The Canberra volunteers helping feed the city’s most vulnerable people during lockdown | ABC News

they are a tireless bunch delivering meals with a smile and a chat not even a pandemic gets in their way thank you meals on wheels has been running for 53 years in canberra today 120 volunteers deliver frozen meals to up to 300 people mostly elderly and sometimes clients with a disability needing help with meal time the program is funded by the government and the food supplied by local businesses in canberra and across the border in queanbeyan where 40 volunteers deliver 1500 meals a month yes i look forward to them i’m watching they hit the window when they come i like the sausages and the vegetables and the gravy and the whistles i’ve tried a lot of them there’s still a lot more i’ve got to try but it’s not just about the food the volunteers are often the only person the clients see over a week especially at present our clients love to have a chat we also do do a welfare check to make sure that they are okay and interest in the service has been strong particularly during lockdown there’s a lot of people that are feeling quite nervous about even just going to the supermarket like everywhere the pandemic has forced other changes we have modified how we package our meals to ensure that the client doesn’t touch the same bag that the delivery person is touching we obviously will stand back and allow that social distancing space those looking forward to each delivery can’t praise the volunteers highly enough it’s a really big service you know it’s my advice get it if you can a ringing endorsement for generous help thank you very much that’s okay bye-bye elizabeth byrne abc news canberra thank you thanks man you
