just be words that we sing but the action of our lives to come and lay all to give our lives to you that you may use us and that we may serve you move in our lives we pray changes transform us moving our hearts and the lives of every person here meet you last week amen amen amen what a wonderful day it was for many of us that we can say what a wonderful day it was that day that jesus came into our life the day that he came and he changed and he transformed us that day that we said yes to him and yes to that invitation and knowing him as our lord and savior and if you are yet to do that if you are yet to say yes to jesus wholeheartedly you’ll never regret regret it is the best decision that you’ll ever make and i invite you to do that today and each one of us as we leave this place will have said yes to him yeah well it’s summer well somebody didn’t tell the weather but it is summer and we have recently been on our summer holidays um and like many we went away and we went away to devon and it was a little bit windy it was occasionally sunny well a little bit windy if you speak to sunisha he will set his gale force winds um but it was a little bit windy it wasn’t gail falls winds it was a little bit windy it was occasionally sunny and it was sometimes rainy and we made our way um as all good people should to the beach my husband wore his coat but we made our way to the beach um grace loved the beach grace loved to play in the water she loved to play in the sand but one thing grace did not like was sandy feet grace hated sandy feet and as she would arrive at the beach she would say to me as we got out we had a little tent to shelter us supposedly from the sun but more so from the wind so we had our little tent and i’d get out my blanket and she would say today i am not putting on a swimming costume and i’d say why on earth do you wouldn’t you not put on a swimming costume we’ve come to the beach she says because i am not playing in the sand or in the sea and you say grace why on earth not you enjoyed it so much so the last time you came and she would say because i do not like sandy feet and then what would happen is that ultimately the draw of the sand and the drawer of the sea would call her to her and eventually she would make herself um make her way to the sand and to the sea and then you would see that moment where she had finished playing and the frustration that was as she ran up and down the beach trying to clear her feet of sand in the water only to arrive back at um the cover the blanket to realize that her feet were full of sand and there would often be that little um moan shall we say or a cry that would say but i don’t like sandy feet isn’t that right grace grace doesn’t like sandy feet unfortunately for grace she lives a time where there’s wellington boots and trainers she lives in a time where she wears shoes and socks and even on days she does wear sandals she walks on pavements and tarmac and inside houses with nice carpets and lino floors fortunately for grace she doesn’t live in a time where her feet would get sandy every single day and when jesus lived and when jesus walked this earth things were a little bit different feet got sandier feet got dirtier just in the daily living and the daily going around life if you wore sandals they might have worn sandals on their shoes they wouldn’t have looked like the sandals that we had today but they would have worn some type of sandals on their shoes on their feet on their shoes on their feet even though to protect their feet but roundabouts if you have ever been on a sandy beach wearing sandals you will realize that your feet soon get full of sand and only a little bit of water needs to come and that sand is caked around your toes so to say i want us to think a little bit about the disciples i want us to think a little bit about these sandy dusty dirty feet so i’m going to need a disciple so luca would you like luca you have volunteered yourself luca is going to be our disciple today everybody say well hello luka well done and i want us to think about the time when jesus was and i want us to think about sandy feats now i made one mistake when i was preparing i forgot to bring sandals for his feet and he doesn’t want to get his sandals dirty so unfortunately he’s going to go barefooted this morning so here we have i’m going to need a little bit of interaction with this we have luca here um if you’re on camera you’re probably not going to be able to see this so here we have luca now luca you’re going to be a disciple that didn’t have enough money for sandals so you’re going to go barefooted so here we go oh i’ve got a thing full of goodies here so um hang on a minute when you do up a knot too tight on my bag okay so here is luca we i’m we’re going to put him in the tray here goes luca would you stand in the tray with your big feet see just like just like see one thing hasn’t changed since the time of jesus is jesus we all still sweat our feet all still occasionally smell a little bit cheesy how do you smell lucca um right i want us to think so what would have in the time of jesus that the disciples walked along the road what might have there been on the grounds people oh dirt so well i have found big sharp stones i have got some dirt and if we are fortunate enough in my dirt there might still be some insects [Music] oh can you imagine what their toenails looked like so there guys we have some nice dirt luca would you like to tread around in that dirt for a little bit and what else might have we have had on the ground you got to think that it’s quite dry it’d have been quite dusty it might have been a bit sandy wouldn’t it okay so we’ve got some sand here here goes the mix so mix it nice and round there goes you’ve got sandy and dirty feet anybody else what might the ground look like what might it might have been a little bit moist there might well it’s quite dry i was looking at the weather and what the weather white have been like it might have been it might have been a bit dry it would occasionally have rained but there would have been some other reasons that we might get um a little bit of water on the ground um you see in the time of jesus livestock and animals would have probably walked around quite a lot more so than today and their streets and their pavements occasionally something would come past and maybe have go to the toilet um oh but you know what the dung see there may have even been i i feel um if you’ve ever eaten one of these they’re amazing um but unfortunately we’re going to use it so i think that there might have also been [Music] well we’re going to pretend it’s poo so there might have been occasionally a camel or a donkey or a sheep or a horse oh yeah yeah oh can you imagine and they’re walking around none it wouldn’t have gone exactly on them but they would have been walking around and they probably wouldn’t know that they had stepped in it they wouldn’t know until they came home and they were sitting at a table reclining at a table and can you imagine everyone goes who stepped in something today is that if it happens in your house you go who stepped in something but these these disciples would have gone around and it would have been caked to the edge so look look we’re going to leave you walking around children maybe you want to draw me some pictures some stinky feet um as we introduce our session for today luka you keep walking around in there we want you to oh look there goes look the mud at the bottom you’re not really getting to the mud in the bottom it goes oh dear i shouldn’t have touched it um i’m gonna have dirty fingers for the rest of the rest of my time now aren’t i um okay so look you could have a walk around in that children you draw me a picture of some stinky feet and we think that maybe no shoes there would be sanders it would be muddy it’d be dusty it’d be dirty there may have been oh they’re taking their shoes off over there the children are really getting into this having a look about oh they’re gonna draw around their feet we’re gonna have some really good pictures of stinky feets and as we open our passage today in john chapter 13 it opens with these words it was just before the passover festival jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the father having loved his own who were in the world he loved them till the end it’s not long now until jesus was about to die oh thank you oh look at somebody oh somebody comes up with a baby wipe it’s not long now until jesus is about to die it tells us that he knew interesting isn’t it that he knew that his hour had almost come he knew that his time was drawing to an end he knew that what was before him we know as we if we were to read further in this passage and we were read to right down to the end we would realize that jesus knew that peter was gonna deny him he knew that judas was going to betray him and he must have known also that they were all going to desert him he knew what was to come he knew what was about to happen next yet john tells us that having loved his own who were in their world he loved them to the end i love that phrase having loved having loved his own who were in the world he loved them to the end he loved his disciples he’d walked with them he had talked with them he’d led them he’d taught them he’d carried cared for them sorry he protected them and now his end was drawing near and the love he had for them was to the end in spite of everything in spite of everything that was about to happen in spite of the fact that there would be confusion there would be denial there would be their failures in just a short time he was going to ask them to pray while he went a little bit further to pray and they were going to fall asleep when he was arrested they would desert him and they would flee and they were going to fear they would they would experience fear and go into hiding but yet we read he loved them till the end and he was about to inc he was about to demonstrate this love an incredible act of service so luca how are your feet doing they need some more water do they you’re thinking that they’re not quite sticky enough yeah there guys he’s really getting into this well let’s find him a seat so he can see his feet now even if he was wearing sandals the likelihood is it would probably go on show us your toes it would have all got stuck between that oh i love the fact that he said mind the toenails can you imagine that for the disciples as they walked along the road it may have been quite regularly that their toenails got full of dirt and sand and rubbish and all kinds of things kids let me see if if you’ve got some dirt pictures of some smelly stinky dirty feet hold them up let me see oh wow some fantastic picture there oh some great pictures there oh let me see oh looking good looking good i can see there’s another great one down there there’s another one going on at the back there we got some good old love it some stinky feet i love the there’s waves of smell coming off those feet down there well children i want you to all have a listen maybe in a moment you want to draw me another picture of the things that we hear that so karina would you like to come and read us our scripture for today from john chapter 13 verses 1 to 17. good morning everyone so john 13 verse verses 1 to 17 says this before the passover celebration jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his father he had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth and now he loved them to the very end it was time for supper and the devil had already prompted judas son of simon iscariot to betray jesus jesus knew that the father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from god and returned to god so he got up from the table took off his robe wrapped a towel around his waist and poured water into a basin he then began to wash the disciples feet drying them with the towel he had around him when jesus came to simon peter peter said to him lord are you going to wash my feet jesus replied you don’t understand now what i am doing but someday you will no peter protested you will never wash my feet jesus replied unless i wash you you won’t belong to me simon peter exclaimed then wash my hands and head as well lord not just my feet jesus replied a person who has bathed all over does not need to wash except for the feet to be entirely clean and you disciples are clean but not all of you for jesus knew who would betray him this is what he meant when he said not all of you are clean after washing their feet he put on his robe again and sat down and asked do you understand what i was doing you call me teacher and lord and you are right because that’s what i am and since i your lord and teacher have washed your feet you ought to wash each other’s feet i have given you an example to follow do as i have done to you i tell you the truth slaves are not greater than their master nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message now that you know these things god will bless you for doing them so here we have this story this account of jesus washing the disciples feet so we read that the meal was already in progress hang on a minute the meal was already in progress some versions say the meal had finished but our version today said the meal was already in progress it was already happening and the writer john had made made no reference that the fact that they’d already washed their feet i think if they’d already washed their feet he would have told us so it seems to be that here are the disciples reclining at the table with their feet not washed now my understanding is that tables even though we often see lots of artwork with jesus sitting up a table nice and straight my understanding is that tables that um in the time of jesus would have looked a lot different it would perhaps be a bit more roman into the fact that they would have perhaps lied um or leaned on cushions as they ate around a table with their feet behind them their feet that were possibly and probably still unwashed maybe it was as they came into the room just maybe maybe it was as they came in the room that all the disciples looked at one another somebody thought that somebody should wash someone’s feet and everyone decided but i don’t want it to be me maybe they thought it was a bit embarrassing to position themselves as the servant in the room maybe they thought it was a bit embarrassing to position themselves as the least because we know quite regularly or it seems to me quite regularly there seems to be this discussion that keeps coming up who’s the greatest because jesus addresses it several times in the gospels this discussion about who’s greater so maybe it was that nobody wanted to place themselves into the position of a servant maybe it was something everybody knew needed to happen but that moment passed you know that kind of moment where you go somebody needs to do that somebody needs to do that oh well let’s just move on and pretend that somebody did it that moment where it becomes so awkward that nobody does it maybe it was that they were all sitting there with their dirty smelly feet and then jesus comes and he does something quite unexpected it says this so he jesus got up from the meal took off his outer clothing and wrapped the towel around his waist and after that he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet drying them with a towel that was wrapped around him i wonder what that felt like that what was the reaction in the room that moment where jesus gets up gets up fills a basin with water i wonder if in that moment they went ah jesus is going to wash their feet or was it like when andrew got up just now you all went what’s he doing was there that moment where the disciples went oh what’s happening here what’s going on here what’s interesting is that john remembers it so vividly as he writes all those years later the gospel he remembers that jesus got up from the meal took off his outer cloak and wrapped the towel around his waist and after that he poured water in a basin and began to wash the disciples feet drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him i want you to imagine for a moment that you were there how would you have felt if you were one of the disciples having jesus begin to wash the feet of the others around you when you felt shocked would have it been that you felt surprised would maybe you felt a little bit guilty that you hadn’t got up and done it before how would you have felt in that moment i wonder just chat with the person next to you or across the aisle talk to somebody else around about you how would you have felt what would you what would you have thought about what you have um considers so talk to somebody next to you how do you think you would have felt if you were one of the disciples um how do you felt i wonder how we’d have felt how did your feet feel having your feet washed luca fine you feel fine it was a relaxing moment was it lovely goes i wonder what it felt like so so there’s lots of different ideas of how it might have felt i can hear going around lucas said that his feet have felt feel nice now they’ve all been washed now they’re all feeling nice and clean that moment they’re feeling nice and clean so i think for me as i consider this and as i consider this example of jesus this example jesus gives that later on that he says and he says that we’re to follow with the example that he’s given and i think back to what we said at the beginning i think back to to remembering that jesus knew what was coming he knew that these same disciple who was washing their feet would desert him he knew as he washed peter’s feet that peter would deny him yet knowing not knowing this he chooses to take on the role as a servant knowing this he loves them till the end and knowing them knowing this he washes they’re probably dirty feets and i think for me that’s perhaps one of the most challenging things as i spent some time thinking about this scripture and pondering upon what it was what it was i was reading what perhaps is the most challenging thing is this example that jesus gives us this example that me that is that actually we don’t only serve those who treat us well but also those who may disappoint us those who at times may turn away from us that we can’t dictate how it is that those whose we serve how it is that they will respond to us but yet jesus calls us to wash one another’s feet to serve one another and i think that’s perhaps the most challenging thing because i don’t know about you as much as we don’t do something for likes or somebody to say well done to us we want to think that somebody will treat us well in return when we treat them well that as we serve someone that they might also serve us but here is jesus and he washes his disciples feats and with every action we see his generosity his one waving and his unconditional love on display as jesus washes their feet it wasn’t something that he does begrudgingly it wasn’t something he did because he had to it’s something that he chooses to do is something he chooses to do when actually he could have legitimately requested that somebody had washed his feet if i was in a room with jesus and jesus said will you wash my feet i would have been of course you are the master you are the lords of course i will wash your feet i think i would i’ve almost got that’s a legitimate request of his that i would wash his feet yet jesus doesn’t make that request of the disciples he chooses to get up to fill a basin with water to wrap a towel around his waist and to begin one by one to wash the disciples feets the purpose wasn’t to make them feel bad at the fact that they hadn’t washed his neither was it for their praise or for their approval he didn’t serve to get something he served to demonstrate something to demonstrate his love it wasn’t for likes for notoriety for publicity he was demonstrating his love for them and teaching them what it looks like to love one another and to serve one another what it looks like to take on the role of a servant and to serve others he showed us how to serve how to serve humbly without hype he presumed the position of his servants without going hey look what i’m about to do check me out everybody are you all making notes are you all seeing me now i will serve he gets up from the table and he simply begins to fill a basin with water he doesn’t announce what he’s about to do he just humbly serves he shows us how to serve humbly he shows us how to serve generously i think that actually everybody in the room would have got the message if he had just washed one person’s feet and then sat back down and gone now you serve one another but he didn’t he went and he washed each of their feet because we read when he comes to peter peter then has this dialogue with jesus throwing hang on a minute i’m uncomfortable with this hang on a minute are you really gonna wash my feet you my master my lords what he’s done for one he does for all it in some ways makes me go wow just think that as he went around the room he’d have washed judas’s feet the man who a short time later was about to betray him he didn’t do it half-heartedly he’d put the towel around his waist he’d wash their feet and then he dried them he could have washed their feet and then left them to air dry but he didn’t do it half-heartedly he did it wholeheartedly he washed their feet he dried their feets jesus shows us how to serve humbly he shows us how to serve generously he shows us how to serve compassionately he didn’t make a fuss about the condition of their feet i don’t know about you but maybe if it was me washing the feet i’d have been going oh this is disgusting this is gross let me hold my nose you know there would have been a point where you maybe if it was the first time you’d ever done it you’d have made a bit of a fuss but jesus didn’t make a fuss he caringly compassionately just serves them shows us how to serve humbly generously and compassionately he showed his disciples an example he shows us an example and he says that actually now you go and wash one another’s feet you go serve one another service and serving one another isn’t something we say it’s something we do when he had finished washing their feets and put on his clothes and returned to his place do you understand what i’ve done for you he asked them you call me teacher and lord and rightly so for that is who i am now that i your lord and teacher have washed your feet you also should wash one another’s feet i’ve set you this example that you should know that sorry that you should do as i have done for you very truly i tell you no servant is greater than his master nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him now that you know these things you will be blessed if you do them i’ve set an example that you should do as i have done for you he sets us this example of what it is to serve to serve humbly to serve generously to serve compassionately in jesus’s example our hearts are stretched to what it looks like to love more completely more fully more unwaveringly to loving others means that we are called to serve others to care for their need without expecting anything in return and at times knowing that as we step out and serve others they may disappoint us along the way and we may be hurt by their actions upon the way but yet we don’t decide whether to serve them based on what others may or may not do to us or how they may or may not act towards us we choose to serve others because it’s the example that jesus has given us an example that he has given us to follow and i don’t know about you but the more i think about that the more that stretches me because serving isn’t just serving others when it’s comfortable for me to do serving my family isn’t just serving them when they do the things that i like them to do when they live in a way and when they act in a way that i like them to serving within church isn’t just to those who like me but it is to all and serve in our community and beyond this place at times we will meet sometimes we will be disappointed and we will be hurt by the response of others as we serve but yet we are called to be those who serve as part of church as part of us being together we serve one another and we serve together each of us need to be asking those questions what does it look like for me to love and to serve others in a way that demonstrates a generous heart that generous heart of love that god has for those around about me one peter ver chapter four and verse 10 says each of you should use whatever gift that you have to serve others as faithful stewards of god’s grace in all its various forms galatians 5 13 says you my brothers and sisters were called to be free do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh rather serve one another humbly in love and ephesians 6 7 says serve wholeheartedly as if you were serving the lord not people we are to serve one another so this morning i leave you with those questions for you to contemplate how is it that you will serve one another within your home how is it all you will serve one another as part of church community how will it be that you serve others as part of being church and how is it that we will serve together that’s a question that we’re asking as church isn’t it it’s been a question that we will we are going to be asking ourselves over the next coming weeks as we hit the autumn time how is it that together we serve the community that god has placed us in so we say let’s just take a moment to bow our heads so come before god say god would you use us would you teach us what it is to love like you love would you help us to be those who serve humbly generously and compassionately would you help us to serve one another help us lord in those moments where we serve others and we find ourselves feeling disappointed and hurt bring healing in those areas of our lives god for anybody this morning that has stepped out and served you but yet has felt the pain of being rejected of being disappointed of being hurt by those that they’ve chosen to serve god i just pray that you bring healing into their lives this morning help them to bring it to you and god would you help us to serve would we serve you with all that we have we thank you for the example that you’ve given us help us to follow your example we pray amen and our final song this morning says these words we choose to serve you we choose to follow where you lead to be your witness to be your hands and your feet let’s stand together and sing we choose [Music] we say yes [Music] my soul says yes whatever you have for me [Music] we can trust in you for you are with us you are always good we say yes [Music] let’s eat every season in every season we can trust in you for you are with us you are always [Music] whatever lies [Music] my soul says yes you [Music] are for us not against us not against us we know that you are for us not against us not against we know that you are for us not against us not against us [Music] yes my soul says yes whatever you have for me whatever lies [Music] says yes whatever you have for me whatever [Music] [Music] hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Music] yes lord we say yes to you god this week would we listen to the leading of your spirit would we follow your guidance and would we serve you and others would be practical in the way that we love and we serve those we come in
