Why is Turkey so interested in Afghanistan? | Real Turkey

welcome to real turkey channel this is your usual presenter atelier schilara today we’re going to talk about afghanistan and the taliban victory of course that’s a very broad subject and as you know as the channel’s name implies this is real turkey channel so i’m gonna try to answer the question of why is turkey so interested in afghanistan and i’m gonna give you as little background as possible about afghanistan a very tortured country which hasn’t which hasn’t really found peace over the last 102 years moderate my question why are why why is why is erdogan so interesting taliba in afghanistan let’s look at a map as you see turkey and afghanistan are separated by iran which geographically speaking is almost twice the land size of turkey and it’s as you see a pretty wide country so there is really no uh physical contact between afghanistan and turkey there is almost no trade historical ties haven’t existed despite claims by akp there has been one incidence where the afghan muslim community has collected money and gold and send it to mustafa kemal ataturk turkey’s founding father and the victorious commander of the turkey’s war of independence so where forever you know forever indebted of counties in that sense but above and beyond there is really not much that would compel turkish policymakers to spend such a huge amount of energy on afghanistan and as the cover implies there is really a huge amount of energy that’s been spent on afghanistan um turkey has been part of the afghanistan nato missions which have lasted for 20 years i believe and in fact a very respected turkish politician mr hickman chatting former minister of foreign affairs served for a while as the high representative of u.n to afghanistan turkey recently wanted to take control of the kabul airport well simply because it’s the only international outlet for anyone to get in and get out once again let me show you the geography of afghanistan really to the to the north of the map you see the central asian nations below afghanistan as pakistan and then india and china but afghanistan is also very mountainous and underdeveloped geography means that land routes are simply not possible even though taliban openly rejected erdogan’s offer to prolong the mission at the kabul airport and send in turkey soldiers erdogan still insists on uh negotiating with uh negotiating with taliban to get that mission which is sort of turkey’s hook to afghanistan this is uh from amnesty international i believe i’m really sorry i forgot to link it but erdogan also sprouts out very interesting reasons for turkey’s military presence in afghanistan turkey’s military presence in afghanistan will strengthen the new administration’s hand in the international arena said mr erdogan which i suppose means taliban’s hand in the international arena other excuses are of course well you know hey they’re muslims we’re muslims so why not and while a lot of afghan refugees are coming to turkey so if we have close contact with taliban and if we can have any influence on them perhaps we can change the way taliban governs afghanistan so that so many millions of people will not flee the country of course none of this makes sense and that’s what i’m going to tell you uh in the next slide actually mr erdogan’s stubborn insistence on playing a role in the fate of afghanistan is largely self-motivated driven by political islam and very very confused thinking arogan’s primary purpose is to become the sole interlocutor between taliban and western states to make money for instance eu may grant turkey more financial aid for doing their dirty work but the most important reason is to avert more u.s sanctions to recall and you will see my videos below i have done a lot of videos on two american relationship and in particular the s 400 problem turkey is currently under very light kata sanctions imposed by the outgoing mr president trump because we have purchased and installed russian-made s-400 anti-missile batteries these have never been used and there is really no prospect of them being used in the near or far future so if mr erdogan wishes to avert more katsa sanctions all he has to do is turn over the control of s 400 batteries to nato or to a third independent country such as sweden and the problem will go away there is no reason to take additional risks in afghanistan when there is a much simpler solution to our conflicts with the united states of course as i’ve said the real reasons as always i am sorry this is the wrong one are as always concealed first uh stardogan thinks of himself as the leader of the sunni muslim world strangely enough he is the only one to think that obviously asian muslim countries like malaysia india a minority pakistan and indonesia have different muslim traditions though they have all good ties with turkey and none of them is interested to be governed or to be influenced by caliphate established in turkey arab states hate the notion and they are the ones they count i’m talking about the sunni quartet iraq syria and the north african muslim states simply because uh they fear that mr erdogan has a very pernicious influence on their populations mr erdogan is considered an islamist revolutionary in the arab world and the more he advances his you know undeclared claim to be the leader of the sunni muslim world the more scared arab states get and in fact turkey has also backed erdogan’s dreams by helping in the libyan war uh by in the azeri armenian conflict and reaching out to as far as somalia and ethiopia which obviously is the uh hinterland of uh egypt so all of these nations have a reason to suspect mr erdogan’s interest in becoming the sunni muslim world and in increasing turkey’s footprint in muslim slash arab countries now mind you this pretention to be the leader of the sunni muslim world would make sense if it would bring any trade or investment but it doesn’t simply because turkey has again conflicts created solely by erdogan with all of these arab states for instance with egypt which is the de facto leader or military leader of the arab sunni alliance we don’t recognize president sisi because he’s a dictator while he is but taliban is no better we’re also involved in libya where egypt has a stake we’re annoying uh united arab emirates and the gulf council in saudi arabia of course simply because we are one of the primary supporters of muslim brotherhood which in my view is not a terrorist organization but it’s a revolutionary organization that wants to establish uh pro sharia governments in muslim countries and that’s sort of anathema to arab dictatorships once again i’m not saying muslim brotherhood is evil or uh the kingdoms and princetons of uh the gulf countries are any better for their nation but hey these kings and emirs are in power and to the extent they see turkey uh reaching out to their subjects through muslim brotherhood uh they provide they you know they cut off trade there is little investment of any kind an international arena sunni arab nations have become our competitors or our adversaries i mean one can say well there is no harm in becoming the interlocutor between taliban and and western states fine but there is a downside for one thing the relationship with taliban has awakened pro-sharia healing and aspirations in turkey according to many polls no more than 15 to 20 percent of turkey citizens wish a sharia state nevertheless uh some of the elements in that camp most of whom vote for akp have actively packed taliban and they want to impose a taliban style life in turkey and i will tell you in a second what that means turkey’s cozy relationship with taliban is not going to change taliban taliwan is a medieval violent brutal religious entity it has nothing to do with turkish interpretation of muslim which is anatolian sufi tradition and extremely moderate and more spiritual and those refugees kicked out or forced out from afghanistan are fleeing into turkey we already have roughly 300 000 that’s the official count of undocumented african refugees according to uh professors uh who teach in the northeast states of turkey claim there’s another million and a half and they are just waiting across the border to turkey it is not clear who the bureaucracy the military the border guard what the taliban policy is on one hand we don’t want afghan refugees and the institutions i just mentioned are tasked to stop them on the other hand you have a president who keeps saying justice you know who keeps saying taliban is our core religionists we find their views moderate we’re interested in developing a deeper relationship that’s the kind of confusion that prevails turkey’s uh security establishment they really don’t know whether they should push out the afghans or let them in there’s a much bigger threat here not only for turkey but uh for iraq syria northern africa uh in other words in other sunni in other muslim nations where isis or al-qaeda-like fundamentals terrorist organizations are active thanks to uh the war in syria uh and uh more security measures by the arab and north african states both taliban i’m sorry both al qaeda and isis have been defeated but they have not died off and uh past the experience shows us that wherever in the world a muslim fundamentalist terror organization rise to the headlines sort of rekindles or awakens this terrorist instinct in other parts of the world and this is the biggest threat i mean these terror incidents happened before i started the english youtube channel but turkey has suffered tremendous amount of casualty social trauma and economic damage from ics and related organizations attacks on turkish targets so turkey has modified reasons to have an arms-length relationship with taliban or put it in the perspective of you know finance or or mathematics choice theory the upside from being close to taliban is simply not worth the risks that we’re incurring by doing so i want to show you two articles uh to explain taliban brutality and how being painted as too close to taliban may paint the turkey with the same brush despite signals of moderation and respecting equal rights and in particular women’s rights that’s not the case the headline reads afghanistan taliban responsible for brutal massacre of hazaraman hazara to the best i can understand are actually a shia minority probably ethnically related to the nations in iran and they’ve been persecuted by sunni of course that’s that’s a tremendous crime and just you know google taliban slash or you know comma brutality and and you will see pictures and read horrendous articles that are really medieval i mean so much pain have not been inflicted by humans and other humans since those dark ages and more importantly those who would suffer the most under the taliban rule are the afghan women again this is from amnesty international which i consider to be impartial and very useful human rights organization women have been forced to stay home have been denied educational opportunities work opportunities uh and forced marriages or taliban leaders or other influential males in the country taking women as concubines is almost a tradition now that also has a turkish angle turkish women strenuously object to any kind of relationship alibaba as uh you know other females in the united states and western countries simply because taliban is a misogynistic entity what it claims to be doing under the sharia law is just you know it doesn’t exist i mean this is purely a hatred of women even in saudi arabia women are not treated that bad bad and in many muslim countries including egypt turkey malaysia indonesia and a large extent algeria and tunisia nowadays women are at least on paper equal to man and their participation in social life and workplace is increasing this is the direction turkey should be going but the association with taliban and consistently trying to cover up erdogan’s taliban’s claims uh by erdogan’s cover is simply not playing well with the turkish women so where are we going from here well it’s very simple first of all we need to understand even though taliban unlike al qaeda is a muslim nationalist entity it has no interest in global jihad its interest in pakistan and some of the central asian muslim countries where there are pashtuns which taliban is actually from the peshtun ethnic group which are affiliated ideologically with taliban and beyond taliban doesn’t really care for the rest of the world but taliban also doesn’t mind if the likes of al qaeda establish a presence in afghanistan as long as they pay tribute so now terrorists have received being granted a new base which is very difficult to penetrate to reorganize and spread this supposedly quote unquote islamist terror to the rest of the world and that threatens to bring about the clash of civilization between muslim and non-muslim countries even though 95 percent of muslims do not agree with taliban would not condone its methods and do not even share the same view of quran i mean you know christians don’t understand that buddhists or hindus don’t understand that i mean we do the same thing for other nations for most turks united states is a country where blacks are shut uh without uh due process there is no justice etc etc of course these are all uh very crude paintings or sketchings of a foreign nation but islamophobia is real and stoked by terror incidents so if taliban stays in afghanistan long enough and helps flourish other islamist terror organizations i am afraid in addition to climate change a pandemic the intense competition with between us and china will also have a problem with muslim and non-muslim nations for secondly region as i’ve said the victory of taliban poses the threat of sunni sunni fundamentalist terror organizations being reactivated and in the chaotic geography and politics of middle east and north africa this is the last thing we really want taliban in as much as they claim to be moderate as i’ve said are radicals uh they’re brutal they have no mercy so anyone who doesn’t share their views in afghanistan which i believe is 90 of the decent people of afghan people are going to flee the country pakistan doesn’t want them iran is very clever if an off-current refugee arrives in iran he or she is evil to give accommodation and a transit ticket to the turkish border so iran says let that become turkey’s problem and turkey according to the official count has not only 300 000 african refugees already but another 4 million syrians and probably a million of iraqis iranian dissidents and africans who came under tourist visas but are working and there has been a very ugly ugly incident on 13th of august where clashes between syrian and turkish youths in the borough of ankara called altinda led to rebellion and communal fighting which resulted in the plundering or or raiding of hundreds of syrian residents and shops it could have gotten uglier had the police not interfered immediately so instead of covering up for taliban the only valid reason to have any kind of relationship with taliban is try to moderate its behavior which as far as i’m concerned erdogan is not doing and finally of course award for the long-suffering afghan people in my humble view rejoice taliban will not last simply because united states has lost the war in afghanistan but nowadays it takes finance to rebuild the nation and over the last few weeks we have seen imf and world bank postpone or cancel their their loans the united states confiscating or freezing the funds affects us belonging to of county central bank so taliban has honestly no financial support none is coming from china and russia and finally it’s very important to understand that afghanistan is a strange nation it is actually an alliance of tribes and you know religious denominations and taliban represents only the pashtun not the turkmenis not the hazaras and any other nationalities and denominations that i may have forgotten and it could create a coalition if it were respectful for democracy rule of law women’s rights or or anything else that has any relation to what we call being a decent human but trying to control afghan afghanistan by the sheer threat of brutal punishment coercion and excessive use of force is not going to work already there are rebellions and there is uh i think he is turkic uh commander in a small uh district called the panshire valley uh he is the son of famous afghan war hero i believe han i believe and he’s organizing a rebellion against the taliban rule i don’t know if he’s going to be successful but clearly not all afghans like taliban and i don’t think taliban is going to be able to rule over afghanistan for a long time thank you very much i have been remiss in the frequency of our videos for a long time because of several minor health problems like uh you know ulcer uh we’re going to put up more videos this channel has very little viewership and it doesn’t bother me because i’m tremendously encouraged by the comments both critical and positive and i shall continue doing these broadcasts and hopefully extend and expand the team so that we have more coverage more visuals and more color thank you very much for watching real turkey channel this has been a presentation on the tukof kanye relationship by atila eschalaga stay healthy get vaccinated
