"Now, Israel, give heednto the statutes and ordinances that I am teachingnyou to observe, so that you may livento enter and occupy the land that the Lord, nthe God of your fathers, is giving you. You must neither add anythingnto what I command you, nor take anything away from it, but keep the commandmentsnof the Lord your God with which I am charging you. You mustnobserve them diligently, for this will show your wisdomnand discernment to the peoples, who, when they hearnall these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wisenand discerning people!' For what other great nationnhas a god so near to it as the Lord our God is whenever we call to Him? And what other great nation has statutesnand ordinances as just as this entire law that I amnsetting before you today?" The word of the Lord. PARISHIONERS: Thanks be to God. # Whoever walks blamelesslynand does what is right # # And speaks the truthnfrom their heart # # Whoever does not slander # # With their tongue # # Whoever doesnno evil to a friend # # Nor takes up a reproach # # Against a neighbour # # In whose eyesnthe wicked one is despised # # But who honours those # # Who fear the Lord # # Whoever stands by their oath # # Even to their heart # # Who does not lend moneynat interest # # And does not take a bribe # # Against the innocent # # One who does these things # # Shall never be moved # A reading fromnthe letter of Saint James. "Every generous act of giving, nwith every perfect gift, is from above, coming downnfrom the Father of lights, with whom there isnno variation or shadow due to change. In fulfilmentnof His own purpose, He gave us birthnby the word of truth, so that we would becomena kind of first fruits of His creatures. Welcome with meeknessnthe implanted word that has the powernto save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not merely hearersnwho deceive themselves. Religion that is purenand undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphansnand widows in their distress, and to keep oneselfnunstained by the world." The word of the Lord. PARISHIONERS: Thanks be to God. (Organ playing) # Hallelujah # # Hallelujah... # # Hallelujah # # Hallelujah... # # Hallelujah # # Hallelujah... # # The Father gave us birth # # By the word of truth # # That we wouldnbecome first fruits # # Of His creation # # Hallelujah # # Hallelujah... # # Hallelujah # The Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:nAnd with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. PARISHIONERS:nGlory to you, O Lord. "When the Phariseesnand some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalemngathered around Jesus, they noticednthat some of His disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, nand all the Jews, do not eat unless theynthoroughly wash their hands, thus observingnthe tradition of the elders. And they do not eatnanything from the market unless they wash it. And there are also many otherntraditions that they observe, the washing of cups, npots, and bronze kettles. So the Phariseesnand the scribes asked Him, 'Why do Your disciples not live according tonthe tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?' Jesus said to them, 'Isaiah prophesized rightlynabout you hypocrites. As it is written, "This peoplenhonours me with their lips, but their heartsnare far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching humannprecepts as doctrines.” You abandonnthe commandment of God and hold to human tradition.' Then Jesus called the crowdnagain and said to them, 'Listen to me,nall of you, and understand. There is nothingnoutside a person that by going inncan defile them, but the thingsnthat come out of a person are what defiles them. For it is from within, nfrom the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, and folly. All these evil thingsncome from within, and they defile a person.'" The gospel of the Lord. PARISHIONERS: Praise to You,nLord Jesus Christ. Dear sisters and brothers, Jesus offers us today some searing words. Did you catch them? Here they are. "These peoplenhonour me with their lips, but their heartsnare far from me." Hm. Searing words, aren't they, when we think about themnin relation to ourselves? "These peoplenhonour me with their lips, but their heartsnare far from me." They tend to cut to the quick. You see, Jesus, today, is questioningnthe significance and value of the pious practices called "the great tradition." And, those pious practices included rituals for ablutions and for eating foods. And, He was also challengingnthe scribes and Pharisees to give greater attention to the weightier mattersnof the law, such as, the 10 commandments, nand the law of love. Now, in relation to ourselves, I can ask myself, "Do I honour Jesus with my lips? Do I even do that much? Or, do I trynto cover up my faith, or try to hide it, or disguise the thingsnI say about my faith? So that, if I do so, I may not appearnto be too public about it, but remain in synchnwith most of the rest of our secular world." Next, I can ask, "Is my heart far from Christ?" Actually, I prefer to ask, "Is my mind far from Christ?" It makes more sensenfor me to recognize that I think with my mind more so than with my heart. So, where is my mindnon a daily basis in relationship to Jesus? Is it far from the Lord, or do I even know Him? Do I relate to Him personally? You might want to asknyourselves the same questions. Is your mind far from the Lord? Then Jesus goes to point outnthe sins of the mind. And they are the thingsnthat keep us far from the Lord. He says, "From within people, from their minds, nthe evil intentions emerge, unchastity, theft, murder, nadultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, narrogance, and folly. All these things and others." The older we get, I think, the more we realizenthat the sins of the mind really have to be rooted out. So, how do we do that prior to our judgment day? First is awareness. We need to know which sinsnkeep us far from the Lord, and which need to be rooted out. Jesus offers a pretty good list, I would think, nfor each of us to examine. Second is prayer. We might not get too far on ournown in the battle against sin, although, disciplinendoes make a difference. But more than that, nwe need divine help. That is divine grace to help usnto overcome these sins. Certainly, ncome our judgment day, we will want to be purged of as many sins as possible. Kindly join menin the profession of faith. I believe in God,nthe Father Almighty... ALL: ..Creatornof Heaven and Earth and in Jesus Christ,nHis Only Son, our Lord, who was conceivednby the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, nsuffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, ndied, and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day,nHe rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right handnof God, the Father Almighty. From there He willncome to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, nthe Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, nthe forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, nand the life everlasting. Amen. Blessed are You, Lord,nGod of all creation. For through Your goodness, we have receivednthe bread we offer You, which earth has givennand human hands have made. It will become, for us,nthe bread of life. PARISHIONERS:nBlessed be God forever. By the mysterynof this water and wine, may we come to sharenin the divine life of Christ, who humbled Himselfnto share in our humanity. Blessed are You, Lord,nGod of all creation. For through Your goodness, we have receivednthe wine we offer You, fruit of the vine, nand work of human hands. It will becomenour spiritual drink. PARISHIONERS:nBlessed be God forever. With humble spiritnand contrite heart, may we be accepted by You,nO God, and may our sacrifice in Your sight this daynbe pleasing to You, Lord God. Wash me of my inequity.nCleanse me of my sin. Pray, sisters and brothers, nthat my sacrifice and yours may be acceptablento God, the Almighty Father. PARISHIONERS: May the Lord accept the sacrificenat your hands for the praise and glorynof His name, for our good, and the goodnof all of His Holy Church. May this sacred offering,nO Lord, confer on us always, the blessing of salvation, thatnwhat it celebrates in mystery, it may accomplish in power, nthrough Jesus Christ, our Lord. PARISHIONERS: Amen. The Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:nAnd with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. PARISHIONERS:nWe lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanksnto the Lord, our God. PARISHIONERS:nIt is right and just. It is truly right and just, nour duty and our salvation, always and everywherento give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, nalmighty and eternal God. For through His paschal mystery, He accomplishednthe marvelous deed, by which He has freed usnfrom the yoke of sin and death, summoning us to the glorynof being now called a chosen race,na royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peoplenfor your own possession to proclaim everywherenYour mighty works. For You havencalled us out of darkness into Your own wonderful light. And so,nwith angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with allnthe hosts and powers of Heaven, we sing the hymn of Your glory, as without end we acclaim. (Organ music playing) # Holy, holy # # Holy # # Lord, God of hosts # # Heaven and Earth # # Are full of Your glory # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Blessed is he # # Who comes # # In the name of the Lord # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Hosanna # # In the highest # You are, indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, ntherefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down Your Spiritnupon them like the dewfall, so that they may become, for us, the body and bloodnof our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time He was betrayed and entered willinglyninto His Passion, He took bread, nand giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, "Take this, nall of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you." (Chimes ringing) In a similar waynwhen supper was ended, He took the chalice, nand once more giving thanks, He gave it tonHis disciples saying, "Take this, nall of you, and drink from it. For this isnthe chalice of my blood, the blood of the newnand eternal covenant, which will benpoured out for you and for many, nfor the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me." (Chimes ringing) The mystery of faith. (Organ playing) # When we eat this bread # # And drink this cup # # We proclaim Your death # # O Lord # # Until You come # # Again # Therefore, nas we celebrate the memorial of His deathnand Resurrection we offer You, Lord, nthe bread of life, and the chalice of salvation, giving thanksnthat you have held us worthy to be in Your presencenand minister to You. Humbly we pray, that, partaking of the bodynand blood of Christ, we may be gatheredninto one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, Your Churchnspread throughout the world and bring hernto the fullness of charity, together with Francis our Pope, Thomas our bishop, nand all the clergy. Remember, also, nour brothers and sisters who have fallen asleepnin the hope of the Resurrection, and all who havendied in Your mercy. Welcome themninto the light of Your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that, with the BlessednVirgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, nwith the blessed apostles, and all the saints who havenpleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to bencoheirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify You through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Through Him,nwith Him, and in Him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unitynof the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is Yours forever and ever. PARISHIONERS: Amen. At the Saviour's command, nand formed by divine teaching, together, let us pray. ALL: Our Father, nwho art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on Earthnas it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive thosenwho trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, nwe pray, from every evil.
