Your News From Israel- August 23, 2021

the israeli defense forces now thoroughly investigating the violent clashes seen over the weekend along the israel gaza border classes clashes which allowed an israeli soldier to be shot in the head at point-blank range and the findings so far as expected not very encouraging the start of the weekly cabinet meeting on sunday but initial idf investigations are placing shmueli’s shooting at the idf’s feet the military probe into the massive palestinian riots along the northern gaza border last saturday stating that israeli troops were severely underprepared and blinded at times to the danger and the idf already suggesting a few explanations first soldiers were reportedly surprised by the size of the crowds having expected fewer people then when the huge crowds began to rush the border the idf refrained from immediately opening fire for fear of hitting civilians nearby and finally once the crowds got close enough strong defenses became liabilities i.e the small sniper hole transformed from a good defense into a funnel for enemy fire which soldiers could not see coming soldiers like 21 year old staff sergeant barela darya shmueli who was left in critical condition with a bullet wound to the head in any case bennett vowing that hamas will pay a heavy price though proper retaliation as bennett defines it may take time as negotiations with hamas are ongoing instead then other pressures are mounting egypt for one announcing the full closure of the border crossing with gaza starting monday and lasting until further notice hamas for its part however alleging that the shooting was a quote independent unplanned action by a single individual who decided to respond to the sniper end quote likewise the idea of confirming that hamas’s supposed restraining forces were present on the border but analysts expect that this narrative is purely for relieving some of the pressures placed on hamas by egypt in fact some hebrew media citing unspecified sources saying that the gunman was himself a member of the hamas restraining force and arab media monitor abu ali express reporting that armed factions in the strip are already planning to renew clashes along the southern gaza border near khan yunis wednesday afternoon joining me with more on the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas and gaza isle tv reporter asaf nisan assaf thanks so much for being with us now starting with the southern border egypt has indefinitely closed the rafah border crossing into gaza in both directions but israel is still allowing an essentially free flow of goods through the kerem shalom crossing so what effect does egypt’s closure really have and why not coordinate the closures more closely with egypt first of all iron good afternoon always good to be here starting with the fact that egypt itself is a much more has much more strength to decide on its own policy that’s how we’re seeing the egyptian closures happening by themselves by israeli standards we’re pretty much affected by everyone else in the world including the u.n egypt itself the middle east gaza hamas everyone itself has been much more pressurizing on israel than the than the egyptian the egyptians themselves of course had a few power changes he regime changes ever since all the way to president abdel fattah sisi but those who are still reporting the same policy of supporting israel by stopping hamas by stopping their supply by stopping their strength the fact that come out that hamas is trying through the through the crossing to this to arm itself but the egyptians are prior prairie pretty much stopping it we’re seeing that it’s a much more prominent display of power compared to israel of course all right now in addition to the ongoing negotiation between israel and hamas another supposed reason has been raised by alleged hamas sources for why israel is avoiding another heavy conflict for or retaliation especially after uh after the shooting over the weekend and that is that the islamist ram party under mansour abbas may pull out may pull out of and topple the bennet lapid government if the government wants to start another war the sources from hamas are saying that both hamas and ram have connections to qatar and therefore share aligned interests but this has been a common fear for years that an arab party would stymie national defense interests in israel so how do you respond to these allegations you know do you think there’s any any truth to it or is this just more of the rumor mill uh and and what islam’s connection to qatar so first of all there’s there’s a justified fear obviously due to the fact that we are talking about an error parting in the coalition that there was a timing that would stop me any progress by the israeli government this is something that was first seen pretty much by the netanyahu government and all the right-wing governments that didn’t want any arab mks or arab parties in the coalition exactly for that reason now again saying 100 dollars time it you cannot promise anything because the end of the day ram does want to take care of its own people now despite it all they wouldn’t want to break the government on their own on the security issue of their own citizens so there is a question whether or not ram will exactly stop if israel go again to the south against hamas and the epi jay of course the other connection of course is the second command number two in ram list that he is actually connected to to qatar itself specifically to former leader and a runaway terrorist azim shadows currently sitting in qatar they’re joined their joint progress enjoying process together has been long and of course this has been a fear of the israeli government and the fact that we’re talking about someone who is pro-hamas or a palestinian conflict but we are still seeing the end of the day when suamaz is leading the party so it is yet to be known how old will affect exactly again the connection is pretty clear due to the fact that we have number two on ram list is in good terms and cut out but then again we’re not sure 100 percent whether or not this connection is as powerful and is prominent as it would be seen wouldn’t such connections uh you know as you said the the iran party number two to qatar wouldn’t such connections have been investigated and vetted fairly extensively before ram’s entrance into the cabinet or or is that not something that the knesset really does i’m not sure that knesset really does that aaron but i could say to the fact that that has been known ever since someone has gone up and written to find a position we all know that there’s a lot of pressure and a lot of nervousness even before the coalition was formed with an arab party and mazinganim’s connection was well established and well known so this is hardly a surprise i wouldn’t say i wouldn’t think this would go too far as to examine it and investigate entire issue because the end of the day he’s not fighting against israel on that part he’s going to qatar and qatar currently is the one who is also paying the money to gaza not necessarily for turbo we see it’s going to the citizens so i wouldn’t call it exactly a investigation reason for it the connection to kata is well it’s another connection you still you still can show it as a prominent display of care of support for care all right stephanie town thank you so much thank you so much now in other news after years of disagreement and stagnation the cabinet approving a plan to lower the age for exemptions from idf service the new age of exemption for young men in the ultra-orthodox community now set to 21 as opposed to 24. but will this plan solve the myriad issues with respect to kharadim in both the israeli army and workforce with us to discuss is former yeshite knesset member and rabbi dove lipman dove litman thank you so much for being with us now first off i want to wish you congratulations on welcoming a new a new baby boy into the family but putting that aside i know you support these changes to to the military in theory but functionally speaking what does reducing the age of exemptions do of all thank you so much for the congratulations my wife and i become grandparents uh for the first time of a young man who hopefully will study torah and serve in the idf uh the reducing of the age uh basically the concept is until now those in the ultra orthodox community have been i’m going to use a very harsh word many have been trapped in a system those who are no longer studying torah day and night as their only pursuit but they’re not going to go to the army they don’t have the option of going to work because israel gives them an exemption from serving the army because they’re studying torah which means that they can’t go to work until an age further on into their 20s and that creates a scenario where they’re already married they have children and and they’re not able to support their families because they can’t go to work what the government did in approving this measure is saying at the age of 21 already if you received an exemption from serving in the army but you no longer want to stay in yeshiva you can go out and find a job you can get training and go to work that’s something i certainly work very hard on in this organization called abu dhabi redim to help young men get training and get jobs and support their families so they’ve no they’re no longer trapped in yeshiva so to speak but they have the option if they don’t want to study they don’t have to go to the army but they can go to work that’s a major major change for the charity society and also for broader israel so for for the haradi society this is a welcome change i can understand that said for the for the secular society which views kharadi involvement in the military as lacking uh you know 21 is still fairly old for conscription does this really address the issue of students staying in yeshiva just to avoid the draft or otherwise uh participating in national service one of the things that broader israel has come to realize and i know this from even back in 2013 as a member of yesha titans and being on the committee to draft the legislation about this issue is that you’re not going to have unmasked every single 18 year old harid going to the army it’s just not going to happen it’s not even worth that effort the literal civil war that will happen because at the age of 18 these are critical years when these young men are studying in yeshiva and the rabbinic seminaries so the idea is to try to find some kind of a balance those that will serve in the army let’s find units for them in the army that meet their needs let’s try to find a way to make it enticing for them to come let’s even set goals that must come to the army from these communities and from the ishi vote but otherwise let’s recognize that for ideological reasons they are not going to serve in the army and therefore why keep them in a situation where they’re just receiving money from the state and not actually working and paying tax revenue back to the state and i think this is a progression which has taken place in broader israeli society as the leaders realized we can’t just have this all-out battle about the army yes army or no army let’s be a little bit nuanced about this and introduce employment and the workforce into the picture and i think that’s a very important step that this government has taken and by the way you don’t hear screams and cries from the ultra orthodox leadership there’s actually quite a bit of quiet because i think they also recognize that there are benefits to this plan which could actually serve their community to not always be in this cycle of poverty all right rabbi dove mittman thank you again so much for joining us and congratulations again on your grandson thank you so much now back to covet 19 deadly coronavirus trends in israel seemingly continuing the infection rate rising back overnight to over 6.3 percent and at least 16 people succumbing to the virus on sunday alone but israeli officials are still confident that we can turn things around ale tv’s kind of rifkin with the report is nearly 6 500 new cases confirmed overnight over 670 patients in serious condition 180 of whom are on ventilation and the death toll in israel rising to 6830 since the start of the pandemic meantime amidst a dramatic spike in hospitalizations and a row with the government over funding public hospitals threatening to stop receiving new coronavirus patients on monday but despite the rising numbers in hospital overcrowding prime minister bennett and the coveted cabinet moving forwards with plans to keep the coming holiday season open up and not just the holidays but schools too the government deciding once and for all to reopen classrooms september 1st the idea being to employ a widespread testing campaign including parents and pupils to facilitate a return to in-person learning and this in defiance of experts warnings that holiday services and schools will contribute to surging infections in september the reason being that vaccinations and more specifically booster shots can save the day as long as the public starts taking vaccinations and other restrictions more seriously nearly 1.5 million israelis and counting already given the third dose which is currently available to all ages 40 and up younger ages to be eligible soon but the rate of participation is still far from enough in other news now my next guest is an all-around athlete like no other with experience in over a dozen different sports and in fact she already holds a silver medal from an international competition but this year at the coming paralympic games in tokyo japan she’ll be fighting for the gold on behalf of israel in singles kayaking i’m incredibly excited and proud to present paralympic athlete journalist filmmaker and inspirational speaker pascal berkovic pascal thank you so much for being with us it’s a pleasure to have you how are you feeling ahead of the flight are you more nervous or anxious than you are excited um i’m not i’m not ex i’m not anxious i’m very excited i’m very happy i think it’s an amazing privilege to be able to represent israel at the paralympics uh i am the last athlete to fly and uh and to japan for for this adventure and i’m i’m really thrilled i’m i’m happy um i i’m i’m expecting for for i’m expecting this moment for five years now training two times a day so so finally it’s happening just the final you know packing and the everything and i am ready all right now you just mentioned uh you know training twice a day and more on that in a minute but how do you mentally prepare to compete at such a high level like this um yeah it’s a very very good question you’re asking because actually the olympic games or the paralympics are not another competition it’s not like the words or the the opera championship that are also very important races and the competitions but olympic games has something special all you know everybody is looking at you uh the whole country is just uh expecting a medal expecting something for you from you um the media there everybody is there and it’s very special it’s very um i mean at the beginning it’s really frightening but um this is my fourth olympic game so i’m very uh used to it and i know how to handle the the pressure um i do it by being very very precise in my preparation i know exactly what i’m and what i put in my bag i know exactly how i’m going to uh what is my schedule there in in tokyo i already know exactly what i’m going to do uh during my competition my my competition plan is already ready um and so i’m trying to be um as precise as possible to uh to in order to lower the the pressure all right so let’s let’s talk more about the physicality now uh that we mentioned uh a moment ago you’ve placed well in the past in in many different sports in sports like rowing you took silver in the 2008 world rowing cup in germany uh but how do you view your chances in in tokyo does the level of how does the level of competition compare um actually the level is going up and up uh all the time it’s it’s it’s crazy it’s it’s always harder um the level uh internationally is getting higher all the time because everybody is training very hard and um the the trainings are getting more precise and um everywhere um so um it’s it’s tougher and tougher but actually i i can say my last trainings were very good and i i feel really well prepared i feel on the right on the right spot i feel um that i i’m really expecting for myself for to be on the final a and uh and um and then you know on the final it’s everybody’s very close it’s very hard to know how it’s going to end um the tokyo regatta is uh very challenging because it’s part of the sea uh it’s in the tokyo bay and um a lot of waves a lot of side winds which is very very tough for us so so i don’t know i don’t know i i don’t want to uh to speak too much i i i want to perform now as a journalist you’ve actually you’ve also written extensively about disability related issues uh you’ve also been in as you as you mentioned earlier four paralympic games and and other similar competitions where is there the biggest room for improvement at the paralympics wow and the biggest room for improvement i think um it’s it’s not necessary during the the paralympic games doing the events but more uh at home in each country because um it’s not it’s it’s really not equal the way uh societies are uh you know um looking at the people with a disability um we are physically challenged and for some societies it’s uh very hard to know how to help and how what to do so i think it i would like to see um an international movement uh stronger um to help uh all the countries to um to uh to deal equally with that and um actually i know the paralympics are really uh a good um uh a good way to talk about uh um physically challenged people and the and the how um it could be really a benediction you know to to to to be together and um help each other and uh understand uh um that we have a big role to play in our societies at home me in israel and everybody in in her or his own country i think we are role models as high high-end athletes and we can change this word for a better one and uh this thing this is uh what we a lot of of the athletes with this is what we are seeking for being together and moving forward and helping um not only paralympic athletes but all all people that have uh um are physically or or intellectually uh challenged uh and um because we are all together we are all the same at the end of the day and um we we are we have more in common than than you know our differences uh um so um when we meet at the paralympics we feel it very strong very strongly you know you have people from afghanistan from the states from many countries from africa asia we are and and and it’s it’s obvious that we have to help each other to to build the world that is more equal and more accepting all right pascal berkovic thank you so so much for taking the time and speaking with us today it’s been an absolute pleasure thank you very much now i’m going to take my plane for tokyo have good luck thank you very much thank you i’m there thank you very much now talk about reaching for the stars for our
