is the letter what letter is this that’s right that is the letter t and we have t stories today because we have stories about tricksters we are going to hear some trickster stories today some of my favorites and we are still playing the summer game for just a few more days so if you are playing the summer game looking for the summer game code for this story time that is tricky tricksters tricky tricksters is the summer game code for today t is for trickster all right before we get started of course we have to take our stretch so let’s take a big stretch out wide stretch of toe give yourself a hug reach down and tap your toes reach up tap your nose find your ear find your chin find your tummy reach your arm across and wiggle your fingers reach your other arm across and wiggle your fingers stretch out wide again and up up up up up deep breath all right great job everybody we are going to start today with one of my uh favorite older trickster stories i’ve been telling for a long time this is monkey a trickster tale from india we are going to read the book this is by gerald mcdermott let me adjust just a little bit so you can see me a little better there we go perfect monkey chattery monkey he lived high on a tree tie in a tree on the banks of the wide flowing river monkey jumped so high and so fast through the treetops no one could catch him but catching monkey was exactly what crocodile wanted to do murmured hungry crocodile how delicious a monkey heart would be crocodile slithered into the water good morning monkey he called out good morning crocodile answered monkey where are you going to the island in the middle of the river answered crocodile oh yum said monkey delicious mangoes grow there but it’s too far away for me to swing climb on my back my friend called crocodile i’ll take you to the island i don’t know what’s gonna happen monkey swung down from the tree and hopped onto crocodiles scaly back as crocodile glided through the deep dark water he sank lower and lower and monkey began to get wet oh my goodness i cannot swim shouted monkey how well i know said crocodile now i’m going to eat your heart eat my heart some monkey what a pity i left it up in the tree you left your heart in the tree crocodile ground bald oh what a nuisance crocodile returned with monkey to the muddy brown river bank as soon as they reached the shore monkey leaped off crocodile’s back and scampered up a tall tree laughing and chattering look my heart is here called monkey from the treetop just climb up and get it crocodile grunted and thrashed and swam away i don’t think he’s happy but now monkey wanted the delicious mangoes more than ever he leaped from treetop to treetop until he discovered some large rocks far down river he saw that if he skipped across the rocks to the island he could feast on mangoes every day the next morning crocodile came swimming down the river looking for monkey he heard monkey chattering he saw a monkey jump from tree to rock to island i shall pretend i’m a rock said crocodile when monkey jumps on me i will snap him up heart and all crocodile lay low in the water all day long waiting for monkey when monkey had eaten his fill he headed for home with all the mangoes he could carry he jumped off the island onto a rock in this river he was about to jump onto another rock but something was wrong monkey looked closer then he called out in a cheery voice hello rock crocodile was silent and he lay low in the water monkey called out again i say good evening rock crocodile said nothing oh well rock will you not greet me this evening asked monkey crocodile thought the rock must usually answer so he said good evening ha you’re not rock said monkey you’re crocodile i’m as good as a rock said crocodile you can jump on me to get to the other side oh what a splendid idea so monkey here i come monkey got ready to leap crocodile closed his eyes and opened his jaws but instead of leaping monkey popped a mango right into crocodile’s mouth bang crocodile snapped his jaws shut quickly monkey jumped on crocodile’s nose then onto the muddy brown riverbank laughing and chattering monkey scampered up a tree and swung from branch to branch your teeth may be sharp monkey shouted to crocodile but your mind is dull now monkey feasts on delicious mangoes every day crocodile lays low in the water keeping an eye on him and when monkey crosses the river to go home he is always careful to jump on a rock not on a crocodile the end monkey did a good job of tricking crocodile in that story all right we have another story but first let’s let’s just let’s let’s move a little bit can i see your fingers i have 10 fingers they all belong to me i can make them do things do you want to see i can make them jump high i can make them jump low i can fold them tight and hold them just so i can squeeze them tight i can open them wide i can wave them all around i can make them all hide i can make them jump high i can make them jump low i can fold them tight and hold them just so nice job all right our next story is a little bit of a longer one so make sure you get comfortable and settle in and this is a story featuring one of our favorite characters anansi the spider i’m sure you’ve heard some anansi stories before and this one is called a nancy and the magic stick it was a fine bright day all of the animals were working in their gardens all except the nancy the spider anansi lay in his front yard fast asleep lion and zebra and giraffe came walking by oh look at a nancy zebra said he is so lazy the paint on his house is peeling off his yard is full of trash and he sleeps all day long ha a nancy is so lazy he falls asleep standing up said lion giraffe added anazi is so lazy that other spiders put spider webs on him their loud laughter woke a nazi up from his nap hey some people are trying to sleep around here well that’s the problem you lazy bones they laugh you shouldn’t be sleeping all day long i am not lazy i am just thinking my body is resting so that my brain can work so hard said a nancy but the animals laughed even harder said a nancy i don’t have to listen to this i’ll find another place to sleep i mean think not sleep think so a nazi started walking walking walking down the road before he knew it he was at warthog’s house warthog also liked to sleep and today he was fast asleep in his porch hammock but even though he was sleeping his house and porch and garden were very clean how does he do that admired a nancy he doesn’t do anything but his house is perfect so a nancy watched and waited behind a bush peeking out hoping to find warthog’s secret a little while later warthog woke up oh hey oh i see a dust pile over in the corner of my porch i need my magic stick oh here it is and warthog said lucas punch pocus magic stick fix my problems quick quick quick can you say that with me hocus pocus magic stick fix my problems quick quick quick and right before a nancy’s eyes the magic stick floated into the air and swept up the whole dust pile leaving the floor squeaky clean all clean said warthog time to stop magic stick er bra cadabra and the magic stick fell to the ground waiting to be used again wow said a nancy now that is what i need oh if i had that magic stick my house would be as beautiful as warthogs and nobody would laugh at me again so when warthog fell asleep again anansi grabbed the magic stick and ran ran ran ran ran well after not too long and nancy got tired and he stopped to catch his breath wait wait a minute he said why am i carrying the magic stick when it could be carrying me so he said ready hocus pocus stick fix my problems quick quick quick and the stick picked up little anansi and floated him all the way home when they got there anansi remembered the words to make it stop abracadabra and boom the magic stiff stick dropped and so did a nonstick hey next time put me down gently magic stick all right i think it’s time to pick up the trash so he said the magic words ready hocus pocus magic stick fix my problems quick quick quick and the stick waved around in the air picking up all the trash in the yard it whirled and twirled around and it threw all the garbage into lion’s yard yes now time to make it stop and bra cadabra the stick fell down good job stick next up is my house i could use some new paint so a nancy said hocus pocus magic stick fix my problems quick quick quick and the magic stick started to paint in nazi’s house a beautiful bright pink it splashed the paint everywhere and it threw some all over zebra’s porch so there’s zebra said a nancy now let’s stop magic stick abracadabra well the only thing left is the garden and it needs some watering so let’s go magic stick and a nancy said the spell hocus pocus magic stick fix my problems quick quick quick the magic stick turned on the hose and sprayed water all over the garden keep watering magic stick don’t stop till i say so said a nancy but then [Music] and he fell asleep he was tired from ordering the magic stick to do all of his work well the magic stick watered and watered and water the vegetables got bigger and bigger and bigger and guess what anansi kept sleeping and sleeping and sleeping he didn’t wake up the water got higher and higher first it made a pond then a stream then a giant river then a lake oh my gosh a nancy finally woke up to find himself floating on water oh no so the nazi the magic stick didn’t stop watering he tried his best to think of the words to stop the stick but he couldn’t think of them ah abra palabra no that’s not it ambra my grandma no that’s not a abra spatula he thought and thought but he could not think of the words and finally he cried help well just then warthog floated by on a raft i think i know what happened abracadabra and finally the water stopped all of the animals loved the lake and they played in it all day they looked around for an ansi but he seemed to have disappeared where is a nazi they all asked but anansi was nowhere to be found but we know where anansi was he was far away on the other side of the lake floating along in his new houseboat sleeping all day planning new tricks because that is what a nancy does best the end all right good listening everyone i know that’s a little bit of a longer one but it’s so fun and i’m seeing his magic stick all right we have one
