Warhammer Plus First Episode Is A CATASTROPHE! Hammer & Bolter

why hello there everybody welcome to this review for the hammer and bolter episode that has been given to us for free on the warhammer 40k community page now this is going to be for warhammer plus and it’s supposed to be a free episode to entice us into getting into their subscription service which is going to show more animations and episodes now this first episode basically deals with kamasariaric his background and how he interacts with gazgul thraka now before we kick off this review and i really start digging into it this is what i want to tell you my goal is to be fair with this review i do not support warhammer plus and i don’t like what games workshop has been doing however if an artist is going to put his heart and soul into something and create something that is really nice you have to give credit where credit is due so my goal isn’t just to be negative about this my goal is to see what could have been done better or what did they actually do that was good so let’s go ahead and jump off into this so this episode starts off with two orc teenage boys presumably that are trying to eat a grot and the grot’s boss shows up to save the day and then he begins to lecture the orcs to which these orcs essentially attack the boss the boss beats him up just very briefly and then he sits down and says this is not very good now i need to tell you a story about commissary ark because i want you future generation of orcs to grow up big and strong now i’m gonna stop this right here and say that my first critique is this number one it seems like the author doesn’t really know orcs overall when it comes to their lore and instead it’s really trying to humanize the orcs so that way we can have some level of relatability to them in hopes that we will laugh at the jokes later on which are also very bad i believe that the orcs that were portrayed throughout the dawn of war series were done a lot more justice where the orcs do have a comedic sense some of the things that they do and say they are funny but it’s not wrapped in this shell of hey they’re just like us humans too and look it they actually care for one another it just gets really cringy at that point so he sits these two teenage orc boys down and he starts telling him about kamisar yarick and how every orc needs a good enemy to fight now once the orc starts talking about kamasariarik it starts turning into like a comedic show where they’re trying to show him in this over the top anime badass look at how cool he is look at how powerful he is and you could tell that there’s really trying to make the scene funny now i think from the very get-go because of the turn off of the way they’re trying to make these orcs very humanized it has a domino effect of everything that starts to come after this has a negative overtone because it’s like they’ve already missed the very beginning of what orcs are supposed to be and then it begins to turn into this over the top really cheesy okay everybody stop the music it’s time to laugh now level of comedy and i think it’s a reflection of the very poor writing that went into this if anything else i think if they would have had a more witty more intellectual comedy do you guys remember the early episodes of spitting image i think that level of comedy shows a level of writing and competence that is more enjoyable rather than this stop the music okay everybody start laughing now when you’re being told to laugh the joke becomes a lot less enjoyable however when you can get witty enough and then farm for those laughs it’s a lot better this level of comedy is in my opinion i know it’s subjective it’s really bad and it actually throws the episode off entirely now i do want to talk about kamasar yarik now when they introduce his character and they show him it is cool to finally see yarick on screen and i understand that we can all agree that kamasaryarik he is a badass he’s always been one of like the epic commissars in the warhammer 40k universe it’s cool that he’s got an orc arm it’s cool that he’s able to be like one of these rivals to gas goal and stuff it’s just a really cool character however this is like 20 minutes of the orcs basically jerking off kamisar yarick always saying you know he’s the biggest the baddest strongest you know he’s he’s a great enemy he’s this he’s that and it’s like okay i think this is beginning to violate one of those rules of writing where don’t tell me that he’s a badass show me that he is a badass and this falls flat on its face because the animation is so bad and that when it comes to the fighting scenes there’s like three fighting scenes with kamasaryarik they’re so poorly done that they can’t actually show that kamasariarik is a badass the story is told in a way where it’s like when he jumps into the fight the the action scenes they almost look like a picture slideshow there’s no fluid animation where he’s moving around with his chain sword and blocking attacks and counter-attacking it’s literally like a picture slideshow where it’s like the orc does one attack oh no it actually cut jaric and then it goes to another scene where yarick shoots back and then it goes to the other scene where the orc then does his attack it’s literally like a picture slideshow you do your attack now i do my attack there’s no real interaction between the two characters and so it falls flat on its face when it’s trying to show that yark is like this badass all it does is just say that he is one hey look he killed an orc and thus he’s a badass now because a lot of you guys can’t handle constructive criticism i’m gonna throw some positives in here to make your day a little happy so that way you’re capable of understanding what i’m trying to say here and you just don’t think i’m being a negative [ __ ] so number one there are a couple of scenes in here where i think they’re really cool but again there’s also a negative attached to it there’s a scene in here where yarick is standing in front of two orc gargans and it looks really cool though artwork that they used for it if they would have kept this level of artwork throughout the whole series and really animated it it would have been phenomenal i actually there’s no way that i’d be able to say like this is really bad but they’re basically just still images that just sit there and yarik is standing in front of them and it looks cool for like a screenshot but nothing really happens the gargants aren’t moving they’re not shooting they’re not attacking and people are dodging or it’s nothing it’s just a still image and yes it looks cool but it doesn’t work when you’re trying to put it into an animation and impress us with it so as a positive there are a couple of scenes in here where they’re just still images that have been drawn that do make really cool looking scenes but they’re the animations themselves once you actually get into it and the characters start moving none of that is part of it anymore it basically just disappears it turns into the next scene all that beautiful artwork is now gone and now you’ve got these choppy characters that are moving around with very clunky animations now another positive that i want to throw out here is of course they’ve done really good with the orc voices and i think the voice acting overall is not bad at all it’s just a matter of the characters themselves the way they’ve been animated and the way that the story is being told does a disservice more likely to the art team that draws these great backgrounds and to the voice actors themselves because the voice actors do a good job but it’s just the story and it’s the animation that just it just destroys everything else now the music in this animation is a little bit of a hit and miss some of it sounds pretty cool some of it sounds pretty cheesy that’s gonna be more subjective it definitely has a bit more of like an 80s maybe like 90s vibe to it which is definitely not bad and some of it does sound pretty good like i said and some of the scenes i’m like okay i like the music it sounds pretty decent in other scenes i’m just like i think it’s a bit of a miss but again it’s gonna be more subjective you’re gonna have to watch that for yourself now i’m gonna end it with this just as an overview for the whole thing uh hammer and boulder really seems like it doesn’t know which direction it wants to go in it is very confused is the best way that i can describe it i am going to toot my horn and unapologetically say once again i was right that warhammer plus is gonna show you a lot of different animations and stories but it’s going to do it in the cheapest manner possible it doesn’t feel like this is a studio that is dedicated towards giving you the highest quality and greatest stories it seems like it is a studio that’s trying to crank out as much as it possibly can as fast as it possibly can and as cheaply as possibly can and so because of this the overall story and animation and experience is really watered down to compared to what they could have been so in my opinion if they would have made this episode instead of 20 minutes long they made it like eight minutes long and just put in a really good fight scene between yarick and gasgul that would have been a lot better than having grandpa orc sit down with two rowdy teenagers and giving them a story which i think really does a disservice to the orcs and it’s a level of comedy that doesn’t fit the orcs now even on their own website once again because warhammer plus loves to toot its own horn and tell you how great and how perfect all the stuff that they do is they try to display this as being very grim dark pooling no punches and that this episode or this series is definitely not for the faint of heart i have to tell you that that is a flat out joke omni man far more brutal far more violent than anything in this show attack on titan far more grim dark far more brutal than anything in this show even the anime hunter x hunter has so many more bloody more brutal scenes in that anime than anything i’ve seen in this show the violence and the grim dark and the war in this show is so incredibly tame that i was just like okay it felt like it was actually like a pg-13 type film i actually think it’s rated 15 plus so that should tell you just how gritty and grim dark it really is they try to do like a grim dark tone in some of the scenes and in some ways it doesn’t necessarily look bad but given all the other things that you’ve already seen with like the poor chalky animation everything seems chunky and slow and awkward and weird the comedy is very flat it’s very stop the music hey it’s time to laugh now and again once i said before if somebody is telling you that you need to laugh at a joke it makes it completely unfunny and that’s the type of comedy that you’re gonna see in these types of shows i really wish i could show you these scenes but if i can be completely honest with you guys the way that games workshop is protecting their warhammer plus i would not be surprised if i give you screenshots make a video and show you exactly what happens that it would be struck down so i’m gonna be on the safe side on this one and just tell you the story and let you go view the episode for yourself in the next 24 hours before they take it down another thing to look out for the animations again they get super lazy there is a scene in here where and and keep an eye out for this it’s when the space marines come down in the drop pods the space wings look really bad it’s a really bad 3d look it looks like a fan animated 3d film that was made back in like 2012 or something it’s really bad looking but more importantly look for the dreadnought and the back of the scene it lands and it comes out of that drop pod essentially and there’s a whole horde of orcs all the space marines in front of it are shooting and moving forward that dreadnought was never animated it doesn’t take a single step forward it doesn’t shoot at anything it doesn’t turn it doesn’t do nothing it is a frozen dreadnought in the background that just stands there doing absolutely nothing i actually think that they forgot to animate it or something it just doesn’t make sense why it comes down in a drop pod and it just freezes and stands there doesn’t move doesn’t shoot doesn’t do nothing it’s little details like that that i pick up on i look at i’m going what is going on here what dreadnought comes down in a drop pod like that and it’s just staring at the orcs going oh well i guess i’m just gonna stand here and do nothing anyways it’s just little things like that that shows the quality and attention to detail that they don’t care about in these animations and this is also why i say this seems like evidence that they’re just trying to crank these episodes out and go here here’s an episode it’s amazing you know suck it off it’s the greatest thing that you’ve ever seen before now let’s go on to the next episode and don’t forget to subscribe for a whole year so that way you can get your free model so just again as to reiterate this whole thing hammer and bolter and i think a lot of these warhammer plus shows don’t know which direction that they want to go and one section they want to claim grimdark on the other section they have really bad writing and comedy and it’s like saying which are you trying to do here are you trying to make a serious show where we actually can relate or enjoy these characters because there’s really no character development throughout this whole thing except for maybe yark a little bit but even then it’s being told from the standpoint of an orc it doesn’t really tell it to you from the standpoint of yarick himself and so there’s really not much of a relatability to yark because you’re seeing him from such a distance you don’t really connect with him not to mention all they ever do is just tell you that he’s such a badass and that this is the character that you’re supposed to like and this is a character that you’re supposed to respect now do it instead of building a story around him where you can appreciate the character even more if there was any of a good reason not to subscribe to warhammer plus i think they did a phenomenal job here because i honestly don’t want to see anything else after this i’m not intrigued about it and here’s the thing this episode is about commissary yaric and gazgul and they never fight in it if they seriously would have cut this down in half and put all of their budget into building a story between yarick and gasgul and then showing an epic clash between the two this would have been a thousand times better but it never happens okay guys that’s gonna be my basic review of this go watch it for yourself and see what you feel about your own reviews on it i’m gonna say this i don’t support warhammer plus and this is just this further reinforces why i was never gonna subscribe to it to begin with because it is a company that doesn’t care about its intellectual property anymore instead it’s just gonna slap [ __ ] in front of your face and tell you like it and eat it [ __ ] and all the soy boys out there are gonna look at it with their soy mouths open going it’s amazing i love it it’s so good it’s reminiscent of the old 80s cartoons
