candyman isn’t it i saw him candyman isn’t real anthony you know you know what is real me anthony me this this is real you don’t understand okay i i will show you that okay candyman no candy don’t say his name don’t say his name y’all that was a clip from one of the year’s most anticipated films this is a sequel to the cultural the cult supernatural horror flick candyman and here to discuss it is the man in the middle of the action emmy award-winning actor known for his role in watchman and aquaman yahya abdul mateen ii my man if i know there’s a mirror where you are right now would you not look at a mirror right now if i and i asked and you would you say candyman five times in the mirror right now no i don’t have a good reason to do that i don’t think i don’t have a good reason to do that what is it what is it about this movie that cult classic that’s still we’re sitting here grown men and we still will not say candyman in a mirror five times how does a movie have that kind of impact i think it’s just really a testament honestly to tony todd’s performance in the in the original candy man the iconography of that film i think it’s something that left the it left the theaters and it went into the homes of of the community and had young kids and adults in the mirror in the dark saying candyman four to five times uh it just took on the life of its own outside of the theater really i think it’s a testament to uh you know to the direction in the first film into tony todd’s work you know um yes it’s a horror movie um but you also find a way in this movie and how important is it to you now to be able to talk about uh social issues that you were able to weave into the storyline yeah yeah for sure well you know one of the things about candyman is candyman has historically been been viewed as a villain in fact you know just a second ago we’re talking about the impression that candyman left on a lot of people most people only remember the villainous parts the murderous parts of candyman but they don’t remember how candyman became candyman you know setting the the story in the present allows us to revisit um candyman’s history we you know revisit a character named daniel roberto who was who was lynched you know and created out of this act of violence um and it allows us to to look at today’s society and tell the stories of unwilling martyrs you know young african-american men who were killed before their time and unwillingly you know uh remembered um or or or unwillingly uh turned into uh monsters you know really and uh that’s that’s sort of one of the things that we’re putting under the lens in our film and before i’ll let you go here man look you’ve got aquaman you got aquaman two coming out uh you won the the emmy uh we talked about watchmen there you’re in matrix four you have this movie coming out you’ve been named one of the new a-listers uh in hollywood but and i hope you don’t mind me saying some people know your story you have a degree in architecture and you were a city planner out in the bay area you lost your job and that is what kind of spurred you to get on this journey and i wonder if you do have a message man for other folks out there who have lost it could have been the worst time in your life and now here you are as an a-lister in hollywood now yeah man i think one i just always take the time to you know acknowledge god because i’m definitely blessed on my journey um but if i had a message it would be life is long you know so give yourself a chance to to you know to live a full life and uh change with the changes you know one of my teachers in drama school he says that champions adjust and i know that a lot of people right now are being faced with a lot of trying times but uh if we look at it as an opportunity to adjust into something new you know to lean into our discomfort a little bit more then you know a lot of times that can uh that can shift into something that we had no idea you know was out there it was the case for me it’s the case for uh hundreds of other people around the world you know if anybody’s watching it could definitely be the case for you too so uh keep on going that’s what i would say congratulations to you on everything really it’s been great watching you and your career fan of yours fan of this movie and we’re going to see you down the road hopefully in studio all right yes sir i appreciate i look forward to it all right and candyman folks hits theaters this friday well hey there gma fans robin roberts here thanks for checking out our youtube channel lots of great stuff here so go on click the subscribe button right over right over here to get more of awesome videos and content from gma every day anytime we thank you for watching and we’ll see you in the morning on gma
