True Beauty and Goodness Come from Within || Reflection on Matthew 23:27-32

[Music] good morning [Music] welcome to the morning coffee with other jelly our text for today is from the gospel of matthew chapter 23 verses 27 to 32. it says what do you teachers of the law and pharisees you hypocrites you are like white washed tombs which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of bones of the dead and everything unclean in the same way on the outside you appeal to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness what are you teachers of the law and pharisees you hypocrites you build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous and you say if we had lived in the days of our ancestors we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets so you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets go ahead then and complete what your ansi stores started thus far is the reading for today’s gospel reflection true beauty and goodness come from within what is it for us what is god’s message for us through this gospel today again jesus continues his tirade against the teachers of the law and the pharisees actually their zeal for the law of the lord is burning and very strong they are not actually bad people or bad leaders all they want is for all israel to worship god the way he is meant to be worshiped sadly their seal blinded them to what is more important it hardened their religious sensibilities and so they focus on the external following of the law rather than its spirit which is based on love and compassion and so it becomes oppressive and anti-people only the rich and the privileged view of which the teachers of the law and the pharisees belong can follow it to the letter and in time they create few legislations that it is past impossible for ordinary people to follow most especially the last the least and the lost in time this creates some kind of spiritual elites who are out of touch of the plight of the ordinary people they are supposed to make god closer to people but what they did is to make god so remote that only they can have access to god jesus directly calls the teachers of the law and the parishes hypocrites just like yesterday he compares them to white washed tombs which look beautiful on the outside but deep within the tombs are nothing but bones and filth place yourself in the pharisee’s shoes how would you react if someone accused you of the death of hypocrisy that jesus was accusing the pharisees of the pharisees appeared to be righteous however jesus accuses them of being filled with hypocrisy and even how dare he who did he think he was to make such a critical and public remarks on the parishes after all they were the leaders in the temple they were doing good and not even the sad reality is one way or another all of us we have our own furry cycle fairy cycle attitude i assume that most of us strive to look good naturally we desire to be esteemed to be respected and to be appreciated we want to be competent successful and happy in what we are doing and this is natural and normal however we also may try to hide the vulnerable and fearful aspects of ourselves we may try to hide what we consider our bones and felt don’t want people to see this side of ourselves we want to look happy or appear happy successful fulfilled and satisfied our challenge outward appearances can be deceptive isaiah prophesies that the messiah would not judge by what his eyes can see or what his ears can hear but with righteousness he shall judge the poor and decide with equity for the make of the earth that’s from the book of isaiah chapter 11 verses 3 to 4. the heart reveals the true intentions and attitudes that form the way we think of others then jesus used strong language to warn the religious leaders and the teachers about the vanity of outward appearance and pretense wearing a mask that hides the true intentions and thoughts of the heart just like the tombs in palestine jesus equates true beauty and goodness with a clean heart and mind that is set on god and his way of love and goodness and sin with corrupt mind and heart that is set on doing what is wrong and evil jesus issued a stern warning to the scribes and the pharisees not to condemn them but to call them to examine their hearts in the light of god’s truth and holiness jesus called them hypocrites because their hearts were set on pleasing themselves rather than pleasing god jesus warns that what truly corrupts a person is an external ritual impunity but the impurity of wrong and sinful attitudes that come from within a person’s mind and hearts such as pride greed sloth envy hatred glottally and lusts jesus chastise the religious leaders for being double minded and for demanding from others standards which they refuse to satisfy they professed admiration for the prophets who spoke god’s word by building tombs in their honor but their outward show of respect did not match their inward refusal to heed the prophet’s warning to turn away from sinful attitudes and from neglecting to lead their people in god’s ways jesus realizes that we are also hypocrites at times and he knows that we want to look good and to be successful these are natural desires and hopes however periodically we may need to ask ourselves am i being hypocritical or am i pretending myself to be good and holy when at times i am acting like a hypocrite jesus does not expect us to be perfect underlying that however he desires that we be who we are and not pretend to be holier happier and more satisfied than in reality we are let us pray lord jesus incline my heart to your wisdom and teach me your ways fill me with your holy spirit that i may love your ways and obey your word we ask this in the name of jesus our lord amen okay so don’t forget to finish your coffee and again magadan buhay good morning god bless us all see you tomorrow [Music] you
