts and when you mix in the number of what we’re seeing now that we haven’t seen in a long time derrick is a natural blending transition of young talent with veterans and that young talent i think is still kind of figuring out when to go when not to and just the understanding in general of working side by side and things like that and so concern i wouldn’t know that i would say that but you know some of it in nashville was probably they need to widen the track there wasn’t enough room um some of it was new place related at nashville correct correct i think it’s there’s a learning curve pardon the pun for some of the drivers on especially ovals because they’re only doing three of them a year um what’s now going to be interesting to watch is the fact that you have a points championship with you know your points leader as pada award who’s been fabulous but again young driver then you have alex polo there but he’s never been on any of the remaining tracks and then lurking right there third and points joseph newgarden yeah who would be going for his third points championship and then dixon as well i mean realistically you have five i think you can include erickson what is he 60 back with three to go i mean he needs to go on a run but realistically you have five or at least four that are in the mix so that’s i think a good thing and a lot of you know no offense to dixon but nobody wants to see him win his 18th points championship so i think a lot of people feel that way about newgarden i mean there are a lot of people that would like well that too yeah i mean you know would both be cool new garden newgarden to me is still a young gun you forget that he’s been a full-time driver in the series for like eight years now yeah which is weird his 20th win um 20th or 21st i think it was 20th career when at gateway you feel bad for herta because if he would have just stayed clean in some of these other races when he’s running he’d be right there for the championship and now you know forget it herd is really good yeah really good but andretti i mean god ross he’s now had two straight years where he hasn’t even gotten his season off the ground ready auto sport went in that race derek at gateway from having probably two in the top five to within like two laps of each other out herda and rossi both out but these i feel like these last two years that’s been the case for them i mean it’s just been the years from hell hunter ray that you see in the back of that picture i i talked to hunter ray before the race and you know he said look we knew but heading into the year that’s my last year with andretti basically um and i i gotta look at my options but i’m not gonna stick around somewhere unless it’s got a good chance for me to win the 500. gonna be a really interesting silly season free agency sato and hunter i mean you’ve got multiple 500 pagino maybe i think yeah pagino pageant is an interesting one i think pagino if i had to guess right now pagino ends up in jack harvey’s old car harvey ends up in sato’s old car sato becomes a part-time like indy 500 specialist type thing uh hunter ray goes to sports cars and gets an indie one-off somewhere with a competitive team um doesn’t penske kind of want is he pushing pagino the elio path does he want him in sports cars too that’s going to be the the decision for pagino if pagino wants to stay full time in indycar what roger penske does as i understand it derek is if roger penske wants a driver to transition away from indycar but still stay part of that penske family then they get incentives for things like auto dealership stakes and things like that that’s why montoya basically sat out for a couple years and finished out um yes i think pageanto would have the opportunity to run sports cars for roger penske but if he wants to stay in indycar i think he jumps over and he becomes elio’s teammate with meyer shank gotcha and there’s no guarantee that he’s not back at penske although it seems unlikely which is good for meyer shank if you can eliot again absolutely that’s pretty strong i know elliot’s getting up there in age but man what a time that would be are we at the point of the show where i hit you uh no not quick hits yet okay first we got to get to our friends at chateau kitchens okay chateau kitchens i actually just called steven uh moore their owner i didn’t call him i emailed him last week because we have a uh a guest bathroom that needs to be renovated it just needed to be renovated for a long time and just needs to be ripped out and started over and so he and his team kitchens nope chateau kitchens is how you pronounce it um his team’s going to come over in early september take a look and we’ll get things probably rocking and rolling because i wouldn’t think of using anybody else but chateau kitchens after the job that they did on my kitchen fantastic chateau kitchens.com follow them on instagram or on facebook just at chateau kitchens the spelling is right there you don’t have to do jake’s wonky pronunciation or anything like that you guys are smart you’re not stupid so i know that you’ll figure it out you can see some of their before and after pictures did you like fuzzy bear and they do an amazing job yeah but it would be actually the sweetest chef that would spend the most time in chateau kitchens right i guess so yeah [Music] you’re much bigger your age group is starting to really kind of age out of like what’s cool and pop culture and all of that like that’s quite true a lot of people in their 20s right now they’re like what they know the swedish chef is that a muppets reference yeah they’re not the swedish chef nobody knows like even steven’s probably like i don’t want to be associated with these guys if they’re on top muppets okay it’s a little weird chateau kitchen wonky beautiful cabinetry as well they’re one of the top uh manufacturers in the midwest when it comes to that but the premier home remodeler anything interior basements bedrooms bathrooms kitchens whatever it is pictures on the website right yeah and on instagram and facebook at chateau kitchens uh we’ll come back quick hits uh milestone for me and a couple of more features as we wrap up it’s corian schultz [Music] it’s here the moment that will define you so think of this moment as your moment the one you’ve been waiting for you were built for it and so were we wgu the online university where ambition never rests at bayleenwood we pride ourselves on our five-star customer service but at our core we’re a family family owned and family to our customers staff and our community from charity events to recognizing hometown heroes we prioritize giving back to our communities that have always supported our growth so let us help you get your dream home today [Music] [Music] made the highlight reel again and he will not be touched jackson hello there we go stokes knows it caught fall ricochets a huge hit wow this has been an amazing display of goal scoring so late august is a a special time for me there are a lot of moments and milestones that happened in the month of august we talked about one last week the 10-year anniversary of the show that was august 15th um when i first started an internship which turned into kind of my first full-time job at the old espn 950 that happened in august august 21st of 2005. i remember dates pretty well um but one that is attached to a round number 20 years ago this week in fact it was yesterday sunday uh parents dropped me off at iu i’d never been there and said all right see ya you had never been on campus no we had east we had there were so many east coast kids and i know this isn’t a surprise to anybody that’s gone to iu but even 20 years ago there were so many kids from the tri-state so new york new jersey connecticut um that they did a special east coast orientation at the hilton in midtown manhattan really so i went there with all these other kids from long island and wherever else and i took a spanish test i took a math test and then they they did the projector and and all of that and gave me an orientation i think it was two days i think i had we had to drive in twice um to to do it uh but i had never stepped on campus before i’d been to indiana obviously because my parents were from south bend but only the northern part of the city so were you terrified i i i don’t even know i think i was kind of too dumb to realize what i was doing like i always kind of thought to myself okay well i’ll do this for four years and then i’ll come back and all my friendships will remain the same and all that and of course you know it’s a life-changing thing to move away where you don’t know everybody right but i was so geeked to get away from my parents um and and be on my own which is weird now in hindsight it you know you talk about how dumb you were when you were 18 to like hate on my parents and they paid for my tuition and my parents were awesome like you and i are very are very different in a lot of ways we’re very similar with our upbringings like i had a very norman rockwell painting type childhood where everyone loved each other and we all did stuff together like we had you’re right you know my i was vice president of the youth group and my mom staying at church choir like we had a a very nice life but at 18 i was like i want to get drunk in the woods and hang out with my friends and you know meet girls and whatever else and um how did the meeting girls part go it actually went this isn’t really a surprise it went really well um went really really well when i got there well i saw you were you said it you posted a picture yeah you showed me uh your pants that you were wearing are like well but you were like a 26 waist yep and then you’re like a 26 length here yeah they were long uh if i remember right i wore i think they were 34 34 pants which how did you do which sounds like an average pant size right but like me as an adult i wear 30 30. so well you’re like uh the espn documentary pant size yeah how do you not trip over the bottom i did they’d get ripped up on the bottom all the time and then i’d have to get new pants but these are from american eagle as is the shirt because my job in high school was i was the stock room manager at the trouble mall american eagle and you look fairly in shape okay so i have i have yeah i was you guys defined you got fat after that right i got fat and then um anne dumped me and then i got real skinny again and yeah and then i got fat again because we started drinking more so i had kind of like a back and forth kind of wave thing but that’s me and my mom august whatever 23rd 2001 at the sample gates and literally right there she kisses me on the forehead my dad gave me a hug and they were off and i walked from there back to right quad we had we had moved all my stuff in the day before so this was that they got you brand new shoes for school yeah i got the superstars so that was the one thing i got right fashion wise because everything else on there is kind of a disaster but the best thing about the cargo pants was that you can’t really see it but discman in the right and menthol cigarettes in the left so those were great characters you see jordan zooming in a little bit did you have the methyls did you have the menthols up like right here with your mom i don’t think i ever did with my mom because my mom only found i think my parents deep down new but my mom was very non-confrontational about stuff like that so she found an empty pack of cigarettes once and she put it on my bed pillow with a post-it note that had a sad face on it and that was crushing so i i was like i never ever want to smell like it or be
