Team Europe Win First-Ever PTO Collins Cup | Race Reaction & Highlights

finally it’s here the long awaited collins cup hosted by the pto team europe versus team usa versus team international six of the best men and women competing for each team across 12 exciting races and i’m here in the middle of all the action at the exponent sphere in slovakia and i’m going to be giving you a behind-the-scenes insight as to how the race unfolds so for the past few days i’ve been an uber fanboy at this event i’ve been in amongst the action the smack talk and even some of the decisions leading into those captains picks now for this event it’s quite unique we want have one athlete from each team chosen per match leaving us with 12 individual races we have uber bikers up against other uber bikers super runners up against other super runners and just simply wild cards thrown in to shake things up it is going to be absolutely epic now if you haven’t already seen our collins cup draft video then make sure you check that out so you can see who will be facing who and for each of the 12 matches the winner will be awarded three points second two points and third one point there’s also some additional bonus points up for grabs half a point for every two minute margin up to a maximum of one and a half points for a six minute plus margin victory now all those points are collated for each of the teams resulting in the winning team earning the coveted collins cup trophy and the losing team the broken spokes trophy now obviously this race and the matches have already happened but whether you know the results or not do stay tuned because i’m taking you behind the scenes firstly let’s recap on the course for these matches it all starts and finishes at the state-of-the-art x ex-bionic sphere situated on the banks of the river danube in samarin slovakia the 36 competitors set off in 12 individual matches three athletes in each match they will start with a two kilometre single lap swim in the river danube before a relatively long run to transition before mounting their bikes they will then head out towards the closed highway for a very fast out and back 80 kilometer cycle they will then rack their bikes back at the exponent sphere before taking on a single loop 18 kilometer run we’re now just minutes away from sending off our first race of the day and we’re going to be starting with the bed wait until you see this opening [Music] a bit of drama in the swim so it looks like jackie perry was on course but had already been dropped by the uh leaving two which includes anyhow so he’s actually gave back some time [Music] [Music] they’re on it [Music] so [Music] well it’s just started raining we’ve just caught up with torsten as the women all out on the bike what’s going on taking a quick break before the men start but um seems to be pretty exciting i mean the technology that people try to put in place seems to be working mostly well some iffy stuff with gps trackers and track is getting lost where taylor tells the story that he had to replace one of the trackers for for i think sarah crowley or someone so that’s uh sometimes having his issues but mostly i think a lot of this stuff is really impressive to me i mean the graphs that they’re putting up with the points and the overall standings uh so from that side um it’s it’s uh been anxious for us in the days before well i’ve got how much of the stuff is going to work i’ve got to say watching it it’s just looking amazing at the moment so talking of the standings reports what’s going on what’s happening i mean momentum seems to be with team us at that point which is kind of a bit of a curveball i think we were all expecting team you what you did say yeah i i did say europe is likely to win all six of the female matches though the tricky part will be of course we have race dynamics and triathlon is never decided after the swim um but certainly the us took things by the horns in the swim uh tail leading out gapping daniella casey katie’s staying with lucy and then really hammering transition yeah that i mean katie was really anxious to stay with lucy and now lucy is trying to get away from her in all the heights of the bike and seems to be working really hard to try and get away from her so currently team usa are leading this yeah i think they have like 18 12 10 or something europe even being in last point last place at this point which i’m sure they will want to avoid as much as possible staying in that place but i think the legs where the europeans are going to shine are still coming up usually there’s the stronger ones on the bike and on the run so even if the u.s is looking pretty good after the swim it’s not the end of the story and we also have still have the men’s matches coming up absolutely well exciting times thanks ever so much sure right grab my lunch all of my hands here check out this behind the scenes it’s very all about magic’s happening yeah that’s the live broadcast that you guys are witnessing out there [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] come on well that is the first six matches down so all the women’s races and it is still very much on the line as to which team wins currently team europe seems to be pushing ahead but team usa are very close in contention running very quickly through all those women’s matches it was taylor live that took the first round very impressively with daniela ryf coming in second we had lucy charles barkley winning the second round ahead of casey ferris and paula findlay third round jackie herring and that was the super runner race with annie howard actually coming in in second jackie herring actually having the fastest run of the day for the women ellie salthouse winning that fourth round unfortunately holly lawrence crashing out at the end of the bike emma palette brown then winning the fifth round and then katrina matthews rounding out with also another very impressive run on that sixth match and before we go and catch up and watch the finish of the men’s race which obviously going on around us right now we went and caught up with some of the women as they just crossed the line cat what an amazing race i mean swim bike run took me through it really quickly um horrendous swim demoralising korean [Applause] i was disappointed that i couldn’t catch sorry carrie i’m disappointed i couldn’t catch justin and i just kept pushing and pushing and pushing i couldn’t see her at all so that was demoralizing but um just kept with it and actually i realized i only had i was keeping the gap rather than letting it go which i thought i was losing it so then to sort of make that up in transition and then on the first couple of k i was like yeah i’ve got this molly i don’t know if it’s too [Music] i was just like playing it strong because like like my kind of tactic was because i knew she was just gonna like keep with me whatever i did um so and i kind of backed my run um so yeah it was all over when i wiped out on the roundabout um and i couldn’t get it the wheel spinning for a while so it wasn’t just a case of jumping back and like by the time then like skye went and yeah i was just trying to get my wheels spinning again but um yeah and then i did i was kind of riding gingerly back thinking i’ll just like truck it back to transition and then um i saw natasha right in the dismount line she said skye’s only like a minute and a bit which i think she liked too yeah i think it was way more than that i’ve got to ask i know everyone’s asking the moment road bike obviously you’re super comfortable on a road bike it’s super powerful i mean you just like riding a road bike well i don’t have a time trial bike and i was only invited to the college cup after boulder i needed to get approval so like i was already in montreal and so then the next weekend week i was giving edmonton so first of all like less than three weeks to go from my road bike that i’ve been training in the same position for a long time and and get a new world but that’s just didn’t keep smart specialist i asked him and he’s like one thing i would recommend is this and he said if you could get a revival like he’s like i can ask around but that was my mom’s christmas present this year from my dad got that with my mom so i’m like mom can i please use your disc and she said yes so it’s great to have a mom who does the sport thanks to taylor’s mom out there yes thank you and i will be returning it in pristine condition hopefully as long as it gets back in the airlines wow your mom’s got to live up to a lot on that disc now and she’s riding it well i broke it in brilliant thanks so much [Music] so [Music] great well we’ve literally just finished with the men’s racing and yes again super exciting so the first round which is technically match seven was won by jan frodena with a blistering run the next round match eight also blistering run from gustav eden i think the fastest run of the day then we had lionel sanders winning that uber right biker round in match nine daniel backyard winning match 10 against ben knew to max newman and in match 11 that was braden curry again with the absolutely phenomenal performance finishing over five minutes ahead of matt hanson and then match 12 the final round was won by jackson laundry only just ahead of joe skipper right lionel pretty eventful day there’s a bike crash in there you’ve cut your hair i feel like i i feel like everybody crashed everyone i talked to i was right how was the race it was a lot of fun man as as advertised it was uh you know not super strategic though starkey was trying to drop us we had a great swim yeah i’m getting out all right i mean i i really am uh learning about swimming i mean i still suck in the pool like horrible absolutely horrible but i’m understanding feel for the water and i’m understanding you know i’m good at chasing carrots and uh starkey the carrot was going all over the place trying to drop us and uh kenai basically was like i’m not gonna keep swimming this stupid zigzag and it was a mistake to do that because i mean at the very end i was like turkey whatever you keep going and doing whatever you want so i started swimming straight and i lost probably 10 seconds in 400 meters because i wasn’t on his feet so uh i just keep learning lessons and then on the bike my goal and i already told starkey i’m out biking and so i was out of transition ahead of him and then i was just going hard and i went into a corner and crashed and so that’s what you get are you feeling all right though yeah i’m all right i don’t know we’ll find out tomorrow uh i thought for sure for a second there i was like all right the scott broken hit that little broken hip final broken hip but fortunately it seemed to function all right you ran pretty well yeah so i mean how are you feeling after quite an eventful last month or two i felt like an iron man asked me on the run yeah i could tell that i i had no speed yeah and uh so i just said to myself stay within yourself stay on top of the nutrition and if he catches you then we’ll have a war and i knew keenly would be running me down fortunately we didn’t have to resort to that i think if it was a half we would have been closer to resorting to that but catching someone is one thing dropping them is another and uh i feel like if you caught me well let’s battle but uh it was fun it was a lot of fun nice well done thanks very much cheers well what a day we have had the inaugural collins cup and i would say that has been an almighty success partly because europe won not that i’m biased now it has really been a fantastic day some epic battles out there some unexpected results as well let us know what you think about the collins cup in the comments section down below but i personally think
